Chapter 10-Target

We'd had issues to begin with while trying to get a car, the least of which was trying to agree on what car to get. He had his opinion and I had mine and they seemed to be on completely opposite ends.

James wanted something fast but practical, something that wouldn't stand out too much, and well, I wanted something kick ass. I'd worked my magic and had my little demon whisper in his ear something that he wanted to hear, and we walked away with a black Camaro.

I'd known it would be the one thing that would win. He loved the car he'd had back home, I'd only been eager to oblige. I'd originally insisted on blue, but James made a good point that we wouldn't want to stand out like a sore thumb if we ever needed to run away.

However, the car wasn't ours to keep, we were only renting it. Apparently trying to get a car was impossible when you didn't have a permanent address, something we hadn't thought ahead on. That one left me kicking myself. So we were renting one for a while until we came up with a different solution.

We got the car though, and Jared was just pulling out after dropping me off for work. I walked around the building and went into the entrance I'd been instructed to take. A man met me right inside the door and I had to go through a series of security checks.

I handed him my badge and he looked it over before handing it to a woman next to him.

"T.I." the man said.

"T.I?" I asked him. The man looked at me like I either shouldn't be talking, or that I should know what he was saying. Maybe he was thinking both.

"Torch initiate," he said in a clipped tone. Who knew a British accent could sound so harsh.

Torch initiate? I thought to myself. He'd said Torch. This wasn't The Organization at all, this was The Torch, they were using the founded name.

"please keep walking through. Steele will be up shortly to meet you."

Just like that, I was dismissed. Well he wasn't all that friendly.

A minute later Steele appeared down the hall with Isaac beside her. She held her hand out and I took it, grasping firmly again.

"It's good to see you again, and glad to have you on board. I trust everything went smoothly?"

"As smooth as possible I would say," I said back as I took a small step back automatically. Force of habit from being around Klarke.

"Good. Today you will begin the assessments. We want to know what your skill levels are so we know what we need to teach you before sending you out into the field. I realize that you have already been out there, but we expect our operatives to have a base skill level before being sent out on missions."

I nodded my head, having gotten and guessed as much from the schedule I'd seen in the packet Isaac had given me.

"Jaeger..." Steele stopped there and my heart stopped with her.

Why had she said that? How did she know about me? I thought I was about to go into a panic attack when Isaac spoke up.

"Ma'am?"

"You brought her in correct?" At Isaac's nod, Steele continued. "She should have someone familiar with her. You'll take her around, make sure she's where she needs to be when she needs to be there, got it?"

"Yes, ma'am."

Isaac. Isaac's last name was Jaeger. He was related to me. I'd felt the initial panic wear off only to be replaced by confusion. I watched Steele nod, offering no parting words before she made her leave.

"Jaeger?" I asked trying to make my tone sound as neutral as possible.

"We address each other with our last names. Names are important, some families have been with the group since nearly the beginning. The Jaeger's are one of those families. Not one of the founders, but a close second."

I tried to act like this was all new to me, but I'd been so caught off guard that I couldn't even pretend anything. I forced myself to nod as we started our way down the hall.

Isaac was related to me in some form or another. Who knew how closely, but he was very much related. I wasn't sure if this was good news or bad news. If we ever needed help was there a chance he would be willing? My mind was racing with questions, I felt dizzy with them. I only snapped out of my own head when we stepped into a room filled with targets.

"What are we doing?" I asked looking around.

"Well, we're going to start out by testing you're aim. You're from the states correct? So you've shot a gun?"

I wanted to roll my eyes at the stereotype. Yes I had shot a gun before, but that wouldn't have been the case if I hadn't hunted. Not every American has shot a gun.

"A couple times," I lied.

"Alright. I'll give you a run over the basics just to play it safe. Then we're going to see how good your aim is."

Isaac walked me over to a wall that was covered in all sorts of weapons. It reminded me of the armory in the basement back home, only much larger.

"What do you feel most comfortable with?" Isaac asked.

I wanted to reach for the hand gun, but I restrained myself, not wanting to seem too eager.

I felt myself gravitating toward the Baretta. It looked nice and close to something I had used back home.

"This one," I said picking it up carefully.

"Alright. Let's go get the ammunition, talk safety, load it up, and see what you've got."

We walked down the wall where there was a small table attacked that contained a set of drawers going down. Isaac knelt down, opening one of the drawers and pulled out a small box.

He motioned for me to go next to him. I set the gun down on the table, pointing away from us.

