Chapter 32

Leo's POV
We met at the park.

The Central Park to be exact.

I was testing a toy helicopter that I bought at Walmart, the ones that come with controllers. It worked pretty well for a toy, but then I was going to add modifications and make it amazing, Leo Valdez amazing.

Yeah, I could see in the future. Instead of amazing or awesome, it would be replaced with Leo Valdez.

"Hey dude, where'd you get that shirt? It's so Leo Valdez."

"Girl, those shoes look so Leo Valdez on you!"

Anyways, ADHD here, I sat down on a bench under a tree.

The weather was pretty hot for New York, but nothing compared to a hot and steamy Texas summer.

There were families around, a lady walking her baby in a stroller, a kid and a dad playing ball, a family having a picnic, and a couple playing catch with a dog.

I experimented with the helicopter, seeing how far up I could take it, making it fly out of the atmosphere.

Yep, the aliens loved it up there.

Moving on...

The helicopter didn't go as high as I wanted.

I took out my tools and fiddled with it.

I strengthened the blades, gave it a more powerful energy source, and all of that good stuff.

Then I tested it out again.

It flew up, higher than the trees.

It was just a dot in the sky.

Then came the good part when it started falling.

Flames danced around the sides, probably an engine malfunction.

It crashed east, and I ran after it.

My inventions worked sometimes, and sometimes they didn't.

Like life I suppose, except with relationships.

When I arrived, a girl had her back to me, arms crossed, disapprovingly looking at the helicopter which crashed into a flower bed, flames igniting the flowers.

Well, at least the smoke would smell flowery. Maybe I could just kick some dirt over it?

Unless... The flower garden was owned by that girl? Or had she planted it? Crap.

And the girl was pretty too, at least what I could see of her back.

She had a long braid flowing down her back, caramel colored hair. She was about the same height as me. She had on a white blouse on which I wondered how she hadn't gotten dirt on, and blue jean capris.

Suddenly she turned around, and I was breathless.

She was gorgeous in a natural way.

She had warm brown almond shaped eyes, light pink pouty full lips, and a cute button nose with a spray of freckles.

"Are you the one who did this to my flowers?" she questioned angrily, her eyebrows scrunching together in a cute way.

"Depends. What would happen to the person that did it?"

"I would wring their neck." she replied, making a strangling gesture with her fingers. "I have been working on this all day!"

"Um, then I didn't do it."

She walked straight up to me and looked me in the eye.

"You better fix this right now or the police will find a dead body next to this pile of ashes."

I gulped. Sweat beaded on my forehead.

"Yes ma'am."

I hurriedly grabbed my helicopter and slid it into my pocket.

I stomped out the flames, and spread out the ashes.

"Now what?" I thought out loud looking around.

"Go to the flower store."
the girl said icily, looking down on me.

Then she threw a list at me with flowers that I'd never heard of.

"Go." She said then she sat down on the bench and crossed her legs.

It was clear to me that she wasn't budging an inch.

I sighed in defeat.

"Fine sunshine."

I have no idea where it came from I guess the name just came from her lack of it.

She cracked an eye open, and looked at me.

"Excuse me?"

"Hmm?" I said. I was already walking away.

"What did you call me?" she demanded to know.

"Sunshine." I smirked at her.

Her face got red.

"Just go get the flowers!" she yelled.

Off I went, laughing, to the flower store.

I got back an hour and a half later.

It was about 4 o'clock.

She was still sitting on the bench, this time looking really bored.

"Bored sunshine?"

She jumped, then glared.

"Stop calling me that!"

"Okay, give me your name then and I'll stop."

She rolled her eyes.

"Calypso." she sighed.

"Like those lemonades?"

"Sadly yes. Tell me your name. I told you mine."

"Valdez. Leo Valdez."

"Hm."

"That's all you have to say is hm?"

"Yep. Your name is a very hm-ing name."

"Whatever. So Sunshine, where do I put these flowers?"

"In the ground, duh." She said, ignoring the pet name.

She grabbed the flowers from my hands, and carefully set them on the ground. Then she started instructing me.

"Start digging holes about as big as these plants."

I protested. I didn't know how to garden!

"But-"

"Do it. You burnt my previous flowers, so you have to pay."

I sighed in defeat, then started planting.

She led me through all the steps, even the part about fertilizing, which I did not enjoy because she threw some at my face. I threw some at her pure white shirt, and she turned beet red and started throwing manure all over me. In the end I was covered and smelled like crap. Literally.

"You look like crap." She told me, laughing.

"Shut up." I glowered.

When I finally planted the rest of the flowers, I collapsed, exhausted on the bench beside her. She didn't look even a bit dirty or sweaty except for the one manure spot that I looked at triumphantly.

The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glaze over the park, like butter on popcorn.

It illuminated the flowers, making them look like pure gold.

Even though it was pretty hard work, I would say that I might try becoming a gardener, especially if she was my boss.

"Good job." Calypso said grudgingly.

"Thanks."

We sat in silence.

Most of the other people that were here earlier had gone home.

Finally, when the sun had spread its last golden rays around, Calypso decided to stand up.

She grabbed the brown messenger bag she had brought along with her.

"Well I wouldn't say nice to meet you but I guess if I see you I see you."

I nodded, exhausted.

I watched her walk off, seeing her sandal footed figure get smaller and smaller until  the darkness swallowed her up.

I jumped up suddenly.

I should've asked for her number!

Ugh, idiot! She was the most beautiful girl that I'd ever met, better than icy Khione, or even smoking hot Thalia.

Next time maybe?

I shook my head, her image burned into my conscious now, and headed home.

AN
