Chapter 14 - Find Myself
I'd been sworn to secrecy by Klarke when I'd left the room the day before. He'd said to keep everything between the few people who already knew what was going on. None of those people were Steele. That had worried me.
I hadn't done anything to Thomas, I'd barely been able to meet his gaze. In fact, I had turned right around, put the weapons away and left the room. I'd given the excuse that I had an emergency back home to deal with and Klarke had immediately given me the gag order.
I went back to Jared, but I'd been an absolute wreck. I needed to tell him. He knew Thomas, I didn't know how well he knew him, but he did. I couldn't keep something like that from him, not when I was trying to change. Trying, but it seemed Klarke had ideas to turn me into something far worse than what I'd been.
I'd kept silent that night, but Jared had known something was up. He'd asked, but I'd silently shrugged the question off. I was caught between being truthful, and being caught by Klarke. I wasn't sure how he would know if I told Jared, but I was worried that somehow he would.
When I'd woken in the morning though, he was on his side staring at me.
"Hi," I said with a half smile.
"Hi."
Jared leaned over and kissed my forehead between my brows.
"Are you going to tell me what's been bothering you since you got home yesterday?"
I chewed on my bottom lip. I was still torn between confiding in him, letting him know what was going on with a person he obviously knew, and doing what I was told.
"You can tell me what's going on." There was hurt in his voice. He thought I didn't trust him enough to tell him. That wasn't it at all.
"They--we have a werewolf. We're keeping him there to get information from him. He knows something about a group of werewolves that they've been after."
"What are they going to do to him?" James asked as he stepped back slightly.
"I don't know, but Jared, it's Thomas Bradly. That guy I saw you talking to at the pub."
"What? You have to get him out of there. They're going to kill him."
"Why would they do that?" I asked. Given what I'd heard from Klarke, it was a possibility. They were making me torture him after all, or they were going to make me torture him. I was curious why Jared would jump to that conclusion though.
"Because of who he is. He wasn't exactly the best person before. He was involved with some not so good people. I ran into him and his pack one time when we visited London. It was shortly after I'd been turned and apparently it had made me stick out like a sore thumb."
"What did they do?"
"They didn't do anything, mostly because Thomas had helped me get away from them and off their radar. They'd thought I was moving in on their territory. He was still with them at that time, but I think he was close to leaving. He saw me in the bar when we first got here and we talked for a bit. He's been away from them for a while now."
"So you think The Torch will kill him?"
"You don't think they would?"
"I don't know," I murmured.
It wasn't the truth, and I knew Jared could tell. He backed away and got out of the bed. I sat up and watched him as he went around the room, first throwing on a t-shirt before changing out of the pajama bottoms and into jeans. He was deathly silent the whole time, not looking my way.
I ran a hand through my hair and sighed heavily.
"Are they going to torture him to get the information?"
My throat tightened. It was like he knew exactly what was going on. This was what I couldn't talk about though, and I didn't want to. I didn't want to tell him what Klarke was going to make me do.
"I don't know, Jared. I just don't know. I wouldn't think so, but I honestly don't know." I looked down and swung my legs around so I was sitting on the edge of the bed, my toes barely brushing the ground. I'd tried to make myself sound convincing, and I thought I'd done a good job at it.
"You need to get him out of there." Jared turned to me eyes blazing, I could see the wolf glowing just beneath the brown surface.
"I can't get him out of there! There's no way I can get him out. That place has so much security that it put The Organization in America to shame. There's no way. Even if I did, there are only two people with access into that room; Klarke and me. They would know it was me, not to mention video evidence."
"You need to get him out of there, El. You need to find some way to get him out. There has to be some way."
I could see the look in his eyes. This was someone Jared knew, this was an innocent werewolf, well, now he was innocent though his past was shady. I knew exactly what they had planned for him, and I hated thinking that I was the one that was going to do it. As Eliza Jacobson, I couldn't possibly do that to someone.
If it were Jared in there, I knew I would find a way to get him out. I would do anything I could to get him away from The Organization. It didn't matter if they were different from the group back home; there was no way I would let him stay there. I would sacrifice my safety here for him, but I just didn't think I could do the same for this stranger.
"You can't leave someone in there. You can't subject an innocent person to that group El."
"I'll see what I can do. I swear I will. But please don't get your hopes up."
"Just please get him out of there," Jared begged.
"I'll see what I can do."
