Chapter 29
The pack warriors had returned a little while later, and surprisingly, three of them returned home with a mate. Although it wasn't a high number, it meant three more wolves that could join the fight. It could be the difference between winning and losing.
Cole and I were currently in the car he had borrowed from a nearby pack- the very same car he had used when he had gone looking for Saskia, and had ended up finding me.
Sitting in it felt strange. It brought back a ton of memories from the night I had met Cole, and I remembered how terrified I had been of him. He was putting on a front back then- trying to act scary and intimidate me, as well as attempting to convince me that he didn't care about me.
It had worked for a bit, before I started to see through his cracks and he dropped the big tough alpha persona.
Cole and I were heading to the halfway point to the colony Finn was being held in, and we were setting up tents for everybody to sleep in while they travelled. I had a feeling that it was mostly because I was pregnant, and Cole didn't want me to do the journey. He had suggested for me to stay behind, but all I had to do was glare at him for him to retract that statement.
The wolves were moving slowly- needing to maintain their energy. We only had a certain amount of blood to offer each wolf and we couldn't use it up if the wolves fatigued themselves by rushing the journey.
"How much earlier will we arrive?" I asked, tracing the interior of the car, the action causing Cole to chuckle at me.
"About six hours," he responded, his eyes remaining on the road- if you could call it that. It looked desolate and barely used. "We can't go right through the forest like the wolves are doing, so we're taking the long way around down the roads, but we'll still beat them since they'll be moving slower."
I cocked a brow, gazing out through the windscreen at the barren looking area in front of us. Trees surrounded us, but they weren't busy like the ones in the forest. These looked almost hand-planted.
Resting my forehead against the window, my eyes widened at the sight of some sort of barn- the metal collapsing and the door hanging off. It was rusty, and piles of dirt surrounded it- as if someone had been digging but then given up on their task half way through. The barn clearly hadn't been used in years.
"This was a town years ago," Cole told me, sensing my confusion, and I turned to him.
"Really?" I asked, and he nodded.
"A human one."
His words shocked me. We had only been driving around an hour. There had been a human town this close to Cole's pack lands?
"Wasn't that dangerous?" I questioned. "Having them so close."
Cole chuckled, shaking his head. "They didn't care about wolves. They knew what we were, but they left us alone. I told you that not all humans have animosity towards us, remember?"
It was like second nature to me to think that all humans and wolves disliked each other. Although they didn't get on, Cole had informed me of how there were towns and cities that knew of the wolves but wanted nothing to do with them. I so wished I had been born into one of them.
"What happened to the people who lived here? Where have they all gone?" I asked as we passed a row of crumbling flats, the three story building painted an ugly yellow colour, the paint chipping.
"They moved on. I believe an advocate for the hunt was travelling around speaking to all of the human colonies, towns and cities that weren't involved in it, and soon after that, the city was abandoned. I think it freaked the humans out, and they scattered. They didn't like being so close to us after hearing the lies that were being spread."
Sounded like Markus. "I wasted so much of my life training to hunt you." I chuckled, but it held no humor. I hadn't given myself time to actually be angry about my past, but it had hit me since I had found out that not all humans spent their entire life preparing to kill werewolves.
Cole scowled, placing his large veiny hand on my thigh, giving it a good squeeze. "Think of it like this, if you hadn't been a part of Markus' colony, then I wouldn't have stumbled into you in the woods and we wouldn't have met."
I smiled. Although I knew Cole was right, he hadn't had his childhood ripped away from him. I never got to do normal kid things like play with dolls, or learn math or have a sleepover with friends. I longed for them, but all I was expected to do was train.
Train, train and train.
That was what my life had consisted of.
It had been such a waste of time.
I had wasted so many tears about not being good enough, worried that I was going to get slaughtered by a wolf and disappoint my father.
I didn't blame him though. He had been brainwashed like everyone else, and had grown up in the colony. He had lived the same life I had before I had run into Cole.
"Without you participating in the hunt, I wouldn't have met the love of my life," Cole said with a small smile. "And we wouldn't have a beautiful baby on the way."
Cole was being extra positive for the both of us today, and although his kind words caused my tummy to perform flips, I couldn't help but feel horrendous about Finn.
He wouldn't have been in this predicament if it wasn't for me, but I was continuously reminding myself that I hadn't done any of this on purpose. I had to stop thinking that everything was my fault.
"How long of the drive have we got?" I asked, leaning to the side to place a soft kiss on my mate's cheek as we drove, and he growled in approval.
"Eight hours."
I groaned, tilting my head back against the comfortable headrest, closing my eyes.
This was going to be a long journey.
—--------------------------------
I awoke to Cole's lips on my forehead, and I jolted, my eyes springing open. I was in the front of the car still, and it was dark out. Cole wasn't on the driver's side, and I turned my head to see him leaning over me on my side with the car door open.
