18: Investigations
"An inside job?" Evan furrowed his brows.
"Yeah," Owen nodded, clutching the jersey tighter. "Just think about it. The teams haven't arrived yet, and we're the only ones in here. Us, Mr. Thomas, security and event organizers. It has to be someone on the team, because there's no way someone got in."
"Are you sure though?" Dylan seemed sceptical. "This girl managed to sneak past all of us and put the jerseys in the change rooms when people were literally in there. Who's to say that she didn't sneak past security?"
Owen stared at the jersey in his hand. "This girl is good."
"We need to bring in the big guns if we wanna catch her." Evan said, only half joking. "We need all our teammates to keep guard. We're sure to catch her like that."
Oh boy. I'm fucking screwed.
"Let's do some investigating so maybe we can catch her later today." Ethan suggested, like a child eager to play pretend.
"What do you mean?" I furrowed my brows.
He shrugged. "Look for clues. Like maybe she dropped an earring or something."
"That's actually a good idea." Keenan stated.
"Dean, Bailey, Baylor and Evan, you guys take the change rooms. Keenan, Smith, Ryan and I will take the hallways. Vylad, Jaiden, Dylan and Zach you guys check the entrance and lobby. Owen and Wyatt, you guys check storage closets and bathrooms." Ethan instructed and we all split up again.
We began searching the change room we were in, Evan and Dean searching the higher up areas and Baylor and I crawling around on the ground. Baylor sifted through the pile of jerseys on the floor.
As I was crawling around on the floor I noticed that my wrist didn't make a clattering sound when it hit the tile floor. My eyes darted to my right wrist. My charm bracelet wasn't on.
When I was little my dad bought me a Pittsburg Steelers charm bracelet that I usually wore for 'good luck'. I remember putting it on earlier today because I knew I'd need the luck. Now it was gone.
"Need help with the jerseys?" I asked my brother, sitting on the floor next to him.
"Sure." He replied and I began digging through the jerseys, hoping and praying it wasn't in there.
"What's this?" Evan asked.
I looked up at him, my heart racing. Pinched between his thumb and index finger was a silver bracelet with black and yellow charms.
"Bails, isn't that your bracelet?" Dean asked.
I checked my wrist and looked back up at him.
"I guess it is."
"Must've fallen off when you were crawling on the floor." Baylor shrugged, returning his attention to the jerseys.
Evan tossed me the bracelet and returned to his investigator task.
Dean checked the time on his phone and furrowed his dark brows.
"We seriously need to hurry this up, because the teams are going to be here soon." He warned.
We all agreed that we'd combed the room and hadn't found anything of significance. Moving into the other room, the first thing Evan pointed out was all the mints on the ground.
"Maybe someone spilled their mints on the ground." I suggested.
Evan was on the ground holding one of the mints in his fingers, staring at it intensely. The scene was quite comedic.
"Wouldn't the janitors have cleaned it up though? The rest of the room is spotless." Evan countered, still starring at the mint.
"A distraction." Baylor stated matter-of-factly.
"What?" I furrowed my brows.
"A distraction." He repeated.
Was this man dense? I heard what he'd said, I just didn't understand what he meant.
"Huh?" Evan gave him a confused look.
"Someone used the mints as a distraction so they could sneak past Smith. I bet that girl running down the hall was a distraction too." He explained.
We all sat in silence for a moment, taking in this information.
"Come to think of it," Dean thought aloud. "The girl I chased was blonde, not a brunette."
"You think there's more than of them?" Evan asked, standing up and dropping the mint.
"Has to be." I muttered, staring at the wall.
"We should tell the others." Baylor advised and we all agreed.
###
For now the guys had put the investigation to rest. It was still in the back of everyone's minds, but right now, the game was the priority. Pinecrest was playing Nor'Wester. It was halfway through the third quarter and Nor'Wester was behind by six points. They just needed to get one touchdown to even things out.
"I'm going to the bathroom." I told Dean, pressing a kiss to his cheek and getting up from my seat.
"Alright babe." He nodded, sending me a wink that no one else caught.
There was no way that I could get the next team's jerseys in the change rooms without crawling through the ceilings again. But at least I knew my way around this time, making my job a thousand times easier. Before heading back up to the sky box with the others I double checked that my bracelet was on my wrist. Thank god it was.
As I pushed open the door to the box all the guys jumped up from their seats, cheering. I rushed to the railing so I could see what was happening. The score board changed, Prinecrest just scored another touch down.
"Damn." I grumbled. "I missed the play."
Dean shot be a sympathetic smile. "It wasn't as good of a play as the last one."
I kept my eyes trained on the field as the kickoff was about to start. The kicker ran straight at the ball, kicking it more to the right than he intended. I expected it not to go through the uprights, but it did. Barely.
We all jumped up again cheering.
Unfortunately for Nor'Wester we did a lot more cheering for the rest of the game. Good thing these guys had good sportsmanship, but a lose like that is sure to sting a little.
As we all headed down the hallways to meet with the guys after the game, Dean leaned into my ear. "We are gonna be so fucked tomorrow."
A/N: I'm on a writing kick today, so don't be surprised if I finish this book today. There's only two chapters left, so be ready for some action.
