The Day with the Downcast Farewell II
"Sirius..." I said, "What did Glenn do?"
"Glenn, what did you do?" I heard Dorcas murmur in the background. The tall man next to her didn't shrug or say anything, just glaring over at Sirius.
"Sirius, what did Glenn do?" I asked, again, with more urgency, "Sirius Black, tell me right now, quietly and sensibly. We are not making a big scene of this!"
I suddenly became aware of several eyes turned on me and realised, with horror, that I was the one making a scene. Sirius glanced over at the people before turning to Glenn, his face contorting back into a look of horror. Glenn remained still although I could have sworn his face twisted into a small smirk.
"I'll gladly tell but not here, I don't want to make this day any harder for Prongs than it is - "
"Prongs? Huh," Glenn sniggered, "Why because he's horny for you?"
"He has a wife and she is right here," Sirius snarled, "This is a hard day and you shouldn't be here, Pron - James will not be happy."
"I came with Dorcas," Glenn replied, his face twisting into a smirk, "You can't kick me out - "
"Sirius," I hissed, "What happened to taking this far away?"
"Of course, if Glenn doesn't hit himself in the legs with his beater's bat first," Sirius snapped, walking away from us. Me and Dorcas exchanged a glance as the four of us slipped away from the funeral. Remus noticed us slip away but luckily James wasn't looking otherwise there may have been a problem. I didn't want to make this funeral any harder than it had to be but if I didn't defuse the problem, it had the potential to explode.
As we walked, Dorcas let go of Glenn's arm, sidling up to me.
"Lily, I'm sorry, I knew it was a bad idea..." For once, there were no jokes, her face was deadly serious.
"Maybe a little bit of warning would have been nice," I hissed, "Did you know about this?"
"This is new to me," Dorcas admitted, "Glenn isn't a talker, I didn't know he even knew the boys. Lily, I'm... I'm genuinely sorry."
I gave a sigh, "I know you didn't do this on purpose, Dorcas."
"Honestly, I'm just as worried as you" She whispered back, "I mean what if there's sexual tension and they start, you know... making out."
I gave a weak laugh, "Amusing."
We walked up to a small clearing where Sirius and Glenn were standing several meters apart. Sirius's face was contorted with rage but Glenn looked calm, eerily calm. Dorcas quickly ran up to his side, whispering something which he for once replied to. Although I didn't want to create 'sides', I hastily ran up to Sirius.
"Lily, I'm sorry for causing a scene but you know how James and Snape were enemies?" He glared over at Glenn, "Well... Glenn was my Snape."
I glanced between the two of them, "How come I never met him then? I think I heard James mention him once and that was it."
"Of course I never mentioned him in front of you," Sirius snarled, "We weren't that close in Hogwarts other than those deep chats but not in this sort of way."
"Wait, so you had a rival?" I glanced over at Glenn who was glaring over antagonistically, "What did he do - "
"Are you actually going to tell her?" Glenn shouted over, taking a few steps, "Or can you not do that without James... sorry, of course you can't, I forgot you shared a brain cell."
"I would punch you right now... that's right not hex you, how embarrassing for a beater to be punched," Sirius snarled.
"Actually it's not embarrassing, what would be embarrassing is if I punched you and marked you up that pretty face of yours," He snarled.
"That wouldn't be embarrassing just unfortunate - "
"Okay, you two need to stop," I snapped, suddenly stepping between them, "This day is hard enough already, can you two just tell me what Glenn did so we can get back or Glenn... I might have to kick you out of the funeral."
"Lily..." Dorcas cut in but I ignored her. If Glenn refused to calm down, he had to go.
"Fine, I'll tell you," Sirius said, "But Glenn... Glenn is the scum of the earth, a typical Slytherin, the warthog of humans."
"Oh just tell me already," I snapped, "I don't want to be here, I want to be supporting my husband right now, not in a clearing with two angry boys. Spit it out."
"Fine," Sirius was continually clenching and unclenching his fist, "Fine, I'll tell you - "
"Then do it."
"I will."
"Then do it!"
"SIRIUS!" I yelled, glancing hastily over my shoulders to check my shout hadn't alerted the attention of the guests.
"It all started back in third year when this snake published a list of the hottest guys and he... he put himself on top," Sirius held out his hand towards Glenn, "I mean look at him, look! He looks like a string bean!"
"Original," Glenn snorted.
"And guess where I was? Not even on the list!" Sirius snarled, "Him at the top, what a disgrace."
"I kind of see it," Dorcas said with an awkward laugh, "Personally I would put Peter at the top... little joke to diffuse the tension."
"Dorcas, not now," I whispered to her and she shut up which was very unlike her.
"And then, in fourth, he overhead me talking about this girl I liked, Cynthia, absolutely gorgeous. And then what does Glenn do? Being the snake he is, he asks her out before me and they dated for six months... six months."
"I didn't overhear you, I liked her too," Glenn replied calmly, "We'd been friends for ages, it was hardly out of the blue, you just hardly paid attention to her."
"Then in fifth year, this arsehole was picking on Regulus - "
"For the last time, you attacked me for no reason," Glenn said, his face still devoid of emotion, "I was helping him with his beater's swing! I wanted him to get onto the Quidditch team - "
"Right, right... you were 'helping' him, he looked in pain, Glenn, in pain," Sirius snarled, "So I hexed you to get away from him but you never stopped. You continued to harass him, to antagonise him - "
"I was helping him," Glenn said, his face darkening.
