The First Date
Last chapter of The Incomer: Hated by death
[Zeev's PoV]
I remembered everything! First I felt happy about it, but then I realized that it was my punishment, instead of death. I remembered everyone but no one remembered me. Not even a single soul in the world had an idea that I exist. They forgot the Zeev Storm, whom they cherished once upon a time as a great actor.
The people aside, my own brothers didn't remember me. When I woke up inside my flat at Mayfair, no one was around me. Zack and Stan suddenly turned into patriots. On searching for them throughout the country, I found that Stan rejoined the Britain army and Zack joined the police department. I tried to approach them, but they ignored me like I was a stranger. Only my wealth and properties were along with me, which was also a punishment, as wealth could be miserable when there is no one to share it along. Thus, I lived like a walking corpse.
I didn't meet Debbie, as I knew she also wouldn't remember me. Though I knew, I didn't want to believe that, so I lived with a false belief that Debbie has not forgotten me, and she would come back to me one day. Instead, the ring that I wore on Debbie's finger came back to me, I didn't know how. Death must've hated me very badly, as it didn't take me along when I chose for it.
I decided to move away from my home and pretend to forget everything like the others did. So I sold my apartment and stayed in a hotel for a few days. But that also didn't help. The memories kept haunting my dreams so I decided to leave London. I booked a flight ticket to Germany for that day night.
I vacated my room and was about to leave to the airport. But fate decided to play a game in my life. I came back to the hotel room, as I forgot Debbie's ring. I picked the ring from the room and took a last look of Mayfair through the window. The door of the room opened, and as I turned, she stood there.
It was not a dream or a hallucination. It was really Debbie. She stood before me, beautiful like always, with her hazel eyes sparkling. I wished inside that she should remember me.
"You..you are" said Debbie, and my hopes were dragged down to the ground. A lump formed in my throat. I couldn't reply anything except, "Zeev Storm"
I couldn't restrict myself. I ran to her and embraced her tightly.
"I missed you so much" I cried. I felt her body shivering due to her wet shirt.
"But who are.." began Debbie, but before that I closed her mouth with my hand.
"I would leave soon, so pretend that you know me very well, till I leave" I pleaded. Then I realized that Debbie couldn't endure the cold, "Sorry. Go inside and change. I'll wait for you."
Debbie nodded and she ran into the dressing room. Within ten seconds she came out wearing a yellow sweatshirt.
"Where have you been?" said Debbie. Anxiousness was spread all over her face.
"Just searching something" I replied
"Did you find it?"
"Yes. But I don't have the right to own it." If I had talked anymore, I would've burst out, so I opened the door of the room, planning to leave.
"Shall we meet again?" said Debbie. My fingers turned white as it tightened on the door handle. I didn't turn back.
"We shan't. I'm leaving London today." I said vaguely and walked out of the room, banging the door behind.
*************
My bill wasn't prepared, so I was asked to wait in the lounge. My mind was insisting me to run for Debbie and hold her tight.
After a minute, Debbie walked towards the reception, inquired something to the receptionist, and left disappointed. Instinctively, I ran towards Debbie and held her wrist. She looked at me, stupefied. I didn't know how to respond.
"I actually want to... I was in thought of... No, not like that... Shall we meet again?" I said finally. I failed miserably.
"Sure" smiled Debbie. My insides overwhelmed with joy. I left her hand and she walked through the door.
[End of Zeev's PoV]
*************
It was time for dinner. As usual Luke cooked the dinner in Debbie's home. Della was helping Luke, but Debbie didn't, as she knew that she would be a third wheel, disturbing the couple. She felt awkward to stay in the house, and most of the time she pretended to be a mannequin.
"Debs..Dinner is ready" called Luke. Only after that, Debbie came out from her room. The aroma from the kitchen was mouth-watering. Debbie didn't eat much in the morning, so she decided to finish everything in the kitchen by herself.
As she walked towards the dining room, she received a text message. It was from an unknown number.
Come down immediately. I'm in front of your apartment. - Zeev
Debbie's heart beat increased. She didn't care about her dinner.
"Luke I'm not hungry. I'm going to take a walk by the street" said Debbie
"Wait. Don't go alone" said Luke, but Debbie was not there to listen to him.
Debbie sprinted down the staircase, and dashed out through the main door. Zeev was waiting by the side of the pavement. He was in his shorts and sweatshirt. Debbie couldn't stop panting. Zeev smiled at her.
"Are you still afraid of elevators?" smirked Zeev
"How do you.." began Debbie, but Zeev gestured her not to ask, "Okay. I know you very well. Yeah I'm still scared of elevators." managed Debbie. Zeev began to laugh.
"You look cute when you act childish" chuckled Zeev, ruffling Debbie's hair.
"You must've left London by now, right?" said Debbie
"Yeah. But I wanted to have coffee with you, so I cancelled the flight."
"Really? You're crazy!"
"You've said that many times to me."
"Sure I would've. Since you cancelled the flight I'll buy the coffee." said Debbie, and they walked towards the Starbucks in the Porter's street.
It was closing time in the Starbucks when Zeev and Debbie entered. They occupied the last table. A weary waiter came to take order.
"Your order please" said the waiter, trying hard to control his yawn.
"I'll have whatever she's having" said Zeev
"Mam?" inquired the waiter
"We'll have two latte" said Debbie, staring into Zeev's eyes. The waiter left after taking the order.
