Chapter 2. Dinner with the Mylo's

"Hi! Oh my Gosh Kate, how long has it been?" I hear to what I presume is Tom's wife. "Hi!! Deborah, it's been a while of course ever since your wedding. We've been great how are you!" My mom says in reply.

Their voices echo across the room since I've just been sitting in the living room waiting for them to move over to me rather than me moving to them and having to make a conversation. Some would call me lazy but, I think it's smart.

  "Oh, and how are you, young man? We haven't met each other before, you're Tom's son I'm guessing." I hear my dad say. "Frank this is my son Ben," Tom says. 

I was expecting to hear a child's voice but what I heard surprised me.

"Hi sir, Nice to meet you finally" says a deeper yet not too deep voice almost soothing. He sounded so enthusiastic and happy to meet them... Well what would I know about that.

Luckily Gemma was in the living room with me so I wasn't alone.

"Come in, come in we've got some delicious food!" I hear my mom say followed by some footsteps. They removed their shoes cause I mean, who wears their shoes in a house? It's so dirty! Plus I don't have to mop.

 The family entered and the boy who I thought was at least in middle school was surprisingly tall. I mean not too tall like 6'9 tall but like at least 6'0 or 6'1. Me getting the taller genes in the family, I'm 5'5. I never played sports but I'm good at running at least.

"Gemma hi! How do you remember us?" Deborah says to her. "Of course! how are you Tita?" she says in reply.

*side note Deborah's Filipino and Tom is American and Ben is Half and Half so yeah*

As they continue their conversation Tom waves at me and I wave back while awkwardly shifting my body back and forth with my feet. Then the worst thing you could imagine (or just me) happens.

Ben starts walking up to me.

"Hi, I'm Ben and You are...?" He says to me. "Me? oh I uhm- Jill. I mean- I'm Jill. Sorry, I'm not too good at introducing myself." at this point I'm heating up from embarrassment.

"No, it's fine, nice meeting you. Oh uhm where can I put this?" He was referring to the salad he had in his hands. "Oh, you can set it on the table over there," I say pointing to the table in our dining room.

"Alrighty! Let's Eat!" I hear my mom say which I was waiting for, for a while now my stomach has been fighting for food since I haven't eaten since lunch.

Once I put all my food on my plate I immediately went to eat in the living room away from the adults who were at the table. 

Gemma joined me while i turned on the TV and put on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix which is my favorite show along with her. Luckily Ben chose to sit with the adults which I think is absolutely boring.

"Funny that you thought he was a kid and I thought he was my age but he seems your age. To me he's young but it's cause I'm older and I'm in college whereas you're still in High school" Gemma says out of nowhere. "I know it's weird," I say in reply.

Everything was fine until I heard Ben say this.

"May I be excused? I'm gonna go throw away my food and I try to make a conversation with them" when I heard that my eyes became wide and I choked on my food.

My immediate thoughts were 'WHAT. Whyyyyy. pathetic. smart move Jill."

I was coughing so hard that it caught Ben's attention. NO. Please don't come over here, please don't come over here. 

Guess what he did.

He came over.

"Hey here have some water. Are you ok?" He asks while I drink the water he gave me.

"Yeah *cough* I'm fine, thanks" I'm so embarrassed. "I'm going to the bathroom real quick. uh- Sorry" I say while going down the hallway. 

The bathroom was the only place I could find peace. It's away from everything else and it's just you. You could do practically anything. 

I walked in and shut the door. I took deep breaths trying to consult myself. "Gosh Darn it, Jill, you're so stupid!" I whispered to myself. 

After I was more relaxed I decided to go back outside and watch some more. I was thinking it be safe to go out now since he probably went back to sit with the adults.

"Are you ok?" I hear a deep voice beside me. "Ah!" I shrieked. It was just Ben. I thought he was gone. This is going to be a  long night.

" Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. I was just checking up on you to see if you were alright." He says trying to be reassuring. 

"Oh sorry, I was just surprised to see you still here" I regret saying that. He had a confused look on his face. "I meant- i- uh- I just thought you were going to sit with our parents again," I said trying to recover what I said earlier.

"Hey, hey, you don't need to apologize. It's fine I understand" He said in a soothing voice. Nobody has said that to me before. It either 'that's what I thought' or ' just don't do it again'.

"What's wrong?" He asks. 

I realized I had a surprised look on my face and I immediately changed it to a more sheepish look. "Sorry, it's just that no one has ever told me to stop apologizing before."   

"Really why so?" he says with a confused but surprised look on his face. We we're still in the hallway and my room was just a few steps away so I try to make an escape plan to avoid this conversation from going any further.

"Hello? Earth to Jill.." He waves his hand in my face. Wait, he remembers my name too?! Most people don't remember my name and will be to ashamed to ask again so they say every other word that refers to someone than accidentally saying the wrong name which I don't blame them for.

"Oh uh sorry, hey look I gotta go.. I've gotta do some... homework uh yeah- that I haven't finished yet so uh gotta get working on it," I say awkwardly while trying to walk toward my room 

Just as I was about to enter I feel a strong hand grab my wrist.

"Wait! Can we just talk or just get to know each other at least?"

A/N: I tried to make the cliffhanger more interesting but that's all I could do. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't think it was impressive. Anyways today's song is called "Can I Call You Tonight" by Dayglow. When I finish this I'll probably make a playlist for this on Spotify. Ok, that's all for now.
