Chapter 21
The humans didn't pay me much mind, most likely just assuming I was one of them and was here for the same reason they were. All of their eyes were set on the giant hairy wolves lunging towards them, their eyes blazing and teeth bared. I couldn't think, and I allowed myself to clamp my eyes shut for a few seconds as I clutched onto my spear with clammy hands.
"You can do it," I muttered to myself above the noise of the people yelling, the wolves snarling and the guns blasting. Marching towards a human that had their back to me, I wielded the spear forwards, the tip of it lodging itself inside their chest. Their body went limp, and they crumbled to the ground with a whine, their hazy eyes staring up at me with that looked like betrayal for a few seconds before their soul left their body.
I hated being a killer. A murderer. But it was what I was. It was for the greater good though. These humans were going to hurt my family and friends.
Luckily, nobody had noticed my attack, and I scanned the wooded area to see Cole still flat against the ground. I wasn't sure if it was because he was actually listening to me for once, or because he really couldn't just get up. I hoped it wasn't the latter. My heart burst at the idea of him lying there so vulnerable and exposed.
I wanted to go and lie next to him. To plead with him to be okay, but that would only put a target on his back. Being left alone was what was best for the moment.
Not all of the humans had guns. It appeared that they hadn't been able to make enough for everybody, and many of them wielded spears and knives. I knew I couldn't go for the humans with guns. I would be shot and killed, so I had to be sneaky about the way I approached people I was intending to kill.
Again and again, I speared people from behind, one of them spinning around at the last minute and slashing me with their knife. They managed to cut open my side, and I groaned as I yanked the spear from their chest, again, watching them flop to the ground lifeless.
I had no time to feel guilty though. They were attacking us, and I was merely defending the territory. My side oozed blood as I moved away from the body as quickly as I could, leaning down to pick up as much of the wolfsbane off the floor that the humans were scattering as I could, stuffing it into my pockets.
Even if I could stop one wolf from getting burned, it could be the difference between life and death for them. The wolves were putting up a hell of a fight though, tearing the humans to shreds and flinging their body parts across the open wooded area, pieces of them smacking against the bark on the trees. It caused me to cringe.
I gasped as I felt a presence come up behind me, and I pointed my spear as I spun, ready to go for the heart of another human, but I stopped myself once I noticed Finn's shocked eyes staring back at me.
"Woah," he said, holding his hands up, showing me his blunt looking knife that was smeared with blood. "Reya, it's me."
Luckily, we were at the corner of the fight, and so our conversating wasn't obvious, but I still took a step away from him so we didn't look too suspicious. "What the hell are you doing here Finn?"
He shrugged, turning away from me to stab a human sprinting past us in the chest, pushing him to the ground and stabbing him once more, yanking the small and delicate knife from his skin. "Just doing my part. One of the warriors came back to the pack to demand back-up. I overheard."
"How did you get here so quickly?" I wondered, smacking a small female human in the face with the handle of my spear, yanking her knife from her and sinking it into her chest. She screamed, and I knew that the shrill tone was going to haunt me in my sleep from now on.
"I hitched a ride on one of the wolves. They can move fast." Finn almost smiled, but began to move away from me, knowing that we had been talking for far too long. We needed to blend in.
I almost allowed myself to imagine a wolf's furious face as Finn clutched onto their neck fur while it ran, and in any other circumstance, the thought would have made me laugh.
I continued to glance over at Cole's lifeless wolf form, checking that nobody was near it. It seemed that the humans assumed that he was dead and were leaving him be, focusing on the live wolves further away for now.
He couldn't be dead though. I refused to believe that he was. I had no experience with guns. I had never heard of them. I had no idea the extent on an injury one could cause.
Less and less people remained, and although many the wolves appeared burned and broken, they were still fighting. I scanned the bodies on the ground, cursing to myself at the sheer sight. It was enough to make a strong man vomit.
I flinched as I moved, the wound on my side seeming to open up more and more as I ran as fast as I could towards another human that was a little too close to Cole for my liking. If I could get all of the humans to the other side of the wooded area, I could get Cole some help without them being seen.
"You're the human traitor bitch," the man barked at me as he spotted me, turning around and pointing his gun in my direction. I froze. I hadn't seen what he had been holding, and I had assumed it was a small knife.
I stood with my feet planted to the ground, clutching my spear to my chest, my eyes wide. I tried my best not to glance at Cole's body. I didn't want to give the human any ideas that I was going to get him help.
