Long Unspoken
When Emelia finally came to, she found herself wrapped in blankets and Henry's arms. She felt herself stiffen, not quite used to the close contact of another person. She slowly relaxed, and sighed quietly, relishing in the warmth. She remembered everything that had happened the previous night, how she had to fight her friends, and how she killed Arthur Benningham. She remembered how she became when she was searching for the boys, how she tortured a vampire with fire until she told her the plan.
Emelia frowned, she told herself she would never become that ruthless again, but she had to find her friends, she countered with herself. She was shaken from her thoughts, when Henry shifted slightly, she felt her heart beat faster when she saw his face. His hair was messy, and his stubble seemed to have grown more than when she last noticed.
She saw his eyes flutter open slowly, she saw his deep brown eyes stare into her own. "Morning.." Emelia said quietly, Henry realized he was still holding onto her, and he took his arms away and sat up, "I-....I'm sorry, you uh, l-looked cold last night...and I um-" "Henry" She cut him off, and he felt a heat rise up his neck. "It's okay, thank you for getting me out of there last night." She said.
"I should be thanking you, so should Abe. You saved our lives, you risked your own life for us...for me." Henry replied with a small smile, "I guess we're even now, right?" asked Emelia, Henry chuckled and thought back. "Yeah, we're even." He replied. "I guess we just need to stop getting hurt or kidnapped and we won't have to save each other's asses as often." Emelia joked.
Emelia sat upright, and felt the wound in her side, it was stitched and bandaged. She looked at Henry, and scanned him for the bullet wound she caused. "It healed." Henry said, reading her mind. "Stop reading my mind you creep." Emelia replied with a smile as she stood up.
Emelia went to her bag and got clean clothes, she got changed behind the divider and then sat on the bed. As Henry went to change into a clean shirt and pants, Emelia's mind went back to last night. "He is something to you, isn't he?" She heard the sickening accented voice say, she tried to shake the images of Henry sleeping beside her away, but they stuck there, and mocked her.
"He is something to me, that bastard was right." She found herself thinking, but quickly erased that from her mind, Henry could read her mind again, she had to watch her thoughts. Henry began buttoning his shirt and clasping his suspenders, and he found himself admiring the images of Emelia sleeping that had been burned into his mind. He remembered her dream that he saw, "I am something to her, I have to be if she was dreaming that. I wish she knew what she means to me." He began thinking.
They began thinking of how foolish they were being, they've only known each other a few months, and for a few weeks they were away from each other and barely spoke. But they also longed to speak to and see each other during that period. They began thinking of the blissful feeling they got when they laid beside each other and cuddled up. They memorized the other's scent.
Henry's was a burnt wood, shoe polish, and pine scent. Emelia's was a sweet lilac, outdoorsy, rainy scent. Emelia had never felt this way, and it had been century's since Henry felt this way. They hardly knew what the feeling was. Love? Or just an admiration for a close friend?
Henry finished dressing and stepped from behind the divider and looked to Emelia, who was in the process of putting on her coat. She stopped trying with the dresses months ago, and decided funny looks were easier to deal with rather than ripping off a tear-away skirt to fight. Henry watched her with curiosity, he felt his heart quicken when she looked at him and smiled.
"Emelia" "Yeah?" "I have to say somethin-" He was cut off by the door swinging open, revealing Abe with his bag in one hand and a ridiculous hat in the other, "Come on you two! We have to catch the boat, I have to get back to Indiana, I have important things to do!" He shouted and began walking down the hall to the stairs. Emelia and Henry grabbed their bags and other belongings, and locked the room after them.
They walked briskly through the streets, Emelia felt uneasy when she didn't see any vampires. Henry, sensing her distress, grabbed her hand and gave it a light squeeze. Emelia's mind eased a little at the gesture, and they reached the boat in time for them to board.
