Winter
Finally, it was the first day of the heist. At least that's what Winter called it. On their way to the museum, Winter felt as though she were to explode. There was a question that she just needed to get an answer to.
"Carter? How do pokemon procreate?"
"What?!" Carter sounded bewildered.
"It's honestly a very interesting question that scientists should take to heart. They're born from eggs yet some of them, even in full evolution, are smaller than the eggs that they hatch in. Like a Plusle or a Minun."
"Winter," Carter stopped and turned, his brown hair bouncing as it caught her attention, "Why on Earth, no, how on Earth, does someone think of a question that stupid?"
"How do you do that?" Winter's eyes looked glazed over, not with tears, but with determination.
"Winter-"
"What products do you use to make your hair so bouncy? I've been trying to do that for so long. How did you find that stuff? Oh my gosh, it even feels fluffy."
Carter's expression shifted, "Oh. Well, if you must know," he grinned, "I was born with it and surrounded by only the best shampoo and conditioner."
"I wish my parents were opera singers," Winter sighed.
Carter looked down at her and patted her head, "Peace, my dear. One day, thy hair will be as wonderful as mine."
"I sure hope so," Winter poofed her hair a bit, staring straight at the museum.
The National Archaeological Museum had many visible columns in the front. Most of them were doric but the ones on the front portico were ionic. Winter preferred the doric columns over the ionic due to their simplistic flat tops. Besides the portico, the walls were strange orange-red and continued on the inside of the portico. Those same walls also had slanted red-tiled roofs whereas the entrance had a flat marble top. The front sides of the portico were a more yellowish color that Winter thought clashed with the red.
Oh, geez. Those are some really weird color choices... ah well. I ain't greek or ancient, so what am I to say about it?
And on the top of the portico, four statues, two on either side, and a Grecian flag could be found standing majestically into the sky. Winter chuckled at that thought. Standing majestically into the sky. Such a strange thing for a human to say. The stairs that lead to the color clashing entrance were plentiful and lined with several other students from who-knows-where. Like, a lot, a lot. From one end of the stairs the other.
"Dayuuuum," she whistled.
"You can say that again, Minty Fresh," Carter nodded.
"Who do you think took it?"
"Well, I suppose it depends on the security cameras and shit."
"Yeah? Wanna bet on it?"
"Ohoho, bet it's the assistant director. They've got the most to gain."
"Ten bucks?" Winter stretched her hand out.
"Ten bucks," Carter grinned and shook.
They entered the building. The inside was a large room with a tiny gift shop in the corner. There were four ionic pillars, two on either side of the room. Plus four other square-looking pillars on either side of the ionic pillars. Winter knew they were ionic because they were outside and because their tops curled down and inward. In the far left corner were the ticket booth and bag room. Carter had his backpack so they had to turn that it. All the water and food, gone but not forgotten. Winter stared at Carter melancholily when he got back from putting it away. He reassured her that they would get the backpack later.
Winter and Carter went through the entrance that led to the Mycenean Antiquities Hall.
"First thing. The first fucking thing that you see is the mask," Carter complained as soon as they entered the main exhibition corridor.
"Was."
"Ah, whatever. There's still a replica anyways. No one will ever know it's missing. Well. Actually, people will know because of those fucking media station things."
"At least we're getting paid right?" Winter said as they kept looking at the mask's replica.
"Wow."
"What is it now, Cadillac?"
"Oh, nothing. Just thinking."
"Wow, that's new."
"Exactly, wow," Carter smiled at her.
Winter smiled back at him. In the past couple of days, they worked on thinking before doing something. Carter didn't want to at first and argued that thinking before acting saved time. Winter argued back. Well, tickled him. The day they first began, she sat on him in the morning and tickled him until he surrendered. By this point, their upstairs neighbors were probably very annoyed by them. In a way, Winter tortured him to practice. Cruel but effective.
"Hey, Winter."
"Oui?"
"Why are we here?" I mean, we can't exactly interview people in our regular identities without them knowing."
"Carter, because you just started thinking, I'll give you a pass."
"For what?"
"Not thinking about this," Winter tapped his head, "We're going to pretend to be reporters from America doing a cover on the mask."
"Aren't they gonna ask for a badge or something?"
"Carter. Sometimes, not sleeping can be a blessing. Be glad I didn't listen to you in the past couple of days."
"Hey, Siri. Make a reminder to buy melatonin gummies," Carter said, turning his back on Winter.
"Okay, making a reminder to buy melatonin gummies. Is that right?" his phone responded.
"Yes."
"Alright."
