Chapter Four

Mason's point of view
"Are you sure bringing her with you was a good move?" Dean asked as we waited for the rest of the pack to arrive.
I shrugged in response. "Lex can take care of herself."
Dean's brows rose. "It's not her I'm worried about. Jenna's on the verge of being uncontrollable. In a few years she'll face death or movement to a stronger alpha."
I nodded. I knew Jenna was bat shit crazy back when I slept with her, over time the craziness wouldn't have gotten better. "Lex can handle her."
The alpha wolf smiled. "I'm not worried about a little cat fight. I'm worried about what the woman will do to you once she's filled in all the blanks."
"I'm not too worried." It was honest because I wasn't. Jenna was way before Lex, she would understand... hopefully.
I didn't like the smile he was giving me, like he knew something I didn't. "Has she ever met any of your past conquests?"
"No."
"Ha!" His voice boomed. "You don't know what she's going to do. You can't bring your woman around your past lovers without disclosure."
"Maybe she won't find out." I was hopeful that she wouldn't, but I wouldn't have bet anything on it.
The big man laughed. "Yeah, right. They're not getting along as it is. It's only a matter of time until Jenna uses that against Lexi."
I sighed unhappily. I didn't need this drama when I was looking for murderous wolves.
Lexi's point of view
It was the first night when Mason was invited to go hunting in the woods with the alpha and a couple other members of the pack. Which in turn, left me at the house without any backup against all the girls I had spotted earlier.
I wasn't excited about it, but I also wanted to see why that woman from earlier had seemed to develop some hatred for me. I hadn't even spoken to her. The hate she had for me probably came from something Mason did whenever he had met this pack. After all, she did know that I was going to be Mason's mate sometime soon.
That brought up a whole lot of anxiety that I knew I shouldn't have been feeling.
I spied on the group of four women as they prepared dinner for the men who were gone. The three human women were all different. The (unnatural) blonde one had an athletic body type, but she was in no way skinny like the, unnaturally, red head. The brunette had a little meat on her bones and held herself like she was too good to be here. All three women were cute. They weren't models, but they weren't ugly either.
Then, there was the werewolf woman. Her mark was very obvious with the shirt she was wearing. She looked peeved, like she was trying to come up with a plan to get back at someone who wronged her. I saw that look on Willow's face when she was planning on dishing out some payback to the boys.
I had a feeling those plans were going to be used against Mason, so I needed to stop her train of thought.
One step into the kitchen and I could feel the wolf's eyes on me. "Can I help at all?"
The three women looked at their leader, the werewolf. She narrowed her eyes at me. "That's okay. I think we can manage without your help," she replied snarky.
I plastered on a fake smile and hoped that it looked real enough. "Are you sure? I'd love to be of some use around here."
The woman, who hated me for no good reason, flipped her fake blonde hair at me, ending the conversation. She was definitely used to being the one in control of the other women and getting special treatment from the men in the pack.
If I could get the three humans to like me then maybe they could talk their friend into calming down.
There was nothing I could do. I wasn't comfortable asking them questions, the human looked to the werewolf woman. It was obvious I wasn't welcome here.
These women were something else. Since they didn't need my help, I stood back and watched them. Did the humans know about the wolves? Were they married to wolves? As far as I knew, the alpha of all the alphas on this continent, Finn Madill, was against humans knowing of our existence. The only excuse was marriage, which was a recipe for disaster to me. This was a secret too big to wait until after marriage.
But they worked as a unit, like they had been doing this for years. It reminded me of home. I missed being home, but I would have missed Mason more if I stayed.
They finished cooking not long after I started watching them. The werewolf woman left the room. The humans paused and watched her leave, listening for her footsteps to fade as she walked farther away.
The blonde, who happened to be the closest to me smiled apologetically. "Sorry, we're not going to piss Jenna off by talking to you when she's around. I hope you can understand."
"I don't even know what I did," I confessed.
Her smile turned real. "Jenna's not usually so hostile, but she's always PMS-ing." She outstretched her arm over the island. "I'm Samantha, though everyone around here calls me Sparks."
I nodded once and gently shook her hand. "I'm Alexia, but I go by Lexi."
She pointed over her shoulder to the red head. "She is Laura, and the lovely brunette is Eve." It was obvious that Sparks didn't care for the brunette.
Eve huffed and threw a glare over her shoulder at Sparks. "And when Jenna comes back to cuss you out, don't be surprised."
Sparks rolled her eyes. "Jenna's always got a reason to cuss everyone out."
