15 - So You Like a Girl?
Rue woke up with a start, breathing heavily. For a second, she actually thought she was drowning. The woman was in a puddle of sweat, and quickly realized Suzu and Eliza weren't in bed with her. "Ow!" The silly babies were kicking around. To be honest, they didn't give her much trouble in there.
The sound of Eliza, Suzu, and even Dazai could be heard. It seemed as though they were making breakfast. Well, at least the girls were...
Rue's chest felt heavy as she put herself into her copper dress, trying to rationalize keeping Dazai around. "He hasn't caused too much trouble yet... right? It will be alright." Foolish words.
"Ah! Rue-chan." Dazai smirked as she walked into the dining room. "Good morning!" He smiled almost innocently now, like he didn't have a care in the world.
Rue thought he was very cute, too cute. How could this guy possibly have been a mafioso? Her good judgement was really clouded by his amusing behavior and good looks. "Good morning, Osamu." She smiled back, sitting down next to him.
Suzu and Eliza had made waffles, and set the plates of food down on the table. "Wonderful waffles!" Suzu said dramatically, a proud grin on her face.
Last night's events were forgotten, and everyone got along alright.
Suzu seemed in a good mood, and it only got better when her sister said she could come to the ADA with her and Dazai. "Oh?" She started blushing, but her extra personality couldn't help but shine through her sudden shyness. "It will surely be splendid to meet the people you've been around." She decided to give them a chance, maybe they weren't completely weird.
"Mm, exactly." Rue said as she got more waffles, smiling. After she finished eating, she started throwing up. That happened sometimes... even before she was pregnant. She just stuffed herself to the brim, it was really bad.
Eliza rubbed her back, trying to calm her down. "You should stay home."
Rue wiped her mouth with her hand, feeling disgusted by herself. "Yeah..." She agreed, weakly walking over to the couch to sit down.
Dazai walked up to her, having an idea. "Hey, I can bring Suzu to work with me." He said gently, putting his hand on Rue's shoulder. "Stay here and rest, we'll be good."
Suzu seemed reluctant, but agreed anyway. She wanted to see Atsushi again. "Yes."
Eliza narrowed her eyes at Dazai. "Don't get into any sort of trouble, or I will hit you with my broom." She was serious about that threat.
Rue was a little envious of the fact her sister got to spend time with Dazai and she didn't but nodded anyway. "Ah, go ahead. Make sure to be safe."
And so, the two of them left.
Rue sighed. "Perhaps I'll just play with the rats." She said, resignation in her voice.
Eliza grinned, finishing cleaning up Rue's mess and going to round up her pets.
-
"Suzu, that's your name, right?" Dazai asked as he drove.
Suzu held onto her seat, nervous from his reckless driving. "Yes...!" She confirmed.
"Ah, Rue-chan brags about you a lot. One time she told me you were a stage actress." He made a hard stop at a red light
Suzu jerked forward, her shorter curly hair getting a little messed up. "Oh. I am! Only the best!!" She said after regaining her composure, forgetting about holding on for dear life for a moment.
"I might come to see you perform." He said, remembering the tickets Rue gave him. "Your big sister gave me tickets." He almost suddenly began driving again, going way too fast.
Suzu was quite startled. "Ah!"
Eventually they arrived, and Dazai helped Suzu get out of the car.
"Come on, we're here." He grinned, looking silly as ever.
Suzu stepped out, fixing her hair.
They walked into the building, the two of them making somewhat of a seen.
"I am Suzu Suzuki, you may have heard of me! I'm Rue's sister. It's a pleasure to meet you all!!" She greeted, her introduction overdramatic, some might say.
Dazai nodded, like he was backing her up. "Rue-chan couldn't come today, because she's sick."
Kunikida was unamused by the situation. "Why are you bringing her whole family here?!"
"The little lady wanted to meet us!" Dazai defended, hands in the pockets of his coat. "Anyway, Rue-chan would be mad if I said she couldn't come. Wouldn't want to upset my girlfriend!" As if he hadn't upset her many times already...
"But-- they don't work here!" Kunikida insisted.
Dazai shrugged, going over to the couch to slack off.
Kunikida stood from his desk. "HEY!! DON'T USE THIS AS AN EXCUSE TO BE LAZY!!!" He made his way over to Dazai, ready to hit the other man.
"Gotta entertain the guest, yep." Dazai wasn't doing any entertaining... unless you thought him getting beat was entertaining.
Kunikida slapped him multiple times. "Get up! Do your job."
Suzu gazed at the two men, before looking for Atsushi. There she saw the boy, staring right at her.
"Ah!" His face turned red, and he looked back at his work.
Suzu looked down at her feet, then walked over to the couch, and sat there until it was lunchtime, observing everyone go about their business. She didn't want to cause any disturbance...
When it finally was that time, they went down to the Uzumaki cafe that was on the first floor of the building. Dazai got Suzu her meal, saying it was "No problem." Boy, was he lying... but that's for later.
Atsushi went up to Dazai, his steps hesitant. "Dazai..." He called, before sitting down next to him.
"Hm?" Dazai perked up, looking at the young man.
He played with his fingers, before speaking quietly. "How would I get a girl to like me?" He blurted out.
Dazai smirked, then laughed. "You like a girl? Who?" He asked, moving his face closer and being all nosy. He wasn't stupid, he knew that obviously meant he had a crush on someone.
Atsushi's face turned pink, and he stumbled over his words. "U-um... that doesn't matter."
To Dazai, it did matter. "No, no, no, don't be shy. Tell me! Tell me! How about this, you tell me who it is, and I'll tell you how to make her like you. In fact, this could make every girl in the world swoon over you!" He insisted, snickering.
