The First Night

"A five-person team! What is he thinking!" Weiss was complaining the second she stepped through our dorm's door.

Blake shrugged and sat down on a bed. "Hey, it could be fun."

Yang plonked down on a bed, smirking. "Hey, at least we're still together, ain't I right, (Y/N)!"

I walked through the door and sat on an unoccupied bed. "True. I mean, we fight pretty well together. Oh, and about the whole 'four girls and one guy' thing we've got going on here. I won't peek. I still wanna graduate from this place."

The girls looked at me for a long time before Weiss spoke up. "At least you have manners."

I scoffed. "Yeah, crazy, am I right? It's not like the heiress of the Schnee company forgets her manners from time to time."

Her eyes lit up. "What do you mean by that!"

Smirking, I sat upside-down against the wall and examined my sword. "..."

"Answer me or else!"

Chuckling, I closed my eyes, put my blade by my bed, and fell asleep. As I slept, I had a weird dream where we were fighting a woman with chalky white skin and blood red veins. There was a farm boy wielding a cane amongst us, and it seemed that he was struggling with something from within. However, before I could get anything else, a shrill sound pierced my ears and woke me up.

"GAH!"

Crashing to the floor, I rubbed my head and glanced up to see Ruby on her knees, holding a whistle in her hand. Knowing what she was about to do, I sighed and took it like a man as she blew the whistle right into my ear.

"Good morning Team RWBY!" She held her fist up into the air.

Weiss, in a similar predicament as me, glared at the other girls while I simply used my Semblance to subtly carry my school uniform over to me. Looking at the girls, I saw them line up and yell "Banzai!" but forgot to angle their hips correctly at first, so it was funny when they fixed that.

Getting up from the floor, I occupied the bathroom and swiftly got dressed. However, before I left the bathroom, I knocked on the door.

"Hey, girls! Is Weiss still changing into her uni-" I heard loud bangs on the door, probably signalling that they just barricaded me in. Shaking my head, I rose my voice just a bit. "I was simply asking so I didn't walk out and into something I would regret!"

Yang responded. "We know! We just had to move your bed and right in front of the bathroom was the only place! Also, yes. Weiss is still changing."

Rolling my eyes, I plonked down on the tiled floor, drew Fang and began to sharpen it. Eventually the door was unblocked and Weiss told me it was safe to come out. Walking out, I drew Fang and used the flat side of the blade to block a bucket that tried to fall on me. Looking down, I saw water and ice cubes spill out it.

"To whoever just set that failed prank up: MAKE SURE THE BUCKET WON'T FALL ALONG WITH THE ICE WATER!" All the girls took a step back, whistling innocently. Pinching the bridge of my nose, I declared I was going on a walk, which was a lie because classes were coming up.

When I arrived at Mr. Port's class, he immediately greeted me. "Why hello there, young lad! Where are your teammates?"

"Either trying to set another prank up for me or decorating the dorm. Probably both."

He chuckled to himself while mumbling "Ah, the energy of youth these days..."

Glancing in the classroom, I saw no one, so I leaned against a row of desks and looked at Port. "Hey, I kinda want to know what sorts of missions you've been on as a Huntsman."

"Why, I have been on countless missions to study Grimm habitats! Care for an extra-credit quiz?" He raised an eyebrow and a smirk snuck onto his mustached face.

"Sure, can't hurt, am I right?"

Port grinned and stood before his blackboard, picking up a piece of chalk as he did. "I will start to draw various kinds of Grimm. You shall guess what Grimm it is and where it lives. Only one guess for each! Ready?" He held his chalk up, eager.

I smirked. "Bring it on."

The first he drew was a Nuckleeve and I correctly "guessed" it before he had even finished with a hoove. Impressed, he moved onto a Deathstalker (Same quick response as before), then a Nevermore, then a Boarbatusk, and as he drew his final picture, a certain combination of words slipped from my mouth.

"A mutated Beowolf."

Port froze mid drawing. "Excuse me?"

