Chapter 8

Ty and the other kids ran down the stairs of the Town Hall and into an untouched building across the street.

"Let's hide in here until the monsters are gone," Adam said, out of breath.

"Why were there more of them?" Jason asked. "Is the evil man trying to kill us?"

"Well, he is evil," Seto pointed out.

"But what does he have to gain from killing a bunch of kids?" Dan asked. "I feel like he's smarter than wasting his monsters on us. There must be another reason."

"Maybe he was trying to get us away from the Nether portal," Stampy suggested.

"He has magic powers. Can't he just teleport to the Nether whenever he wants?" Pat asked.

"Maybe he's getting us away from it so someone else can use the portal," Squid replied.

"Who, though?" Jen asked.

"He also scared us away from the building earlier. Maybe he didn't want us going in there," Adam spoke up.

"Or, he didn't want us to find the guy we're looking for," Jordan said.

"So if he doesn't want us to find our guy..." Jerome started.

"And he just scared us away from the Nether portal..." Mitch continued.

"Then that means the guy we've been searching for is going to the Nether!" Ty exclaimed. "Come on!"

He started to run towards the door, but Jordan grabbed the back of his leather chestplate.

"What if the monsters are still out there?" Jordan asked. "We can't afford to fight another entire army."

There were no windows in this building, so they had no way of knowing if the monsters were gone or not.

"But the guy could be at the portal any second!" Ty cried, struggling to pull free.

"He's right, Ty," Adam said. "We don't know if it's safe."

Ty stopped struggling. If Adam, the most daring one of their group, didn't think it was safe, then it probably wasn't.

"Well, someone go check to see if they're gone," Ty said.

"I will!" Mitch and Jerome exclaimed at the same time. They glanced at each other, and raced to the door. They got there at the same time, falling over each other. Mitch cracked the door open, and the two of them peeked out.

"Huh," Jerome said. "The monsters disappeared."

"What? How?" Dan asked.

"Dunno," Mitch replied. "But they're not out there anymore. See?" He opened the door the rest of the way.

The other kids flinched, expecting monsters to come pouring into the room any second. But, nothing happened, and they crept over to the door.

Ty peered out the doorway. Sure enough, there were no monsters in sight.

"So. Can we go back to the portal now?" Ty asked.

"Let's do a vo--" Adam started.

"We don't need any more votes!" Ty yelled. "I'm going out there, whether you guys follow me or not!"

Ty pushed past everyone and walked out into the street. There was nobody in sight. He stomped over to the building next to the Town Hall, and climbed the stairs.

He half expected to find the army of monsters on the second floor, but the room was empty except for the Nether portal again. There was only one change.

The Nether portal was lit.

"The guy was already here?!" Ty yelled, enraged.

"Sorry, man," Seto said from behind him. Ty hadn't even realized that everyone had followed him.

"Well, why don't we just go in there after him?" Mitch asked.

"Haven't you heard stories about the Nether?" Stampy asked. "It's a scary place."

"So?" Jerome asked.

"So we can't go down there!" Squid cried.

"I'm going down there," Ty said. He had already walked up to the portal, and was now standing just in front of it. He noticed some flint and steel on the ground nearby.

"Ty, no!" Adam cried out. "Ten year olds can not go to the Nether!"

"We can try to take on a magical evil guy, but we can't go to the Nether?" Ty asked without turning around.

There was silence behind him, and Ty knew he had gotten to them.

Then, Ty took a deep breath, and jumped into the portal.

Everything turned purple and swirled around. Then, the world disappeared.

After a few seconds, the world appeared again, but this time it had a reddish tint to it. The portal was underneath a netherrack roof. Three sides of the room were walled in, but the fourth side was open.

Ty was about to walk outside of the room, when he heard groaning from the portal.

Adam was standing up, stumbling. "That made me dizzy," he said.

Ty laughed in relief. Adam had followed him down there!

"Are the others coming?" Ty asked.

Adam shook his head. "They were too afraid."

"Even Mitch and Jerome?"

"Yeah. When it comes down to actually doing what they say they're gonna do, they're too scared."

"Well. Let's go find the man," Ty said.

Adam and Ty exited the roofed area, looking around cautiously. Ahead of them, the netherrack sloped down to the lava sea. To their right was an entrance to a Nether fortress, and to their left was an open expanse of netherrack.

"Let's check the Nether fortress," Ty said. Adam nodded, and the two of them walked towards the entrance.

Ty was surprised nothing bad had happened yet. He had heard terrible things about the Nether. But this wasn't so bad.

They entered the nether brick fortress. They followed the hallway and turned a corner. Ty and Adam jumped.

A Zombie Pigman, gold sword in hand, was staring at them.

Ty drew his diamond sword and was about to swing, but Adam put his arm out in front of him. Ty stopped, confused. Adam was staring at the Pigman.

It wasn't attacking them. It was just looking around the fortress, minding its own business.

"Why isn't it attacking us?" Ty asked.

"Zombie Pigmen only attack if you attack them first," Adam replied. "Don't you remember that from mob class?"

"No," Ty mumbled. He was still staring at the creature. It glanced at Ty, then turned around and walked the other way.

"Was it something I said?" Ty asked with a frown. Adam laughed.

The two friends continued down the hallway. They turned another corner, and came upon a room.

The room had three other branches leading off of it. Two of them were roofed, but the one to their left led to an open bridge above the lava sea.

"Which way should we go?" Ty asked.

"Wait. Do you hear that?" Adam asked. He leaned towards the bridge, listening. Ty listened too, not sure what he was trying to hear.

Then, he heard it. Whines, growls, and grunts that could only be coming from Nether monsters.

And the noises were getting louder.

Ty squinted, trying to see down the bridge. Then, an army of Nether monsters turned the corner.

They were charging towards Ty and Adam. Blazes, Magma Cubes, Wither Skeletons, and Zombie Pigmen.

In his panic, Ty barley noticed that four Ghasts were flying in the opposite direction, shooting at something, or somebody. He wondered if it was the guy they were looking for.

But he didn't have time to consider it, because he was too busy running for his life.

Ty and Adam ran back the way they came, away from the monsters. Neither of them screamed; neither of them made any noise. They just ran.

They passed the friendly Zombie Pigman from earlier. It watched them pass, but didn't attack.

Ty and Adam continued to run. The Nether monsters were gaining on them. They were running down the hallway that led out of the fortress.

Ty and Adam exited the fortress, the army only ten blocks behind them. Ty didn't think he had ever run harder in his life. He was even running harder than when he had to catch the train earlier.

Ty and Adam sprinted into the roofed area where the portal was. Luckily, it was still lit. The two of them jumped in.

They had to wait a few seconds for it to transport them. In those few seconds, they watched the Blazes, Magma Cubes, Wither Skeletons, and Zombie Pigmen charge towards them. Ty noticed they all had red eyes.

The Zombie Pigman in the front reached the portal. It raised its gold sword, about to strike Ty.

But then, Ty and Adam disappeared.