"B-but--!"
"No buts. If there is a but I won't tell you." He teased, trying to break Atsushi so he would spill the beans.
"Fine!!" He said, before sitting very quietly trying his hardest to get over the embarrassment of it all. "Uhhhhhhhh..." The boy moved closer, whispering. "The-- that girl."
"Which one?" Dazai held back his laughter, so that Atsushi would continue to speak.
He stayed silent for what felt like forever, until he spoke again. "S... someone." He knew Dazai would make fun of him, he could feel it.
Dazai wiggled his eyebrows. "But the question is... who is that someone?" He was actually having a bit of fun with this back and forth.
"Suzu..." Atsushi said it so quietly, Dazai couldn't hear.
Dazai stared at Atsushi for a second. "What was that?"
Atsushi wanted to melt into the floor. "Suzu." He said it a little louder this time, blushing more.
"Ohhhhh..." Dazai nodded, a teasing smile on his face. "Suzu, you like her? Why?"
Atsushi was caught off guard by the question, and made a slightly irritated face. "You said you would tell me how to make her like me after I told you who it was..."
"That's right, yeah. I did say that." Dazai sighed. "Okay, listen up, Atsushi. You will become the most charismatic young man there ever was after you do these simple things. First of all, you need to actually talk to her. Yes, shocking, I know! You'll have to be strong and do it, I believe in you." He put his hand on Atsushi's shoulder, being dramatic simply to fluster him. "Then, you'll need to have these three things: A smile, some kindness, and open-mindedness. Boom!" He clapped his hands once in the young man's face.
Atsushi jumped back. Dazai's exaggerated words made him feel somewhat stupid. "But there's always a possibility she might see me for what I really am, garbage!!--"
Dazai cut him off. "Oh, there's something else I forgot. It would help to be yourself. I don't think you'd be good at acting cool."
Atsushi side-eyed him. "She probably wouldn't like me anyway, she's far too special for someone like me. A stage actress... that sounds amazing!"
"You're likable. Just go. You could talk to her right now to get her number for later." Dazai said, resting his chin on his hand.
Suzu was seen talking to Kenji, getting along with him well. "Oh, how interesting! What was it like growing up on a farm in the country?"
"Well, there was no electricity, and everyone knew everyone. We all got along, it was fun! I like it here too, it's a new experience." Kenji replied, that cheerful smile on his face.
Suzu nodded, intrigued. "Well, that sounds absolutely stellar!"
"Do you like cows?" Kenji asked, his eyes wide.
Suzu paused, before answering. "I think baby cows are cute."
Kenji seemed to like that reply. "I love cows! Raising them, working with them, even eating them is great! They're really tasty." He grinned, overjoyed from talking about cows.
"That sounds lovely. Beef is really delicious." Suzu played with her curls as she spoke.
Atsushi observed from afar.
Dazai got tired of Atsushi being shy, so he grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pushed him into Suzu with a cheeky grin. "Oopsies--!"
Suzu shrieked, falling to the floor.
Atsushi landed on top of her, then hastily scrambled off of her. "S-s-sorry!! I'm really sorry about that!!!"
Both of their faces were red as they stared at one another on the wood floor. Kenji watched curiously, while Dazai had a big smirk on his face.
"It's okay!" Suzu smiled, attempting to look normal. She stood up, then helped Atsushi get up.
Atsushi returned her smile, brushing himself off. "Um, there was something I wanted to ask you... could I have your number? I-if that's okay with you, y'know?!!" He requested, his voice trembling.
"Yes." Suzu agreed without hesitation. She pulled out her phone, giving him her number.
Just then, the waitress came up. "Sir, are you going to pay your tab this time around?" She questioned politely.
"Ah, hello lovely." Dazai said. "Once again, I'll ask you... would you like to participate in a double suicide with me?"
The waitress blinked at him, then laughed. "Do that yourself."
"Oh, no, no, I couldn't. I need a beautiful woman such as yourself to commit a double suicide with me." He took her hand in his, admiring it. "You have really pretty hands."
The waitress was unfazed. "Will you pay your tab?"
Meanwhile, Rue was eating food for fun, sharing some of it with the rats. All of a sudden, she stopped, staying still as a statue. "Something is wrong."
Eliza looked confused. "Hm?"
Rue took out her phone, calling Dazai. "Osamu!!! Are you alright?" She screamed through the phone in a panic.
Dazai had her on speaker, and moved the phone father away from him. "Hey there, Rue-chan. Everything is fine." He reassured.
"Please pay your tab, sir." The waitress said again.
Rue perked up, a strong feeling of jealousy at the new woman's voice. "Who's that?!" She barked.
"That's the waitress, Rue-chan." Dazai sighed.
"What are you doing?!!?" Rue yelled, angry now.
The waitress came closer to the phone. "He should be paying his tab."
"You're a worthless man! Pay the god**** tab!!" Rue was hurling more insults he deserved at Dazai, but then he started talking over her.
"Yes, Rue-chan. Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! I'm paaaaayyyinggg!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaitt!!" He hung up on her, looking back to the waitress. "Just put what I bought today on my tab." He said casually.
The waitress walked away. "Alright."
Suzu and Atsushi were too busy having small talk with one another to even notice the scene Dazai made, and Kenji didn't realize it either. That boy was too happy to be the third wheeler.
"Soon, I will perform!" Suzu posed. "I shall invite you, I can give you one of the few tickets I have!" She exclaimed proudly.
Atsushi nodded. "That sounds nice."
