Chapter 31: Think you got what it takes? (Part 1)

Quick note, this chapter has two parts and that's it!

Now I hope you're ready..to get freaky on this Friday night ;))

Art by me!

——————————————

The end of the week is here. Friday. And the group was in the living room discussing where they would all want to go for dinner. For some reason, Flowey was the only one who didn't want to join in on the conversation, so he stayed in his/Monika's room.

"Maybe we should go to Denny's?" Sal suggested.

"I'm not really in the mood for breakfast food." Cuphead replied. "They have more than breakfast food Cups." His brother confirmed.

"Maybe Outback?" Madotsuki suggested next. "Hmmm I'm really not sure.." Bendy thought out loud.

"How about McDonald's?!" Mae exclaimed. "M-Mae that's a fast food p-place." Kris reminded. "But why not though?!"

"I can't even eat to begin with." Freddy commented. "I somehow can eat and I'm—uh.." Spooky immediately stopped herself from speaking any further. Freddy turned his head and looked at her, raising an eyebrow.

"Ok. What does everyone feel like eating for the most part?" The neighbor spoke up and asked. Everyone pondered on that question for a brief moment. "Hmmm...a burger?" Monika suggested. And surprisingly, everyone felt the same way.

"Alright then. So where would you all like to go where there's burgers?" The neighbor asked. "I think we should just look around instead, because I think if we continue to sit here, we're not gonna have any dinner." Spooky recommend. Everyone else agreed to that plan.

"I-I'll get Flowey. I-I'll be right back." Kris told everyone before running off and sliding gracefully into the hallway where the flower's room with his socks. He was about to knock on the door, when he heard.....singing??

Kris quietly left a crack of the door open to hear none other than Flowey singing. He was singing one of the songs he sung the other day, while Kris was playing the piano for the background music. It was a song from Steven Universe, obviously, and from the lyrics Flowey was singing, Kris knew what song he was singing. "Escapism."

"I guess I'll face,
That in this awful place,
I shouldn't show a trace, of doubt...

But pulled against the grain,
I feel, a little pain,
That I would rather do without..

I'd rather be..
Free..free...
I'd rather be..
Free..free..

Free..free..
From here..."

Kris smiled from ear to ear at the flower's performance. He couldn't help but clap as soon as he finished the song, making the flower immediately snap his attention to the doorway where Kris was. Flowey's face became redder than a tomato or a cherry. And if it wasn't Kris who had found him like that, that person would have been dead by now.

Flowey averted his eyes away from the door, hiding his flushed face. Kris walked over to him and picked the flowerpot that was on the desk, sitting next to Flowey's flowerbed with it.

"T-That was awesome Flowey." Kris smiled warmly. Flowey only growled, not sparing even a glance at his human friend. "You sound amazing, e-even if you're not with me." Flowey just growled briefly again, making Kris chuckle to himself.

"W-well, w-we've decided that we're gonna drive around a-and see where we're gonna eat tonight." Flowey sighed. "....fine.." He said quietly, before traveling into his flowerpot, keeping his face lowered and away from Kris. The boy didn't force him to look at him, he picked up Flowey and brought him to the living room where everyone was waiting.

"H-hey guys. D-did you know that Flowey w-was singing in the room j-just now?" Kris said unexpectedly, making the usual curious ones kind of interested in the topic. Flowey was about to ring Kris' neck, but refrained from actually doing it.

He honestly wouldn't do it either way.

The crew drove around in the neighborhood, finding themselves quickly out of the neighborhood and into the outskirts of town, leading into the nearby city. The drive there was only 25 minutes, so luckily it wasn't too far. Yet they all haven't decided on what they all wanted to eat. They drove around the city a bit more, until Fran pointed a building out.

It was a nice enough size for a big restaurant. From the distance, it had neon pink, read, blue, green, and even purple colors that made it look even more interesting. The neighbor decided that they can go check it out and headed towards the place.

They finally stopped at the place and parked in the parking lot that was in front of the big restaurant. Everyone got out of the car—Holy crap.

Once the stepped out, they all took a good look at the restaurant. It did have its neon purple, pink, green and blue colors, but the place also read on the sides: "Donuts, Milkshakes, Burgers, Fries...Rap battles???!"

The best part about the front of this absolutely fantastic looking restaurant was the sign. And the fact that there was music playing. And let me tell you-the beat was so good-that even the sign was moving to the beat.

The restaurant sign read:

"Friday Night Funkin."

