Chapter 20

Video above is a song that's supposed to go with the second half of the chapter (AKA when Electra/Eliza gets home and talks to Jared). Hope you like the chapter.

*****

A woman I'd never seen was in the infirmary. She was probably the only other person here, which meant she hadn't been out in the field. It shouldn't seem surprising they would have a designated nurse, or doctor, or whatever her title was, and it should be obvious they would have her here on an evening they'd planned to go after an entire pack. Though one would think with that logic they would have more.

"She needs a full examination. Possible concussion, and she needs to be looked over for any marks by werewolf," Isaac said as he helped me to sit down.

The woman put latex gloves on and made her way around a rolling tray. She looked up at Isaac and that one moment of eye contact told him everything. Go.

"I'll be outside if you need anything."

"All right. Do you think you can stand on your own?"

"Probably. I can try at least."

"Okay, because I need you to strip down."

"Whoa there, Doc. Shouldn't you take me to dinner first or something?"

"You need to be assessed for any markings. I can't do that very well if you're fully clothed."

"It's always straight to business with you people." I huffed and put my feet on the ground. The world took one lap in my head and I steadied myself on the examining chair.

I started taking my clothes off, having to peel off layer by layer. The blood had become tacky, causing it to stick to my body. Red smears stayed behind on my skin, the only visual of what I'd done. Another reason I liked to wear black. Blood wasn't visible.

Completely exposed, I wasn't really sure what to do. I wanted to cover myself, but that seemed a bit out of the question.

"The name is Brax by the way," the woman said as her cold hands started to run over my body.

I jumped back, nearly falling over.

"I'm sorry, but with this much blood, I'm double checking which marks are healed to see if there are any fresh ones."

I stood still, tolerating her roaming hands with a clenched jaw. I never liked doctors, and Org doctors were even worse. Nosey little...

"You have a lot of scars. How long did you say you've been doing this?"

"I didn't." My back went rigid, though I knew being completely exposed and her at my back put me at a disadvantage.

Silence was the only thing that came from Brax, silence and the feel of her hands roaming down my legs.

She made her way back up, moved the hair at my neck to look at the back of my head, and then made her way around.

"What's this?" She asked.

My heart jumped when her finger touched my skin. I knew exactly what she was talking about, and I'd been a fool to let her do this examination. I should have insisted on seeing if I had a concussion only.

"I was attacked by a vampire a while ago. He'd managed to sink fang in, but I'd been able to kill him before anything too bad happened."

"That's funny," she looked closer at the mark Jared had left behind on my skin. "The width would lead me to believe that it was a werewolf."

"Trust me, I remember everything about the night it happened. It was a vampire."

"Vampires in California? I wouldn't think there would be many of those." Brax tilted her head to the side.

"Not many, but there are some, and the ones that are there are pretty vicious. Trust me, it wasn't a werewolf. If it had been I wouldn't be able to do this," I picked the silver dagger up and put the blade in my palm. "Pure silver, and it doesn't burn my flesh."

That had apparently been enough to satisfy her.

"Well, you have tons of scarring, but I don't see any new markings. You can put your clothes back on for the second part of the examination."

Gladly, I slipped them back on, cringing slightly at the feel of the hardening fabric. I didn't have a change of clothes, and I was covered in another person's blood. I couldn't focus on that part now. If I focused on that, and how I broke my promise, I wouldn't be able to do what I needed to do to get out of there.

"Look. There's a ninety percent chance I have a concussion. All I want to do is sleep, I feel nauseous, and I have the world's worst headache. Do we really need to do this?"

Brax shined a light into my eyes without warning. I squinted and pulled back, the movement once again sending my head spinning.

"Your pupils aren't reacting to the light either. Definitely a concussion. You'll need to-"

"Make sure I wake up or have someone wake me up every couple hours so I don't fall into a coma or whatever. I know. If anything worsens I should come back here straight away."

"How many concussions have you had?" Brax asked.

"Honestly? I've lost count. I can think straight through them though. That's good, right?"

"We can hope. You are definitely something else, Jacobson. Rest up and take it easy, you're free to go."

As if he'd been listening through the door, Isaac opened it up and helped me out.

"You need a ride back home?"

"If you could, that would be great." I was able to walk on my own, but I was a bit slowed compared.

We made the walk to his car silently, lost in our own thoughts. We were nearly to my new place when Isaac decided to speak up.

"I may know some people that can help you. The only problem, is that they are on Klarke's radar."

"That would be a huge problem, what with Klarke apparently not playing by the same rules as the rest of The Torch."

"But they also have connections back to the U.S." He paused for a moment. "I'd wager that there are groups like what you're looking for back there as well."

"Well are you going to tell me who this person, or people are?"

"The only name I have is Layke. I think it's their leader. You can find them in the next town over."

"Like I'll have time to make it to the next town. I barely have time for sleeping."

"Klarke gave you the rest of the week off. Perks of doing a good job, and nearly getting yourself killed."

"Wow, who knew the job came with so many benefits." I rolled my eyes and Isaac stopped the car. I looked at the place that had become my new home. Gifted by The Torch. I knew I needed to be careful, because a gift like that could just as easily be taken away. Not to mention, they could do much worse.

"Then I guess I'll see you on Monday." I gave Isaac a small wave and he tipped his head. Making my way up to the door, Isaac waited until he saw me go inside. I suppose he wanted to make sure I didn't pass out just outside or something.

When the door closed behind me, I let out a long sigh. My neck, back, and head were sore, not just from my skull being slammed into the ground, but from everything I'd been through the whole day. I was finally within the walls of sanctuary. I was safe.

"El, is that you?" Jared made his way toward me, stopping short when I came in sight. His nostrils flared like he was smelling something bad in the air. "Blood."

