Lost Uncle

The three rode into a very small town, it seemed to only have an Inn, a tavern, a couple houses, and a few stores and a stable. Emelia and Henry had barely spoken the entire trip, Abe was happy to be around more people, though there were very few in this town, the human interaction would be nice.

They tied their horses at the stable and rented a large room at the Inn, renting one room was cheaper than two, and then they walked to a store to get a few supplies. The man working the counter gave them an odd look, especially Emelia, it almost looked like he was trying to recognize her.

Henry walked to the counter, "Excuse me sir, do you know where the nearest train station is?" He asked, "Yeah, keep riding East, you come to a town called Little Oak or somthin' like that, and they got a train station there." He stated matter-of-fact-like. Henry thanked him and nodded, and walked around the store, Emelia approached and paid for a box of matches, and a couple spools of thread and needles, using the same needles to patch herself up with over and over was getting kind of unsanitary.

The man stared at her, "Where you guys from? You're all together right?" He asked, "Uh, yeah, we're just three friends traveling together for a while, I'm from Maine and the tall guy is from Indiana and the other guy's from England, he moves around a lot." She explained, the man nodded.

Emelia noticed his accent, it seemed he was from further up north, almost sounded like he was from Maine, "I used to live in Maine, then some accident happened and I moved away, didn't like a eerie feeling of the air and what not." He replied. "I'm Emelia Kyle, by the way." She held her hand out to him to shake it, his hand never reached hers, "Kyle? You're not by chance Loraine and Joseph's girl are ya?" He asked, eyes nearly popping out of his head.

Emelia stared at him a moment, Henry and Abe walking closer now as to watch the interaction. "U-uncle Jeremiah?" She asked, almost unsure of herself, he smiled and walked around the counter to hug her, "I thought you were dead, kiddo, how in the hell did you get along without your parents? And what even happened?" He asked.

"I-I've gotten along just fine, I take work where I can and I'm traveling with friends." She said, though she was sick of saying 'friends', she wasn't sure if her and Henry were even friends anymore at this point, and she didn't even really know why. "And your parents?" He inquired, "Some man came to the door one night, and I'd left the house for only a moment, and he...he killed them..." She went quiet.

Henry sensed her sadness and stood a little closer, Abe frowned, "I'm sorry kid, if you'd have come, I could've taken care of you after that. But what happened to the man?" He asked, "I killed him." Emelia replied in an somber tone.

Jeremiah looked taken aback, but hugged her again anyway, "You always were a strong girl, I'm glad you still are, tell you what, you're in town, this is a reunion. You and your friends can stay at my place, your aunt'll cook us up a hot meal, and we can catch up." He suggested, Emelia looked to Abe and Henry, they both seemed to enjoy the idea, though now it would be harder for Henry.

Being a vampire and all, he can't exactly eat human food anymore, drink sure, but food was different now.

"Great, I get off of work here in an hour, so meet me at the front of the store then, and we'll get to my house." He nodded and went back to work. Henry, Emelia and Abe walked out and Abe went to cancel their room at the Inn.

"You've been quiet.." Emelia stated while looking anywhere but at Henry, "So have you." He countered with more confidence. "Did I upset you?" Emelia asked, almost sounding hurt, "Why would you think that?" Henry asked, now looking at the woman beside him. "You haven't spoken a word to me since Abe suggested that we become a team.." said Emelia, "You haven't spoken to me much since the tavern so" Henry began

"Just stop making this feel weird, please? I feel like I've wronged you and I hate it!" Emelia raised her voice, "Are you upset that I have to go to New York and can't be in yours and Abe's little team?" Henry asked, his temper raising too. "No, I just want you to talk to me again, and stop making me feel like shit!" She yelled, "You feel like shit? Can you imagine how I felt when you and-forget it. I'm not wasting my time arguing with the likes of you." He spat.

"And just what does that mean Mr. Sturges?" She asked, her arms crossed now, "You're a woman, you'll probably kill me if you loose the argument, that's what I meant." He stated, "I'm about as far as you can get from a woman, and I've lost a lot of arguments and those people are still alive, for your information." She retorted. Henry rolled his eyes and walked away a step.

Emelia was about to say something when they heard a man yell, the two of them dashed off,Abe heard and was on his way as well. They saw a man being dragged by a man and a woman, vampires.

They picked up the man and dashed off faster, Henry following closer behind, Emelia behind him. They reached an old mill, a small river beside it, a water wheel jammed and not turning anymore. Emelia drew her blade and threw it, it hit the male vampire in the side and he dropped the man, both vampires turned and attacked.