"Helping, is that what you call it?" His mouth was contorted into an angry grimace, "You helped him with your own twisted ideals."
"I'm not a deatheater, Sirius, if that's what you're implying," Glenn replied calmly.
"Yes but you know what you did, you... you 'helped' him," Sirius said. For once, he was stammering on his words, a drastic contrast to his usual casual eloquence.
"Exactly. I helped him. You could even say I was like a brother to him," Glenn said, his smile twisting into a cruel smile.
"A brother? You think you were like a brother to him more than me?" Sirius said, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to figure out what to say, "No... no, this is a funeral, I can't deal with Glenn Fletcher here."
As he stormed off, a strange look had passed over his grey eyes, a look which I hadn't seen for a while, not since those long talks in seventh year. Glenn had a vaguely triumphant look on his face as Sirius walked away, in his mind he was victorious even though the battle was pointless to begin with.
"Well, now that that's done, shall we head back?" Glenn asked, slipping an arm around Dorcas's shoulders who's smile was now completely wiped off of her face.
"No. No, Glenn you should go," I said firmly.
"Lily, he's here with me - "
"He's causing trouble," I replied firmly.
At this, Dorcas's brow furrowed and she stepped forward slightly, "That's not fair, he was calm the whole time, Sirius was causing the trouble."
"I'm not sending James's best friend away from his parents' funeral, I can't do that," I folded my arms, realising my firm voice was identical to Petunia's normal voice, "I'm sorry but he's not staying."
"Lily, this isn't fair," She lowered her voice, "Is this because he's Slytherin?"
"He could be a Hufflepuff for all I care," I snapped, "Dorcas, he's not staying, please get him out of here, he's not... he's not wanted and you need to stop fighting or I'll... I'll send you away too."
She straightened slightly, pursing her lips and tucking her blonde hair behind her ears, "Lily, please don't send us away - "
"Well, then accept that he caused trouble and get him to piss off," I said, slight irritation boiling up inside of me.
"You're being rude," She said, blinking slightly.
"Dorcas, I don't want him here - "
"But he's my boyfriend - "
"I don't care!" I said, the words coming out more violently than intended, "Get him out, he upset Sirius, he's bee through enough."
"What he said was a lie. He blames for me Regulus becoming a deatheater," Glenn interrupted, taking a few gliding steps forwards, "In reality, he knows it was just circumstance. Furthermore, if he'd wanted to protect him, he could have done. He could have taken him away and he knows that."
"That's very nice, Glenn but you still can't be there," I snapped, "I don't want you here."
Dorcas's blue eyes were swimming with tears at this point, a sight which made a pit form in my stomach, "Lily, I came here to support you and I need him here with me, please. Lily, don't send him away, I don't know if I could stand it - "
"You could stand it? You didn't even know Fleamont and Euphemia - "
"It's just the whole thing is so upsetting," She said weakly.
"For me more than you. I already have Dumbledore breathing down my neck, James and Sirius are very emotional, I'm sorry if this is so hard for you but it's not a picnic for me either," I folded my arms, narrowing my eyes into green snakelike slits, "Maybe you should go too, Dorcas."
"But I cam to support you - "
"I didn't want you though, did I! James invited you, I... I invited Marlene!" I yelled back, "I wanted her here, not you - "
"I only came because she wasn't coming!" Dorcas yelled back, "She's not coming, Lily, maybe she is a spy or maybe she's just too busy shagging Mark and doesn't care about you anymore! She doesn't want to support you but I do and you're being unfair and ... and prejudiced."
I was usually a calm person but this whole incident had riled my up the wrong way. My eyes somehow narrowed further as I took a few menacing steps forward.
"Dorcas, you take your Slytherin boyfriend and get out of here, I don't want you here, you'll only cause more trouble than you're worth," I snarled, instantly regretting the words as Dorcas stiffened slightly. Part of me hoped that she would fight back and I could forgive her but we were both too angry for that to happen and we knew it.
"I only came for you," She replied coolly before stepping back a few paces and taking Glenn's hand, walking off and disappearing with a pop. I stayed there for a few minutes longer, trying to calm myself down although it was to no avail. Eventually I decided to just pretend the tears and anger was down to the deaths and not the dramatic, impromptu scene that had just occurred.
When I came back, Sirius's face seemed to brighten slightly when he realised Glenn wasn't with me but I turned away; I didn't particularly want to see him either. A few people seemed to notice I'd vanished and then returned but nobody commented on it luckily and I was able to sneak in without being noticed. After a few minutes, Remus sidled up to me, a concerned look on my face.
"Lily, are you okay?" He asked, his brown eyes wide with worry. I sniffed slightly, hastily rubbing my eyes with the back of my hand.
"Yes, I'm alright, funerals just make me sad."
Sad was an understatement. I was scared that I'd lashed out at one of my best friends, scared that the whole war was slowly breaking me not to mention the 'fun' meeting I had scheduled with Dumbledore.
I only wished somebody had warned me that the real world after Hogwarts was not all it was cracked up to be, I would have stayed in that damn castle and never come out.
