The Day with the Dramatic Return
"Okay, you know I would prefer to do a quiet entrance to the flat but there's no way in hell were doing that, right?" I asked James and James shook his head.
"You know me too well," He picked up the cat as I locked up the house with my wand, "Besides we have to give Dumble-paw a proper entrance... can we tell Padfoot and Moony that you came up with the name?"
I rolled my eyes at him, "Fine, it's a good name though, take credit!"
"Eh, I don't want to," He said, snuggling the cat.
"You sure Sirius will be okay with having a cat around the house?" I asked with a grin.
"He might have some objections but he'll just have to get used to it," James replied, "I'm paid for most of the house... well, my parents did but it was me by extension. If he has a problem, he can move out... I'm just kidding."
"I hope they like Dumble-paw," I replied, stepping away from the house, "I almost don't want to return, the real world is too big right now, it was nice just to relax here on the beach. Maybe we could just stay here?"
"It's not our house and besides, I reckon there's probably another newly wed couple coming today," James replied, "It will be nice to see everyone."
"I guess," I sighed, "Okay, have you got everything? You haven't left anything?"
"For the hundredth time, no," James replied with a smirk.
"Because if you have, we can always come back again," I replied.
"Lily, I haven't," He replied with a smile, "Let's go."
"Okay," He took my hand, somehow managing to keep Dumble-paw safe, "Let's go home. I've missed those crazy weirdos in a way too."
We linked hands and apparated away to the alley near our flat. It felt like England was trying to make me regret my decision even more as it was pouring down with rain when we got there and Dumble-paw almost left off of James at the shock of getting wet. I was already getting weirdly attached to Dumble-paw with his grey stripes and little scrunched up nose, even if he had interrupted our honeymoon.
"I can't believe it's raining," I shouted as we began to run to the flat, James shielding the cat more than his suitcase.
"Of course it is, it's England!" James yelled back as we both hurried inside, slamming the door behind us, "Lily, do you remember what you're doing?"
"I think so? I have my wand and I create was it red spark - "
"Gold sparks! Gold!"
"Sorry, gold sparks and then you enter and hold Dumble-paws up saying he is the eighth wonder of the world or something?" I asked, "Sorry, I'm not a natural at big events, I keep forgetting!"
"Don't worry, it's an acquired skill," James said, "Oh and remember the smoke too."
"How am I meant to create smoke and sparks at the same time?" I asked, raising my eyebrow at him.
"Eh, be creative?" I nodded and we walked upstairs, as quietly as we could other than the low purring of the cat. Although I gave James a calm smile, I was actually freaking out a bit that I would somehow ruin the big, dramatic entrance by now producing smoke and sparks at the same time.
"Okay, one.. two... thr - " James was interrupted by the door swinging open and we were met by Sirius who looked just as shocked to see us as we did him.
"You guys are back today?" Sirius asked, raising his eyebrow at us and I noticed his shirt was on inside out.
"Yeah, we were - "
"No, no, NO!" James said, "Close the door, close it now, I had a thing planned, it was a THING! You have to close it now so I can do the thing, you see, Padfoot? You ruined it, now close the door!"
"Oh right, sorry Prongs," Sirius said, hastily closing the door. James took a few deep breaths, ushering me ahead of him. I knocked on the door and Sirius answered again, a slight smirk on his face. I suddenly remembered I should be making the sparks and smoke as promised and hastily muttered the incantation, quickly switching between the two which worked better than expected.
"Padfoot, whilst on our travels, we discovered the eighth wonder of the world. You may think we're talking about the beautiful beaches, the blue ocean, the clear skies," James dropped his suitcase to the ground, "But we are instead talking about the beautiful green eyed cat that we picked up - "
"Lily or the cat?" Sirius asked.
"The cat in my hands," James snapped, "I present to you Dumble-paw!"
"You brought a cat into the house?" Sirius asked, "Prongs, Pot-girl - "
"No! I hate that. Call me Prongsette instead, please!" I replied, rolling my eyes and sighing in a Sirius-Black worthy way.
"Sorry, Pot-girl suits you way, way better," Sirius said with a shrug, "You know how I feel about cats, don't you? The answer is not good! Not good at all, I'm probably going to die in my sleep now!"
"Dumble-paw wouldn't do that, Padfoot, don't worry," James replied, "He's a smart cat, isn't he?"
Sirius didn't look convinced, sitting down on the sofa watching James sceptically, "You know, Prongs, every time I see you with the cat, I feel personally betrayed."
"But look at his nose!" James said and Sirius wrinkled his as if Dumble-paw was contagious with some awful disease. James was undeterred and continued playing. I sat down next to Sirius, giving him a consoling pat on the shoulder.
"Don't worry, Sirius," I said with a grin, "He's not going to replace you, maybe you'll even grow to love Dumble-paw."
"Incorrect," He scoffed, giving James and the cat a jealous glare, "I will never love that cat or any cat or work with a cat or befriend a cat - "
"When would you work with a cat?"
"I don't know... cats are smarter than they look, they can often tell I'm not a real Dog but now I will growl at them just like real dogs do," He said and I couldn't tell if he was seriously annoyed or not.
"Padfoot, who's at the door?" I heard Remus call from upstairs and realised that I was an awful friend for forgetting he lived in the house.
"Moony, it's me and Lily!" James called up, "Come and meet Dumble-paw!"