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

Huh. What a coincidence to find this place on a Friday. Though it didn't matter to any of them at the time because most of them broke found their long trance and started full on dancing and jamming in the middle of the parking lot for 5 minutes straight. I mean..could you blame them?

The neighbor had to stop almost everyone and grabbed Cuphead and Madotsuki who couldn't stop themselves from dancing and dragged them inside. However, some noticed a smaller sign before walking into the building. It read:
"Weeks available:
Week 1
Week 2
Week 3"

...what??? Wonder what that means..

They've all finally made it into the restaurant and from the looks of it, it was packed. I guess the music wasn't the only thing that was really good here.

"Holy shit..that was awesome.." Cuphead commented, catching his breath from all of that dancing. "OH MY GOD I KNOW RIGHT?!" Literally Mae, Sal, Kris, Maddy, Bendy, Spooky and Monika said at the same time, making them all laugh. With the same amazed tone. The others most definitely agreed as well, in their own ways.

A lady in the restaurant's uniform came up to the front. "Hi!" She greeted nicely with a welcoming smile. "How many tonight?" The neighbor quickly continued. "18." He replied.

The lady looked around for a brief moment at the area and at the guests and their progress of their meals. "I believe we should have a table ready in...15 minutes." She stated. The neighbor turned to the group. "Do you all still want to stay he-" "YES!!!" The majority of the group responded immediately, almost sounding like a sudden and desperate demand. The neighbor shrugged. "Ok." He said. The lady smiled. "Do you have a name?" "Neighbor." The lady wrote that down on her clipboard paper, ignoring the odd name.

The group sat down and waited. Some remained standing. And others once again started dancing to the music that was in the restaurant. That included the nae nae.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

15 minutes went by and a big coward finally left, making room for the indie group to finally be seated in. "Neighbor." The lady alarmed the man, catching his attention and grabbing the rest of the group's attention as well. "Follow me please." She smiled as they all followed her into the restaurant, stopping at a pretty big table. They probably had to get other tables and push them together to make one big table, as well as get enough chairs for everyone.

"You're waiter will be right with you." The lady said before walking off.

They all sat down and took a moment to look around the place even more. There was wall that was fulled with red, blue, purple and green arrows going up, down, left and right, a little bar place with cute little lantern lights hanging from above, as well as ever other seating place having them too. There was even a wall that looked like a graffiti artist did that contained very colorful and abstract style to it, with a big messy white "No" symbol in the middle and a white slitghty less messier message verbally at the right hand corner of the wall that read:
"Stay Funkin!"

Believe it or not..this place...was freakin awesome.

After all of that, everyone finally took a look at their menus...which already had some pretty awesome choices to choice from. How has none of them known of this place before?!

"How have known of us known of this place before?!" Monika asked suddenly. A bunch of replies and comments among themselves and each other rang out. In conclusion, they had no idea.

That was when Freddy noticed the stage, with big speakers that hung above both sides of the stage. It was also only a couple of feet away from them, which was close. His brows furrowed in confusion.

"Hey guys. Do you see that?" He point to the stage as everyone looked and turned around to see it. "What's that for?" The bear asked. "I-it said that in the front t-that they do..rap battles?" Kris said. "Yeah! They said that next to the big sign." Mae added.

"That's really interesting." Sal commented. "That's AWESOME if this place holds rap battles!" Cuphead exclaimed, making Mugman and Hat kid nodded in agreement. Flowey stared at the stage for a little bit. It was weird though...

The wall on the back of the stage looked...holographic...odd..Why would that be there?

Just then, their waiter has arrived, wearing the same uniform for this place. She had a blue and yellow spilt face showing her happiness and usually how she would normally look. The girl also talked an unexpected masculine voice, kind of throwing everything off at first.

"Greetings humble customers! You can address me as ENA! May I take your beverage orders on this fine Friday night?" She poetical and nicely asked, a little notebook and pen in her hand. The group was stunned by the way she presented herself, but one by one gave their drink orders as the girl wrote them all down.

"Thank you! I will now bring those in right away!"

"Hey lady." Flowey spoke up, stopping ENA from walking away and grabbing everyone's sudden attention. "This place holds rap battles right?" "You are most certainly correct." The abstract girl replied. "Then why is there a holographic screen in the back?" "I am so glad you asked!" She exclaimed.

"You see, this place doesn't hold any normal rap battles one would find on your local sidewalk or stage. This experience is designed for the ones who want to immerse themselves into the true meaning of funkin! Anyone is welcomed to try, just sign up and let the music fully impress you!" Flowey raised an eyebrow at this.

