Chapter 1: The Video

"Don't you dare make me eat you up! Listen to what I say to avoid it!" the monster in the video threatened.

Its red eyes beamed closer and closer until the lasers traveled into a little girl's eyes.

"Hi, Olivia!" the little girl said to her best friend, clearly ignoring the monster. "Oh my gosh, did you gain weight? You look like a giant compared to me!"

She gasped and covered her mouth in shame.

"Now you believe me?" the monster asked.

"H-how could you say such a thing?!" Olivia stammered.

"I'm sorry! I don't know what has gotten to me just now!"

"Sure. We're enemies now. Have a good life, Alyssa."

It seemed as though the Inequality Monster had gotten to her, causing her to lose those she cared for and loved!

Oh, please don't let that be me...

I snapped my head until it looked like I was built backward.

To my confusion though, no one was there.

That's so strange. That has to just be my mind playing games on me.

I didn't know whether I'd like to be the one captured and controlled by the monster or the one having the effect of it if I had to choose.

Terror shriveled down my spine, unlocking every brain cell I had in my six-year-old head.

However, I had to remember that I had school the next day, which in my case would be the very first day of grade school.

Hoping I wouldn't get nightmares, I went to sleep, checking every hidden area in my room.

The fact that I didn't sleep with my mom anymore frightens the heck out of me! There was no one to protect me but...myself.

What if I'm unconscious; then the monster makes me into a totally different person than who I am now?! What if my broken leg sets the scene for the entire school?!

The amount of pain I went through because of it might be worthless!

Know-it-all: Go back to sleep, darling.

Me: Are you the monster or the smart side?

My body couldn't function, no pun intended, when my cerebrum was baffled.

I mean, was the monster real or in my head?

In the video I accidentally clicked on, it was real nonetheless.

Receiving a pounding motion to my head, I knew it was better to sleep it off.

Or at least try to.

"Hello there, my friend."

"Who are you?"

"Do you not recognize me?"

"No, you ugly creep! Go away! Let me sleep in peace, will ya?!"

I kicked it.

"Oye, are you trying to hurt me? I'm nice!"

"You look just like the one I saw online! I'm Queen Avery now, alright? Listen to my commands!"

"You kids and your silly fairy tales! I'll let you go. For now. We shall meet again, but I do want you to know that you're The One who can stop me. Maybe."

"No, we can't ever meet again!"

"Honey, are you okay?" a voice called.

Oh great, is this another monster trying to get me?

"I heard you talking to yourself in there."

Wait, did she not hear the whole conversation? Is there something wrong with me or with her?

"Uh, yes mom! I'm fine!" I replied, realizing whose voice it was.

I didn't agree with what I spit out.

The next morning, I went to school but "walked" slower than everyone else due to my crutches.

"Why are you so slow? I'm trying to find my class," a girl taller than me remarked.

I'm trying to go to class, too.

I ignored her. She could be a few years older than me.

"If you continue to ignore me and cause me to look like a nobody, I'll make your life miserable."

"You're the one who'll be a nobody if you keep this up," I said abruptly.

I then noticed that she began to run after me, but when I thought this was the end, my arms and leg moved faster with each step escaping her grasp.

"The Inequality Monster is getting to you!" I screamed and went into the classroom.

As I went to class, I closed my eyes and covered my ears from her obnoxious laughter.

"Good morning, class! I'm Ms. Reagan, and I'm your teacher for the school year! Some rules I have in this classroom that I hope will carry onto other parts of your life include being respectful and encouraging to others," the teacher announced.

I already know someone didn't follow the rules.

Each of us was assigned a partner and we began playing Bingo with numbers. Mine was a blonde girl named Isabella.

"Our first number is G7."

"I-I might not be good since my parents say I have d-dys-l-," Isabella tried to say.

"Dyslexia?"

She nodded.

"Don't worry about it," I smiled. "I got this."

I found G7 in the upper-right-hand corner.

"Good job for being so thoughtful to Isabella, Avery! Here's a starburst as a treat," Ms. Reagan said, handing me an orange-flavored candy.

I can proudly say that the bully never received candies for following the rules...

"Thank you so much!"

We continued playing, and since it was a minimum day, I went home early. I needed to ask my parents about the monster.

"Hi sweetie, how was the first day of school?" my mom queried.

"It was good, but I think the Inequality Monster got some older kids as they began to bully me for having these crutches."

"Avery, there's no such thing as the...monster you were saying," she sighed.

"I knew we shouldn't have given her full access to the internet before grade school!" my dad face-palmed.

"Well, I thought she'd watch Peppa Pig or something, not whatever monster show!"

"Well, I think you probably just had a lot on your mind, so stay calm and don't worry, okay?" my mom reassured me.

I need to defeat it.
