Chapter 4:
Scrooge sat at his office still looking for a cure, however, the same results showed, 'No known cure. No known cure.'
Scrooge slammed his hand on his desk and let out a loud groan, loud enough for Mrs Beakly to hear it over her vacuuming, just down the hallway. "Mr McDuck...?" She hesitated.
Scrooge knew that voice and as soon as he heard it he quickly slammed the screen of his laptop down and tried to give Mrs Beakly a smile to tell her nothing was wrong but, unfortunately, being the top spy that she was, Mrs Beakly knew something was up, especially considering the boys were also acting strange earlier.
"Sir, May I remind you I was a top spy. You can't keep anything from me. So tell me, what mess have you got yourself into this time?" With one eyebrow raised leant against Scrooge's door frame waiting for an answer.
Still smiling nervously, Scrooge cleared his throat waiting for a miracle, waiting for something or someone to interrupt him because he knew he couldn't lie as Mrs Beakly would know, she always knew when someone was lying, especially when that someone was Scrooge. She had worked for Scrooge for years, she knew when he was lying.
"Sir, I'm waiting" Mrs Beakly tapped her foot.
Scrooge felt sweat drizzle down his forehead. He knew if Mrs Beakly found out what had happened to her granddaughter, Webby would be locked in the mansion again, this time for the rest of her life and as for Scrooge, he would have to give Mrs Beakly a raise and he would owe her for what he did to Webby.
Finally Scrooge's wish for a miracle came to life as the triplets came in with their hands on either sides of their heads with scrunched up faces.
"Ugh, Uncle Scrooge we cant take it anymore! Webby is..." Louie paused, noticing Mrs Beakly. "Umm...Webby...Webby is..." The triplets felt themselves sweat as well.
"Where is my granddaughter?" Mrs Beakly's eyebrows dropped as she shot the boys a glare. "Ugh I can't take it anymore! Webby is~" Huey quickly threw his hands on Louie's mouth, stopping him from spilling the truth.
Thankfully, Webby walked in, still asking a bunch of questions, "is...is right there. See? Hehehe, nothing to worry about." Huey gave a nervous smile to Mrs Beakly, chuckling awkwardly.
Mrs Beakly saw that her granddaughter was okay and still had a big smile across her face, which immediately calmed her nerves.
Webby realised the women who was standing beside her as she walked in, it was the same women who asked her how the adventure was, although she still didn't understand what the strange lady was talking about. "Hi, I'm Webby! ...I think" the boys all gasped as Huey pushed Webby out. "Haha, Webby, I thought we were done playing that game." Louie and Dewey followed behind. "Nothing to see here." Dewey assured.
Although, she still wasn't convinced that everything was fine, Mrs Beakly once again just blew the situation away, as if it never happened. Water off a ducks back.
She rolled her eyes and walked back down the hallway to finish vacuuming, luckily she was heading in the complete other direction than the kids.
When the boys and Webby got back to to their room and the door was closed, they all let out a sigh of relief as Dewey slid down the door behind them, smiling in relief.
"That was close." Louie wiped the sweat off his forehead and fell on his bed.
"What was close? Also who's that strange lady? Also why are you guys~" Webby was interrupted when Huey finally snapped, "What were you thinking?!" Louie and Dewey's mouth dropped open in surprise. Huey was supposed to be the sensible triplet, the oldest triplet, the one with the most patience. How can someone with so much patience have no patience at all?
Webby just looked at him with the same confused face she's been using all day. Silence filled the room, it was so silent you could hear a pin drop.
"Look, Huey's right, Mrs Beakly could've caught onto us!" Louie added.
Webby tilted her head. "Did I do something wrong?" She asked innocently.
Louie stood from his bed, throwing his arm carelessly in the air. "Yes! Don't you get it?! If Mrs Beakly finds out what happened to you she'll ground you for life! And if she finds out it's our fault, who knows what she'll~" Before Louie could finish scolding Webby, he heard Huey's voice, who seemed to have gone back to the voice of reason, or at least that's what they thought. "Actually...it wasn't our fault nor was is Scrooge's fault. It wasn't our fault, it wasn't Scrooge's fault and it certainly wasn't Launchpads fault." Huey's voice began to raise as that voice of reason faded away. "It was no ones fault but yours, Webby! I warned you to put your seatbelt on but noooo you just had to have it your way!" His face began to burn a bright red, almost as red as his hat.
Dewey slid firmly in front of Webby to defend her. "Guys stop! It's not her fault!" He spoke those words as if he actually meant them, until he turned around to his best friend and realised the words that were coming from Huey's mouth was the truth. "Actually you know what? I'm done defending you Webby! I defended you when we were going to leave you behind while we went to Funzos and look where that got us! Huey's right about you! You're not normal, even when you've got amnesia you're a freak!" He stood with his brothers, fists clenched and eyebrows dropped.
"Why can't you be like the rest of us?!" Louie added, throwing his arms in the air and taking a step towards his brothers and Webby.
Questions hit Webby so hard that she was forced to back up. The boys started heading towards her, all yelling at once With overlapping questions.
Webby still didn't understand what was going on but she knew it wasn't good.
She got faster and faster with each step she took back, until there was nowhere left to go.
She felt the door press up against her back. Now all Webby could feel was fear. She didn't know what the fear was or where it came from but she felt it.
She quickly threw her hands on either sides of her head just like she had seen the boys do earlier.
Webby crouched down and squinted her eyes as the boys towered over her. The words that were coming from their mouths suddenly became a blur.
"STOP!" Webby yelled as her mind took control of her mouth. It seemed to get the boys attention as their mouths shut and they took a step back, surprised.
Webby never yells, then again, that wasn't Webby. It was a scared little girl who needed help overcoming this impossible case, this case that now seemed incurable.
Webby stood up and saw the triplets horrified faces and with no words......she was gone. Covering her eyes, she ran to a room far away from theirs and slammed the door. The noise made by the door was so loud you would've been able to hear it from the other side of Duckburg.
Dewey realised what he had done, he had upset his best friend, someone who rarely gets upset, a strong girl who's heart couldn't be broken, except it could and it did.
Dewey tried to run after Webby but Huey grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back, "Maybe it's best we leave her for a while." Huey suggested.
Dewey thought for a second, he was the one who hurt Webby the most, the one who broke her heart, the one who turned a strong warrior into a scared little girl who had no understanding of what was going on or who she was. Dewey knew that he was the last person she would want to see.
* * * * *
Webby slid down the door as small, strange drops began to form in her eyes, one by one slowly rolling down her face. She tried to wipe them away but they kept coming. "What...what is this?" She sobbed.
Webby didn't understand what was going on but she felt the need to let it all out and that's what she did. The barrier around her fragile heart had been broken by someone close to her, someone she didn't remember, yet knew so well. She felt as if the three strange boys were her brothers. Brothers who broke her heart. Brothers who she had let down. She didn't know how. She didn't know why. But she knew she let them down.
