Part 36: Servant

9:00 am

STAR LABS

November 17th, 2018

Gathered around the Cortex, Henry waited for his father along with Cisco, Caitlin, Ralph, Harry, and Joe. Tapping his feet Henry glanced at the time. After receiving the message from his mother, Henry was anxious to see what his father had in stores for him. A gust of wind blew into the Cortex as Barry came to a stop with Iris in his arms.

"Great you guys are all here," he said before setting Iris down.

"Yeah," replied Henry stepping forward. "So what kind of test did you have in mind for me?" asked Henry looking at his father.

"Well after pondering the idea for a while, Iris helped me come up with the perfect way to see if you are good enough to join me on the field," said Barry smiling at Iris.

"She did?" asked Henry looking at Iris.

"I did!" smiled Iris wickedly. Looking at her reaction Henry scrunched his eyebrow in confusion. He had a bad feeling about this.

"Well what is it?" asked Cisco curiously.

"I have decided if Henry would like to join me on the field, he will have to complete a series of tasks," said Barry.

"What kind of task?" questioned Caitlin standing by her son.

"Well starting from now on Henry will have to assist our every need. Whether it's retrieving a pencil falling off the desk, dry cleaning, coffee, or our favorite pastry from France, Henry will have to use his speed to complete each task for the rest of the day," explained Barry.

"Is this some kind of a joke?!" asked Henry looking at his father like he was crazy.

"No, it's not," butted in Iris. "It would be a great way to test your speed and reflexes to see if you can multitask, and if you're any good. Besides, you'll be like our own private servant for the day,"  shrugged Iris like it was not a big deal.

"Exactly," said Barry nodding his head in agreement. "And to start you off I would like an Iced Americano," smiled Barry.

"Would you guys like anything?" asked Barry, looking at the rest of the team. Looking among each other the team stood there not sure what to say. "Don't be shy this will be good for him," encouraged Barry.

"Well in that case, I'll have an espresso with a chocolate croissant on the side," said Cisco.

"Ohhh! I want pancakes with eggs and bacon along with a cup of coffee too," added Ralph.

"A cup of Joe please," laugh Joe at his corny joke.

"An Iced coffee," said Harry knowing he's gonna need it to get through the day.

"And I'll have a strawberry strudel with a Grande, Quad, Nonfat, One-Pump, No-Whip, Mocha," said Iris walking over to take a seat on one of the computer chairs. "Oh and I also want a box of pastry from France. The finest preferably," said Iris beginning to file her nails.

Looking down at Iris, Henry was a loss for words. Are they serious? Glancing at his father Henry stared into his see-green eyes to see if he was pulling his leg. Noticing that he was being completely serious Henry looked down at the floor. Is this all he thought of him? As a servant?

Looking between Iris and Barry, Caitlin couldn't help but feel disgusted. She understood Iris's motive. But Barry's?! Henry was his own son and shouldn't be treated like this.

"Alright," said Henry, deciding to play his little game. He wasn't gonna let this little roadblock stop him from being a hero out on the field. Walking over towards the computer chair Henry grabbed his jacket. Slinging it on Henry turned around to face the team. Looking at his mother who had not spoken a word since his father's 'grand idea' Henry looked at her puzzled.

"Would you like anything mom?" asked Henry, figuring she would like to participate as well.

"No," said Caitlin shaking her head not wanting to take part in Barry's stupid plan. "I'm fine," assured Caitlin.

Looking into her eyes Henry couldn't help but smile. At least he knew someone respected him.

"Alright she said she doesn't want anything. Now run along. I don't have all day," waved Iris trying to fan Henry away. Scoffing Henry disappeared in a flash leaving a trail of paper falling behind.

Clearing his throat, Barry got the attention of the rest of the Team. "Alright guys! Now that Henry is gone I want you all to make a list of things Henry should do for each of you today. And remember not to hold back," smiled Barry trying to convince himself and the team that it was the right thing to do.

"I already got my list," said Iris proudly waving a slip of paper in the air.

Nodding their head everyone, except for Caitlin got out a pen and paper beginning their list. Looking at everyone beginning to scribble down something for Henry to do, Caitlin shook her head at them. This wasn't right. And it sure as hell wasn't right for them to this to her own son.

"Barry," called out Caitlin, gaining the speedster's attention. "Can I talk to you for a minute. In private," added Caitlin. Looking at her Barry nodded his head before joining her in the medical wing and away from someone eavesdropping on their conversation.

-----------------------------------------

MEDICAL WING

"What's up?" wondered Barry, turning towards her.