He turned back to Winter who was now holding two badges. Winter grinned as his face turned to shock.
"I-... how? How did you even print them? Where did you print them?" Carter held one of them, "Oh gosh, it even feels real."
"Answering that printing question, I used magic, and yes, I even laminated them," Winter put her hands on her hips.
"Wait, but, won't the employees think we're just randos?"
"Nope, I emailed the director, under a different email of course. It's like Janus and we have no connection. And asked him to tell the people that they'll be interviewed today. They're expecting us."
Carter just stood in shock, looking down at the fake badge. Winter had been preparing this for a while. Even they were somewhat young, they still made believable reporters. Winter even brought a camera that didn't work. The lights and all did work though to make any actions of hers more believable. Then, how do they know what the person said? Winter would use her phone to record the conversation. How would she play it off? She would tell them she was using it as a microphone. Simple as that. Nothing could go wrong.
"Alrighty, then," Carter finally said, "Where to?"
"We're going to the conference room!" Winter gleefully pointed a finger down the exhibit corridor.
She then changed the position of her finger to point somewhere else. She furrowed her brows and changed positions again.
"You have no idea where we're going, dontcha?" Carter looked amused and bored at the same time.
"Stop thinking, dammit."
"Wanna ask someone?"
Winter glared at him while still pointing, "Fine."
Carter smiled at her.
————————————————————————
A tall woman walked up to the conference room door. She had reddish-brown, middle length hair. She wore wayfarer glasses and had an infinity scarf over a grey shirt and blue blazer. She also wore a pair of black dress pants. Winter liked her fashion sense.
"HA! You think you can out dress US?!" Winter thought and smirked a little.
She knew it wasn't a competition on who was best dressed but, today, she had actually dressed-up. Which was a pretty big deal to her. Winter wore a green, knife-pleated skirt that went down to the middle of her shins, a yellow blouse, whose sleeves went to her elbow, and over that, a black blazer with green and tan plaid patterns. The sleeves were rolled up a bit to expose the ends of her yellow sleeves. She had also put her hair up in a ponytail that morning. Carter wore very business casual clothing. Light blue button-down, unbuttoned grey sport coat, navy blue slacks, some socks that resembled Lay's chip bags, and dress shoes. All that talk about buttons reminded Winter of how she wanted to make a small button marionette.
"Hi, there! You must be Mrs," Winter looked down at her sticky notes, "Mind my mispronunciation, Miss Persopoulus?"
"Yes, that is me, but you can call me Briseis," Miss Persopoulus stretched out a hand.
Winter did the same and shook her hand, "Well, Briseis, you speak very good English!"
"Thank you, I lived in America for a while when I was younger," she smiled at the compliment, "Um, what was your name again? I just remember it started with a 'W'? Sorry, I'm not very good with names."
"Oh, my name is Winter. That person over there is my partner Carter," Winter led her to the table.
Carter looked up from the camera and waved at the mention of his name.
Briseis blushed a little, "How old are you guys?"
Carter chimed in, "I'm 22, and Winter is 21. Alright, can you sit a bit more to the left, please?"
"Australian, are you?" she asked.
Carter stood up straight and grinned, "Uh, yeah. Some people usually think I'm British," he tilted his head a little, "Nice listening."
The little, green gremlin from last night reappeared in Winter's mind, "WAZZA, FUCKAA! Which bitch is hittin' on Carter now?"
"Who even are you?" Winter thought.
"I'm you but more jealous," the gremlin replied, "Can you please stop calling my Gremlin?"
"What else do you want me to call you?! Chickweed?"
"Why Chickweed?"
"Because you're a chick and a weed."
"... You're really mean you know that?"
"Only to you, Chickweed."
"Wintah!" Carter snapped his fingers in front of her, "You ready?"
Briseis smiled politely at her.
"I- uh, yeah. I'm ready," Winter's face turned red.
She took her place next to Carter and pulled out her phone, telling Briseis how they couldn't purchase actual microphones so they just use their phones. Briseis nodded. Winter opened her voice memos app and pressed the record button.
"This is Winter Rossi and Carter Churchill interviewing Miss Briseis Persopoulus at," Winter looked at Carter's watch, "11:29 am on June 19, 2019. Hello again, Miss Briseis!"
"Hello again to you too, Winter. Carter," Briseis smiled and nodded at Carter.
He nodded back. Then, Carter gave Winter the questions, a grin, and a thumbs up.
"What are your feelings on the Mask of Agamemnon being stolen?" Winter asked.
Briseis sat up straight, "Well, it's a tragedy really. The mask has been one of the main attractions here at the museum. It's really a shame that someone would even think about taking it."