"Well! I will be right back with the drinks you all ordered!" ENA said before walking off.

The group sat once again stunned. Spooky was the first to speak up.

"One: I love our waitress! Wait..is she actually a "waitress"? With her voice and all" "She might be non-binary." Sal shrugged. "T-that's really cool." Kris commented, with Mae agreeing.

"Ok ok! Two: I love this place! And three: SOMEONE has to try that out!" Spooky continued excitedly. "How about you try it? You were the one that suggested it." Maddy said. "I'm not good at singing. We need someone that's good at singing!"

"I haven't sang in a while.." Freddy added. "Neither have I." Bendy added. "Though I don't think I'd be the rapping type of guy." He chuckled to himself. Kris sat there, until he just spilled his guts.

"Flowey." He said, almost like he was choosing him, which he was.

Flowey shot up. "What?"

"You should sing." Kris looked at him with hopeful eyes, despite them being covered by his long bangs. Everyone else realized this idea too and was immediately down for it.

"No. No no no n! I am not-"

"Here are you're fresh cold beverages!" ENA came back and gently placed the filled glasses in front of very person. Flowey sighed very deeply to himself, then looked up at the two faced girl.

"You...said anyone could sign up..right?" "You are correct!"

Flowey sighed deeply again, taking a look at Kris, who looked back at him.

....

"I'll try it out.."

The table immediately exploded (not literally guys, calm down), almost knocking over the drinks. Kris couldn't stop smiling, he just felt so proud of Flowey.

"That's wonderful to hear, dear flower! Though, should I take your orders before we begin?" ENA asked politely.

Oh shit. That's right.

The gang gave ENA their orders as she wrote them down in her tiny notebook. "Splendid! I will get those orders right in! And I will get some others to help you set up for your wonderful performance dear flower!" ENA excitedly said before walking off.

Flowey huffed deeply and turned to everyone in the group with a stern look.

"I HATE all of you."

That of course didn't mean anything to anyone. Kris especially wasn't affected by it. He still couldn't stop smiling from all of this.

"I love you too Flowey." He chuckled.

^^^^^^^^^^^

One of the employees that worked in the restaurant led Kris to the stage where he held Flowey in his hands. As the two came up closer to the stage, they noticed more things they didn't see the first time they looked. There was a monitor of some sorts that didn't look like a monitor you'd see when you go bowling. There was also little stairs to go up onto the stage. The stage Flowey will be singing on.

Another employee was able to turn the whole system on, so now it can all fully work.

"Ok so this is kind of different from your usual "rap battles." The employee said, walking over to the monitor with Kris and Flowey right behind. "You would first have to sign in and enter your name. So who will be playing?"

"U-um he will." Kris gestured at the flower in his hands. "Alright then! He would have to enter his name into the system." The employee showed the two from the monitor and Kris helped Flowey do just that.

The screen then changed to this title screen with the logo of the restaurant on the left hand corner, along with this girl with amber hair and a red dress with red heels, bobbing her head back and forth to the same music that played in front of the building. She also sat on these big speakers with her legs crossed, along with text displayed at the bottom saying:
"Press enter to begin."

The employee tapped the screen, making it blink of a brief moment with a fun confirm sound effect. Another screen then appeared with the only options saying:
"Story Mode
Free Play
Options."

In the background, there was also a drawing of this guy and this girl, presumably the same one from the title screen. The guy looked like he was singing really loud, due to his expression and the girl looked like she was trying not to get flown away from the speakers. Maybe because of how high they were put, as well as holding on to her dress.

"Ok! So..like I said, this is a bit different from your usual "rap battles." The employee began to explain. "Here, you have your options: Story Mode, Free Play, and of course, the options. I suggested you start with Story mode first since this is your first time here right?" The two both nodded. The employee pressed "Story Mode", as it made that same sound effect again.

Another screen appeared again. This time it showed a yellow banner with characters on it, as well as a week score on the top left hand corner and the tracks or song names on the left hand side, along with the "Weeks" including the first one, the Tutorial.

"So these here are your songs and people you can play against. I would suggest starting with the tutorial just to get used to the way this all works. But you have week 1, 2, and 3 for now." The employee quickly scrolled through the weeks as different characters as well as the names for the weeks pop up on the upper right hand corner of the screen. That same girl from the options menu and the title screen was also there.

"And for the most part, these weeks usually contain 2 to 4 songs. They get harder as the week goes on, at least I think..but anyways! That's that and now..!"