My eyes widened, realizing he was trying to draw an Alpha Ursa and that I accidentally said "mutated Beowolf" due to the spikes on its back. "It's... nothing. That's actually an Alpha Ursa. They're well known to live in forests with sweet sap that is also very fragrant. The Forever Falls is one such place."

Port placed his chalk down after finishing the pictures, turning to face me. "You got them right, but your initial answer for the very last one... "

"Yes? What about it?" I began to tense up.

"You called it a 'mutated Beowolf'. Do you know something we don't?"

"Uh, um." I gulped but was saved when Ozpin passed through the door.

"Good morning, Professor Port. Mr. Branwren here used to be in the poor custody of one Dr. Merlot. As a result, he was exposed to the horrors Merlot concocted. I would like to request that you cut him some slack for he is still adjusting to the world outside the lab." At the very end of his statement, Ozpin gave me a wink. My secret was still safe with him.

Port straightened up. "Of course. Now, young lad, go and find a seat. Class will start soon."

Nodding, I sat down and watched as students piled in and my teammates along with JNPR barely got in on time. Port didn't erase the drawings he did for my quiz and I examined them closer, admiring the level of detail he put into them. Suddenly, he asked which one of us thought we were cut out to be a Huntsman/Huntress and my hand shot up as did Weiss's.

"Ah! Two volunteers, eh? Very well. Mr. Branwren, you shall fight one of these beasts first, with Ms. Schnee following after. You may-"

"Don't need to change and I've got my weapon right here." As proof, I drew Fang, holding it over my shoulder.

Port, impressed, waved me down here. Taking my place on the far side of the room, I got ready for the foe as Port grabbed his weapon and made a big show of breaking the lock, finally setting the Grimm free. Quickly taking in my opponent, I saw it was a Beowolf who has lived about two years and was in prime condition. Its skin was also stronger than normal, but not as strong as an Alpha nor mutated Beowolf.

"This one took me a full ten hours to restrain it, let alone track it! Can you beat it, young man?"

With a smirk, I swatted aside all of the Beowolf's attacks, for I was, deep down, a Beowolf at heart and shared the same primal instincts. Quickly, I cut off its legs, then arms and quickly finished it off with a thrust to the head. Smirking in glee, I let the body vanish and Fang return to my back.

"Well fought, well fought indeed! It was as if you knew exactly what it was going to do!"

Rolling my eyes, I thought to myself as Weiss struggled with a Boarbatusk because "she was distracted by Ruby". You can't have everything, miss "I think I'm a Mary Sue, thus I just have to be!" No one gives a damn about what grades you get, it's ACTIONS!

Anyways, Weiss eventually won and I left for my next class, which was Geology with Professor Peach, who also teaches Biology, Organic Chemistry, and Ecology. Woman of many abilities indeed. Our first class had us going to Beacon Cliff and climbing down it to gather rock samples and wouldn't you know! A Nevermore attacked us. If that surprised you, then I hate to say it, but you're an idiot.

As the others were scrambling to get away, I lept onto its back and slammed my sword deep into where I suspected the spine was, close to its neck. Almost immediately it began to plummet, paralyzed, and I lept back onto the cliff, but lost my grip and started to fall. Quickly, Professor Peach grabbed my hand and pulled me up.

"Well done, Mr. Branwren! Well done! Students, continue with the activity."

We gathered the samples and did a few pop questions back in the classroom before the bell rung, signaling that the next class will start soon. Checking my Scroll, I saw it was Combat with Glynda and I couldn't help but smirk.

Running to class, I grabbed my combat attire and saw Glynda standing on the edge of the stage, welcoming us in. Noticing my name on the board along with a syncing Aura meter, I entered the locker rooms and changed into my usual clothes.

As I stepped out, pulling a gauntlet as far down as possible, I muttered to myself. "Wonder who I'll be fighting..."

Looking up, I realized Glynda was standing on the other side of the stage, ready for combat.

"Oh."

Noticing that my Aura had finally synced and my human form's Aura was being measured, I took a deep breath, drew my sword and sunk into fighting stance.

This is gunna be fun.

You don't get to fight, you hear me?

Ugh, fine.

Giving my blade a single twirl, I tried to predict what Glynda's first move would be.