"What the hell were you thinking?!" growled Caitlin

"Excuse me," said Barry taken back by her sudden coldness

"What you did out there! How could you treat our son like some...servant!" yelled Caitlin in anger.

"Cait-" said Barry, trying to calm her down.

"No, don't you Cait me! How could you possible listen to Iris and her stupid idea-" began Caitlin.

"Iris is my wife!" yelled Barry cutting her off. Looking at him Caitlin stood there at a loss for words. He never yelled at her before. Seeing this Barry sighed before running a hand through his hair. "OK," said Barry in a more calming tone. "I was struggling to come up with an idea to test Henry and she helped me out," explained Barry.

"And you listened to her," said Caitlin knowing that as long as he was married to Iris he would never see her as more than a friend.

"Yeah I did," admitted Barry.

Looking into his sea green, Caitlin looked away. No matter what she said to him he wouldn't change his mind. Once he puts his mind to something he usually is determined to finish it.

"Look Caitlin," said Barry, taking a step towards her. "I know this idea seems insane but I'm telling you it's gonna work," he said running a soothing hand down her arms making Caitlin sigh. "Don't you trust me," said Barry looking into her eyes,

"Of course I trust you, Barry," replied Caitlin without a second though. "It'd just...I don't want you to do something you're gonna regret," sighed Caitlin knowing someone will get hurt in the end.

"It won't," assured Barry. "This is gonna work, Cait. Trust me," said Barry with determination in his eyes.

"Ok," sighed Caitlin. "I'll let you have it your way," nodded Caitlin moving away from Barry causing his arms to drop by his sides. "But when this backfires, don't come running back to me," she said before pushing past him and leaving him alone in the medical wing. Looking at her walk away Barry couldn't help but think; was this the right thing? Was he doing the right thing? Of course it was! So shaking away his doubts Barry exited the Cortex joining the rest of the team.

-------------------------------

CORTEX

Walking into the Cortex Barry stood next to Iris. Standing up from her chair Iris hugged Barry's waist.

"Are you alright?" asked Iris, noticing Barry was tensed.

"I'm fine," smiled Barry, kissing her forehead to prove his point.

Suddenly a gust of wind blew into the Cortex before running back as Henry began to bring everyone what they requested one by one.

"There you go," breathed out Henry coming to a stop by his mother. "Those are all your orders," said Henry trying to catch his breath.

"Great," said Barry, taking a sip of his drink before sighing in content. "Now that you're done your first task we have a couple of other things for you to do," said Barry walking around to collect everyone's slip of paper.

"What?" asked Henry confused.

"Here are a couple of things you must do for us today," said Barry handing the pile of papers to Henry. "Along with what we say," shrugged Barry as his phone beeped notifying him that he was needed at the precinct. "I got to run," said Barry making his way out of the Cortex with Joe and Ralph trailing behind him. Walking out of the Cortex Harry went to run some tests on the new meta-human.

Looking down at her phone Iris got a message from her boss. "Make sure the dry cleaning is not crumpled or I'll have you iron it all out. OK?" she smiled widely at Henry.

"Whatever you want your highness," mocked Henry, bowing like she was queen.

"Good," smiled Iris making her way out.

"Hey Caitlin," called out Cisco, making her take her eyes off her son. "Could you help me with the right chemical ingredients for this new prototype I'm working on?" asked Cisco.

"Sure," said Caitlin as Cisco began to leave. Taking one last glance at her son Caitlin made her way out.

Looking down at the pile of lists in his hands Henry sighed. It was gonna be a long day.

STAR LABS

Since the morning Henry has been trying to complete the many tasks on the list his father provided him. He was so busy trying to get it done that he didn't even stop to eat. After finally finishing it he sighed in relief. But his relief was cut short as Cisco and Harry began to order him around. Watching from the side Caitlin couldn't help but shake her head as they ordered her son around like some slave.

"You guys can give him a break from time to time," growled Caitlin.

"But Barry said-" began Cisco.

"I don't care what Barry said!" yelled Caitlin cutting him off. "He's my son too," said Caitlin walking over towards Henry with a glass of water in hand.

"It's alright mom. I'm fine," said Henry trying to catch his breath.

"No you're not. You're wearing yourself out," scowled Caitlin, handing him the glass of water before pushing some of the damp hair back and out of his face.

"I'm fine," assured Henry gulping down the glass of water.

Sighing Caitlin lifted Henry's head up so he was looking at her. "You know you can just stop. You don't have to do this," pleaded Caitlin just wanting him to know he doesn't have to continue with Barry's shenanigan.

