Chapter 28

I looked back to the werewolves, the one next to Jared had dropped to the ground and the rest were looking our way. I knew it was impossible for Jared to have not known I was there.

I stepped out from my hiding place and our eyes connected. He couldn't really be here. This had to be some sort of dream. Nightmare, really. This was probably one of my top ten nightmares.

The werewolves rushed toward us. Isaac and I were still on our own, the footsteps faster now after hearing the gun shot. Isaac tossed another gun my way, and I held them both out, firing at the wolves rushing toward us.

They're evil. They're evil. Don't worry about shooting them. I had to repeat the words over and over to keep firing into the rushing bodies.

But not Jared, the voice said back. He couldn't be. There was no way he would join up with them. It was impossible.

One of the bodies slammed into me. This one was still alive. Damn.

His hands grabbed at me, claws sliding out further with each slash at my leather covered arms. I twisted my head and one of his clawed fingers hooked onto the ear piece, tearing it out. His hand went down, crushing it.

"Thanks," I said as I wedged the gun between us and shot straight into his chest. The bullet went straight through, blood and pieces of flesh flying into the air before coming straight back down onto my face.

I sat up. There was a look of horror on Jared's face.

"Get out of here now. There are hundreds of hunters coming right here. You'll get yourself caught. Get out now, or you're going to have to pretend to be one." I held the gun out, giving Jared the option to take it. If he did, then I knew he wasn't one of them. If he ran, it was still a slim chance he would make it past the hunters.

I didn't care what side he was on. He couldn't be killed by them.

He shook his head and turned. He was fast, faster than I really knew. We'd ran away together once, but he'd been slowing himself down for me. Now he was unrestricted. It was amazing to watch, but I didn't have the chance. A weight hit me from the side, and claws scraped against my side. I just had to hope that he found a way to get around the hunters and away. Please.

The woman was a nasty fighter. Hair puller, face scratcher. She was going full out.

One of her fists wrapped in my hair and she slammed my head into the ground. Dirt and leaves filled my mouth. I dropped one of the guns and went for the dagger stashed at my side. I swung my arm back and got her in the abdomen.

The woman screamed and moved enough for me to get out from under her. I stood, turned, and kicked up, my foot connecting with her jaw. The blood turned her blue shirt purple, and she scrambled back to a sitting position. She was in no mind to fight at her best. She couldn't, not when the wound had been inflicted with silver. It was a wound just like it would be for me. I lifted the gun in my other hand and gave her a mercy shot right between the eyes.

I looked around and the other hunters were starting to file in, but so were the rest of the werewolves. It was an all out war.

Something rushed at me from the side, and I turned just in time for a fist to connect with my face. I flew back to the ground and had to shake the spots from my eyes. A man stalked forward, leaning over me, claws snapping down. I wiped a hand across my mouth and saw the red. I licked the rest of the blood from my lip and smiled, shaking my head.

He pounced, and I threw my legs up and into his chest. It may have hurt me more than it hurt him, it felt like I broke something.

He scrounged around, and I felt his nails slice my pants. "Oh no you don't!" No nails are digging into my skin!

I kicked at his face and he growled loudly. He wanted to go straight for my throat now. He lunged, and my legs wrapped around his neck, pulling his head up. I took the gun to the back of his head and fired. Pieces of skull and brain flew into the air...and leaked out onto my pants. I felt a reflexive gag coming.

A child growled and ran at me, he looked to be seven. Not a child, anything but a child. He didn't even know what he was doing, there was still a chance he could be helped. I had to handle this just right.

I could still feel Jared's presence somewhere. He was watching me. Whether it was to see how many I killed, or to make sure I didn't get hurt, I wasn't sure.

The child got closer and closer. When he was within reach, I grabbed one of his legs and one of his arms and picked him up.

"Get. The Hell. Out. Of here!" I shouted as I swung the child around until his little body slammed into the tree behind me. The force was enough to knock him out cold. I pressed my fingers to his neck, feeling the pulse there. He was still alive, and hopefully we could take him back with us and help him.

"My baby!" A woman shouted.

I didn't even have the chance to survey the area. I had no idea what the carnage looked like, I just hoped it was more of their people down than ours. But I was done.

The woman ran at me, and I let her. I gripped the dagger tightly in my hand, bringing it up only when I knew it would sink right into her stomach. A gurgled gasp came from her mouth and I raised my gun up to her head to put her out of her misery.

Nothing else came at me. At least not right then. I finally had the chance to look around. A few of our people were down, some I could tell were still alive, others I wasn't so sure. Isaac leaned against a tree, blood in his hair. I wasn't sure if it was his or someone else's. I hoped for the latter. It was complete chaos, but it was dwindling down. There were finally more of our men than theirs. Maybe I could just sit the rest of it out.

Behind me, a shot rang out and the pain tore through my back and stomach. I looked down. I couldn't see the red, but I could feel the sticky warmth of the blood as it came out, and I could see the hole in the fabric. It had gone clean through. It hadn't done as much damage as my shots, it hadn't been close enough, but it had done plenty.

I fell to my knees and my ears rang. I tried to remember all I could about gunshot wounds. It wasn't often we had to treat them though, our opponents rarely used guns. It was out though, so it didn't matter how I fell, well, not as much as it would have if it had still been inside.

I turned just enough to see the person who had shot me. A little girl crouched on the ground. In her hands was the gun I had dropped. I never left my weapons laying around like that. How could I have been so careless.

"Jacobson!" The voice sounded far off with the ringing in my ears, but I knew it was Isaac.

The girl's head jerked backward and her body fell to the ground. He'd shot her.

I put my hand over the wound. I had to stop the bleeding. I had to do something. I had to...

My thoughts were coming slower, a fog clouding over. My body became heavier and I couldn't stay kneeling. My body fell to the side and hands were on me, rolling me onto my back.

Fighting still went on around us. Either it was almost over though, or my hearing was diminishing.

Isaac's face hovered over mine, his hair plastered to his forehead with blood, his eyes searching my face. They looked so much like my own, the ones hidden behind the damn contacts. Had he been surprised to see them that day? Wait, that was just this morning.

I shook my head trying to focus, but it wasn't worth it. It just made everything hurt. I hoped Jared had listened when I screamed. I hope he had left and he wasn't waiting by, watching. Or maybe he was, and he was happy, thinking I would finally be gone, no longer a problem for him.

"It went all the way through," I barely got out.

"Shit. That means it's bleeding from both sides."

A ringing took up in my ears. I was dying. This was it.

Klarke's face appeared over mine, and I wished it would have been anyone but him. In that moment, with those steely gray eyes, it was just like the Klarke from back home. As if it had been his bullet that went through me just like it had been hers.

"Get her back to the van and back to headquarters as soon as possible," he snapped.

"The kid," I managed to choke out.

"What is it?" Isaac asked.

"The kid." I managed to make my arm point toward the kid I'd knocked out. "He's just out. He's young, didn't know any better. Please." I coughed and my body shook. "Please can we help him out." My eyes blinked and it was getting hard for them to stay open. Each blink harder to open.

"I'll help him out," Klarke hissed.

A shot rang out and I saw the hole tear open in the kid's skull. It was the last thing I saw before my eyes closed and wouldn't open.