"It's not mine." My throat constricted. I knew facing him would be difficult, but I could barely breathe. I had to tell him that I'd failed in getting Thomas out. I couldn't tell him though. I didn't know how.

I pushed past him, making my way to the bedroom, and through to the bathroom.

"Electra come back out here please. Talk to me." I couldn't tell what he was feeling, probably because he didn't even know what he was feeling. I'd come home soaked in blood, dried blood now, that wasn't even my own.

"I don't know what to say," I whispered, looking out at him from the doorway of the bathroom.

"Come here." He held his hand out, and I couldn't just turn away.

I stood in front of him, looking down, but unable to make eye contact.

Jared took another deep breath in, and i knew he was smelling. He was getting the scent that was on me, and he would soon know it was...

"A werewolf." His brows crinkled and I bit my lip. "Who?"

"Can I please just take a shower and change?" I asked quietly.

Jared grabbed both of my hands, encircling my wrists. His skin was hot against mine, and I wanted to pull back, I tried to pull back, but his grip was too strong.

"Who is it, Electra?" It was the sound of warning. He didn't want to play any games. He didn't want to beat around the bush.

I felt the break coming from me again, a breakdown similar to when I was at Trevor's. Jared had been right from the beginning. I never should have done this, any of this. Now I was just like the people I'd fled from, turning into that huntress all over again.

"It's Thomas'. I killed him."

Jared dropped my hands and I took a small step back. If I couldn't look at him before, there was no possible way I could meet his eyes now.

"You were supposed to get him out of there."

"I wanted to. I really did. I tried to think of any way possible, but we were completely surrounded. He was desperate, so desperate. He came after me and I just...I just did it."

"He attacked you?"

"He gave us outdated information and Klarke gave me the order to eliminate him. He instigated it. He wanted me to kill him."

"Why didn't you get him out of there?" Jared stood up now. "You had all this time, and you just sat on your hands. You could have at least tried something."

"I wanted to, but I couldn't just walk out with a high profile prisoner. They would have noticed something like that, and then I'd be dead too."

"You just had to get yourself involved with those hunters again. You couldn't just leave well enough alone. I get that you couldn't sit by while there were creatures out there killing people, Electra, but we could have handled it together. You wanted to go off with those humans though, those living, breathing weapons. You just can't get enough of it."

"Jared, that's not-"

"That's exactly what it is. Four years and you're completely hooked. You don't know any other way of life anymore, because the person you were before you were a hunter is completely gone. You kill. You're lethal. You are a dangerous weapon to anyone who comes within reach of you."

"He knew what you were though, Jared. He knew you were a werewolf. What if he gave that information to others? What if he wasn't really as separated from that pack as you believe and they came after you? Or what if he got out and told The Torch about you, or about us? He was a threat."

"So he was just a loose end? One that you had no problem getting rid of because of potential problems down the line? Didn't we say we would cross that bridge if we got there?"

"Well I came up to many bridges today, Jared, and the only way to stop them from burning down was with the end of Thomas' life. I didn't want to do it, but I had to. It just happened to fix some of our other problems too."

"You always take the easy way out, Electra." Jared shook his head and turned away from me.

"You think that was easy? To think of every way to save a person, realize they would all fail and end up with more dead then just taking care of the problem at hand. That's easy?"

"Hasn't killing always been easy for you? You've been detached for so long that it must come naturally."

"I should have never agreed to let you go in there. I should have stopped you that night we went after the ghoul." He paused and turned back around to look at me.

My heart was pounding inside my chest. I knew he could hear it, there was no way he couldn't. I felt like my heart was one poke away from shattering. I didn't want to fight with Jared. I wanted him to hold me, to tell me that everything was going to be okay; that we were going to be okay. We were mates, we were supposed to make it through anything, right?

"Have you even changed at all?" The wolf danced behind the brown depths of his eyes, and he looked as if he were looking at a stranger.

That was the poke, the one my heart couldn't handle.

"If I hadn't changed, I wouldn't have spent another moment thinking about that damn wolf. I wouldn't have had to wait until he was going in for the kill before I gutted him. I wouldn't have had any problem doing exactly what Klarke said."

Jared swallowed hard at the gory details. "And yet you still did it. We hadn't even been here long before you decided to join that group. You know what hunters do, what they're capable of, and yet you went in willingly. It was a stupid idea, but you told me it wouldn't be for long. It was longer than necessary, and now you've done this.

"I'd though I had my Eliza, my Electra, but she was taken away from me all too soon and turned back into Electra Jaeger, supernatural assassin. They point, and you kill."

"Jared," my voice cracked and the first tear broke free, sliding down my cheek.

He tipped his head back, looking at the ceiling. "Is this some twisted joke to you up there? Is this what you wanted to see? First you decide to have one of your minions give me the bite, then pair me up with someone that can't feel past her fingertips?" When he looked back down, his eyes had fully changed.

"I'm done with this sick joke. If you'd really changed, then I could deal with your past. Your past is still very much a part of your present though, and that's something I don't want any part of."

Jared started to walk away, and my hand reached out, grabbing his arm.

"No, please. Jared."

A growl ripped through him, loud and low as he yanked his arm free. Even with all that rage inside, with his fangs and claws ready to go, he didn't lay a single finger on me, and I think that hurt more than if he had. It left me with nothing as he walked out of the room, and then out of the house.

I'd needed him. I'd needed his reassurance, and I was left with nothing but an empty feeling inside. The question from the beginning was if I'd be able to get over my hesitation with what he was, if I was going to be the one to walk away and never look back. I'd never dreamed Jared would be the one to walk away from me. I never thought he saw it as an option.

"I love you," I whispered.

I dropped to my knees, curling in on myself. That was when the tears really started to fall.

"I thought you loved me."