The man, now unconscious, lie beside the mill. Emelia saw Abe making his way through the wood to where they were. Emelia swung her blade at the male vampire and missed, he grabbed her and dragged her to the river, Henry was toe-to-toe with the other vampire, and Abe checked on the man quickly, then began to aid Henry, who was getting his ass kicked. The vampire stuck Emelia's head beneath the water and tried to drown her.

She tried to scream for Abe or Henry, but her screams were muffled by the water. Henry saw her struggling and hurried over, leaving Abe with the other vampire. They'd worked so well together last time, but now they were getting their asses kicked by only two vampires.

Henry grabbed the vampire by the shoulder, and ripped his arm right from its socket, he screamed and dropped Emelia, she stood quickly, drenched in water and coughing. She drew her pistol and shot the vampire Abe was being punched by in the head. She killed it.

Henry ripped the other's head clean off, blood gushing over him and Emelia. They were all panting, Emelia was still coughing, she took a step and fell, she looked at her leg, and saw a gash in it, the vampire must've gotten her and she hadn't realized it.

She yelled in pain, and Henry tried to aid her. "I'm f-fine." She muttered, "You are clearly not fine!" He shouted, and again tried to help her, "I can fix it myself!' She shouted back, "Why are you being so difficult!?" "why are you being an ass!?" "You're the one who won't speak to me!" "You've barely said a word to me since the last town, I just don't wanna make you more pissy!" "You're the one being pissy!"

"Enough!" Abe shouted, they both stared wide-eyed at the soft spoken tall man, and moved away from each other. "You two were inseperable when I first met you, and now you're acting like children and fighting with each other, just figure out your problems and talk it out. This is getting ridiculous!" He shouted at the two of them.

Emelia just scowled and Henry huffed, she began fixing her leg, Henry didn't try to help. She felt as though she may cry, she couldn't even talk to her best friend, and he wouldn't speak to her. She wanted things how they were before, she wanted long, late night talks, and drinking and laughing with him and Abe. She didn't see how it would be that way again.

Henry wanted to help her, he really did, but he didn't want to anger her further, he felt a pang of grief and anger in his un-beating heart, and walked away from the woman he seemed to have feelings towards, maybe he didn't really like her that way. He couldn't tell, but he wanted his friend back.

"Emelia, can you still ride a horse? We have to get to Little Oak in the early morning tomorrow." asked Abe, "I can ride." She replied and stood, shakily, but began walking, only with a limp. "Let's get cleaned up and get to the store, my uncle will be waiting.." She said and shed her white shirt, leaving her in her pants and an under-shirt.

The men followed her example and cleaned up as best they could. After they washed, they walked, and limped, back to the store where her uncle was looking at his pocket watch. He saw them and smiled, then noticed Emelia's leg, "What happened!?" He asked, now alarmed. "I'm fine, I just took a tumble over near the woods." She reassured him.

He took them to his house and told his wife to get some food going, something hot, and he got the good brandy. They sat around the table and ate, aside from Henry, he made it look like he ate, but he drank. Emelia told him what she could, minus all the vampires and depression and nightmares.

"Well you three must be tired, you can sleep in the kids old room, there's a bunk bed and an extra cot on the side." He said and led them to the room. "Can you wake us at three uncle Jeremiah? We have to get Henry to the train station early." "Of course kiddo, get some rest." He nodded and closed the door for them.

Abe took the top bunk and Emelia took the bottom, and Henry took the cot across from her. Emelia and Henry looked at each other for a moment, then looked away. "Goodnight you two." Abe called from the top bunk, "Goddnight." "G'night.." They muttered, sleep didn't come easy for Emelia. She recalled the fight with Henry, she wanted to apologize and make it right again, but she didn't know how, and tomorrow she would have to say goodbye to him for a few weeks, she didn't even know if she'd see him again.

Henry feared the same thing as he lie away on his cot in the stuffy room, he didn't want to have to actually say goodbye to Emelia tomorrow, he wanted to leave of good terms but he didn't want to start another fight. Hell, he didn't even know why they were fighting so how could he fix that? He wanted his friend back, the same girl who'd tried to kill him no more than a week ago. The same woman he seemed to have some kind of feelings for. He eventually fell asleep, and so did Emelia, only to be woken by a nightmare.

Not the same nightmare, it was different this time, it was about Henry leaving and getting killed. Emelia held back the hot tears that were threatening to fall, and stared at Henry for a while, and she felt something in the pit of her stomach and in her heart. She wanted to shake the odd feeling she got around him, but couldn't, she too eventually fell back into a light slumber, but still had a bad feeling inside her. They would have to part in the morning, and possibly never meet again. That's what they feared now.
