Chapter 34

"Just like old time, eh?" I said as Durin cut the thread.

"Oh yeah, I sure missed stitching you up."

"Hey," I pointed at my arm. "This one was your fault."

"Did I mention I was sorry?"

Jared placed his hands on my shoulders and I waved Durin off. I'd been shot so many times I didn't really care who had done it anymore. I was alive, and he was part of the reason for that.

"I've got some business to attend to." I hopped off the counter and grabbed my dagger and one of the guns.

"Do you want anyone to go with you?" Jared asked.

I was about to say no, that I wanted to go alone, but then I thought better. "Isaac, can you get that serum? The one they used on me?"

"Sure can."

"Get that please and meet me in there."

I went to the other room where we had locked both of the Klarkes up. The same room they'd kept me, and where Thomas had been. There were two folders sitting on the table. Their files from within The Torch and The Organization.

"Jackalyn and Anthony," I read from the tabs. Finally, I knew their actual names. "Have you both had time to get acquainted with your cells? Yours is pretty special, Anthony." I gestured around it with the dagger.

"If you see those spots on the ground, they still haven't been cleaned from the last resident," I tsked. "It's the very cell where you turned me into an interrogator...or rather torturer. I had to learn on the go, but I had plenty of practice."

"Oh cut the crap, kid," he spat.

"What crap?"

I walked closer to Jackalyn and made a quick motion toward her in jest. She flinched and I laughed.

"Jackalyn here has known me for five years now. She knows to be afraid of me, and she didn't even get to see what I became from my time here." I made my way back to him. "How about we just cut straight to the chase?" I thrust my dagger as deep into his leg as I could, pushing it all the way to the hilt.

Anthony screamed so loud I thought my ear drums were going to burst. "Some kid I am now, huh?"

"Is that all you got?" He sneered.

"Why do they always have to act like tough guys?" I tipped my head to each side, cracking my neck. "Fine." I pulled the dagger out slowly, listening to his hissing breath and speared his other leg. The cry wasn't as loud, but it was still there.

"Don't worry though, you'll be okay in no time." I knew Isaac was going to be in the room in just a couple minutes, so I went over to Jackalyn sitting quietly in her chair.

"Oh, Jackie. How about I share some of what I've learned from from Anthony over there, and from the rest of you. What do you say?"

I made a cut in the same places I'd been marked up for the ceremony; along both arms, the gut, and the necks. The blood started to flow fast. She kept her eyes straight forward the whole time, not making a single sound.

"Wow. It's like a river!" I cleaned the blade off with a rag.

The door beeped, and Isaac entered, a handful of needles ready to go.

"Here we are. We can't let the fun end just yet!"

I grabbed one of the syringes from Isaac and slid it into Anthony's arm, pushing the plunger down.

"There we are."

I watched as both wounds stitched back together, imitating the healing process of the werewolf. I hadn't been able to actually study it last time. The science of it fascinated me, and for a moment I thought of Sarah and the work she wanted to do. If it was possible to create this serum, then it must be possible to separate whatever it was that created werewolves and reverse it. I didn't even know if Sarah had made it out of there, or the rest of my family for that matter.

When the wounds were healed I smiled. "I sure am glad some of that is still left in you." I punched him in the eye hard. His head flew back before lolling to the side. He was unconscious.

"You see, Jackie. Right here," I took another syringe from Isaac, "we have a serum that's a lot like werewolf healing. I-"

"I know," she said, her voice flat.

"Pardon?"

"I know what it is. We were the ones to develop it in the United States. They only got access to it through us."

"So, tell me. How'd you get it?"

"My father tested on werewolves." Her eyes met mine in a challenge.

I knew what she wasn't saying. It hadn't been happy testing, or testing on subjects who'd willingly gone in. It had been underground testing. The kind that hadn't been pleasant at all for the werewolf.

Her blood pooled on the ground and I was tempted to let it keep draining. Let her bleed out. But I knew I couldn't let her go that easily. I checked the clock. It had been just over five minutes. three to eight more, and she would be dead. I stuck the needle in her arm and pressed down, releasing the serum into her bloodstream. The wounds would stitch up, but she would still be weakened from the blood loss. Unless the serum also recreated the blood platelets.

"Can you get Jared, please. Quick. I want this done before he wakes back up."

Isaac went out the door, leaving the rest of the serum on the table. Not even a minute later, Jared came in.

"Bite him."

"What?" Both Jackalyn and Jared asked.

"Bite. Him."

