Cake Blows Up In My Face
"Happy birthday, dummy," I heard someone whisper in my ear. I slightly open my eyes. The sun was rising, it stung my eyes. I turned to where the voice came from. "You know I'm not a morning person," I groaned. "Not my fault you dated an insomniac," Liam whispered in my ear while he ran his fingers in my hair. I sat up straight and stretched. Liam kissed my forehead which made me smile. "I would've woken you up at midnight but you looked peaceful," Liam said. "Were you staring at me sleep?" I joked. "Maybe," Liam smirked. We heard one of the campers groan and we stood still for a solid 2 seconds. "Get some sleep! We have new campers arriving and we gotta be hyped!" I whispered a bit too loudly. "Get some sleep you two," Olivia groaned. Liam rolled his eyes and kissed my cheek. "See you in a few hours, Princess."
The camp was over crowded with lost, new campers. They were all shy and carried a lot of bags as if they were moving in. As CIT, I had to stick by the counsellor's side, which is Olivia, at all times. I had to help and guide the campers to their cabins and give them their schedules. There were a lot of campers from ages 10-15. I felt a bit old around them. The ten year old looked so adorable but they were really loud. With their screeching voices. I grew tired. My legs and ears couldn't take it anymore. I bent down and placed my hands on my knees. I looked up and the clear blue sky. Why did it have to be a hot day. Olivia must've noticed me in the crowd and walked towards me. "Tired already?" Olivia chuckled. "Me? Nah! I could do this the whole day," I said as I wiped my forehead. "Really now?" Olivia smirked. "Well, I'm gonna need you to help those five campers over there to their cabins," Olivia pointed at a group of campers who didn't look older than 14 years of age. I looked up at Olivia, who still had a smirk displayed on her face. "Why me?" I asked. "Because we voted for you to be the glorious CIT. Don't worry. You only gotta do this and you can go and relax. It's your birthday after all." Olivia patted my back and winked at me before she left to go talk to one of the Camp Directors who were supervising. I took a deep breath before heading the the group of new campers I was assigned to. "Hi there! I'm Blaire Levesque, the CIT of the Wolf Cabin. How can I be of assistance?" I asked the new campers. "Did you say Wolf Cabin?" One of them asked. She had blonde curls and freckles plastered across her face. I nodded. "Great! That's where we're going!" She squealed, making my ear drum pop. "You're all going there?" I asked. Only 2 out of the four campers nodded. "Okay. Where are the others going?" I asked. "Falcon Cabin," the boy with brown shaggy hair replied. "How about I give you a tour of the camp before I show you to your cabins?" I beamed but they all shook their heads besides the girl with the freckles. I sighed thinking that this was going to be a long day. "Okaaayy. How about you stay here while I take these campers to their cabin?" I suggested to the little girl. She nodded. "Gladly!" She smiled, revealing her sparkling white teeth. "And you aren't afraid to stay here alone?" I asked. I didn't want to lose a camper on my first day. "Nope. I'm here with my cousin," the girl point to a nearby tree. I furrowed my brows and looked at the girl again. "Your cousin is a tree?" I asked, causing for the girl to giggle. "Nooo, silly! He's standing behind the tree," she pointed out, which made much more sense. One of the campers that were standing behind me cleared their throats. "Can we get going already?" They asked. "Aren't you the jolly one," I grumbled. The girl with freckles giggled. I smiled at her before ruffling her hair. I looked at the tree again, hoping to see a glance of her cousin. "Well then, let's get a move on, shall we?"
Turns out those new campers were actually spoilt brats. Shocker. And they're really whiny. Good thing they weren't in my cabin. I walked back to where I left the little girl and she wasn't there. I looked around a couple of times trying to find her. I looked at the tree and started walking towards at. When I got close to it, I start to walk slowly. I checked behind the tree and found no one buy a little pocket knife on the floor. That was a bit strange. Wonder who it came from. I crouched down a picked it up. I observed it's features. It looked old but it was still useful. I shoved the pocket knife in my jacket pocket before heading to the swarm of new campers.