This time, Carter asked a question, "What is it that you do here?"
"Glad you asked! I am an archivist here at the museum. That means I'm responsible for the collections of artifacts and records that are stored here. It's really interesting and fun!"
"That does sound fun!" Carter flashed her a smile that he had only ever given Winter.
"Ooh, damn. How's your heart, sweetie? Hurts, doesn't it?" Chickweed winced.
Winter pushed Chickweed to a corner in her brain, "Sit down and stay there."
"C'mon! You can't ignore me forever! You gotta tell him if you want me gone! You can't keep pushing away your probbblleeemmmmmsssssss..." Chickweed's voice started to fade away as she was pushed into a corner.
"So, Briseis, were you here when the mask was taken?" Winter asked with a faint distaste in her voice.
She wasn't exactly sure why, but Winter had a bad feeling about Briseis.
"We are still unsure about when the mask was taken, so I can't say for certain if I was here during the theft," Briseis answered, oblivious to Winter's distaste.
Though Briseis didn't hear it, Carter did. Winter knew he did because of the way he shifted nervously in his chair.
"So, how much is the Mask of Aggie worth if it was to be sold on any market?" Carter quickly asked to divert Briseis's attention from Winter's last question.
Briseis twisted her body to face Carter, "Well, Carter, that is a good question. The mask is priceless so putting a price on it would be like calling ice cream frozen milk. Does that make sense?"
"Yes. Perfect sense," Winter did think it made sense, that still didn't mean it changed her opinion of the archivist.
Carter looked at her confused, "Wait, how does that make sense? I don't get it."
Winter patted his back, "My dear boy, ice cream is not just frozen milk. Also, it's just downgrading it. Would you want to downgrade your favorite thing when explaining it to outsiders?"
"Ohhhhh... okay."
They turned their attention to Briseis again.
"So, Briseis," Winter asked the question this time, "Where was the mask when it was taken?"
"Um, I'm sorry? Why does that matter?" Briseis cocked her head, "Do you think I took it?"
"NO! Uh, no. Nonononono," Carter freaked out and shook his head, "Nononononononono. No."
"I think we're done here," Briseis stood up," If you need me," she looked at Carter, "You have my number."
Carter opened his mouth but didn't say anything. He looked at Winter. He could feel hatred radiating out of her.
"Wintah..."
"You shut your mouth right now," Winter got up to leave the room, "I'm going to get some water."
Carter got up to follow her, "Winter! Please, what's going on?"
"You're going on! You and your stupid self. Do the rest of the interviews without me," Winter turned back to her and snapped.
Carter watched her leave and put his hands on his head. Winter didn't normally snap or get angry. Or show any emotion than happy and calm, for that matter. Maybe a little bit of annoyance, but never anger. Then, why did she get angry all of a sudden? She had no idea.
Winter walked back to the apartment. She should've been scared that someone might harm her but she wasn't. Probably because she knew they were too scared to do so. Angry women can be very scary. When she got back, Winter went straight to the bedroom and changed out of the formalwear and into her pajamas. She plopped onto the bed and took out her phone. Winter then proceed to open the Amazon Videos app and stream Psych. It had taken her a while to remember how to spell it but it eventually caught on.
For some reason, she always found shows more fun and real than books. Maybe it was because you couldn't read their minds like in real life. Psych showed Shawn's thoughts every now and then but that just made it better. A nice wrap to an episode. You go back to different scenes in the episode and realize a clue was there all along. Winter found it nice. She started to think about Carter. It had probably been around thirty-seven minutes since she left. She thought about how Carter was feeling. Winter sighed and called Carter.
"Hey! You alright?" a voice came from her phone.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine!" Winter took Carter's pillow and put it on her chest just because the weight felt nice, "Sorry 'bout that."
"No, it's totally fine. I'm just glad you got to the flat in one piece. I mean, you were wearing a jacket and all. Assuming you changed out," Carter said.
Winter chuckled, "You know me very well. How are the rest of the interviews going?"
It was now 12:26.
"I only have a couple left, so yeah, they're going very smoothly," Carter paused, "Do you want me to get some more food today?"
Winter nodded, "Yeah, that would be nice. While you're at it, can you get some ice cream?"
"Sure thing, Minty Fresh."
"Alright, see ya later!"
"Mhm, see ya latah!" Carter hung up the call.
*didn't I say I wouldn't update in a while? I think I may have lied. Hmmm... know what? Actually no, I don't know. Uhh... here are some pictures of Winny and Cary in their formalwear I guess.
