7) Parting Gifts

Still in covert mode, Zeus raised his eyebrows, but said nothing at my appearance. But that didn't matter, I was ready. "So, not to be rude," The Olympians' expressions turned guarded and tense. "And I'm not trying to be ungrateful but, I think I should leave."

"Leave?" Artemis repeated, tilting her head to the side.

"He's got a point." Athena cut in. "Apollo's still angry, and eventually he'll find- what's your name, now? It would be best to get used to hearing it."

"Alexander." I said, beaming. "Alexander Lias."

"Good," she replied. "A good Greek name. Anyway, Apollo will eventually find Alexander if he stays here and Hestia and I can't care for him forever. If he really wants to get away from Apollo he should get away from anything associated with him. Which includes us immortals."

I frowned, not wanting to leave Hestia or Athena, but also not wanting Apollo to kill me.

Hermes toyed with his hands, coming closer. "Well, why do you think we did this whole makeover thing?"

"I knew I was going to the human realm, but not completely without you all!" My eyes watered with tears as I thought of the past eleven years with Athena and Hestia. One fell, and I stared at the drop before wiping my eyes with a certain resolve. "I- I don't want to leave." I looked around at the Olympians, determination shining in my eyes. "But I have to."

My resolve was met with faint smiles that gradually widened. My tail flicked back and forth with happiness. My tail! If I was to blend in with humans, I would have to hide it. But how? I gestured to it vaguely, hoping someone would help.

Luckily, ever-observant Hestia noticed the predicament. She beckoned me over and after a moment, pointed to my necklace. Thankfully I had rescued it unscathed from Aphrodite's makeover. "That's it! I can charm the necklace to make your tail invisible."

My smile quickly disappeared as I realized I had to take my necklace off. Hesitantly, I surrendered the memento only to get it back less than thirty seconds later.

"There you go. I added a few extra enchantments so it blinks when there's danger. It will turn red when something might kill you."

"Or someone." I added under my breath. I thanked her and afterward something told me it was time to go.

My farewell party was short and sweet. There was a simple cake, and each god left one by one after individually promising on the River Styx not to directly interfere with my life. I wasn't completely ready to give up everything. As parting gifts, most Olympians gave me something practical, like money or clothes, but not all of them.

Demeter gave me one sentence before vanishing. "Start a garden in case there's a famine so you don't starve to death."

Hermes also only said one thing, but it was only slightly more useful. "Whatever you do, don't get caught." Of course, that only applied if I was planning on being a criminal. In addition, the god gave me a blank check.

Aphrodite handed me no less than seventeen shopping bags of clothes, most of which I would never, ever wear. One bag was full of dresses, which made me question what was going through her head.

Artemis gave me the advice to become nocturnal. Though it was unnatural, it could be done, and would help prevent Apollo, the Sun god, from finding me. I planned on taking her advice after I did some research on it.

A few minutes later, only two goddesses remained. Hestia smiled and gave me a warm hug. Her gift had been enchanting my necklace, so she only offered encouraging words. "And lastly," Hestia said, looking me in the eye, "you must never, ever forget where home is."

The hearth blazed, and Hestia disappeared into it. I stared at the flames long after she had gone, tears wavering on my eyes. I turned to Athena, and a sad smile spread across my face. "I'll miss you." I said finally.

"So will I." Athena replied, pulling me into a tight embrace. "But if you look hard enough," she whispered in my ear, "you'll find me."

When I opened my eyes, I was on the sidewalk in a light jacket as light rain fell from a night sky. Here goes nothing.
