Chapter 2: Real or Fake

I climbed into bed that night and waited until my eyes shut their blinds. Then, I began to dream.

After seeing the Inequality Monster up close, I realized that it had an orange horn, a pale blue body, red-orange fur, and navy blue claws. It, however, only had one red eye that took up a third of his face's surface along with two white teeth, one hanging out of each side of its peanut-looking mouth.

"Goodness, I can't believe how real you are!" I exclaimed.

"Told ya we'd meet again, didn't I?" he smirked.

I swallowed my phlegm.

Know-it-all: Spit it out. It's not healthy to swallow it.

Me: Nah, I do it all the time.

I knew that it was because of this monster that there were bullies at school and around the world; therefore, I had to defeat it.

As I ran toward it, I saw a portal to my right.

There is no time to go in right now.

The monster crawled rapidly with its four claws reaching for me in every stride. Even with that sharp pain in my broken leg, I utilized my arm strength that I had been building up since the incident in order to outrun the monster.

Once I couldn't keep up my initial speed, I used my left crutch as my supporting "leg" and swung my right crutch in the monster's eye, right in the pupil.

A few apartments' lights turned on one by one, then ten by ten, as he screamed with the shaking of the universe at two in the morning.

At this point, I couldn't tell if this happened in real life or in my dream. I couldn't believe how real it was.

Red liquid burst out of his eye, but he covered the eye itself.

Do humans have this in their eyes?

"That's my potion I made to remove the goodness out of people that run through my veins and into my claws. I then get to control people's brains when I hold them with my claws, turning them evil like me!" he explained but covered his mouth.

I chuckled. "Are you revealing yourself to me right now?"

"Please tell me you were half asleep and didn't listen to any of that."

"Oh, I didn't hear a word. Don't worry!"

This was too good to be true. If I knew his intentions and tactics, I could defeat him easily!

His swollen eye turned pink and looked around, scared for his life.

"You can't beat a six-year-old with a broken leg? Thinking about the whole world seems impossible for you then, huh?"

Know-it-all: No-

"Those w-words have n-no effect on me, so good luck wasting your voice like that." I could tell he attempted to sound vicious and confident, but his shaking voice and teary eyes weakened that impact.

That must be his weakness!

He took out a towel to wipe the residue from his eye, which had turned blood-red, and placed his claw on the spilt spot.

The red liquid had somehow absorbed into his claw!

He is not a human being.

I kept watching until he — or the liquid — burnt a hole in the grass the size of my hand! What kind of liquid is that? All of this from an eyeball? What a pair of crutches!

"You think you can beat and destroy me with just a swing of your stick-"

"For your information, it's called 'crutches', thank you."

"Whatever. Stick. Crutches. Same thing. My point here is that you've fallen into my trap."

What kind of trap is he referring to? He told me about the potion liquid thing giving him the power to his claws to do something...bad, but he doesn't have it now that I knocked it out of his system!

"Luckily, I have backup power," he said as he pulled out a plastic bag full of red liquid.

Such "valuable" liquid is in a plastic bag?

From my fanny pack, I grabbed my recently sharpened pencil - who knew when it would come in handy - and dashed toward his bag.

Despite poking a hole through it, he grabbed me with his claw and I could not see my victory in its entirety!

"You don't get to ruin me like this!"

"Well, I just did. Do you have any more of that "powerful" liquid?" I asked, air-quoting.

"Luckily, I just took some this morning as my breakfast-"

"You don't eat other foods like scrambled eggs, toas-"

"Why do you talk so much?!" He shook his head. "You know what? I don't have time for this. I have other kids to deal with."

He squeezed me harder; when more liquid ran down the hole I punctured in his eye from earlier, I grabbed a needle out of my fanny pack from my tomato pincushion for sewing and lifted my arm.

He couldn't take it.

"No, I have more power in these coats of armor! Don't puncture yet another hole!"

He then dropped me onto my stomach from ten feet in the air!

I suppose he knew I couldn't walk.

"I can't believe you're actually falling for this."

"You can't manipulate me to become a bully, too."

"Think about what you said to me before: You can't beat a six-year-old with a broken leg? Thinking about the whole world seems impossible for you then, huh?"

I raised my eyebrow and shrugged it off. "Twenty words of truth. So what?"

"Those twenty words will be the start of a new era for you. How does 'Aggressive and Arrogant Avery' sound for your title?"

I clenched my fist. "You won't get away with this!"

I like "Adventurous Avery".

He dropped my crutches onto the short, yellowing grass of fall. The apartment lights all turned off, leaving me alone in the darkness of the monster's soul.

I swung my legs to the front of my chest and hugged myself to bear the next day.
