Mr. Barker, I Made This For You!
I was ten years old when I painted my picture of baby Johanna for the nursery. I was excited for the Barkers! They were the nicest people I ever met. I ran to my father in the living area, you know my father as Judge Turpin.
"Daddy, I made this for Mr. and Mrs. Barker, you think they'll like it?"
"It's their new baby, how thoughtful of you."
He snatched it from me, crumpled it up, and threw it away.
"Who are you to associate with them, you're a child! You need to be playing with children your own age!"
"They're nice people and they have a sweet baby girl, isn't it what matters?"
Daddy just ignored me and walked away. I got the painting out of the waste basket. Still good and dry but a bit crumpled. I walked out, I saw Mr. Benjamin Barker outside on his way home from the shop.
"Mr. Barker!"
He smiled at me as I ran to him.
"Savannah, what brings you out this evening, it's cold?"
"I made this for you, it's a painting of Johanna."
I handed it to him.
"That is so thoughtful of you darling, thank you, Mrs. Barker and the baby will love it."
"I was thinking of it to be framed in the nursery."
"I will do that just for you."
He ruffled my hair a little.
"You're a wonderful painter Savannah, you could make very good money off of your work."
"I could? But I'm still in school and I'm ten."
He chuckled.
"I meant...when you're grown up like me."
We continued to walk through town.
