the invitation

My head kept tilting backwards while my mum went through every existing knot on my head with her hair brush. I stared at myself in the red dress with these ugly yellow flowers through the mirrow, letting my mum brush my hair.

„You look beautiful in my old prom dress, darling", she said while braiding my dark brown curls. I nodded although I hated it and wasn't able to tell her that. I couldn't stand looking in her happily sparkling chocolate eyes and lie. „Your brother will be happy to see you again after these two years" „Will he?", I interupted her and looked at her face for the first time that day. „The last two years he didn't seem to care. Also you got the invitation, not me. Does he even know I'm coming this afternoon?" I could see her bright smile falling and immediatly regreted shouting at her. The last two weeks she jumped through our tiny flat, being exited to see the whole family being finally together after two years. It destroyed her when my brother moved out from one day to the other, breaking up every contact between us. The invitation made her be happy again so I did not want to change that with how I felt. „Do you think his fiancee will like us?", I gave my best saving the situation. „I hope so. Getting invited to your brothers wedding after that long time without speaking is surprising. But I guess she was the one wanting to meet us. You know your brother. He would never change his opinions." „No, he wouldn't", I relaxed after getting my mums smile back on her lips and we both got lost in our own thoughts.

I stared at my brothers familiar smile on the picture being made of us as a family before I destroyed it – or my brother did. Over these years I realized it was not my fault. It was his – and of that book. That book, my brother trusted more than facts or blood. That book, many people use as a prove that homosexuality is a sin and unnatural. A book naming a guy walking over water, a pregnant virgin and a girl speaking with snakes, meant more to him than his own sister.

No, I wasn't the one destroying our family. I just love a girl and not a guy.
