Longing
Weeks had past since Henry left, they were both running on little sleep, due to nightmare induced slumber. Emelia had taken a boat to Louisiana, she had heard from another hunter that there was a lot of vampire activity down there, she was further South than she liked to be, but if there was trouble, she had to help.
The reason she hated being that far South was because of slavery. Emelia hated it, the fact the some people thought they were above others, how would the rich feel if everything was taken from them? Emelia had everything either taken from her, or it left her. No rich folk could walk a day in her shoes, but at the same time, she knew others had it far worse than her.
She reached New Orleans at daybreak, there were people awake already and bustling about. New Orleans was quite a sight, yes, but it wasn't that fascinating to Emelia. Too dirty, too many rich folks buying slaves, right in the street. There was an auction going on, and she stopped and bowed her head, she prayed to God that he would help to free those poor souls.
She looked at the crowd of men dressed in fancy, dark clothes and glasses. She spotted at least a dozen vampires. Typical that they would be at a slave auction, she'd be here for a while. While she was coming up with a plan, a man bumped into her, nearly knocking her to the ground. "Watch it!" She said, "Sorry.." he replied with attitude, Emelia got a look at him, he looked like Henry. Her heart skipped, but when she realized it wasn't Henry, she frowned and walked away.
"I'll have to wait until night, most of these vampires know each other, so they should go to taverns together. So maybe if I pick them off a couple at a time, I can take care of this.." She thought to herself. She looked up and saw one of the vampires looking at her, he seemed different from the rest, like he knew something she and they didn't. He seemed like he knew he was above the rest of them, as if they were peasants, and he a king.
Emelia shot him a look, and walked on to a hotel. "Single bed, please." She told the man behind the desk, "Of course, may I take your bags to your room for you, miss?" He asked, "No thanks, I can handle it." She replied with a nod, and she walked to her room to get situated. She'd have to tell the keeper she would be here a couple weeks, she would need to seem like a tourist, or just someone on vacation. Make a name for herself, and then no one would suspect her as the killer of all those vampires.
The only good thing about New Orleans was that there were always a lot of people coming and going, so she wouldn't be suspected for anything.
She sat on the bed, and looked at her medal, she would have to go back to see Charlie in Maine soon. It had been a few months since she'd seen him. She looked at her bag, and her coat, and then to her blade and pistol. She hadn't been the same since he left, she felt as though a piece of her was missing, the one thing that helped to keep her going was gone.
She didn't know, but hundreds of miles away, Henry was feeling the same thing. He felt empty, more empty than usual at least. He wanted to get out of New York, as much as he usually loved it, he had to be very careful there when he fed, but luckily there were a lot of assholes there at the time, so he had plenty to work with. He longed to get back to his secluded home in Indiana, he longed to see his friend, Abe. He longed to make amends with Emelia. And hundreds of miles away, Emelia felt the same.
She longed to go back to a place she liked, she longed to see her friends Abe and Charlie, and she longed for Henry. She longed for his companionship, his friendship, his touch, his warm presence, she longed for him.
But they both knew things would never be the same between them, even if they did meet again.
Emelia waited until the auction was over, and she leaded back out into the streets to do her job. Three vampires walked into a bar, and she followed, once they were drunk enough, and had women at their sides, they headed back out into the streets. They were in an alley way, and headed to a large, fancy hotel. Much nicer than the one Emelia was staying at.
She didn't even try to hide, or use a tactic, she just leveled a gun to one's head, and shot. The women ran and screamed, never getting a look at who shot the gun. The other vampires turned and attacked, Emelia struck them with her blade, and used a martyr, a little thing Abe came up with to blind vampires, it was basically a large match as bright as the sun. She blinded them, and cut off their heads, and that was the end of them.
She didn't break a sweat, and Emelia had noticed the change in her, she was more violent toward what she killed, she didn't like it, but she just felt more angry. There was nothing to keep her sane, so all that insane anger that was in her, went towards the vampires she killed. Abe would scold her for how reckless she was.
They had ran into each other a week ago and took out a small nest of vampires, it went okay, but Abe seemed upset that she was so ruthless, and seemed to not have a good plan. They parted, and she was still ruthless.
She turned around, getting away from her thoughts, and saw a figure standing there, it was the same man, the man who seemed above everyone. "Well well well, a hunter, I haven't seen one around here for a while, the South is so swamped with vampires, they tend to stay away. What's your name, little miss?" He asked with a thick, southern accent.
"That's not your business, jackass!" She replied and readied her blade, "I don't want to fight you, new suit, you see." He gestured to his clothes, "I just want to warn you, stay out of the South, stay away from slavery and my vampires here. It's too big for you to even comprehend, you have no idea the operation I have going here." He said, "I've killed vampires like you before, I'm not afraid of you." replied Emelia.
"Ah, you may not be afraid of me, or even of death. But I know a couple friends of yours that you care deeply for, it would be a shame if something were to happen to them, wouldn't it?" He asked, he knew just what he was doing. "You don't know shit." "Oh, but I do, I know everything about everything...Miss Kyle." He hissed.
"I know about your tall friend, Lincoln, and about that rouge, traitor, Sturges too." He replied with a smirk. "Stay out of New Orleans, stay out of the South, or they die, and then you'll have to live with yourself." He stated, and walked away. Emelia felt herself grow angrier with every word that spilled from his ugly mouth, and she ran at him, and readied to strike with her blade.
He spun around faster than anything, Emelia didn't have time to stop herself, he grabbed her collar, and threw her into the brick wall of the hotel, and walked away. "Stay out of trouble, Miss Kyle." were the last words he said before he left. Emelia struggled to stand, and felt a sore spot in her leg. She limped over to the bodies, and dumped them into the water, not caring if anyone found them. She packed her bags, and left New Orleans.
As much as she wanted to kill every vampire here, she couldn't risk the lives of Abe and Henry. So she got back on the boat, and left. She planned on going to Maine, stopping at a couple other places on the way, places she knew vampires were hiding out.
It took a couple days to get back by boat, but when she stepped back onto land, she felt relieved. She was happy to be out of the far southern states, and back into Indiana territory. She got her horse from the stable, and paid the man who had watched her horse for those few days. He stopped her before she left, "A man left this for you." He said, "Did he leave a name?" She asked, "No, he just said to get this to you as soon as possible, ma'am." He replied and thrusted the letter to her.
Emelia thanked him again, and mounted her horse, and read the letter.
"Emelia, I need your help, meet me at the train station in Jamestown, I will be there at ten AM sharp, please don't be late. Yours Ever."
That was all it read, Emelia read it over and over. She had no idea who the letter was from, perhaps it was Abe, or Charlie, or one of the other hunters she'd met, but how would they know where to find her? Perhaps it was Henry. Emelia shook that thought from her head, the less she thought about him, the better, plus he was in New York, or back at his home in Indiana. He wouldn't want to speak to her anyways. They didn't exactly part as friends.
Emelia began riding to Jamestown, her mind going a million miles a minute, she didn't know if she was heading to meet up with a friend, fellow hunter, or if it was a trap, possibly set by the vampire she met in Louisiana. To say she was worried was an understatement. She would just have to wait and see.
