3 - Baby Follow My Lead
The lift dinged open happily on the 11th floor and I didn't waste any time bolting out of there. It was such a tiny space and was lined with mirrors which made it more accessible for him to watch me.
Jimin, to my great dismay, had followed me all the way down the hall to Mr. Park's office.
I knocked on the door once, not waiting for an answer, I rushed in and walked around the mahogany desk to stand in front of my Appa.
"Haneul my dear, you're here! Have a seat. Let me just check if Maya has sent your favourite raspberry cooldrink up."
"Anyeonhaseyo Appa." I bowed and then moved forward to hug the man as he stretched his arms open for a hug.
"Appa?" Jimin sounded perplexed by my greeting, standing rooted to the spot with curiosity.
I whipped my head around to see that Jimin had followed me like a puppy and was currently standing, looking like a snack, in the doorframe.
'Argh... Why is he so damn attractive?'
He stood there leaning with a hand resting nonchalantly against one of the panels of the doorframe, looking attractive- but annoying.
He just wasn't budging! Just standing there, staring curiously, at the two of us.
I just couldn't help narrow my eyes at him, stumped by this man's boldness.
'And, why was he so annoying?'
Images of mild violence had suddenly crossed my mind.
And I suddenly had the urge to pull him by his stupid black tie and kiss him- no I meant smack his silly cheeks, telling him that if he ever tried to follow me around anywhere, ever again, I wouldn't hesitate to give him a piece of my mind. And I hit him with my purse.
My mood lifted instantly as a trolley of goodies appeared behind Jimin.
He stepped out of the way in surprise; naïve little me watched him with joy, thinking maybe he'd get the picture and scoot along to his own office, leaving me alone, in peace, with my Appa and the food trolley.
However, I felt like a glass had shattered when Jimin walked into the office - rather than the opposite direction he was meant to actually be heading towards; standing close to the painting that I had made for my Appa last year, which now hung close to the entrance of his office.
'Was Jimin bad at directions? Did he need a map to his own office?'
The man looks at the painting of a forest just outside of Seoul with interest and looks at me, smiling knowingly.
The staff member who had brought in the trolley had bowed himself out, as I squealed with happiness on the inside, now distracted by the food that I spied on the trolley, not wanting to see too greedy.
However, to my dismay, my Appa had called the pest inside and had asked him to sit down next to me as I was helping myself to the assortment of treats on the trolley.
I sampled a small cupcake and almost cried tears of joy over how perfect it was.
Jimin looked over at me again, trying to flirt, or do whatever he thought looked cool.
'Pssht... Such a weirdo.' I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes and looked away, choosing food over looking at his idiotic grin as he tried to get my attention.
I begin having my seaweed soup and sipping my cooldrink, not bothered by the discussion the two men were now having. Sadly though, as hard as I had tried, bits of their conversation reached my ears and eventually, I had decided to join in.
When my Appa noticed me looking up at them, displaying some interest in their conversation, he smiled and officially introduced me to the man that was sitting next to me.
Jimin was delighted now that he was receiving my attention.
'What an Idiot...' I rolled my eyes at him, and then continued to look at my Appa who was now looking at me, smiling proudly.
'Would my dad do the same if he was around?'
"Ne, Jimin." Mr. Park agreed, as I began following their conversation.
"This is the daughter I told you about. Meet Park Haneul, Haneul, this is Park Jimin, my older brother's son, and your future husband."
At the word husband I choked and accidentally spat some of my cool drink out onto poor, unsuspecting, Jimin who happened to be in the line of fire.
'Serves him right, perfect little Jimin.' I narrowed my eyes at him, but fumbled around for a tissue.
'Argh... That's right my bag had fallen into a puddle thanks to clumsy here.'
I looked at Jimin, narrowing my eyes at him again for safe measure, but that's when I noticed how bad the splatter was. The cool drink had splattered all over his left cheek and the side of his neck, nearly touching his pristine shirt collar.
'JUST MY LUCK!' I huffed to myself angrily, grabbing a serviette off the trolley and vigorously began dabbing at his cheek and collar.
Thankfully there wasn't much of a stain. Even if there was, I knew a few neat tricks to remove the stain in no time, using the supplies I knew my Appa had stashed in the office supply cupboard behind him.
"Joesonghamnida. (I am sorry) Jimin-ssi." I say, cringing that I decided to address him so formally in front of my Appa.
Still mildly in shock, possibly from the wedding announcement, Jimin blinked twice, then realized that I was dabbing at his neck and face.
My fingertips accidentally brushed against his neck and he immediately turned a shade of pink; then looks away mumbling.
I hastily removed my hand from his neck and made my way to the sink in the connecting room at a far corner of the office, to wash my hands.
While inside, my eyes widened with realisation that I was drinking something sweet; so I rushed off into the lavatory cubicle of the connecting room that was set in a far off corner in Appa's office, taking some of the wet wipes from a dispenser my Appa kept in there; hastily returning to offer them Jimin as an apology.
"Ahh gwaenchanh-ayo (It's okay) Haneul-ssi. Don't worry about it. On the bright side, at least we're even now." He chuckled.
And with that he looked up at me and gave me, what I realised is his signature smile. His eyes twinkled and he winked at me discreetly as he eventually took a few wet wipes, then dabbed at his cheek and neck with them.
"Well, now that we're all friends again, I'll move along with the formalities. Haneul, please do sit down, I think it is best you both pay attention to what I have to say. Or rather, what your Halmoni had to say in her will."
It was at that point that I realised that I was still standing in front of Jimin. I hastily turned around to face my Appa's desk and couldn't help but ask the first round of questions that popped into my mind once I was daintily ensconced in the edge of the chair.
"Ne, Appa. What did Halmoni have to say? And why didn't I hear about any of this before? I know my parents left me a small set of bank books to cash out when I was 18. But that was it right? Where is all of this coming from?"
I asked as I shifted awkwardly in my seat and gestured at the paper work in front of Appa, lying on his desk, as I looked at him patiently, awaiting his response.
"This is slightly different Haneul, because for this particular inheritance, you need to be of a particular age and capable of handling the responsibilities this Inheritance brings. You've now graduated with your honours in commerce. Am I correct?"
'What?! I'm not ready for this! I'm only 21 after all!' I think to myself, my mind reeling uncontrollably.
"Ne Appa." I reply, still not following.
"Today is October 11th, and you, with your identity number xxxxxxxxxx have graduated from the University of Seoul on 16 May 2020." He says formally.
"Ne, that is my correct date of birth, identity number and graduation date." I confirmed, sitting up straighter in my seat.
"I now invite you to listen to your Halmoni's will, tomorrow, as scheduled by her, to be held the day after your twenty-first birthday."
"Oookay..." I skeptically say to my Appa.
"What Inheritance? And why did you call Jimin my future hu-, my future..., future.... what was it again?"
I just couldn't bring myself to say the word "husband" out loud.
'Yelp! I'm going to marry him?!'
"Jimin is your future husband, Haneul. Well..." Appa paused, looking at Jimin as if for support in this madness.
Jimin blushed like a bride to be, but he nodded along with what his uncle was saying, who continued with his announcement.
"Jimin is going to be one of your future husbands... as you will see for yourself, tomorrow. "
Huh?!