"We were warned about you," the human spat. "You sided with the wolves. That abomination on your neck gives you away."
I had forgotten about my mark being on display, but it didn't look like the other humans had spotted in the midst of all the chaos. "How did you know where the pack was? Which colony are you from?"
The human cracked his neck as he moved it from side to side, taking a few steps closer to me, my heart hammering against my ribs. Glancing through the trees, I spotted a few of the humans from the apartment complex watching us with wide eyes.
It looked like they wanted to make a run for it, but the warrior that had led them outside was keeping them in their small huddle. He looked torn as if he wanted to jump into the fight, but he had to stick to his orders. He was to watch the humans.
Cole wasn't going to be very happy with him for not keeping me in check, but I didn't blame him. If there was something that I wanted to do, I was going to do it.
I nodded at him subtly, looking over in Cole's direction, hoping that he had caught my drift. They needed to get him out of here, and I was the perfect distraction for this human.
"I don't owe you an explanation," chuckled the human as he drew back my attention, suddenly pressing down on the front piece of the gun, the bullet flying through the air and missing me narrowly. I had managed to leap out of the way, landing on the ground in a heap, my face becoming covered in dirt and blood from a deceased wolf.
I pushed myself up from the ground as I ran, dropping my spear- it weighing me down. I ran for my life, purposely weaving in and out of bodies so that I was harder to hit. I heard the buzzing bullets whizz past me, causing my ears to ring, and I heard the yells of the human behind me as he became increasingly frustrated that he couldn't shoot me point black in the head.
If I was going to die, I was going to make sure that Cole got the help that he needed. I knew he could be saved. He had been shot, but he was an Alpha wolf and would heal somewhat, even with the wolfsbane burning his body. He just needed to get it extracted as soon as possible to avoid permanent damage or death.
I ran, leaping behind a tree, curling up on the other side of the bark. It appeared that the human had lost me as I had ran right through the middle of a few fighting humans and wolves. Peering around the tree, I narrowed my eyes at the familiar face yelling and spearing a wolf, smiling to himself when he came to the conclusion that he had killed it.
Christopher.
Gulping, I pushed my back against the bark of the tree, my ears ringing and blood thumping around my body at an uncontrollable rate. It felt as if I was going to go into cardiac arrest, my fitness levels having depleted severely since finding out I was pregnant.
Controlling my breathing, I peered off into the distance to see multiple wolves manoeuvring themselves around Cole, lifting him up and carrying him into the woods quickly. The feeling of relief that washed over my body was indescribable, but I knew that there was still a chance that I wasn't going to make it.
I checked to see that Finn was still alive, and I spotted him struggling with Christopher on the ground, the both of them grunting and cursing as they elbowed each other in the face, landing punch after punch to one another. Finn appeared to be bleeding significantly, Christopher's face also smothered in the crimson liquid, but it was hard to tell who exactly it was coming from.
Finn's muscles bulged as he attempted to fling Christopher off of his chest, but he only laughed as he pinned down my friend, grappling for his knife from his blood stained hand. Christopher managed to pry it from him, and he held it up, ready to plunge the small knife into Finn's chest.
I swallowed, suddenly spotting a small black object laying on the ground a few meters away from me, right beside a fallen human who had obviously dropped it before they had met their end. Jumping out from the tree, knowing that I was completely exposed, I moved myself over to the gun, watching in horror as Finn tried his best to push against Christopher's arm, just about stopping the knife from sinking into his neck.
Without thinking, I snatched up the gun, jostling the heavy object in my hand before aiming it at Christopher's head. I pressed down on a small part of it by my finger like I had seen the other humans do, watching as the bullet flew from the nozzle, hitting Christopher in the chest. The gun vibrated in my hands, causing me to recoil backwards.
It wasn't where I had aimed, but it didn't matter- Christopher falling to the ground beside Finn, clutching onto his chest as he heaved. Finn didn't hesitate to pick up the dropped knife, scrambling away from Christopher with wide eyes as he gazed around, spotting me and nodding as a quick thank you.
I gasped though as I looked past Finn, noticing the human man that had chased me over here raising his gun and aiming it right for me. I panicked, my sweaty fingers sliding against my own gun as I raised it also, but it was too late. The bullet came flying towards me, hitting me and causing me to fly backwards and land on the ground with a loud thump.
I couldn't see anything.
I couldn't hear anything.
I couldn't feel anything.
All that was there was blackness.
