Chapter VI

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and Sarah was cutting the lawn with her scythe, while Thancred watered the flowers.

Melody was sitting on the porch, watching them. Suddenly and without warning, she felt a presence behind her, and turned her head only to see Fandaniel standing over her with a little smirk on his face.

Fandaniel seemed very happy to see her. "Hello, miss!" he said with the cutest little smile in the world.

"Oh, hi Fandaniel." Melody went right back to watching Thancred and Sarah, trying her best to ignore him.

Sarah paused in her scythe-swinging for a moment. She leaned on the handle of the well-worn weapon, snickering with laughter as she observed Thancred. "Thancred Waters flowers."

Thancred chuckled quietly to himself, still preoccupied watering said flowers.

Whilst this was happening, Fandaniel had seated himself next to Melody and was watching her closely, consequently making her rather nervous.

Just then, an Au Ra woman walked by and stopped to look at Fandaniel. A big smile spread across her face and she gasped, "That's Fandaniel! The man who tried to start the Final Days!" She bit her bottom lip while she smiled. A Raen, the woman had eyes of amber, short hair that was light red fading into blonde, and tanned skin. She was quite short, and Melody thought her face was a bit ugly.

Fandaniel spared barely a glance for the Au Ra woman; her short skimpy white dress not impressing him. So he proceeded to stare adoringly at Melody.

Melody saw an opportunity, so she took it. She got up and walked over to the Au Ra lady. "Hey, you like Fandaniel? Well he likes me and I don't like him, so you can have him." she told her quietly.

"Really?! Oh, do you mean it?!" She squealed with joy and her spiky tail perked up.

"Yes, yes, I really mean it." Melody replied in all seriousness. She then called Fandaniel over. "Fandaniel, c'mere."

Fandaniel walked over, oblivious to their plans. "What is it, miss?"

The Au Ra grabbed Fandaniel by the arm and ran. "Thank you!!" she shouted over to Melody.

Fandaniel's expression was one of shock and betrayal. He looked almost like a rag doll, being unwillingly dragged away so. Melody felt remorse somewhere inside her heart, but now he wasn't her problem.

It was now that Thancred finished watering the flowers, and finally realized Sarah had been cutting the lawn with her scythe this entire time. "Sarah, why are you cutting the lawn with your scythe?" He sounded slightly disappointed in her.

Sarah stopped and stared at him like he was a weirdo. "What else would I cut it with? My rapier? My gun?"

Before Thancred could say it, Melody did. "Maybe a lawnmower? I don't know, just an educated guess."

There was a short pause, after which Sarah simply replied with "No." She then continued to slice the grass meticulously, bit by bit, with the scythe.

Thancred facepalmed and went inside of the house.

After a few minutes, Alisaie walked outside with three glasses of lemonade. She saw Sarah and Melody sprawled on the lawn, gazing at the sky, and joined them.

"Hi Alisaie," Melody greeted her smilingly, still looking to the sky.

It almost seemed as though Sarah didn't notice Alisaie's approach, for she was far too busy being amazed by a cloud. "That cloud looks like... Thancred." In reality, the cloud looked nothing like Thancred, it looked like a cloud.

Alisaie set the glasses on the newly-cut grass and sat down with her knees to her chest. "What have you both been up to?" she asked.

"I got rid of Fandaniel, Sarah was cutting the lawn with her scythe, and Thancred was--" Melody started to giggle to herself, "Thancred Waters flowers."

"However did you get rid of him?"

Melody shifted from her back to her side so she could look at Alisaie better. "Well, I gave him to an Au Ra lady; she seemed to like him a lot. Although I don't think Fandaniel likes her at all." She grabbed one of the glasses of lemonade, sat up and took a sip.

Alisaie watched Melody as she drank the lemonade. "Is the lemonade good? I think I may have put a bit too much sugar..."

"Oh no, I think it might be the best lemonade I've ever had. But I can't help but remember this one time..." Melody trailed off and got lost in thought.

"What one time? Elaborate." Sarah demanded of her.