"Electra, I don't know about-"

"Jared, just do it! After everything he's done, he deserves it. Everything he did to me, to you, to others we don't even know about. For god sake, he shot a defenseless child right in front of my damn eyes. Bite him now!"

I took a deep breath and turned to face him. Putting my hands on his cheeks, I looked into his eyes. "I know how you feel about this, but please trust me. If anyone deserves it, it's him."

Jared's eyes shifted between brown and yellow and back. His wolf was close to the surface, warring between what to do. He knew just as well as I did that man deserved the bite.

He nodded once and stalked over to Anthony still passed out.

"No, you can't do that! Please," Jackalyn pleaded.

"Why not?" I asked. "Give me one good reason."

"Just please don't do it. I beg you."

"What is he to you?" I looked at her suspiciously. "A cousin? Uncle? Nephew, maybe?"

Jared's claws and teeth slid out, his eyes fully yellow.

"He's my brother! Please don't."

"I knew that accent wasn't right. There was just something off."

"Please just don't do this."

"Since you asked so nicely... Jared, do it."

"No!" Jackalyn screamed as Jared's teeth dug into Anthony's forearm. A place he would always see it and be reminded, as if what he would be wouldn't be reminder enough.

Almost as soon as Jared took his mouth off, the bite was healing. As the last of it disappeared, turning into a scar covered in blood, Anthony woke up.

"Wha-what in the world?"

"Oh, you like your new scar? I had Jared here give you another one. Another to add to your battle wounds."

Anthony's eyes went wide and panic and fear set in.

"No, no, no. What is this? No. What is it?"

"A werewolf bite," I said cocking my head to the side. "I thought that was fairly clear. And to answer your second question," I leaned over, getting closer. "A werewolf bite," I whispered.

"No!" He growled. The anger sparked the lurking beast.

Anthony's eyes shifted color, and the fangs broke loose in his mouth. It was as if the feeling solidified it.

"It's a bit overwhelming at first, I know," Jared said.

"Kill me. Kill me right now, please." The words were garbled over his new teeth.

"Now why would I do that?"

"To spare me! Just do it!"

"I don't think so."

Anthony used all of his new strength to lunge at me, fangs bared, straight into my dagger. I pushed back until his chair was back on the ground, the dagger low in is stomach. The longer he sat there, the more twisted his face became with the pain of the silver, until he couldn't bear it any longer.

I jerked the blade out, giving him temporary relief.

I then turned to Jackalyn and wasted no more time. I was done with both of them. I'd had my fun, and now I was bored. I plunged the dagger higher in her abdomen.

"See right here, I've made sure to miss everything vital. Just far enough away from everything."

She choked on the pain.

"Now if I do this," I tilted the hilt down so the blade went up, "well, you feel that? That was slicing the lung. And that," I pushed down more. "That was me piercing it. So now when I do this," I pushed the hilt up, "it will start filling with fluid. Particularly, your blood. You all did something right. You sure taught us our anatomy well." I wiggled the blade up and down as I pulled it out, twisting it to the side half way through.

"New werewolves have little control, isn't that right Jared?"

"That's right. It's just this consuming rage that makes you want to destroy everything."

"Yeah. It's also a killer instinct, isn't it?"

"Yup."

"Right. So if there was a wounded animal in what they would think is their territory?"

"Oh, the wolf would most likely kill and eat it."

Jackalyn's eyes went wide as the blood poured from her abdomen.

"Okay. Well I think our work here is done. Oh wait." I unbound Anthony as he writhed in pain. "Now our work is done."

Pressing the alarm after we closed the door, Jared and I collected the other two and we left. Whatever happened, happened. I didn't want to watch, and I didn't feel like caring. I knew there was no way for them to get out.

"What are we going to do now?" Isaac asked.

"Well, I would suggest you find Steele. She's going to need help, and I think you may have a promotion in your future. We need to go back home and rebuild from the ground up. Hopefully we can look forward to communication between branches in the future."

"I'd like that."

I gave Isaac a hug before we went separate ways. It was going to be a long flight back to the United States.

"Electra Jaeger and Jared Rolten, the President will see you now," a woman said.

Jared tensed beside me.

"Just relax." I grabbed his hand and held it tightly. "If he doesn't already know, you will be evidence enough. We just have to talk to him and get him to see our way. It has worked in other countries."

He gave me a look like he didn't believe me. I didn't blame him. I wasn't the one who would be taken as the threat. Though if the President knew my record, he would be more scared of me than Jared.

"We can do this. Together. Just like we've done everything else." I kissed him once on the lips.

"Together," he said.

We stood and made our way to the President of the United States.