"Good. You obviously know the basics of gun safety."

"Never point at something unless you intend to shoot it," I said not looking at him. I was still thrown off by my discovery of Isaac.

"Do you know how to load a gun?" He asked.

I nodded and pulled the magazine out, finding it to be completely empty. I started to load it up with the bullets Isaac had set on the table. I slid the fully loaded magazine back in and sat it back down on the table. I wasn't going to play completely ignorant.

"Good. Looks like my job may be easy today," he said with a wink.

I didn't say anything back. I couldn't really think of words, my brain was too muddled. I needed to slip back into hunter mode, but I was scared to go there. I wasn't scared because of what I'd done, I wasn't scared because it reminded me of home and what was back there, I was scared because that was Electra Jaeger, and the person standing next to me was related to her.

"So now we're going to go over safety. As you said, you never point at anything unless you intend to shoot it. While we're in this room, there will be verbal commands that let you know when you're allowed to shoot, and when to stop. If for some reason someone needs to go down the lane to the targets, shooting will stop. We play safe here, we don't need any accidents happening."

I nodded along while he kept talking safety and what to do. I'd pretty much started tuning him out. I already knew what he had to say, why listen to it all over again? I'd gotten that enough while living with my father.

It seemed like forever of me pretending to listen, nodding when appropriate, giving brief verbal acknowledgements before we finally walked up to the range.

Don't be too accurate. Be good, but not too good, I kept thinking to myself. I wanted to show that I didn't need too much work, but I didn't want to be too precise. This wasn't the area I was most concerned about though, I knew that I was going to need to be more careful when it came time for combat assessment.

I took my aim and I emptied the gun down into the target. We made our scan of the area, Isaac gave the verbal cue to stop shooting—though there was no one else in the room—and we went to examine the damage.

I'd shot him once in the head, a few times in the chest and one time in the shoulder, almost exactly where I'd been shot, only on the front. I had to hide my smirk for that one. Each shot had gone exactly where I'd wanted it to go. There were a few that were in a fairly nice grouping, but the others would appear to be more wild shots. They would think I had fairly good aim, but wasn't one hundred percent consistent, which was fine by me. It gave me room to 'improve'.

"Good round. Your stance was pretty solid, but one thing that will help you with the accuracy will be your breathing. We like to say breathe in and aim, breathe out pull the trigger."

I turned to make my way back and wiped a hand across my mouth to cover my smile.

"Thanks, I'll try that," I said once I had myself under control.

"You also don't want to take too long before you pull the trigger. Holding your arm up is more effort than you realize. The longer you hold it, the more likely it's going to shake, and even the slightest of movements can have a huge effect on where you hit."

I nodded along like I was taking in everything he had to say. I loaded the gun up again and then shot another round. This time, I'd done a little better than the time before. I figured I could keep improving slightly each round without suspicion.

"Great, you already improved! That was pretty fast."

"What can I say? I'm a fast learner and you're a great teacher."

Isaac smiled at that and he turned around to look at the clock.

"That's all the time she put in for this today. I'm supposed to show you around a bit more, things you weren't allowed to see when you were here last time, and then debrief you on the different creatures and ways to handle them. Then we have lunch break and then you're going to spend the rest of the afternoon in combat."

My eyes went wide slightly and Isaac laughed.

"It sounds scary, but it's really not. They're going to have you go through some different moves, teach you a few things. Your assessments won't actually begin until tomorrow and then we'll see where we'll need to work you."

"Oh, okay. Sounds good I suppose. What do these assessments entail exactly?"

"Your knowledge will be tested. We're giving you a quick run down of all these areas today, you just had shooting practice, you'll have a quick debrief on what types of creatures we fight, how to handle them, how to tell if they're a threat, that sort of thing. You'll also be given a run down of different moves and styles of fighting. Tomorrow when you come in, we'll see how much you know on your own as well as what you retained from what you learned today. After you're assessed and scored then the higher ups will decide what needs to be done to make you field ready. We try to make sure our operatives are as prepared as possible to minimize accidents and fatalities."

They definitely seemed more put together than The Organization from back home. I wondered if this was how both groups had originally started out. Had they had something like this in place in the United States at one time? Or when they went to different countries was that when the divide had occurred?

I pulled the magazine out and checked to make sure it was empty before taking it back to the wall where I'd gotten it from. Isaac put the box of bullets back and then we started to make our way out of the room and down another hallway. It was time to see what this place all had in store.
