Chapter Seven
The boy started leading me away from the city at a fast pace and in a few miles we had come across a small worn down house. He let me go inside first before following and locking the door. I looked around the small house. Around me was a makeshift living room with a worn recliner and an old, small loveseat. Across the room was a small kitchen with a round table with four chairs. Off to the side was a small hall with only three doors. One I was assuming was a bathroom, another a bedroom, but I wasn't sure what the third could be. Maybe another bedroom or a closet. I didn't bother to think much on it. I checked to see if my nose was finished bleeding, thankful that is had. I folded up the handkerchief and put it in my back pocket, not caring if I got blood on my pants.
"Um, how do I even know I can trust you," I called out as he dumped some things out of his bag and onto the table.
"Listen," he sighed. "I've been here a long time. If you want to live I'm your only shot." I made my way over to him to see he was watching some sort of hologram projection map with little colored dots.
"Woah, how do you have this technology?" He shrugged.
"Things are very different here than where you came from."
"Speaking of here, where is here?"
"What? Oh, yeah. Welcome to the Land of Shakespeare, Home of Dreams and Nightmares."
"Yeah, okay," I shook my head, not quite understanding. "And you are?"
"My name is Lockwood, I've been stuck here 24 years." I gave him a look. He didn't look much over my age, and I'm 15. He chuckled a little bit. "Sorry, time here works a little different. One year for you is only a day here. So technically I'm still only sixteen, but I wouldn't exactly be able to catch up with my old friends." I nodded, trying to process things.
"So If I get home today, months will have passed?" He shook his head.
"For you there is an exception. You have until this day is over, 24 hours, to get home and go back to your normal life. You'll wake up like this was all a dream, or a nightmare." He sighed and looked out the window. "For you it's looking more like a nightmare."
"Why's that? Does it have to do with the Ides people?"
"Yes." He motioned for me to sit and he took the chair opposite of me. "Here in LOS, of Land of Shakespeare, there is a sorceress. She got stuck here, much like you did, but many years ago, I think it was about 20, if I remember correctly. I tried to get her out, but she refused to leave, saying something like this was where she was meant to be. She took over, creating a city, and hypnotizing people to do her will. The only people allowed in her city are those she has under her control."
"So where do I come in?" He looked at me strangely. "Where do I come in, how do I help," I repeated myself.
"No, you didn't come here to help. A few kids come here every year, kids with a connection to Shakespeare. This year you just happen to be the only one."
"But I must have been sent here to help," I insisted. "I have no connection to Shakespeare, and isn't that how it works in like, movies and books?" He laughed.
"If things happened the way they did in books then you would be madly in love me, we'd save LOS, and then you'd refuse to leave and stay behind with me." I opened my mouth, then shut it. "Exactly my point. Anyway the sorceress' name is March, and those under her control are called Ides, hence the name Ides of March, beware of them."
"Okay, things are making more sense now. And why can't you leave?" He sighed.
"One living thing comes in, one living thing goes out, at least that's what I was told by the last person who had gotten stuck here, except they tricked me and escaped leaving me here."
"Oh." There was an awkward silence that filled the room.
"Yeah, but that doesn't matter at the moment. Those two Ides you met, Gold was Sona and To Be was Cassidy, or Cass. They got here three years ago and became March's strongest Ides. From now on steer clear of everyone except me. March knows you're here now, and since she's in charge, the land will move to her benefit."
"You mean the landscape changes?"
"Yes, to help whoever is most in need. Now come on. You've been here about 4 hours, that only leads 20 hours left to get you home. If we're March's sole target, we best move now."