"What time is it?" I asked groggily, rubbing my eyes.
Cole chuckled. "About seven in the evening. We've been here for almost two hours. I've been setting up the camp."
I clambered out of the car, eyes wide. I swatted my mate, cursing at him for not waking me up. My pregnancy had made me exhausted. "I would have helped you."
"Absolutely not, sleeping beauty," Cole said, wrapping his arms around my waist and pressing me against the car, placing a heavy kiss to my lips.
He seemed to be in such a good mood, and I didn't know why. My guess was that he was faking it though. He knew how terrified I was that the colony had done something to Finn, and for my sake, he was trying to remain positive.
This wasn't a fairy tale though, and I knew that not everyone was going to make it out of this alive.
"Do you want something to eat?" Cole asked me, leading me into the dense trees, away from the field where the large black car was parked. A campfire was lit, and it immediately warmed me, not that it was overly cold out tonight.
Cole had already begun cooking, and I peered into the pot resting on top of the fire, the smell of rice and beans hitting my nostrils. It didn't look like the most delectable of foods, but beggars couldn't be choosers. We were in the middle of nowhere.
After eating, Cole showed me to our tent, and I smiled. I had never been camping before- it being something that I had always wanted to do as a child. My friends and I had even made our make-shift tent out of bed linen and sticks and had spent the evening in it before we were found and our creation was ripped down.
"This is nice," I said, causing him to raise his eyebrows, nodding at me before chuckling.
"It doesn't take much to impress you, does it?" he teased, gesturing to the small living quarters. The sleeping bags looked cosy and fluffy though, snuggly blankets piled on top of them, with a small lamp hanging from a loop at the top of the tent.
Dressing into the pyjamas Cole had packed for me, I watched with hazy eyes as Cole peeled his T-shirt from his body, stripping down into just his underwear.
Even though he hadn't been working out nearly as much as he usually did, he was sporting his usual six pack. His tanned skin coated them, and I slid my finger over him down towards the trail of hair leading into his boxers.
Cole had purposely packed me a skimpier pair of pyjamas, and I narrowed my eyes at him as I cocked my hip. The crop top was tight and pushed my breasts up, the small cotton shirts leaving little to the imagination, my ass hanging out the bottom.
"You better not go outside in these when the warriors show up." Cole chuckled, shaking his head as he raked his eyes over me.
I sighed, moving over to him and pushing him down onto the sleeping bag, straddling him. I could feel his bulge against me. I was nervous about what was to come, but I also rarely got alone time with Cole. We had both been preoccupied.
"You're so beautiful," Cole said, tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear.
I was no longer tired since I had slept almost the entire car journey, and I knew that if I laid in bed while Cole slept, I was going to overthink everything and would probably end up bursting into tears. Finn had to be okay.
Hooking his finger into my pyjama shorts, Cole raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Wet already?" he asked, touching between my folds, making me shiver.
He was hot. What could I say?
Slipping his fingers into me, I tilted my head back, groaning. I could be as loud as I wanted, and that turned me on even more.
"Eyes on me, baby," Cole ordered, using his free hand to take gentle hold of my chin, forcing me to look at him. His grey eyes met mine, and I moaned, holding onto his shoulders as I rode his fingers.
Cole took his cock out of his boxers and began fisting it, cursing to himself as he pulled my crop top up with his teeth, latching onto one of my breasts. Having his tongue tease my nipple felt incredible, and I swatted his hand away from his cock so that I could take over. Pumping him, he groaned, cussing over and over, his eyes turning black. It seemed like his wolf had come out to play.
Clambering off Cole's lap, I tilted down, capturing his dick in my mouth, Cole manoeuvring himself so that his fingers were still deep inside of me. He collected my hair in his fist, pulling it away from my face and helping me bob up and down on his stiff cock.
Hooking his fingers inside of me, rubbing at my g-spot, I used my free hand to circle my clit- the other holding the base of Cole.
"You look so pretty with your mouth wrapped around my cock, baby," he complimented me, and I moaned loudly in response, feeling my orgasm fast approaching.
Licking the tip and teasing him, Cole did the same with me, retracting his fingers which caused me to whine in protest.
He chuckled, slamming his fingers back into me, and I took as much of him into my mouth as I could, allowing my throat to close around him each time I bobbed down.
"Is my pretty mate going to come for me?" asked Cole, and I hummed in response, my insides tightening around Cole's fingers as I released, a loud moan releasing from my mouth.
Cole thrusted into my mouth, pre-cum spurting from his tip before he released down my throat, grunting my name over and over again until he pulled himself out of me. Planting a kiss to my forehead, he caressed my neck, smiling tiredly.
"I love you. We're going to be alright, okay?"
I gulped, nodding.
We were going to be okay.
Everyone was.
I had to stay positive.