"Does she boss you guys around?" I asked in hopes that I could get these women to open up to me, maybe I could help make this place a better pack. It would be a whole lot easier on these humans if no one threw a temper tantrum at them.
Laura scoffed. "That's being nice about it. She was unusually upbeat when her husband, Jamison, told her we were going to be visited by a guy named Mason. But she's had a stick up her ass since he arrived. I don't get it, as if she doesn't get enough men."
My brows furrowed as I caught onto what she was saying. "But she's married."
All three of the women laughed. "That's never stopped her before," Sparks said as if it was a usual occurrence around here. "If this Mason guy is your man, you'd better keep him satisfied. Jenna never misses a target when she wants a man."
"Thanks for the warning," I muttered unhappily. I wasn't worried about Mason cheating on me. I was worried about her trying to force herself on Mason. That would be a recipe for disaster. Mason loved me as much as I loved him. There was nothing that would drive us apart.
The food smelled delicious, I couldn't wait to try what these women had been working on. I kept a special eye on Jenna to make sure she didn't try to pull something. If she really was after Mason, I'd have to watch my back until I reeducated her on her manners.
The good mood that had developed with Jenna's absence disappeared when she came back. Their smiled dropped when Jenna's high heels could be heard clinking towards us. All three of the women went back to what they were doing in a rush.
It really made me wonder how much of a tyrant Jenna was.
Humans shouldn't fear us like this. If werewolves were to be exposed and humans saw us as monsters, we would be hunted out by hunters.
"Grab a plate and eat. The men are arriving soon and you guys need to be gone. No visitors until after dark," Jenna snapped rudely.
These poor women, my wolf and I echoed the thought.
The women didn't fight her. I knew the humans had to be gone when the werewolves arrived, but she didn't have to be so rude about it.
Within twenty minutes, the three women and any other humans on the grounds were gone.
There wasn't a way in Hell I was going to stay in the same room as that horrible woman, so I left her alone in the kitchen. I hung around for a second if she asked for help, but I wasn't going to offer again. She could do it herself.
---
I sat in the hammock on the back porch. I barely avoided thinking about what had probably happened on that hammock but kept my eyes on the tree line. The guys would be coming back soon.
Did they know she was bossing around the human women?
What the humans told me stuck. They were being bossed around by that woman. If they fought back, they would probably get hurt. They didn't know they were surrounded by werewolves and I couldn't help but feel for them.
I needed to come up with a plan to knock this woman off her high horse. Not to mention the fact that she had feelings for Mason. That much was obvious. I should ask him about it, but it would be hard talking about his past like that.
I didn't want to meet his past lovers. I knew none of them mattered anymore because he was with me, he wouldn't betray me like that. Mason was a good man.
The wolves started coming into view. They were all still in their wolf forms. I hoped dinner was almost ready. A horde of hungry werewolves wasn't a joy to be around.
Mason walked beside the alpha. I had never seen the alpha as a wolf before, but I knew the wolf was him. He was of a much bigger build than the other wolves, who all looked weak and unable to care for themselves.
Maybe that's why they are allowed to have humans around, I thought as I looked over the wolves. None of these wolves would be dominates. The lesser of the dominate wolves tended to be less violent.
This territory was prime for takeover by a more powerful wolf. The only one who would stand in the way would be the alpha and beta. Two crazed werewolves could make quick work of them.
But the murderous werewolves weren't after the title. If they were, they would've made their move long ago.
When I made eye contact with Mason and couldn't help but smile. He leapt over the railing around the porch with ease, bumping my leg with his huge head as a hello in more of a feline gesture than a wolf.
I reached over and scratched the top of his head. He nipped my calf and watched the wolves as they went into the house. A few wolves lingered in the yard, mock fighting and playing as wolves. It was probably something they didn't get to do often with the humans around.
Once everyone who was going into the house was in, Mason went towards the door. But he didn't go in; he paused and looked back at me.
I smiled and got up from the hammock. He wasn't going to go back in until I followed him, so I did just that. He led me up to the room we would be staying in. Once there, I went into our connected bathroom. I was so glad we wouldn't have to be sharing with anyone else.
He started the change back to human as I started the water.
It was maybe a half an hour when we got out and changed to go back downstairs for some food. When we got to the kitchen, there wasn't much left.
Mason let out an unhappy grunt behind me. I couldn't help but smile. It shouldn't have amused me so, but he's always such a grump after he changes.
Opening the fridge, I spotted leftovers to keep him happy while he waited. I needed to get food into his belly. He leaned against the counter next to the stove as I cooked our dinner and he ate his snack. Every so often he would hold out a bite for me.