"You know, you've been driving me crazy for the past few days. Because of you, the walls in my room are spoiled. Today itself I'm going to erase everything and paint the room completely white." said Debbie. Zeev who was drinking water, spat it out, coughing.
"White? No, don't do that. I suggest exotic colors like fuschia, chartreuse, crimson, carnation, or rainbow colors, that would be even better."
"Why are you so sentimental about a room color?" said Debbie
"Colors have vibrations. Good colors have positive vibrations. White has negative vibration. I have experience" said Zeev
"Is there something like that? Okay, then I'll paint it blue again"
"I would appreciate it" said Zeev
The waiter brought their coffee, and both of them drank in silence, staring at each other. Debbie paid for the coffee. The awkward silence continued as they walked by the pavement. Zeev broke the silence.
"Shall we hold hands?" said Zeev. Debbie didn't reply. "It's okay if you don't want to".
Debbie silently slipped her hand into Zeev's palm and locked her fingers with his. Zeev smiled and ruffled Debbie's hair again.
"Don't do that. My hair is getting spoiled." retorted Debbie. Zeev made her hair even more messier as she complained. Debbie kept struggling with Zeev, and swiftly someone rushed past them in a cycle. The next minute Debbie was on the pavement. Her hand was bleeding very badly. Zeev realized that the man who drove past them was a mugger. He cut Debbie's hand and stole her purse. Zeev ran behind him in blind rage.
"Zeev don't. Please come back" cried Debbie and Zeev stopped.
"Debbie are you alright? Should we go to a hospital?" said Zeev
"No. I'm fine. The wound is superficial. A small first aid at home would do." said Debbie. Zeev took a handkerchief from his pocket and tied it around Debbie's arm. They walked slowly and reached Debbie's home.
"Don't forget to do first aid" said Zeev
"I won't. Take care. Meet you tomorrow." said Debbie. A smile showed up at the edge of Zeev's mouth and Debbie ran inside swiftly.
***************
The next day, when Debbie woke up, she was moist from head to toe in sweat. Her heart was thumping hard inside her ribs and she felt apprehensive. Immediately she called Zeev, but Zeev didn't pick up. She called nearly twelve times and the call was attended on the thirteenth time.
"Zeev where are you?" inquired Debbie panicked.
"So his name is Zeev, huh?" said a voice which was not Zeev's, but Debbie found it familiar.
"Hello. Who is this. Where is Zeev?" said Debbie
"Your Zeev is with me at the Marylebone Station. Come and pick him up." said the man
"Marylebone Station? Is Zeev leaving somewhere?" said Debbie
"Not railway station Miss, he's right now at the police station."
"What? Wait I'll come there immediately" said Debbie. She rushed out from her bed. Without changing from the previous day's costume, she drove to the police station just like that.
Inside, there were many policemen working in the computer. At the corner of the room, was a small cell, where Zeev sat with his head on his knees. Next to him sat a young man with a bruised face which was black and blue in color. He looked like a college student. Debbie realized that, the man next to Zeev was the one who stole her purse the previous day. She understood why Zeev was inside the cell.
"Do you know him?" said the Inspector, who opened the cell and let out Zeev. The Inspector was a smart-looking man with a handsome profile. He might not be more than thirty.
"Yes Inspector. He saved me from that man yesterday. That guy inside the cell stole my purse and cut my hand." said Debbie.
"I thought so too" smirked the inspector, "I would've left your Zeev, if he had told me, who was he on the first place. He didn't open his mouth during the enquiry, that's why I kept him in the cell. Give a complaint about the robbery and take him along with you." said the inspector. Debbie filed a complaint about the robbery and she took Zeev along with her.
"Why you didn't tell anything during the enquiry?" questioned Debbie as she drove the car. Zeev remained silent.
"Open your mouth and tell something" yelled Debbie
"The inspector who arrested me is my brother Zack" said Zeev. Tears flowed from the corner of his eyes.
"He doesn't remember you?" said Debbie. Zeev nodded. Debbie increased the speed of her car.
"What are you doing? You are going to get us killed" wailed Zeev. Debbie didn't reply. She drove at high speed and finally came to a stop. Zeev was astounded, as the place where Debbie stopped the car was the tower bridge, the place where everything began.
"Debbie, how did you know this place?" said Zeev shocked.
"Get down" said Debbie. She got down the car and walked towards the railing of the bridge. Zeev followed her in astonishment.
"Zeev will you take me along with you when you leave London? We'll go somewhere where there are no people." said Debbie.
"Do you mean it?" said Zeev
"Give me your hand" said Debbie, and Zeev gave his right hand. Debbie twisted his hand, pushed him to the ground and placed her foot on his shoulder.
"Ouch. Debbie that hurts." screamed Zeev
"Why are you disturbing my life?" said Debbie and Zeev became silent for a minute. He began to cry in joy.
"Leave my hand, then I'll tell everything" said Zeev. Debbie smiled and left Zeev's hand. Zeev stood up and looked at Debbie with amazement.
"Do you really?" stammered Zeev in excitement.
"Yes. I remember everything. Your name was the only thing I remembered first and when I met you, everything broke out like a river breaking a dam. Not even death can make me forget you." said Debbie
"Why didn't you tell me?" blamed Zeev
"I just played with you for awhile." smirked Debbie. Zeev stood frozen, with tears continuously pouring out of his eyes. Debbie threw her arms around Zeev's neck and embraced him.
"I love you" whispered Debbie in Zeev's ear.
"I love you too" whispered Zeev.
And there came a Happily Ever After in their lives.