I stood up and went to the dressers, pulling out clothes so I could get ready. I took extra care in picking them out for the day I knew I was going to have planned today. There was no way Klarke was going to let me walk out of there early again, not even with a valid excuse. He wanted answers, and he wanted them as soon as possible.
I couldn't do this as Eliza Jacobson, Eliza was completely against what I was supposed to do. I'd cleared my name, changed it, but today I was going to have to find myself again. I was going to have to find Electra Jaeger within me and I was going to have to let her loose.
Bile rose in my throat and I pulled on the black skinny jeans, black tank with the new leather jacket. I brushed through my hair and left it down, swiped some mascara and eyeliner on and then pulled on a pair of boots.
Black was the color today. I wasn't sure the specifics I was going to have to do, but I knew if anything got messy, I would want to be in black. I swallowed a lump at the thought before I pushed it aside. Jared knew something was up as he watched me get ready. I hadn't looked like this since he'd seen me at that bar before I'd left and killed the vampire.
"Electra?" The question wasn't one meant to get my attention. It was one because that was currently the woman he was seeing and he was confused.
I quickly turned to face him and stumbled back a step when I found him just a couple inches away. I sucked in a breath and put out my hand on the desk to steady myself. Jared took another step to close the space caused by my surprise.
"What are you doing?" His voice was low.
"Getting ready to go to work. I need to leave now." My heart was slamming against my chest and my palms started to sweat. "Isaac said he's going to pick me up today. He wanted to talk about something before I went in. He'll be here any moment."
Jared nodded and reluctantly stepped to the side. I went around him and made my way to the door. I looked back once more.
"I'll see you when I come back."
If I'd be able to come back at all. I wasn't sure I'd be able to look him in the eye after today.
I had to wait outside for a few minutes before Isaac showed up, but a few minutes outside alone was far better than the thick tension there had been upstairs with Jared. I'd barely been able to breathe.
Isaac hadn't actually wanted to talk about anything, I'd just asked him to pick me up today because I wasn't sure I'd be able to have Jared take me in. We'd driven in silence the majority of the way, minus the occasional pleasantries.
This time when we entered the building, Steele was waiting for me at the door. She gave Isaac a look that told him he was dismissed. He shot me a 'sorry about your luck' look and then went off to whatever it was he did.
"I wanted you for a job, but Klarke tells me that you're busy for the time being. Care to tell?" Steele asked.
"I'm not at liberty to say. Gag order so to speak."
I knew Steele was frustrated with that answer, but I could also tell she was expecting it.
"Well, I managed to get your case fast tracked and they decided to take care of it already. The Torch is getting you a place to live. You'll be able to move in first thing this evening when you get off."
"That's wonderful!" I said with surprise. "Thank you so much."
"It's the least we can do. Welcome to the team."
I smiled before my stomach churned once again at what I was about to do. I had another favor to ask her, I hoped I wasn't stepping over my boundaries.
"Can I get another outfit please? One that looks just like this. I'll need it before I'm finished today." Steele gave me an odd look. "Just tell Klarke that I'll be needing an identical outfit for what he wants me to do."
At the mention of Klarke and the job he had me on, she nodded. "I'll make sure he knows."
"Thank you. I really am grateful for the sped up process and for the acceptance. If that's all, I think I better get going."
"Of course, Jacobson."The look in her eyes pushed a wave of doubt through me. Steele said she was on my side, but I was quickly becoming worried if she'd turn on me. Klarke was only above her because he happened to be born with the right name, and I think that frustrated her. Here I was, his new little pet doing what he said. It wasn't my fault that I had no power to say no. As far as they were aware, I was a nobody to him. Even if I were to take my namesake, it didn't seem like Isaac was too high up on the chain of command.
I just hoped that she wouldn't give me up to Klarke. I still wasn't sure about him and what he'd do. I had a bad feeling in my gut that despite the rest of The Torch's stance, he was closer to the American organization than would be let on.
I just had to hope that she wouldn't. I took a deep breath and went on my way, going down the set of stairs and stopping in front of the door that held Thomas. I unclipped the badge from my jacket pocket and held it for a moment. Electra Jaeger. I kept repeating my given name over in my head. Maybe one of these times I would be able to slip back into her and do what I needed to do. I don't think that was something I should have been hoping for though. I finally ran the card through the slot. The light turned green, the lock shifted, and I pushed the door open.
