Chapter 17
Can's POV
I decided to take P'Wan's call first.
I swiped my phone and said, "Hi, P'Wan," in my sweetest voice.
"Who is P'Wan???"
Shit! I had swiped on Tin's call instead of P'Wan's!
What was I going to tell him now.
"Cat got your tongue?" I heard Tin say in the coldest voice I had heard him say so far.
"You don't have to tell me, Can, I can tell who she is."
"Tin! You're jumping to all the wrong conclusions!" I said in a voice begging for understanding.
"Am I?" Tin asked coldly.
"Yes, you are!" I insisted, although I could tell even from my own voice that I didn't sound very convincing.
"Don't insult my intelligence, Can," said Tin coldly, "and don't expect to hear from me on Wednesday."
And with those words, he cut the call.
I knew that it would be pointless to call Tin to try to assuage his anger.
I decided to return P'Wan's missed call.
"Hi, P'Wan," I said when she answered, "I'm sorry that I wasn't able to take your call earlier. I was on the phone with a friend when you called."
"No problem," said P'Wan, "the reason I called was to tell you that I had already bought our tickets online from my university's website, so please don't back out on Sunday."
"I won't, P'Wan," I said, "I'm actually looking forward to it."
"Cool!" she said, "good night then, Can. See you on Sunday!"
"Good night, P'Wan," I said,"thank you for shouldering the cost of the tickets."
"Of course," she said, and cut the call.
I tried calling Tin the following day during my lunch break but I got transferred to his voice mail.
I wondered if he would keep true to his word not to let me know what the results of his follow up visit with his doctor were on Wednesday.
I tried calling Tin again just before I went to the playing field for soccer practice.
He still wouldn't take my call.
"Are you alright?" asked Good when he saw my furrowed eyebrows.
"I'm okay, Good, how's P'Wan doing?" I couldn't help asking him about his sister.
"She's alright," Good replied, "she won't be able to pick me up after practice. She's staying late doing research at her university library."
I felt a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing her again this evening.
Good and I concentrated on our practice. We were feeling satisfied with how our playing had improved a lot after every practice. We were really looking forward to beating the Engineering team at the end of the month which was just two weeks away.
Wednesday came and I bombarded Tin with calls during my lunch break because I knew that by then his follow up visit with his doctor had ended.
I was starting to get frustrated with my failed attempts to get through to him.
Should I stop by his house after class? I didn't have any soccer practice today since it was Wednesday and Wednesday was our day off from practice.
I decided to go to Tin's house after classes. I took a cab instead of a bus because his house was not within the route that buses went through.
I was about to press the buzzer on the gate when I stopped myself from doing so.
From afar, because the gate was far from the front doorstep but was visible from the gate, I saw Matt and Tin.
They were locked in an embrace.
