Chapter 19

"Impossible!" My jaw drops open as I reread the results of Sophie's x-ray test.

"Impossible!" I repeat, my pulse racing in my chest as I hastily gather up the tests in my hand and dash for the door.
Just then, my phone vibrates in my lab coat pocket and I pull it out not bothering to even check the caller ID before answering it.

"Hello?" I blurt in an uneasy tone as I try to work the handle of the door without dropping the tests in my hand.

"How are you dear?" I immediately pin it  to be Clave's voice and bite my lower lip  trying to keep myself from groaning out loud in frustration because that would just sound rude.

Not the right time Clave.

"Hi." I try to sound chirpy to cover the  displeasure I'm currently feeling at his calling me now.

"Are you free this weekend?"

I consider saying no but that would be lying, not that I can't lie but what if he shows up at my house or something like that?

That would be ugly, I assure myself.

"Yes." I squeeze my eyes and open it again, something I do sometimes when I'm pissed. I press the phone harder to my ear and support it with my shoulder, freeing my hands to hold the reports steadily.

"So do you mind hanging out?" He says in a husky voice which I assume he thinks is cool because one moment he's talking fine and the next, he just goes all husky especially when he's trying to ask me out or something.
Also, I know for a fact, he doesn't have a sore throat because sore throats don't just go on and off.
I really consider saying no because, this is actually one of the rare weekends I spend at home and as most people probably know, a doctor's work is never done so I can be called up anytime at the hospital.

But apart from that, I'm just gonna spend most of the weekend sleeping and working on my laptop when I'm not checking on mom. I also know that if I wriggle out of this one, he'll almost never stop asking me so I just agree.

"No, I don't mind hanging out Clave." I hurriedly puff a stray strand of my hair away from my face as I make my way down the crowded hallway to the lab.

"Great; Sunday?" He asks obviously excited he's finally gotten me to say yes and I scoff silently.

"Alright, Sunday." I second and push open the lab door, dropping the reports on the first table I sight when I enter.

The radiologist, Mr. Lee looks up from his microscope immediately I enter and I motion for him to hold on, so I can finish my call. "Okay bye now, I'm really busy so talk to you later." I hastily add and don't wait for his answer because I immediately hang up. I shove my phone in the pocket of my lab coat and return my attention to Mr. Lee.

"Mr. Lee did you see this?" I grab one of the x-ray results and hold it out to him.

"What is it?" He immediately leaves what he was previously working on and strides over to me, taking the results and examining them. Shortly after, he looks back up at me, a knowing look on his face.

"Sophie Blake." He sighs in more of a statement than a question.

"How is that possible?" I forcefully poke the results in his hand and look him in the eye.

"I do not know Miss. I was surprised too but decided just to let you take a look at it first before I said anything." He shrugs and hands me back the results.

For a few moments, I just stare at them wondering what to make of it.

"This is impossible. The tumor had already spread to the midsection of her brain-too much to see the brain stem. How come the brain stem is visible in this report?" I indicate, my voice barely coming out in a whisper.

"I do not know Miss." He repeats obviously as confused as I.

"Run another scan on her-immediately!"
I demand and dash out of the lab to the emergency ward with him following suit.

                          ※※

I run my hand through my hair in shock as my eyes dart from the results in my hand to Mr. Lee and back to the results again.

Once we left the lab, Mr. Lee ran another scan on Sophie and the results came out the same.

The malignant tumor that had spread almost to the midsection of her brain had greatly decreased such that the brain stem was now visible.
This means that surgery is now possible whereas it wasn't before.
Any attempt of surgery before now could actually kill Sophie because the tumor was so much that you couldn't even see what you were doing.
Any vein could be cut, any artery cut, any nerve cut which could cause her to probably bleed to death or have a seizure and one wouldn't know how to rectify the situation.

"The surgery....."

"It is now possible." I complete his sentence and slowly begin clapping my hands excitedly and practically skip out of the room while calling behind me to Mr. Lee, "Quick-get Veronica and Derek. We need to call the Blakes now!"

"Right away Miss." I barely hear him because I'm already halfway down the corridor.

There is a knock on the door and I look up from my laptop.

"Come in." I call out and Mr. Blake walks in followed by his petite wife.
She's always looked so fragile on the outside with her blonde hair constantly done up in the neatest styles and her white attire always spotless- but during the time she spent praying for her child at the hospital, I saw a totally  different side of her.
She was so strong and determined, never  giving up on her daughter who she was told would die. Since then, I stopped seeing her as weak; there is now this respect I have for her.
This time she is wearing a white flannel top decorated along the front with little printed flowers of white, baby pink, red and gold on top of a white pencil skirt with a little slit at the front. Her nude heels and makeup marry the look well making her resemble a perfect little Barbie doll.

They both take their seats in front of me and I rise up a little to take Mr. Blake's hand in a firm handshake.

"We ran another scan on Sophie like you requested and this is what we saw." I note and pull out the results from my desk drawer handing it to them.

There is silence in the room for a few seconds as they both study the report silently and slowly but surely, Mrs. Blake's pale tiny hands that were just holding the paper lightly a moment ago, grip it tightly and her body begins to tremble slightly.

I figure that she has already gotten the message as she raises her head and our eyes meet; hers holding a world of emotions clamouring for expression.

Her husband on the other hand is still frowning over the results obviously confused and still trying to decipher what it all might mean.

I then break eye contact with Mrs. Blake and clear my throat drawing Mr. Blake's attention to me.

"The scan showed that the tumor had decreased greatly by about 50%." I pause and search their faces before I continue. "This means that the parts of her brain that needed to be visible before any surgery took place are now visible." At those words, Mrs. Blake's pale blue eyes begin to water and she turns to her husband who is equally trying to contain his emotions.
They grip each other's hands and Mr. Blake pulls his wife into his arms as they both begin to sob.
Mrs. Blake slides off the chair down to her knees on the ground tugging her husband down with her because of the position they were previously in.

I smile as I seat in my chair watching them.

They never gave up; even when they were told to go home, they never did. Everyone thought they were stupid when they asked that their daughter be scanned again but they stayed put never wavering. What kind of people are these?
Where do they come from? How did they know their daughter would live?

Oh, that beautiful little girl has her life back now.

A large lump begins to form in my throat and I bite hard on my lower lip to try and hold in the sob that is fast making it's way up my throat but unfortunately, it escapes, interrupting the beautiful scene before me.

At the sudden sound from me, both their heads whip in my direction.

"I'm really sorry." I blurt apologetically pushing back my chair and standing up to leave. "I think I should......"

"Come here." I stop short, staring at Mrs. Blake who is smiling with her hand stretched out beckoning me to come.

"What?"

"It's alright, we don't mind." I turn to Mr. Blake who is nodding and smiling.

It seems like my legs have a mind of their own as I find myself walking to where they're knelt huddled on the floor and kneeling down beside them.

They then wrap their arms around me and we all cry together.

With tears in my eyes, I look up toward heaven and shake my head, laughing silently.

You did it didn't you?
