The Day with the Inevitable Coming Out
Usually Sirius and Remus were gone by the time I left, since James had discovered their secret flat, it was like they were dangling it in his face, to see if he could figure it out on his own. Sadly, James was highly oblivious to what was really going on, maybe because he'd never even considered it a possibility. Of course they chose the day I was starting to assemble my Glenn binder, which I hastily had to jam closed, stuffing it into one of the drawers.
"Hey Lily," Remus said, his fingers loosely intertwined with Sirius's, "What are you working on?"
That was all he had said so far but there was something in their eyes and I could tell what they were going to say: they were telling James. Slowly, I swivelled around, trying to completely detach myself from all thoughts of Glenn that had been floating around my head.
"Nothing," I replied, "You two are still here? I thought you vanished at the crack of dawn only to reappear late at night."
"I know," Sirius replied stiffly, "We're here because we want to talk to you - "
"You're going to tell him aren't you?" I asked, a small smile on my lips. The two of them didn't say a word but they didn't need to.
Eventually Remus managed to form a sentence, "I... I thought you could tell - "
"And we're telling him something even harder," Sirius said, looking down at the floor gravely, "We're moving out."
The coming out I wasn't shocked about but this was a surprise. Remus looked relatively optimistic but to Sirius, it was as if the weight of the world were on his shoulders, his eyes full of shame and sadness. I wasn't sure why, perhaps it was the guilt of lying to James, who although he was oblivious knew there was something we were in on and he wasn't.
"Oh," I replied softly, "When did you decide this?"
"When you and Prongs went to see the house," Remus admitted, "It just made us think that... you two are married and we're .... "
He glanced at Sirius who stayed silent for a few moments before finishing his sentence, "Together. Me and Remus aren't just messing around, we're... together and we're just as real a couple as you and Prongs."
"I know," I replied, keeping my voice soft and comforting, "I know that."
Sirius gave me a forced smile, "Yeah, I know you know, I was... never mind."
"And it made us think that we don't want to sneak around, stealing moments in a tiny studio apartment," Remus explained, looking over at Sirius, "Sirius really inherited a large amount of money and we want to move, it's time. The last few years have been wonderful - "
"Have they?" I laughed, "Because it feels like it's just been Order meetings and deaths."
"But our time here has been nice," He replied, "Living with you two but we need to move. We want to move and we don't want to lie to Prongs when we do it."
"When are you telling him?"
"Today," Sirius replied, "We thought you'd help us... we're asking you to help us. Get him in a good mood, get him to make pancakes, shag him, anything so he'll be happy."
"I'm sure he'll understand," I replied, "He's very understanding, I mean I'm a muggleborn and he never showed me the slightest bit of prejudice."
"Yes, because he was raised that way," Sirius replied, "I mean Fleamont was surprisingly accepting given when he grew up but Euphemia wasn't so accepting of us. I loved her like a mother to me, don't get me wrong but she would say things. Never explicitly but you could tell she thought it was wrong and Prongs was always a bit of a mummy's boy growing up so I just worry that he'll ... reject me."
"He seemed very accepting when I told him about Andy Warhol, we had a nice discussion - " Remus began but Sirius shook his head.
"That's different, hypothetical. It's easy enough to say things but when it's me, he might not see it that way. It's like with me, I say I want to help the people who follow you-know-who's mind-set but when I see them.... I attack on sight."
"Sirius, that's not the same," I replied but he shook his head.
"I know, but ... just please help us, Lily? Please?"
I nodded my head quickly, I would have volunteered had they not asked me, "Of course I'll help you - "
"With what?" The three of spun on our heels as James's voice seemed to appear out of nowhere as he began to walk down the stairs, yawning slightly and giving us a sleepy smile, "Help with what?"
"Breakfast," Remus said quickly.
"Breakfast?" He gave a shrug, "I can make pancakes..."
"I mean if you're offering we won't say no," Sirius said, the grave look on his face completely gone. James's eyes lit up, he was unashamedly in love with pancake making. Seeing him flip the pancakes in the pan, a giddy smile on his face, had more than once cheered my up when my minds turned to my revenge plan against Glenn. Despite everything he looked so happy and we needed that kind of happiness to achieve the best results.
"Oh, yeah, I'll do it," He replied nonchalantly, "No problem, it's one of those breakfasts that's better to make than eat."
"I don't know," I replied, "You make them amazingly well."
"Would disagree with you but when you're right, you're right," He replied, walking into the kitchen. I waited a few moments until he was gone before whispering to the other two:
"Figure out what you're going to say to him," I replied, "I'll make him happy as he can be. Besides, it will be nice to have a day of happiness, so this works just as well for me as it does for you."
Remus mouthed thank you and the two them walked up the stairs, purposefully keeping several steps apart which only made them look more suspicious. I made my way into the kitchen, wrapping my arms around James's waist.
"Morning, Pot-man."
"Pot-man?" He gave a small laugh, "Haven't heard that name in years. Good morning to you too, Pot-girl or should I say Prongsette. Or was it Head-girl-friend? Or was it Lilypad... not Lilypad."
"I think it was all of them," I replied, "Although Mrs Potter is my favourite."
"Hardly a nickname," He replied, preparing the batter, "But I agree, it rolls nicely on the tongue."
"Sorry, am I hindering your pancake making skills?" I asked.
"Not at all," He replied, "I could do this in my sleep at this point. You stay right where you are, I'll be fine."
As it turned out, I did need to move later on for the flipping but that way I got a better view of his face so it was worth it. Eventually the pancakes were done and he admired them proudly.
"Well, James, that may be your best batch yet," I said with a grin.