Once they finally got off the boat, Abe was bidding them goodbye, "I have a few important matters to attend to, I will see you both soon, just send me a letter if you need help, or if you have someone you need me to find, alright?" He said, Emelia hugged him, and Henry shook his hand. "See you 'round Abe.." Emelia said and they watched him ride off somewhere.
"Maine?" Emelia asked as she turned to Henry, "What?" He asked, "Maine, you said when we got done with everything down there, we could go to Maine." She reminded him. "Ah, yes, you're right. Are you sure it won't bring back too many bad memories?" Henry asked, "Bad memories follow me wherever I go, Henry." She replied with a dark expression.
Henry placed a hand on her shoulder, "Let's get the horses, and we can start our new journey. Maybe kill a few vampires on the way, eh?" Emelia nodded with a small smile. They mounted their horses, Henry on his white horse, and Emelia on her black horse, Javert. They began riding.
After an hour of riding in silence, Emelia broke it. "You wanted to say something." She said, not as a question or statement, more as an observation. Henry gave her a questioning look, "Back at the hotel, in New Orleans. You wanted to say something until Abe came in." She stated. "Oh, right. That." He said quietly. He stopped his horse, and Emelia did the same.
She watched him with curious eyes as he found the right words. She thought about how his hair moved lightly as the breeze went by, she thought about how his eyes moved slowly and how he chewed at the inside of his cheek as he thought.
Henry heard her thoughts and it gave him the confidence he needed. "We've known each other for some time now, Emelia, and I uh, I began to notice your personality and beauty more and more when I got to know you." He started, Emelia began to blush. "I know we've been good friend for a long time now, and I'm very happy with that, don't get me wrong, but I just, I um...I-i um-" "Are you saying you have feeling for me, Sturges?" Emelia asked, a sly grin and cocked brow graced her features.
"Well I uh- I suppose I am.." Henry replied, he had never felt this helpless. "I like you too Henry, a lot, actually. I have for some time now, I suppose that's why we were fighting before you left for New York." She said. "I guess that's also why you got jealous of Abe when I hugged him and became friends with him." She added with a smirk.
Henry looked taken aback, "I was not jealous! I don't get jealous!" He said defensively, "Sure, Henry. I believe you!" She laughed, Henry felt himself smile when she laughed, and he joined her. "So, how about when we get to a town, we get some dinner, together?" Henry asked, "Henry, you can't eat.." Emelia reminded him. "No, but you have to, and then we can talk." He suggested, "We already know so much about each other, what's the point of 'courting'? We'll just be friends who are more than friends now." Emelia stated, Henry thought a moment.
"That's a much better idea.." He said, feeling stupid about his own. Emelia laughed again, and kicked her horse back into a trot, Henry following.
Some time had past, and they finally got halfway to Maine, when they found a small town with an Inn, and they rented a room. Two beds. They changed down to their pants and button up shirts, and laid in their separate beds. Nearly an hour past, with tossing and turning from both hunters.
"Emelia?" "Yeah?" "Could I...come sleep by you?" Henry asked awkwardly. "Please do, this feels weird now." Emelia said and moved over and helped Henry cover up with blankets. "Much better.." Emelia sighed, she closed her eyes for a moment and then looked at Henry. Their eyes locked.
Emelia felt her heart quicken when Henry leaned towards her, she felt her face redden, and so did Henry, though his heart couldn't actually beat. Their lips met in the middle, and they each felt an odd butterfly sensation in the pit of their stomachs. They pulled away after a couple minutes, and Emelia looked over Henry's face. He smiled at her, and she smiled back. "This is much better." She sighed, and moved closer to Henry, and closed her eyes.
Henry sighed and held her close. The words they had long left unspoken, were finally out there, and they couldn't have been happier. The words may not have been "I love you." But both were content with this, they knew of the feelings they harbored, and they shared the sweetest kiss. Emelia's first, and Henry's first that really meant something since Edeva.
They fell asleep soon after, content in each other's arms.