As usual, we all had to gather at the mess hall to welcome the new campers. Samantha and the other camp directors sat at the huge table up front so we could see them well. The mess hall was cleaner than usual, with its beautiful chandeliers swinging above our heads. We all sat according to our cabins. By the Wolf table, I saw the freckled girl sitting nervously glancing at everyone. When she saw me, she grinned, and by force of nature, I did the same. I walked over and say next to her. "There you are," I shouted over the loudness of the campers. "Funny. I was looking for you too," the freckled girl smiled softly. "So where's your cousin?" I asked, looking around to spot him. "He's outside again," she said, also looking around in search for him. "Why is he outside?" I asked. "He's looking for his pocket knife," she said. As soon as those words escaped her mouth, she quickly covered it as if she wasn't supposed to mention and the knife. "What's the matter?" I asked her. My hand was in my pocket, touching the pocket knife gently. "I don't think Bellamy who like any one to know about that. Are you going to take it away from him?" She gave me the cute puppy eyes. Basically I have it but does that mean I took it away from him. I shook my head. "No I won't. As long as he doesn't stab someone's eye out," I winked, and the freckled girl laughed. "I didn't get your name," I said. "It's Jaelynn," she replied. "Nice to meet you," I said. I looked at the entrance and saw Liam walking in. "See ya," I said before leaving Jaelynn to go to Liam. Liam kissed my nose and pulled me into a hug. "I missed you, dummy," he whispered in my ear. "It's only been a few hours," I giggled. Liam shrugged and entwined his pinky finger with mine as we walked to our table. "Alright alright. That's quite enough noise for today!" Samantha, one of the camp directors, said in the microphone. "I'd like to start off by welcoming the new campers to our lovely Camp," she said. I looked around to see all the new faces. I didn't want to listen to Samantha's boring speech so I do traced myself by counting all the new campers. Then one of them caught my eye. He was standing by the entrance as if he's just here because he had to. But most of us don't want to be here. He wore a black leather jacket, given to how hot it is. He had dark hair, darker than Olivia's. He looked a bit taller than me and a bit older. What amazed me was his eyes. They look ghostly as if he was dead. He stood there with a grim expression listening to Samantha. When our eyes met, I averted my gaze immediately, trying not to make things awkward. Which I failed to do. Something about him wasn't right. His aura was different. It was- "Blaire Levesque!" Samantha said a bit too loudly making me flinch. "I didn't do it!" I shouted. Half of the campers started to laugh. Even though I was far away from Samantha, I could see her left eye twitching. "I meant to say that, we wish you a happy birthday," Samantha said a bit slower. Well that made more sense, I suppose. A minute later, one of the chefs came in with a huge platter and it was covered. He places it on our table and opened it. It was a three tiered cake with pink frosting. It was written Happy birthday Blaire Levesque with a blue frosting and a picture of a wolf beneath it. 12 June was also frosted onto the cake as if I don't know when's my birthday. The chef lit the candles and walked away grumbling that he doesn't get paid enough to do this. "We don't usually do these type of things but since it was requested, I might as well," Samantha said. I looked at everyone who was on our table. They all grinned at me, showing that they all played a part. Liam squeezed my hand and smiled warmly. Ever since we started dating, he smiled more often. Which was adorable! Everyone sang the happy birthday song and was told to blow the candles out. I held my breath for a second the blew all of them out besides one. I blew at it again but it didn't go out. "What the heck," I mumbled. A few seconds later, the cake blew in my face and on everyone around me. I heard giggling coming from Zach and Ethan. Of course they'd do something like this. "Ethan! Zach!" I yelled. "It was our just and cracker," Ethan said, trying to control his laughter. I looked outside and it started to drizzle, the weather corresponding with my emotions. I stood up and wiped the cake away from my face and threw some at Zach when he wasn't noticing. "Food fight!" Ethan shouted. "Not again!" Samantha said. But no one listen to her. Everyone was throwing food everywhere. I felt someone tugging my jacket behind me. I turned around and saw Jaelynn grinning crazily. "I have a feeling that I'm going to enjoy this place!" She shouted over the noise. I grinned at her then looked at the entrance. The boy smirked before leaving. I knew something about him was off. And I had to get to the bottom of it.