"I know," sighed Henry, "But then I'll be proving him that he's right all along," said Henry knowing that he had to do this to prove his father wrong.

Gazing into her son's blue-green eyes Caitlin couldn't help but sigh. He was so much like his father. "You know you're just as hard headed as him," commented Caitlin.

"What can I say," shrugged Henry. "Like father, like son," smirked Henry as his mother rubbed his hair fondly.

"Alright, go at it tiger," teased Caitlin as Henry continued his task.

Flashing into the Cortex Barry came to a stop. "Hey guys," he waved at Cisco and Harry as his son sped around the Cortex gathering things.

"How's it going?" asked Barry, walking over towards Caitlin.

"Perfect! He's really good at multitasking. Managed to grab my pen before it fell off the desk and my pop tart as it popped up in record time," praised Cisco continuing his work as Ralph joined him.

"See, I told you it was a good idea," said Barry elbowing Caitlin.

Looking at him Caitlin frowned at Barry. "You're just so ignorant to see what is really happening in front of your eyes," scowled Caitlin brushing past him. Watching her walk away Barry rolled his eyes. She's just mad that I was right.

Suddenly the alarm went off in the Cortex notifying the team of a break in. In a blink of an eye Barry grabbed his suit before making his way out. After sulking around at home for a while Nora made her way into the Cortex.

"Hey guys," she waved trudging in.

"Hey," replied Cisco and Ralph waving back as Harry rolled his eyes at the former speedster.

Looking around Nora watched as a flash of yellow and blue dashed across the Cortex. "Umm.. what is he doing?" asked Nora pointing at her brother's rapid figure.

"Oh Barry made a deal with Henry that he has to do everything we say if he wants to join him on the field," answered Ralph.

"Really? Anything we say?" asked Nora for confirmation.

"Yup," nodded Ralph.

"Interesting," smirked Nora.

"Ohh Henry! Can you get me some Pad Thai from Pad Thai Thip Samai (restaurant in Thailand)," said Nora. Since she couldn't use her speed she might as well use this little predicament to her advantage.

"Are you crazy?! Like hell I'm getting you that," snarled Henry coming to a stop.

"Uh,uh, uh. Barry said you have to do what EVERYONE says. That includes Nora," spoke up Ralph.

"Uh huh," nodded Nora smiling viciously.

Narrowing his eyes Henry stared at Nora. She knew exactly what she was doing. But he wasn't gonna let her get to him. So taking a deep breath Henry looked at her. Just another roadblock he kept telling himself.

"Fine," said Henry tilting his head to the side, cracking his neck. In a burst of wind, Henry ran to Thailand before running back into the Cortex. Retrieving Nora's order Henry threw it at her as Nora barely caught it.

"I'm only being nice to you for today. So don't get used to it," warned Henry brushing past her.

"Whatever," called out Nora rolling her eyes as Henry ran out of the Cortex to retrieve some parts for Cisco.

CORTEX

6:30 pm

As it was nearing the end of the day, Barry, Ralph, Iris, and Joe headed towards Star Labs. They came to check up on Henry as well as to assign him some new task. Rushing back and forth Henry was trying to get everyone's order as they all began to speak at the same time. Looking at the scene Caitlin shook her head.

"Henry!!! Where is my coffee?!" shouted Harry.

"Coming up," said Henry running by. "Here you go," said Henry, placing it in his hand.

"This is a ham sandwich not chicken," said Ralph spitting it out.

"Sorry," apologized Henry, running to fix the order.

"I ordered an inflatable bubble ball not inflatable volleyball," complained Cisco.

"I'll get it," said Henry, running back up to retrieve the correct package.

"Henry where are my donuts?!" questioned Joe behind a newspaper.

"Here you go," said Henry, grabbing a box of Joe's favorite donuts.

Running back and forth all day Henry began to get tired. He had to take off his jacket because he was getting hot. His t-shirt began to get drenched in sweat looking like a second layer of skin on his body.

"THIS IS DECAF?!" complained Harry spitting the coffee out.

"EWWWW! It's tofu! I hate tofu," exclaimed Ralph, dropping the sandwich and stepping back from it like it was a rat.

"This a bowling ball?!" cried Cisco holding the box up.

"Hey Henry, can I get a burger!" said Barry.

"OH! Me too," declared Nora raising her hand.

"These are plain. I wanted the jelly donuts," frowned Joe opening the box.

"Where is my dry cleaning?!" yelled Iris outraged.