I went straight to the cabinet that held the weapons and I took out the gun and blade. I put the gun at my back, tucking it into the waistband, and held the dagger firmly in my right hand. I turned it around a bit, watching as the light overhead reflected off the smooth surface.
I slowly walked over to the table and sat on the top. I looked through the papers again, going over what they wanted to know.
"So we're back again today," I said as I looked over the pages.
"I never left," Thomas smirked. The gesture and his words were lazy from whatever concoction they'd been giving him.
"No, I suppose you didn't. How about we officially begin? I have some questions that I need answers to, and you're the one who's supposed to give them to me. I've been told to use whatever means possible to get what I need."
"That may work if I knew anything." I could hear the slight inflection in his voice that gave his lie away. He was a werewolf that couldn't lie.
"I know that's not true." The corner of his mouth twitched slightly but he otherwise remained composed. He was trying to make me believe him.
"Even if I did know, I wouldn't tell you anything," Thomas spat.
"And why is that? You tell me what you want and you get to walk out of here, free as a... pup?" I shrugged. "If you don't tell me, well then I just have to get creative I suppose."
"How could you hurt a werewolf when you're mated to one?" Thomas hissed.
I was glad I'd told Isaac to cut the voice on the surveillance for the room. I'd told him I would need to be sure no feed would give them what we were saying. I hoped he'd been able to accomplish that by now though.
"Because it's my job, and I've been doing it a lot longer than I've been mated to a werewolf. The name's Electra Jaeger, secondary founding family member. I've taken down an Alpha the night before a full moon, and you sir are not going to be much of a challenge for me really."
I'd found her. I'd found Electra Jaeger, something that I wasn't exactly proud of in that moment.
"Now, where is this pack of yours?" I asked as Thomas narrowed his eyes at me.
"I'm not part of any pack. I'm on my own."
"Good to know. Where's the pack you used to be a part of?"
"I don't know anything."
I stood up and pulled out one of the chairs from the table. The metal legs scarped against the concrete floor and I took it all the way to the opening of his cell.
I scanned my badge and the cell unlocked and I dragged the chair into the small space. There was a restraint behind the back that I clipped to the bar of the door before turning to face Thomas.
"I know they've kept you drugged up. You're not going to be a match for me. Now are you sure you don't know anything?"
He looked at me with those eyes that told me exactly where I could go. I went over to the corner and picked him up off the ground. He reeked of body odor from not having the ability to clean himself, and his bathroom was with him in the stall. Thankfully it had the ability to flush everything away though. Thomas was like dead weight in my arms. He literally couldn't move at all.
I sat him down in the chair and closed all restraints down so he wouldn't be able to move. Even if the drugs wore off, which by the last page in the file, Klarke had stopped the dosing just an hour before, he would not be able to get out.
I wanted to ask why he'd stopped giving the doses, but I had a feeling I knew. Thomas wasn't much for reacting at the moment. When the drugs wore off, everything would be heightened in his regular state. Klarke was hoping that if Thomas didn't give up the information soon, that when the pain started, it would be unbearable to the point where he would have no choice but to spill every last secret he had stashed in that brain.
I pushed the queasy feeling aside and I stood back.
"So you still know nothing?" I asked after having him secured.
Thomas just looked at me with anger in his eyes. Eyes that were clearing more every second. The drug fog was lifting.
I touched the flat side of the blade to his forearm and he hissed under his breath. The mere touch of silver--if it was pure--burned the flesh without it even having to make a single cut. After thirty seconds of holding it to his arm I pulled it back.
"I'll just sit here for a little bit. See if you want to talk when you've had the chance to gather yourself again. I went over to the stone bench that was supposed to be his bed. I sat down, bringing one leg up close to my chest while my other foot dangled over the edge, the tip of my shoe barely scraping the ground as I swung my leg back and forth slightly. I draped the arm with the dagger over my knee that I'd pulled close and I made eye contact with Thomas.
I could see the anger flaring up in there, and the pulsing behind the green eyes with a yellow that wanted to come through. The drug was wearing off quickly now. Soon he would be at his full strength. I probably shouldn't have attached him to the door, but it was too late to take it back now. I was stuck here for a while. I pressed my back against the wall and felt the gun dig into my spine. I took comfort in that pain. If I needed it, it was there.
"I hope you can forgive me for what I'm about to do," I murmured under my breath.
"As if your God could forgive the monstrous things you've done," Thomas growled.
"That's alright, that wasn't who I was talking to," I said as I stood back up.