The employee gestured for the two to stay right there as they quickly walked off. The music suddenly stopped in the restaurant, alerting everyone including the indie group and especially the ones who have been on the restaurant before. They know what's about to go down.

The same employee came back with a microphone in their hand. "And here's your microphone. Try speaking into it." They said with a smirk on their face as they held out the microphone to Flowey.

The flower was hesitated for a moment before speaking into it.

"Beep."

Flowey quickly slapped his mouth shut with his leaf-like hand, confused and baffled. Kris was just as confused and surprised as he was. Everyone else from the table saw this and were absolutely bewildered as well.

"You wanna try again?" They asked, this time handing the microphone to the flower. He looked at it before speaking again.

"Beep bop?"

He covered his mouth again. And Kris was smiling like crazy. "T-that is the cutest thing I-I've ever seen."

"And that's how your going to sing." The employee said, making Flowey even more confused now. He moved the microphone away from his face.

"Then how am I gonna sing if I can't even use actually words?!" The employee smirk even wilder. "When the song begins, usually the character that your going up against will say something, but the thing is, there's really no actual words at all. However, you have to repeat what that character says. The arrows that will be behind the character will help you see when you need to say your lines during a song, as well as a "health bar" to see how good you're doing in the song. The arrows will also appear on the actual screen, so everyone else can see how your doing.

Oh! And the holographic stuff will not only be on the screen, but also next to you as well, almost like your actually battling someone."

"T-That sounds so awesome." Kris commented. "It definitely is. So if your ready, you can start. I also suggest you starting the songs for him, since they are kind of timed to when the start." The employee mentioned to Kris. The boy nodded.

"But how am I gonna "stand" up there, I'm kinda.." Flowey also mentioned, looking down at his pot that he's in. The employee walked over and got a wooden crate that was perfect for Flowey as they placed it on the right side of the stage.

Kris looked at Flowey and smiled. "You ready?" He calmly asked. "No." Flowey simply said. Kris chuckled, walking up the little stairs and placing Flowey down on it, crouching next to him. "W-we'll do tutorial first, so you can get the hang of it ok?" Flowey just looked at Kris, then spoke into the into the microphone, not taking his eyes off of his friend.

"Beep bop." He said. Kris laughed a little. "You sound like a vocaloid." "What the hell is that?" Flowey asked, speaking away from the microphone. Kris laughed again.

"I-I'll tell you later. Good luck." Kris said to Flowey before walking down the stairs and to the monitor.

The next thing he hears is cheers from the indie table...and unfortunately everyone else too. Including Kris.

Flowey groaned deeply, before he heard a loud sound effect. He looked up at the screen and saw that same girl from the monitor was now on the big screen, big speakers and all. She played a little animation, counting down with her fingers from 3 with even an actual voice in her speaking. There was words on the screen, when the girl was counting done. They said: "Ready..Set..Go!" And then music began to play.

The flower took a deep breath before he began singing. This was some much less nerve racking when it was just him and Kris.

[There should be a GIF or video here. Update the app now to see it.]

"Left..Right..Left..Right.." The girl instructed, doing little animations of pointing left to right.

"Beep..bop..beep..bop.." Flowey sang into the microphone.

"That's how you do it!" The girl did a little cheering animation before continuing.

"Up..down..up..down.." She instructed once more, pointing up then down. Flowey continued to sing along.

"Ba..do..ba..do.."

"That's how you do it!" The girl cheered again.

"Left..up..down..right.."

"Beep..ba..do..bop.."

"Down..down..up! Down..down..right.."

"Do..do..Ba! Do..do..bop.."

"Down up right up! Right!"

"Do ba bop ba! Bop! Do do bap do do bap bap bop bop!"

The song finally came to an end, making the girl give one last cheer animation, along with her saying: "Week cleared!" The same words also showing up on the screen, before it all generated away.

Everyone cheered and clapped for Flowey. Though he honestly felt a little flustered and didn't see what the big deal was considering it's only the tutorial. Kris got up from his seat that was given to him by one of employees.

"Y-you did awesome!" Kris exclaimed with a smile. Flowey tried to hide his embarrassed blush and rolled his eyes. "It's only the tutorial you know." "I-I know. D-do you want to do week 1? O-our food isn't h-here yet." The flower looked at the microphone, then back at Kris.

"Sure. Whatever." Kris' smile grew as he walked over and got "Week 1" ready. On the monitor it showed the guy with glowing, streaking eyes with a mischievous smile on his face. The title for the week said:
"Daddy Dearest."

(To be continued..)