"I'm sorry..I'll fix it...I'll get the right order...I promise," mumbled Henry as everyone began to talk back at the same time. They were all yelling at him. Feeling overwhelmed, Henry began to take a few steps back. Everyone began to walk towards him complaining that he was taking too long. Cornering him Henry breathing started to elevate. He started to hyperventilate. So closing his eyes Henry tried to block them out.

"STOP! STOP IT! ALL OF YOU!" shouted Henry silencing them.

"Jheez, can't you guys ever shut up!" complained Henry running a hand through his damp hair. "I have been working my ass off all day for you guys, and what did I get?! Nothing! Not even a simple thank you!" shouted Henry taking a deep breath.

"None of you guys even stopped to consider my well being except for mom," said Henry pointing to his mother who stood by the sideline watching the scene. "I am done being your little toy. I am done taking orders from all of you! I may have powers, but that doesn't make me invincible. I am just a human being like the rest of you. I have feelings too! I am no servant, and I am sure as hell aren't your slave!" yelled Henry. "So I am done with your stupid list," said Henry throwing the sheets of paper at them. "You can shove it up your ass for all I care," he growled before turning towards his father.

"And you," said Henry pointing at Barry as he began to walk towards him. "How could you do this to me. To your own kid! Your own son! How could you treat me like this! Don't I mean anything to you!" screamed Henry with tears in his eyes.

"You know I have faced countless villains and meta-humans before. All of which had used me, abused me, or broken me down in some shape or form. But this feeling I am feeling right now, tops all of it. Knowing that my OWN father had used and abused me for my own powers, really...hurts," said Henry looking at Barry as a tear ran down his face.

"All I have been doing since the moment I stepped foot into this timeline was to prove you wrong, dad. To prove to you that I was worthy enough to join you out on the field. But no matter how hard I try. No matter what I do. No matter how fast I run. I will never live up to your expectation. I will never be as fast as you. I will never be as great as The Flash," taunted Henry as Barry looked at him a loss for words.

"And that's got to hurt. Right dad?" asked Henry as tears started to well up in Barry's eyes. His heart broke at the sight of his son. He didn't mean to hurt him.

PARALLEL

Looking away Henry began to wipe away his tears furiously. "I am done with all of you. Call me when you really need me," said Henry, beginning to walk out of the Cortex.

"What about my dry cleaning?" complained Iris.

"Get it yourself," said Henry leaving the Cortex.

Scoffing Iris rolled her eyes at Henry's response. Standing where they were, the rest of Team Flash stood there with their heads bowed, disappointed in themselves (except for Iris, Nora, & Caitlin). They were selfish and did not take Henry's feeling into consideration when ordering him around. Looking at where her son one stood Caitlin was about to go follow him when Cisco stopped her.

"I got this," assured Cisco, leaving to go find Henry.

Nodding her head Caitlin turned to the rest of the team. Looking around she spotted Barry staring into the distance. He was furious with himself. How could he be so blind to see that he was hurting his son. How could he do that to him. What kind of father was he?

Clearing her throat Caitlin got everyone's attention. "Can I talk to you Barry. Now," ordered Caitlin leaving no room for him to argue back. Nodding his head Barry followed her into the Medical Wing.

-----------------------------------------

MEDICAL WING

Turning around Caitlin faced Barry.

"Is the part where you told me so?" asked Barry already knowing why she called him.

"Well I did, tell you so," admitted Caitlin with a tilt of her head.

"And you were right. I should have listened to you. It was wrong of me to use Henry like that, and now thanks to my idiotic idea, my own son hates me," cried Barry leaning back on a table as he covered his face with his hand.

Looking at Barry, Caitlin felt bad for him. So taking a couple of steps Caitlin approached him. "Henry doesn't hate you, Barry," said Caitlin, pulling Barry's hand away from his face. "He's just hurt. But you can fix that," said Caitlin looking into Barry's teary eyes.

"How?" asked Barry, willing to do anything to fix this.

"Give him a chance. Train him. Let him join you on the field. That's all he's been wanting to do," answered Caitlin pleading for her son with her eyes.

Staring into her hazel eyes, Barry knew she was right. "Ok," nodded Barry. "I'll give Henry a chance. I'll start training him first thing tomorrow morning," replied Barry as Caitlin raised an accusing eyebrow at him. "Actual training," assured Barry, deciding to do the thing he was supposed to do in the first place.

"Thank you," thanked Caitlin on behalf of herself and her son.

"It's the right thing to do. It's what I should have done in the beginning," explained Barry in all honesty.

