CHAPTER 1 - New School, New Weirdos

My sister and I walked to the new school we were going to, Kamiyama High School. Supposedly we were born here in Tokyo, and we moved away to the US when we were very young. That explains why we know such a small amount of Japanese. "Everything is so pretty here, but I can't help but miss home." I said to my sister Honoka almost unconsciously.

"I miss home too, but-- it's not like we can go back. We can't run away, back to that old apartment. We'll be alright here, Setsuko." She was trying to comfort me, be the strong one, but I knew even through her reassuring smile she felt scared and confused just as I did.

"I guess..." I said as I sighed and looked to the ground while we walked silently. Even though I was just sad, I became easily distracted. "Well, now we go to a school with a dress code, and I like this outfit." I spun in a circle just to make the skirt fly out.

"I like it too." Honoka wasn't exactly talkative, but our conversations could last for hours. She and my cousin Hara are my best friends, even though Hara is far away in the US, I'll always make sure to keep in touch with her. "I love you," I reminded Honoka.

"I love you too," She smiled and gripped tighter onto my hand as we walked.

Finally, we made it inside of the school. There was just one small problem, we had no idea where we were. "Uhhhhhh... weren't we in class 2-B?" I asked my sister.

"Yes?" She was obviously confused as well.

Just then, a tall boy who had messy purple hair with two cyan streaks, thin yellow eyes, and a catlike smile walked up, then started speaking to us in Japanese, which only confused us more.

"We... we don't know where we are, and we don't know Japanese either!" I blurted out in a panic.

"Ah, I'm sorry. What class are you both in?" The strange boy tilted his head slightly at us.

"2-B?" I replied, with an unsure tone in my voice.

"Oh? That's my class as well, I'll show you both there." He led us there, Honoka and I glancing at eachother from time to time while we walked behind him. "What are your names?" He asked out of nowhere.

I jerked up in surprise, "You broke the silence, the silence is broken!" I yelped. That's something Honoka and I said when silence was broken in such a manner. It had turned from a joke to a habit, and I had terrible control over my mouth, unlike my sister.

He giggled quietly. I must have made a fool of myself. "It's alright. I won't force you to tell me."

He had gotten the wrong idea, it wasn't that I had crippling shyness, it was that he startled me. "My name is Setsuko, and this is my twin sister, her name is Honoka." I said to him confidently, as if trying to prove I wasn't terribly shy.

"Those are pretty names. I'm Rui, nice to meet you." I could tell he was smiling even though he had his back facing us. "This is class 2-B." Rui said as he came to a stop and opened the door for us.

Fortunately for us, the teacher spoke both Japanese and English. "I'd like you two to introduce yourselves." she asked of my sister and I.

"I am Honoka Ito..." She said, eyes looking down.

"I'm Setsuko Ito, I like to consider myself a writer--" Honoka nudged into my side with her elbow, which meant I needed to stop telling the class my life story.

The teacher looked almost as if she was glad Honoka shut me up. "You can sit over there, next to eachother if you wish, but if I catch you talking I'm going to have to separate you." She motioned to the two empty desks behind Rui.

We nodded, and sat in the desks next to eachother. I looked about the classroom curiously, almost tuning out the teacher, it was a horrible habit of mine.

"Pay attention, Setsuko." Honoka whispered at me, with a disappointed expression. She had noticed my focus was not on what was being taught.

I did focus for a time, but my mind always seemed to wander off somewhere and create scenarios with amusing dialogues. I would whisper the funny dialogue to myself and laugh, which made me look like a weirdo. But I noticed Rui doing almost the exact same thing. Before I knew it, it was already lunchtime.

I sat alone with my sister, until Rui walked up with a short girl who had purple eyes, long grayish-green hair with the front strands tied at the ends. "These are the new students I told you about, Nene. Setsuko and Honoka." Rui motioned to us when he said our names.

"Hello," Nene greeted us quietly while she played with her fingers nervously.

Rui sat down next to me, and Nene on the spot next to him. "Where are you both from? It's clear that it's not here." He just kept smiling, it was like he was always smiling.

"San Fransisco" I replied without thought.

"That's in California, isn't it?" Rui seemed interested in learning about where we were from.

Then my mind started playing California Girls, and I couldn't help but quietly sing it.

Honoka started to giggle, "Yes, it's in California." she answered him for me. She answered all of Rui's questions for me since I had zoned out while I ate my sandwich.

I noticed Rui hadn't even taken a bite of his sandwich once I snapped back to reality, "Are you going to eat? You're not hungry?" His not eating made me mildly concerned.

"Oh, it's a veggie sandwich. I don't like vegtables." Rui replied while looking down at said sandwich. "Will you trade your unhealthy, half-eaten, peanut butter jelly sandwich to me for my very nutritious veggie sandwich?" He held it out to me with a silly smirk on his face.

Honoka narrowed her eyes at him, then she looked to me. "He's scamming you, Setsuko." She whispered in my ear.

Ignoring her, I accepted Rui's offer even though I disliked vegtables myself. "Hand it over." I ordered as I returned to him the same silly smirk.

He did so, and took my sandwich from my hands, immediately taking a bite from it.

"Ew..." Nene and Honoka both muttered in disgust while they watched Rui eat my lunch.

I inspected his veggie sandwich, and hesitantly took a bite. "It's no wonder you didn't want to eat this, it's repulsive..." It was almost sickening, but only because the reputation vegtables had in my mind. In reality, it wasn't all that terrible.

"I try to avoid vegtables any way I can. It seems like they're bad for your health based off how they taste." He laughed, then started asking questions again. "You enjoy writing?"

"Yes, although I'm not very confident in my stories." I could never bring myself to show any of my writing to my parents. It's not that it was anything bad, it just seemed like they would think it's strange. "What do you like doing?" I quickly changed the subject. Maybe I did love to talk about my stories, but not to just anybody.

"My friends and I, we put on shows in the theme park Phoenix Wonderland." It seemed that he was going to say more, but I hadn't realized it yet and cut him off.

"You put on shows, like plays? Are they musicals? Do you sing and dance?" I questioned, words rolling off my tounge, flying out of my mouth and into the air.

"Hehe, yes." Rui smiled wider.

This newfound information was very exciting to me, "I'd love to watch you practice!! I wish I did interesting things like that in my free time. All I do is sit upstairs in my room, I don't ever come down. Ever since we moved... I didn't do that before." When I finished those last two sentences, my head was filled with thoughts. Thoughts asking why I kept telling him everything, why I always told everybody everything. I couldn't answer them, because I didn't know the answer. I'm sure you know how tiresome it is when nothing makes sense. How frustrating it is to never know why, to always ask questions and never get answers.

"You may watch us rehearse, I can take you and Honoka to the park to watch us after school." Rui said with that seemingly long smile of his.

"Setsuko," I was too busy giggling out of happiness to notice Honoka calling my name. She stabbed into my arm with her elbow, "Setsuko!" she whispered almost angrily.

I quickly turned my head, "Hm?"

Honoka spoke in whispers, "You need to remember that Mom wants us to come home so she knows we're alright before we run off with our friends."

"Fine, yeah." I whispered back, exasperated. Why did Honoka always hit me to get my attention?
