Chapter 24
"Damn, when you said you had something to show me, I didn't know it was this cool!" Lena exclaimed.
"This wasn't even what we were going to show you!" Pepper said excitedly.
"This is amazing! How do we rewind?" Vanessa cried.
Pepper picked up the tablet, and pressed one of the buttons, which seemed to make it skip to the next scene. The button next to it backed up the scene though, and they returned to the video of the multiple spaceships. They watched it a dozen times, trying to see if there were any other clues that they could glean from it.
"So where is the second ship?" Vanessa wondered.
"Maybe it got away," Lena hoped.
"It couldn't have gone to Earth, right?" Pepper wondered.
"Well, not unless all the cute little foxes on our planet are aliens in disguise," Lena said with a chuckle.
The three shared a look, each trying to think if that possibility could be realistic.
"No way," Vanessa finally stated. "The whole fox hunt thing in England would have never happened if the foxes could fight back with the weapons we found."
"Then maybe they went to another planet," Pepper suggested.
"Maybe. But if it were damaged, it could have gone down on Uranus, and we'd never know." Lena pointed out.
"Shit. That actually makes sense based on what we've seen," Vanessa agreed.
"I was really hoping for a working spaceship too," Lena moped.
"Well then, you're in luck!" Pepper smirked. "Because that is what we were actually going to tell you, the big ship has power, at least to the bridge anyway. We were hoping you could help us figure out what some of the stuff up there does."
"Holy shit! Seriously?"
"Yeah, but don't tell anyone!" Vanessa admonished.
"Okay, I'm in. But I get to go to the bridge too, right?"
"Absolutely! We had wanted you there when we accidentally turned on the lights yesterday," Pepper smiled.
"Well, I have to drive a sled, but I'm just a ferry for guns at this point, so I can just park it and let them load it up and then I can take it back when we're done," Lena shrugged happily.
"Oh, and we need to grab a bunch more of these laser pointers. I bet each one is different, and it will give whoever is on the bridge something to do. I'm betting Xavier is going crazy up there not being able to do much else," Vanessa suggested.
"Well, then let's go. We need to show this toy off!" Lena exclaimed.
When they met on the bridge with the rest of the team, there was a lot of wonder as the holograph was shown. Even Anton praised Pepper with a wry look. Evidently, he hadn't realized how much information might be contained in their seemingly simple find over in the alien bunks. The most excitement came at the prospect of a second large ship, though there was worry as well, in case there was a group of living aliens that might not want them around the remains of their ancestors.
Pepper showed everyone what they had discovered with the controls, and soon everyone had their own tablet and several of the laser pointers to examine. Each of the pointers had different images, they seemed to be handed down within each family, but had similarities as well. There were always moments where it looked as though the ancestors were explaining something to whoever was watching, there was usually a song or dance, and all of them ended shortly after a view of the ships awaiting them.
"Guys, I think we might be able to figure out where they came from," Xavier said softly, while having paused the holograph he was watching of the spaceships.
"How?" Anton asked him.
"Well, the sun is yellow, like ours, and in my video, I've seen at least two different moons in the backgrounds. I bet of we put all of this information together we could really narrow down the possible stars, and then to the planets around them." Xavier explained.
"Well, I guess I know what pilot duty will be for a while!" Lena chuckled. "That works for me!"
"That makes it more interesting for me as well," Xavier agreed. "Bring me back a lot of those pointers, I'll start taking notes!"
"We will!" Pepper assured him.
And so, they did. The team parked the three shuttles in the original room off the tunnel, and everyone loaded Pepper's sled up with every tablet and pointer they could find. No longer were they considered extraneous, but they could be a key to unlocking the language and culture of the aliens. Doing some quick experiments, they determined that the pointers played the same images regardless of the tablet they were placed in, so it confirmed their theory of them being like a flash drive of sorts. Once Pepper's sled was loaded up, she quickly took Vanessa and Lena up to the bridge, while Miles, Anton, and Brody went back for more of the rifles.
When the three ladies made it to the bridge, it was dark again, evidently the standby settings didn't take long to activate. They realized it made sense, on a normal operating ship, the bridge would be a hub of activity, with things happening almost constantly. A break of even an hour would indicate that it should shut down until needed again. Vanessa quickly set up a comm channel among the three of them, and they got to work.
"Alright, let me turn things on!" Vanessa said excitedly, moving towards the button on the panel they had used the previous visit.
"Wait!" Pepper called out. "Try pressing a different button this time, see if it will bring it out of standby."
Vanessa paused, and then moved over to a different panel, then paused once more. "Actually, let's let Lena do it. You need to have some fun up here.
Lena whooped with joy, and then pushed off to float to a different panel, and picked a random button, then jabbed at it. Within moments, the same soft light started to fill the bridge, as the emergency lights and panels all came to life. Just like before, they all just stared at the scene as everything was illuminated.
"Damn, you two sure know how to make a trip interesting!" Lena murmured in amazement, as she slowly spun around to take everything in.
"We had the same reaction when we saw it too," Pepper giggled, happy to see Lena so mesmerized.
"So, our theory is that where the hole is, is where the pilots and commanders would normally be, so the ship isn't flyable. But the panels around the edge seem to work, we just don't know what they do." Vanessa explained.
"Which is where you come in, because you're obviously our secret weapon to decipher everything."
"I doubt that!" scoffed Lena." But I'll do my best. What you said about the pilot and commander makes sense. They could have had a communications station there too, because you need that close to whoever is in charge."
"So, if that is the front of the ship, then what control panels would the pilot want right in front?" Pepper asked, pointing to the large, flat panel that was situated in that direction.
"Navigation for sure. Or maybe radar. One of the two. Those need to be in front so they can be seen whenever they need to be," Lena answered quickly.
The three of them crouched near the panel, checking out the knobs and dials near it. There was only a single button, so with a shrug, Vanessa pushed it. Instantly a hologram appeared over the flat screen that was in the center of the panel.
"So, the panels didn't all display images themselves, some project the holograms," Pepper murmured. "We should have seen that one coming."
Examining the display, they could see a large, light blue globe representing the planet on one side, and a large black three-dimensional triangle that seemed to be the ship they were on. Scattered in front of the triangle, were several smaller ones, and then a blue line next to it, which appeared to correspond to their ship. Beyond the group of triangles was another shape, this one a blue sphere, roughly where the ruins of the larger ship were. Even further out were images of the various rings and moons that were in range.
"So, is this the radar maybe?" Vanessa asked Lena.
"It does appear to be, though I wonder if it can do more?" Lena confirmed. She took one of the dials, and turned it left and right, only to see it zoom in and out of the image. "Cool!"
Pepper frowned at the image, feeling a bit of worry in the pit of her belly. "Hey, so this is cool and all. But is it just me, or is it weird that our ship is the same color as the ruined ship?"