"You don't have to, it's not really that special!" Sirius called back quickly.
"Okay, hold on a second!" Remus called down, "Just getting dressed!"
"It's after supper!" I yelled back, my suspicions growing slightly.
"I was taking a nap!" He replied but before I could say anything else, Sirius dramatically stood up with a start.
"Okay, James, maybe best to put the cat down, I have to discuss something with you two and the cat can't help," He replied, spitting the word cat each time as if it were a swear word. I tried to conceal my smile at his completely unnecessary jealousy which was very hard to do. Remus came down the stairs soon after, his face lighting up when he saw us.
"Lily, Prongs, you're back!" He said, dashing down the stairs as I ran up and hugged him. He stumbled back a bit due to the force that I ran at him with, "I missed you, Padfoot's been driving me crazy!"
"Hey, I was a delight to live with!" Sirius said, "I even helped wash up one time."
"You somehow made the plates messier than they were before," Remus replied with a laugh, "I don't know how that was possible."
"I feel like it still counts," Sirius replied, folding his arms and giving Remus a look of mock irritation, "I mean... sort of... okay, fine it doesn't but I was amusing, kept making you laugh which is why the plates ended up messy."
"Okay, fine it was nice even if the plates weren't cleaned that well," Remus admitted, "Have you told them yet?"
"Told us what?" James asked, suddenly looking concerned, holding Dumble-paw to his chest for comfort.
"You see the way he's holding the cat?" Sirius whispered to me," That could be you, I think we both need to help get rid of it."
"Tell me what?" James asked again.
"Okay, so yesterday me and Padfoot got talking about the whole spy thing about the Wolfsbane leak and how they knew and we figured that we'd been too restricted. We thought it could only be the people who were in the flat when we decided who was going where but then we realised, it could have been the person who sent us the message. It could have been someone hiding outside watching us, the plan to steal the Wolfsbane wasn't too complicated." Remus said, "So then we decided that we had to get more information, find out about any more links and find a common theme between them which was when things got a little out of hand..."
"Moony, did someone die?" James asked.
"What? Oh God no!"
"Can see how you'd think that though," Sirius grinned, "When I'm around, anything's possible."
"But no, nobody died. You know how after we go out and fight, we always end up getting asked questions and stuff?" Remus asked. I shook my head.
"I've never had that."
"I have," James said, "Dumbledore and people always want to know if anyone died, sequence of events and whatever."
"He was very interested in the night at Arbury Hall," Sirius admitted, "Kept asking me at the hospital - "
"Dumbledore was there that day?" I asked, "How did I not know this?"
"You were out cold, he came and visited," Sirius shrugged, "Didn't think it was important, he just likes to snoop around."
"Yeah, so we figured he probably writes this down somewhere or something to keep track, they wouldn't ask questions if they didn't need it," Remus gave a confident smirk which was scarily similar to James and Sirius, "And I was right. We found them."
"Where...?" I asked, eyeing the two up suspiciously. They exchanged a slightly awkward look, clearly debating whether to say anything.
"Well, when I was at Dedalus's house, I did a bit of snooping... not snooping as I was allowed to be there but in the big library at the house, I found a bunch of archived records from Grindlewald's war so I figured maybe the rest were there," Remus said, "So we stopped by for a chat and a cup of tea, Peter did the actual stealing - "
"You stole a bunch of classified Order records?" I asked, my eyes widening in horror.
"Without me?" James looked equally as horrified although for different reasons.
"We wanted to," Sirius said, "We really did, honestly but we just couldn't. We didn't know where you were and it was your honeymoon... plus you had made a new friend by the looks of things."
"Dumble-paw isn't going to replace you!" James insisted, "Padfoot, you'll always be my best friend."
"I know... I know," Sirius said, "I'm sorry, Prongs, I know that I'm just being paranoid."
"How are we completely forgetting that you guys STOLE Order records out of a safe house? Do you know how dangerous that could be if they get into the wrong hands?" I asked, "That was stupid and reckless!"
"Well, maybe it was stupid and reckless of the Order to have records in the first place!" Sirius said, a little defensively, "Besides we want to figure out who the spy is - "
"Didn't you think that maybe Dedalus or even Dumbledore could have been the spy themselves?" I asked, shaking my head at them as I sunk down onto a chair, "Sirius, this sonds like something you would do but Remus, I am very, VERY disappointed in you."
"I don't trust the Higher ups," Sirius admitted, "I've heard stories from my parents, a lot of the higher ups are the spies. It's easy to get sucked in, to get manipulated into spying simply because you're scared or they threaten you, it could be anyone. The Order doesn't pay and many people may resent that. It offers no reward other than a good feeling that you're doing the right thing. Voldemort offers money, power, a place in the New World Order, it can be appealing to some people. The only people I truly trust are the people in this room right now, I don't even trust the girls... and Peter of course but he's ever present."
"If they catch us, they could think we're the spies," Remus said softly.
"Well, we're not," Sirius said.
"This was stupid and reckless of you and it will end us all," I said, my voice quiet and monotonous for extra effect as I slowly rose and began to go up the stairs, "And screw you, you may not trust the girls but I do. And Peter isn't ever present, he's either present or he's not and... I'm getting away from my main point that this was a dumb idea. I hope you're ready to pay the consequences for this theft because I will not be cleaning up your mess when everything goes wrong."