It was wonderful to just spend time with him, not talking, just being in each other's presence. But I knew he was sticking so close because there were a lot of unmated males here. They would be attracted to me just because I was unmated as well. When they left, he'd calm down. I just had to wait it out.
That was until Jenna came into the kitchen. She froze momentarily, and then her face burst into a smile. I felt Mason tense up before breathing out unhappily. He didn't want to deal with her, which made me feel better.
There was always the chance that she liked him, but he avoided her, I thought hopefully.
She crossed the kitchen quickly and stopped right in front of him. "I saved a plate of food for you." She glided to the microwave and took out a plate of food.
Definitely obsessed. I rolled my eyes and focused on what I was doing.
From the corner of my eye I saw Mason shrug. "Thank you, but it's alright. Alexia's got me covered."
I smiled at his tone. Mason could make anything into a dirty joke of some kind.
Jenna was quick to recover from the shock of being denied. "But this is ready for you." When I glanced at her, she was smiling at him charmingly.
He held out a forkful of food for me. "Really, Jenna, she's got me."
I could feel her penetrating gaze burning into my back as I took the offered food from Mason. She wasn't happy that she wasn't the one feeding Mason. The grown man could feed himself.
A heavy set of footsteps stopped in the doorway. I didn't have to look over to know that it was the alpha. They tended to exude power. Finn was the only dominate wolf to fully contain all of his influence. He could appear to be totally human if he chose to.
"Why don't you take that plate to your mate, Jenna. He'll eat your food."
"But he's already—"
"Go," he ordered the woman. The only sound from her was her footsteps as she walked away, very unhappily.
I gave Alpha Dean a smile, which he returned before looking at Mason. "Keep an eye on her."
Mason nodded. "I intend to."
I couldn't tell if they were referring to me, or her. He left us alone in the kitchen, sliding out to give us some privacy.
Mason kept his eyes on his food, obviously avoiding me. "So," I led, "want to tell me what it is that I'm missing?"
He took another bite and shook his head. "Don't worry about it baby."
I narrowed my suspicious gaze on him. I would have to figure it out on my own or I would torture it out of him. Either way, I'd figure it out. "Don't talk with your mouth full. It's rude."
He smiled with his teeth covered with food particles. He leaned in. "Why don't you give me a kiss?"
"Yuck." I leaned away from him. "Maybe when you're done eating I'll give you a kiss... Maybe."
He put his plate down before launching at me, with his mouth obnoxiously full of food. His cheeks were puffed out with the stuff.
I should have known what he was doing when he started shoveling it into his mouth. I might have had a chance to get away if I had, but I didn't.
He wrapped one arm around my torso, making it impossible for me to get away with him; he was just too damn strong. His free hand went around the back of my neck, forcing my face towards him.
I braced my hands on his shoulders before our faces slammed together. My arms shook as I tried to keep my face away from his. I couldn't help but laugh and scream as he got closer to me.
He didn't let off, or give me any false hope of breaking free. He steadily brought me closer to him as I screamed and giggled my protests.
Normally, I would've loved the feel of his lips against mine, but this time, I knew what was to follow. I kept my lips sealed. I did not want to be fed like a baby bird.
I kept my scream muffled as the warm, gooey food touched my lips. I heard his laugh as he tried to force feed me his food.
I froze as the food slid between us and collected where our bodies came together.
He gave me a satisfied smile when he let me go.
"You're disgusting."
I tried to get away again, but he only let me go for a second, just long enough for the food to fall between us and end up smashed all over the both of us.
I screamed when I felt the food squeeze between us like glue.
"It's not that bad," he said in a chuckle.
I scoffed. "Maybe to you, this is your food. I'm the one covered in your spit."
He gave me a quick hard kiss. "Oh, please, this isn't the first time you've been covered with my juices." He wiggled his brows suggestively.
My jaw dropped in shock. We were surrounded by werewolves, with fantastic hearing, and he decided to say something sexual.
"Mason!" I chastised. "People can hear you."
He shrugged with disinterest. "Who cares?"
"You can't be going around saying stuff like that. It's not civilized."
Mason laughed. "I'm a werewolf, sweet cheeks. I don't have to be civilized."
The whole pack didn't stick around long. The residents stayed, but changed back to their human forms. And I knew why when a truckload of women showed up.
The human girls were back and quickly snatched up by the eager men. Music started and liquor flowed. This pack was so different than mine. The booze wouldn't really work on the werewolves. Our metabolism is too high. Werewolves would have to drink a lot.
We didn't stick around for long. This wasn't my scene. It hadn’t been since before I joined the police academy. We took our party to our room and stayed there.