"You're in a good mood today," He laughed. I thought that I would have felt constantly pressured to keep him happy due to the stakes but everything had put me in a genuine good mood, I wouldn't have to pretend after all. Even though at the back of my mind, I still had the nagging feeling that I should be focusing on Glenn, avenging the death of my friend that I cried over in the dark, but right now I deserved a day off before everything became too serious.
"Shall I go and get Moony and Padfoot?" James asked and I shrugged.
"Think they're discussing something," I replied, "Maybe best to leave it for now, you could put it outside their door though."
"Oh, okay," He replied, suddenly growing a little concerned, "I could just go and knock..."
"Maybe," I said, my heart sinking as his face fell, "I say just call them down and if they don't, then leave it outside their door."
Much to my surprise, the two did come down, smiles on their faces as if they weren't about to handle one of the biggest tasks this year. For the first time in weeks, we ate together, none of us plagues by Order missions or midnight sneaking out or saving friends. Even though it hadn't been a nice few years objectively, I knew that once Remus and Sirius moved out, this would be what I remembered, the rose tinted goggles making me forget everything else.
However, after breakfast, the two of them disappeared back into Remus's room, mumbling unconvincing excuses that made James's smile fade a little.
"They're gone again," He said softly, "Still here but gone again."
"We could go to," I replied.
"What? Out of here?"
"I meant to our room," I replied, "Two can play at that game but if you wanted to get out, we could do that too."
"That sounds good too," He replied, the smile returning to his face although there was still a sadness behind his eyes which I hoped would be somewhat alleviated once he finally heard the secret we had concealed together.
When I was younger, I'd always imagined sex to be a fast thing that once it was done you just shook the other person's hand but I'd never realised the deep conversations me and James would have, lying wrapped up in each other's arms which could last for hours. It felt oddly reminiscent to the day before Dorcas had been taken and everything had broken apart but I pushed that from my mind. Today was a day for happiness and if I remembered, the sadness I'd been repressing would creep back in. I couldn't let that happen, today was a day of happiness.
"Do you reckon you-know-who's ever had sex?" James asked, starting up yet another deep conversation.
"I don't know," I replied, "He used to be attractive when he was younger if you believe that so probably."
"Imagine if it was to a muggle."
"I doubt it was to a muggle."
"Yeah but imagine," He laughed, "Some old lady's sitting there, not knowing the random boy she shagged has massacred her kind."
"Or man," I added, "Maybe he swings both ways."
"I don't know if he swings anyway," James admitted, "I've heard that's a thing nowadays, people who don't want to sleep with anyone."
"So you get people who want to sleep with everyone - "
"Padfoot."
"And people who want to sleep with nobody," I continued, "That makes sense - "
There was a sharp knock at the door and I sat bolt upright. James still had a dizzy smile on his face as he leisurely called out, "Come in if you want but we're naked!"
"Um... don't think I'll come in then," Remus replied, "Prongs, we just wanted to talk to you downstairs ... and Lily, we wanted to talk to both of you."
"Sounds ominous," James called back, "Give us a minute, we'll be down."
"No rush," Remus replied, "Take your time, we'll wait."
I began to get up, hastily pulling a jumper over my head as he came and sat besides me, "Any idea what this is about?"
"Maybe."
"Can you give me a heads up?" He asked and I shook my head.
"I can't except ... I think it will explain a lot," I managed eventually.
"And the mystery thickens," He replied, planting a kiss on the top of my head before jumping up.
Even though I wasn't the one coming out, my hand was still shaking as we walked down. Sirius wouldn't meet my eyes other than one awkward smile as we sat down.
"I'm just going to get straight to the point," Remus said as we settled down, "Me and Sirius are - "
"Moving out," Sirius cut in suddenly, his fingers tapping against the sofa arm, "We're moving out because we think you two need space."
"I mean, you sort of have moved already," James replied, "But if you think this is because we're married, we don't mind having you two around. It's nice, right Lily?"
"Right."
Remus's brown eyes were wide and concerned, his mouth opening and closing as Sirius leant forward, his hands on his knees, "Padfoot, we agreed...."
"I know," Sirius whispered, resting his face in his hands, "I know we did but I don't know anymore."
"What is it?" James asked, standing up instinctively, "Padfoot, mate, what's wrong? Is everything okay? Are you in trouble?"
He made his way over to Sirius, putting a hand on his back. At this, Sirius finally looked up, his face hard to read, a mixture of so many emotions. Slowly, I saw his lips move, whispering softly the secret he'd kept for so long. Immediately after, he put his head back in his hands.
"Don't hate me, Prongs," He murmured, "I can't help it."
The room fell silent, both me and Remus looked at James, trying to figure out how he was reacting. His hand was still on Sirius's back, but he'd gone still, his breathing slowed to the minimum.
"Prongs?" Remus prompted after a minute or so of tenuous silence, "Prongs, say something."
"How long has this been going on for?" James said eventually, swallowing slightly.
"Over a year now," He replied, "Around the time when I was taken to Arbury Hall. But I had had these feelings since fourth year."
"But you dated Mary, and you dated Marlene," His brow was furrowed.
"And now we're dating each other," Remus said softly, "It's exactly the same, Prongs."
"Do you hate me?" Sirius cut in suddenly, "Because Prongs, if you do... please don't."
At this, James shook his head, "How could I hate you? I don't really get it, right now, I'll be honest, it's taking me a while to wrap my head around it but... but I'll try and get it. I don't hate you, Padfoot, Moony because you two are my brothers."
I couldn't help but smile as the three of them embraced, my mind drifting to Dorcas as it did so often and how she would react. My first thought was that she would have stood there with her hand on her heart but that was crap.
She would have nudged me, a smirk on her lips as she whispered, "Yeah, brothers who shag... it's called incest, mate."
