Neatly dressed in a champagne-colored three-piece suit, his brown hair sleeked back and away from his face revealing the harsh lines of his face and that out-thrust jaw. Four to five balloons with the inscription 'get well soon' held together with the flowers.
Paige's mouth dropped open as she recalled she had told him she couldn't make it to the office because she was sick. Was that why he was here? Because he thought she was sick?" He must have bought those balloons off the street on impulse. It didn't seem his style.
"Are you going to let me in?" His mouth curved to the side with a gentle smile. His voice, low and thick with his accent.
"Ah... yes," Paige blushed and stepped away from the door. Forgetting Finn was inside her apartment.
It wasn't until Leo paused a little farther from the living room with a haunted expression on his face that Paige realized what she had done. She hurried over to Leo immediately, and he turned his head to her.
Disbelief on his face. Which was immediately masked. And with a light voice that betrayed no emotion, he said, "I hadn't realized you had company. How thoughtless of me to barge in without asking if you were free."
It was at that moment that Finn noticed Leo, and he stood up so he could easily be seen.
"Here, take this." Leo thrust the balloons and flowers into her hand and turned towards the door.
Paige was at a loss. She quickly dropped the items on a nearby cushion and chased after him, catching his arm before he reached the front door. He turned, but only part of his body towards her, and the look she saw in his eyes chilled her. Causing Paige to drop her hand. His eyes were saying without words; yes, go on, what can you tell me.
"Yyou you remember Finn right?" His face showed no recollection of remembrance. Which scared Paige. Making her palm to sweat. Paige tried again. "The friend of mine you met at the office parking lot.
"Friend of yours?" This time his head turned in Finn's direction, who, to Paige's mortification, was smirking at Leo with a challenging expression in his eyes. Paige wanted to go over there and wipe that smirk from his face.
"So he is your friend," Leo muttered in a peculiar voice, still looking at Finn, but now his expression had tightened to match that of Finn's and an unspoken word passed through the two men which, to Paige's bewilderment, she couldn't understand.
He looked down at her. At Paige's tense face. "Then why do you have him at your house all the time?" His face mirrored the confusion he must be feeling.
Those furrowed brows and darting eyes which compelled Paige's gaze.
"I beg to disagree," Paige muttered. "I can count how many times Finn has been to my apartment with my two hands." She raised her hands showcasing her fingers, "And they will still be some fingers left."
"You don't have to sell me out to the public like that, Paige," Finn rasped out, sounding slightly annoyed.
"Sell you out to the public? I haven't said anything that isn't true."
Leo smiled then and gently grabbed her wrist, taking her outside. Paige smiled back, but just as they were about to leave, she saw Finn frowning hard.
Once outside, Leo let go of Paige's hand. His eyes never leaving her face. His smile was warm and gentle, which released the tension in Paige.
"How do you feel?" He murmured and felt her forehead with the back of his hand. "Should i call you a doctor?"
Paige had been about to ask him why he would call a doctor, when she remembered the balloon with the get-well-soon inscription in the living room. Her boss was here because he thought she was sick. Paige wasn't sick. She had only called in sick because she wanted to see a doctor concerning her pregnancy and then take the rest of the day off and rest.
She didn't know that decision will bring Leo to her doorstep or that he would care for her so, and worry about her. It felt so surreal.
"Not bad," Paige muttered, smiling sheepishly. Chuckling, Leo placed a gentle kiss on her lips. Just then, the thoughts of her pregnancy flashed through her mind and her heart sank low.
They were standing outside her front door, facing the streets. The air was balmy, with Leo looking at her with that soft smile he had been carrying ever since they came outside. Paige felt guilty.
How dare she enjoy this moment when she hasn't told him she was pregnant, when she doesn't have the intention of doing so anytime soon.
"Here, I got you some chocolate cookies. Do you want one?" Leo asked. Fishing it out of his pocket before she even agreed and handed it to her.
"Whenever I'm sick I do like to take something sweet. I don't know about you. I brought it in case you like the same."
Paige collected it and murmured her thanks, but now her mood had gone sour. Concentrating on the flowers in the fancy house adjacent to theirs, Paige tried not to look at Leo.
Leo must have noticed that because he leaned forward, touching her arm. "Paige, are you not eating that, or don't you like it? I bought it for you, you know."
"Oh I will," Paige looked down. When she looked up she muttered, "Can I ask you a question?" Immediately she finished saying that, she said, "Oh never mind, I think it's silly." Paige's brows furrowed down.
"Paige," he waited till she met his eyes. "Ask. Ask me anything?"
"When you said you will marry me? If I got pregnant. Had you meant it?" Paige wanted to hear it one more time, to be sure she wasn't making a horrible mistake.
Slowly his eyes went down her stomach at once, as though he expected to see a baby bump. Paige held her breath.
"Are you pregnant?"
Paige gave a nervous laugh. "You must be joking right?" Thinking she had thrown him off with that answer, but when she looked up. He was still staring at her, seemingly waiting for an answer.
"Don't be silly how can I be pregnant?" Paige said, hoping he didn't notice the slight catch in her voice.
Paige didn't know if he believed her, but Leo didn't pursue the question again.
Instead, he threw the question. "Why do you ask?" His dark eyes searched her face.
At that point, Paige felt that if she slipped up just the tiniest bit, he would read her like the first four letters of the English Alphabet.
What was he looking for?
"Humor me, Leonardo I'm just curious," she murmured at last.
His brows came down in full force. "Well, there is nothing to be curious about Paige Compton, because I meant every single word I spoke that day."
"Which is?"
He looked confused. She was asking him to clarify. "That if a baby ever came out from our union, I will marry you."
The moment he said that, Paige's face fell, and her eyes misted. What had she been thinking?
"Paige, are you crying?" He seemed so at a loss.
She shook her head, fighting the urge to wipe the tears she knew must be collecting at the corner of her eyes.
Just then, his phone rang, but he ignored it.
His dark gaze was imploring her. "Talk to me, Paige. What's wrong?"
However, his mobile phone kept ringing insistently and so loudly, but he ignored it completely. "Paige..."
"You should take that. It might be the investor we reached out to."
Only then did he glance down at his pocket where the phone was ringing. And Paige could see the indecision in his face. Paige gave him the warmest smile she could muster, which was a far contrast to what she was feeling.
"Go on now," she urged him. "I got something in my eyes earlier that was why my eyes were leaking. Come on, it's nothing serious." She cajoled him, and after a few other words like that, he finally left.
Answering his call, Leo stepped into his car, and his driver zoomed off.
Paige stormed into the apartment, only to be greeted by Finn's words.
"He is only using you. You know."
"Shut up Finn. I don't want to hear it!" Paige yelled.
Finn looked stunned. "I can't believe you are still in love with him. And you let him kiss you."
It was at this point that Paige paused, disbelief on her face. "You were spying on us?"
"I had to," he replied. No remorse on his face. "You guys weren't exactly discrete."
"Kudos to you then," Paige said and tried to get past him. He caught her hand. "Why can't it be me?" His expression was one of despair.
Paige looked him deep in the eyes with the unshed tear that burned the back of her eyes, and her dry throat and muttered, "Because you are not Leonardo."
