Chapter Five

As I walked closer, I could see the figure was a girl.  She had long golden blonde hair, and tanned skin.  She brown eyes sparkled as she studied something in her hand.  When close enough I could see that it was a glittery keychain in the shape of an "S".

"Hello," I said cautiously, not sure who she was or how she would react.  She didn't make a reply.  "Uh, I seem to be a bit lost.  Could you like, um, tell me where I am?"  The girl looked up at me, as if realizing I was there for the first time.

"Not all that glitters is gold."  Her brown eyes bore into me, as if I were her keychain and should be studied.

"That, that's true alright.  Heh heh," I scratched the back of my neck.  "But that doesn't tell me where I am."

"Not all that glitters is gold."  she cocked her head to one side as if she wanted to ask me a question, but she didn't.

"Yes, you've said that twice now.  I understand that."  I bit my lip, looking for a different question.  "Um, I don't think I know your name.  Does it begin with S?"  I gestured toward the keychain, but she pulled it away and shoved it in her back pocket.

"Not all that glitters is gold," she huffed angrily, as if I had insulted her.  I took a step back and raised my hands.

"Hey, I'm sorry, I didn't mea-"

"Not all that glitters is gold!"  She ran off, leaving me in a confused daze.  I started to walk forward but stopped.  Ahead of me was a city skyline poking out of the fog.

"Woah," I breathed, and started to walk towards it.  It was only about a few miles away and I figured I'd make it in no time.  About halfway to the city, I met another figure.  This time it was a boy, sitting on the ground with his head between his knees.  He had chestnut brown hair and pale skin.

"Hey, are you okay," I asked warily, remembering my last experience.  He let out a sigh but did not pick his head up.  I crouched down in front of him and tapped his knee.  "Hey, you can talk to me.  I'm not gonna hurt you."  He looked up and his pale green eyes met mine.

"To be or not to be, that is the question."  He sighed and put his head back down.

"Um, what question."  He sighed again and picked up his head.

"To be or not to be, that is the question."  I frowned and stood up, and this time he did not put his head back down.

"To be what?  Explain it to me."  He pushed himself to his feet and stared at me as if I was stupid.

"To be or not to be, that is the question!"  He was starting to get exasperated with me, and I was started to get nervous.  Why could each person only say one thing?

"Okay, okay, I understand.  Um, do you think you could tell me what city this is?"  Instantly the boy's eyes grew wide.

"To be or not to be, that is the question," he muttered, before running off as well.  I sighed.  Yet another person who was no help.  I bit my lip and looked at the city.  If everyone could only say one thing, would I ever get a straight answer?  Was the city even worth going to?  I shrugged.  I had to try, and on I walked, right into the city limits.
