Chapter Six

I lay on the ground trying to process what just happened.  I slowly pushed myself to my feet, blood dripping from my nose.  I stared at the city, just in front of me.  I could see people walking around, hurrying off to work, talking with friends, and window shopping on the store line street.  It looked like any normal city.  Granted, there was no suburbs, it just stood out like a sore thumb, and everything was different shades of grey, but other than that normal.

So why had I run into the city?  Full on walked into something like a wall.  I reached a hesitant hand out and sure enough there was a wall, cool and smooth as glass, but nowhere to be seen.  I looked around to see if there was something to use as a tissue to catch the blood from my nose.  I watched as the blood dripped from my hand and onto the grey ground.  The deep red looked so out of place in the grey landscape, morbid, but almost as if they were meant to be paired together . . .

No.  That was sick.  I pushed the thought aside and lifted my hand to the wall and started to walk to my right, keeping my left hand on the wall, and my right under my nose.  I walked along the city limits, making sure to never take my hand off the wall.  I hated leaving a dribble of a blood trail, but there was nothing I could do about it.  I kept walking, and walking, and walking.  I walked for so long I had lost track of the time.

"Hey,"  I whipped around to face a boy about my age with black hair and blue eyes.  "Catch."  He tossed something towards me.  As I unknotted it I saw that it was handkerchief.  "For your nose."

"Thank you," I replied, cleaning off my bloodied hand the best I could the. Holding it up to my nose.

"Here, let me clean off your hand."  He took out a bottle of water and poured it over my hand, and then took like a washcloth and scrubbed it clean.  "There you go.  All clean for ya."  I was about to say something, when a realisation hit me.

"You, you can talk."  I watched as he cocked his head to the side

"Yeah, and so can you."  I shook my head as much as I could while holding a handkerchief to my nose.

"No, I meant like, you can say more than one thing.  The people I've met have only-"

"You've met some of the Ides?"  His tone I startle turned from relaxed and joking to urgent.

"The what?"

"The people who only speak one sentence, over and over again, no matter what you say to them."

"Oh, well then yes, I have.  Two of them.  Goldie and 2B."  I smiled, slightly impressed that I was able to think of names on the fly, but the guy was obviously not impressed.

"That's bad, that's very bad."  He looked at his watch and cursed under his breath.  "If you ever want to go home again, I suggest you follow me."  He turned and started jogging away, leaving me with no choice but to follow.