"Well, when me and Nanashi were younger, I believe I was 10 and he 12. But he tried making us lemonade, right? But he didn't put any sugar in it, so it was repulsive. We didn't want to drink it, so we decided to sell it to people in the markets, little did they know there was no sugar in it. They were buying some of the most disgusting lemonade on the face of this star." Melody burst into laughter, but the amusement in her eyes soon faded. "I miss Nanashi."

Sarah raised one eyebrow. "Who's this Nanashi guy you keep talking about. Were you orphan siblings or something?" She obviously didn't remember how Melody had mentioned he was her friend.

Melody shook her head. "No, but we're both orphans. Well, I guess I'm not quite an orphan, I'm just very very lost."

"How did you get so lost, anyways?"

"When I was 9, I went to the markets with my mother, and I wandered off. I actually danced right into him. He was attempting to steal some kind of food, I don't fully remember what. Anyways, I didn't understand the meaning of stranger danger, so I began to speak with him and he told me about how he's an orphan. Then he asked me where my parents were; realizing I had no idea, I burst into tears, like any little girl would in that situation. We stayed with each other almost as if we were siblings. He's the reason I'm still alive today." When Melody had finally finished her speech about Nanashi, she took another sip from her glass of lemonade.

"Alright then." Sarah picked up her glass and consumed the cold beverage aggressively.

"So you never found your mother?" Alisaie held her glass with both hands.

"Nope." Melody looked quite sad thinking about this. "She was nice, though she had a short temper."

"Smooth noodles are sad." Sarah remarked out of nowhere. She was still staring at the cloud she thought looked like Thancred, though it had shifted and deformed itself quite drastically by this point.

"Smooth noodles?" Melody was quite perplexed.

"You know, smooth noodles, penne noodles, whatever you call them."

Alisaie laughed; she thought smooth noodles was a very funny joke.

"I'm glad he's gone, but I kind of feel bad for him..." Melody sighed. At this point everybody was simply speaking their mind.

Sarah was very confused. She now knew how it felt to be the one who only heard a small part of the thought process. "Who's gone?"

"Fandaniel." Melody replied, and suddenly she heard a cry of devastation in the distance. It sounded much like the Au Ra woman she'd given Fandaniel to.

"You called?" It was Fandaniel. He was back and standing behind Melody with that little smile still on his face.

Melody jerked back in shock. "How did you--" She stopped, forced a smile onto her face, and began her sentence again. "Why yes, I did call; I'd like a hug." It was the only thing she could think of right then, and she needed an excuse pronto.

He sat on his knees close next to her and hugged her tightly, still smiling.

There was a look of pure and unfiltered disgust on Sarah's face. "Come on, I thought you got rid of him!" she exclaimed, annoyed.

"I would never get rid of Fandaniel! That lady just grabbed him and ran; I didn't tell her she could have him." Melody denied swiftly.

Alphinaud was walking outside at this unfortunate moment, and he just so happened to overhear Melody's statement about how she'd never get rid of Fandaniel. It disappointed him greatly, and he felt almost degraded by the assumed fact that she liked Fandaniel instead of him. Although, in truth, she did not love Fandaniel. She hardly knew him. So he went back inside the house to wallow in misery.

Melody had the idea to test how much Fandaniel would do for her. "Could you bring me to the couch?" A simple request. Although she could just stand up, go inside, and sit on the couch herself.

"Yes, of course." He obliged willingly, picking her up and walking inside the house to gently sit Melody down on the couch.

Alisaie was shocked, but she decided to change the topic before Sarah could start ranting about how she wished Fandaniel would leave for like the eighteenth time that week. "Why not we all go to your library, Sarah?"

"That sounds like a nice idea." Sarah stood up and put her hands on her hips. "But you know what isn't nice? Fandaniel's existence in my house!" She and Alisaie then walked into the house and upstairs to the library where Thancred was.

Melody sat thinking while Fandaniel settled close next to her with one of his arms around her. A smirk spread across her face. "Could you swap me and Sarah's bodies? I'd like to know what it's like being a Sarah Sunshine." She was sure he wouldn't fulfil this request, as it wasn't even possible.

"Your wish is my command!" agreed Fandaniel, and everything faded to black.