"You got that right," nodded Caitlin causing them both to laugh.

Recovering back from his moment of happiness Barry stared at Caitlin. "Cait," called Barry, making Caitlin hum in response.

"Could you do me a favor?" asked Barry as Caitlin tilted her head in question. "Don't tell Henry about this yet. I wanna surprise him with it tomorrow," replied Barry.

"You have my word," nodded Caitlin as the two began to stare into each other's eyes. Green clashing with hazel brown. Subconsciously Barry took a step forward.

"I'm gonna go check on Henry," said Caitlin, breaking the moment. Nodding his head Barry watched as Caitlin left him alone. What just happened?  thought Barry. Why is that every time he's with Caitlin he feels more relaxed. Shaking his head Barry went into the Cortex to join the others.

--------------------------------------

LOUNGE

Entering the lounge Cisco was welcomed to the sight of multiple burger containers lying on the floor.

"What in the world?" replied Cisco accidentally tripping on a fries box.

A loud burp caught his attention as he spotted the speedster he was looking for lying on the couch with a milkshake in hand.

"Hello Uncle Cisco," greeted Henry. "Come to order me around some more," accused Henry taking a sip of his drink.

"No," sighed Cisco with his head down in shame. "I'm sorry about that. I didn't really take it in that I was abusing you for your powers," answered Cisco.

"You got that right," grumbled Henry, flipping through the channels.

Walking towards the speedster Cisco took a seat on the couch. "I'm really sorry Henry," apologized Cisco. "Please, talk to me," pleaded Cisco tired of the silent treatment.

Sighing Henry turned towards his uncle. He could see the guilt in his eyes. "There's nothing to talk about," sighed Henry.

"All I've ever wanted to do since I was a little kid was be a hero like mom and dad. To feel the wind on my face. To save people and make a difference. I was given these powers for a reason. Shouldn't I be able to use it?" said Henry, expressing himself to his uncle.

"You should," agreed Cisco.

"Yeah, well dad thinks otherwise. He doesn't want me out on the field," slumped Henry turning off the TV. "Sometimes I wish I could just go," sighed Henry playing with the empty cup in his hand. Staring into space Cisco got an idea.

"What if you could!" exclaimed Cisco.

"What do you mean?" asked Henry looking at him.

"I could help you! I could be your eyes and ears and you could be the feet," explained Cisco as Henry raised an eyebrow at him. "Look. Tomorrow morning you meet me here at Star Labs. I'll disable the alarm so Barry won't get any notification of any crime happening. While that's going on you will be out on the field in replace of him. And we can finally prove to him once and for all that you are worthy enough to be joining him on the field," explained Cisco.

"You would do that for me?" asked Henry with tears in his eyes,

"Of course! You are my favorite godson after," smiled Cisco.

"What about Nora?" teased Henry.

"Let's just say she gives me the creeps," grimaced Cisco causing Henry to laugh.

"Thank you!" squealed Henry wrapping his arms around his Uncle.

"Alright, alright," patted Cisco as they broke away from the hug. "Now clean this mess up before someone gets here. Jeez. It looks like you haven't eaten all day," commented Cisco beginning to help clean up.

"That's cause I haven't," replied Henry sheepishly.

"WHAT?!" exclaimed Cisco. "Oh ho! You should be glad that your mother is not her to scowl you," said Cisco shaking his head at the speedster. In a blink of an eye, Henry had cleaned up his mess leaving no evidence of the huge mess before.

"Done," smiled Henry in triumph.

"Great," smiled Cisco, throwing away the trash he collected. "Now make sure you don't tell anyone about this," warned Cisco, reminding Henry about their plans for tomorrow.

"You have my word," said Henry raising his hand. "Speedster honor," winked Henry.

"Come here you," said Cisco grabbing Henry before ruffling his hair playfully.

"Stop it Uncle Cisco," laughed Henry trying to escape his arms.

"What is going on here?" questioned Caitlin walking into the Lounge.

"Nothing," replied Cisco letting go of Henry. "Just catching up on old times," shrugged Cisco before making his way out.

"Oh...k," said Caitlin, not too convinced. "What was that about?" asked Caitlin, gesturing behind her at Cisco retreating figure.

"Nothing," assured Henry, walking towards her and embracing her in a hug.

"You ok?" asked Caitlin, comforting him.

"I will be," smiled Henry into her shirt.

"You wanna go home? You must be tired," said Caitlin pulling away from the hug before running a hand through his hair.

"Yeah," smiled Henry. And in a flash the mother and son duo left.
