Chapter 2

(It's the creepy swimming pool picture)

"Your mom is a great cook" Jennie said as we both ate dinner in my room. "learn something from her Keira, she's so much better than you"
"Yeah, shut up" I replied frustrated.
"It's still 8:30. I can't wait for tonight, I really want to hear those dogs howl" said Jennie in her I-can-conquer-the-world tone. "It'll be so cool!" Yeah, she was actually calling it 'cool'!
Night fell and we both were ready to run out of the house. That was Jennie's plan alright; she said in chilling whispers - "If we here the howls then we will silently sneak out of the house to the ground floor." As if she had the guts to do it!
I was thrilled at the beginning, but in no time I started to feel anxious. Time passed by ... 12... 12:30... 1... 1:30...
"Oh c'mon" I said aloud "The howls were a dream, there's no such thing existing for real! I'm so sorry Jennie. Now I guess we should sleep"
"It's okay Keira" said Jennie yawning "I don't mind at all"
I slid under my blanket and she slid besides me. "Good night" she whispered.
"Hope so" I said embarrassed with my foolishness "good night to you"
I woke up at around 3 am. I was wide awake now as I realized why I had woken up. It was the horrifying howls again! I knew I was dreaming, I knew it was not real.
"Hey Jennie, hey?" I placed my hand on her side and felt nothing.
I turned to take a glance at her. To my surprise she was not there! I sat straight on my bed and looked all around my dark room, it took time to adjust my eyes to the darkness but I could make out that she was nowhere. It was probably a dream; anything can happen in a dream so I didn't care about her disappearance.
The horrifying howls filled the air. I got up audaciously, I wanted to know everything about the howls and this was the only way I could. I opened my bedroom door and started walking towards the main door. The house seemed empty except for me. I was shivering as I walked, slowly... steadily...towards the main door.
I stopped in front of the door and looked through its eyepiece. Nothing. The corridor was dim and empty. Suddenly, along with the howls I heard breathing! Whoever or whatever it was, I could make out was right behind me!
I huffed, my heart beat grew faster. I felt someone keep a hand on my shoulder. I had frozen and had no mettle to take a look. I was then swung around by the one who caught me, I breathed so hard that it felt as if my lungs would burst.
"Keira what are you doing out here?" someone whispered.
"Jessie? Is...is that you?!" I guessed.
"Whom do you expect it to be then? Of course it's me!" she half-whispered.
"You scared me to death!" I shoved her hard. She had nearly killed me! "You'll really give me a heart attack some day, well, what are you doing in my dream?"
"Huh, your dream?" she asked.
"Yes...you're in my dream" I confirmed.
"Ugh!" Jennie groaned, covering her face with her hands "this is no dream you dreamer, this is reality!" She caught my left hand and pinched it hard.
"Ahhh" I shrieked "what the-"
"See!" she shook me "you were right. The howls are real!" I absorbed what she was saying and it was no dream as we heard those terrifying howls...both of us!
"B...But what're you d...doing out here?"
"I was awaken by the howls around 2:45, I decided not to wake you up so..."
"...you came out by yourself?" I completed her sentence angrily. She nodded shyly. "How could you? This was my mystery, and I-" I stopped as I heard a sound coming from outside the front door. I glanced at Jennie in confusion, I could make out that she heard it too.
"K...Keira...what is that?" she stammered.
Then we heard barking and howling altogether, but this time from right outside the main door! I boldly saw through the eyepiece and then I saw, what I never expected, but the answer to my question!
There in the dim corridor were four huge, black Labradors crying out their lungs! As big as wolves, as horrifying as dead wolves and as dangerous as werewolves! I stared in disbelief as they turned towards my main door and started towards it. I let out a shriek and backed away from the door.
"W...What is it?" Jennie asked in a trembling voice. I started to answer but the dogs started banging the door. They scratched and clawed at the door with their full strength. They wanted to enter my house! We let out a shriek as the dogs cried and howled at the top of their lungs and continuously banged the door!
"Where's your dad?" Jennie asked aloud.
"He's out of country for some job" I said aloud as the howling grew more deafening.
"Then where's your mom?!"
I ran toward mom's room and turned the door knob but it was locked from inside.
"Mom! Open up!" I shrieked and banged at her door. Even Jennie did the same "Mrs. Dawson!" she kept on shrieking as the howls were no longer resistible.
Mom finally opened the door "What is going on here?!" she shouted
"Mom the dogs are..." I stopped, something was wrong. What happened to the howls? The banging and scratching? Nothing, silence...
"What's up with you girls?" mom crossed her hands and looked very tired and sleepy.
"Mrs. Dawson, did you hear the howling and banging?" Jennie asked eagerly.
"Yeah, so?" my mom said normally "that howling isn't going to harm you or anything!" Oh how wrong was she! We didn't even have any proof that the dogs were out there and were probably very terrifying. We were given a big lecture on being awake late at night.
I angrily slammed my bedroom door behind me. "How can she do that to me? Doesn't she have faith in me?"
"It's okay" said Jennie in a sad tone "if my mom were in her place, even she wouldn't have believed in me...in us"
"You saw that right?" I shook a fist at her "Now you know I was not kidding"
"I always believe you; I always knew you told the truth. Except when you say I'm nuts" she smiled.
"This is no time for jokes!" I shouted "we've got to do something"
"Well, what we've got to do right now is sleep" she was serious now, I agreed to her decision as it was already 3:35.
According to her plan we had to be awake all night and so we had a good sleep in the afternoon, so none of us could sleep well.
We dressed in sweater and jeans when we got up the next day. It was 5:30 in the morning when we had our breakfast, silently. It was a cold Saturday morning and the sun wasn't up the horizon yet. It was as dark as night. After breakfast Jennie and I went over to mom to ask if we can go down for a walk.
"Okay, but what happened to you girls last night?" my mom asked seeming less mad at us.
"Nothing...just bad dreams" I said knowing that my mom wouldn't understand. I then pulled Jennie out of the house.
We started taking walks round my building. None of us spoke anything. Our hairs swished in the cold morning breeze. Then we turned left and started toward the back of my building. Silence... We had seen a few people at the front but there was no one here at the back.
"What should we do?" Jennie asked breaking the silence. She looked at the ground and kicked stones as we walked.
"I...I don't know" I said "I'm sorry you had to get involved in this mess"
We then entered the swimming area. I noticed sign saying 'no entry' at the gate in red block letters but we entered anyway. We sat on a lounge chair next to the swimming pool. Then something in the water in the pool caught my attention.
"Oh my God!" I exclaimed poking Jennie in her shoulder "J...Jennie!"
Jennie then saw what I was pointing to and covered her mouth with her hands. Four big-black Labradors lay on the bed of the pool in the water!
"They are the ones, the ones I saw last night in the corridor!" I said as a cold chill ran down my spine.
"They are the ones?" Jennie said sounding more frightened than ever "a...are they dead?"
"Maybe...or maybe not!" I said and pulled her out of the swimming area.
"Whoa, where are we going?"
"To get help!"
"Security!" we both called out as we ran to the front of the building.
"What? What is it?" the watchman asked eagerly.
We both huffed and puffed "We..." I huffed "We saw dead dogs...in the swimming pool!"
"You girls went in the swimming area!"
"But the dogs are- " Jennie started.
"Didn't you read the 'no entry' sign I attached to the gate?!" the watchman had really lost his temper. Why didn't he care about the dogs? Why was he so not concerned about us entering the swimming area?
"C'mon!" I started to pull him towards the swimming area "maybe we can save them"
"No wait!" the watchman blurted out.
"What? Do you want them to die?" I asked annoyed.
"They're already dead!" he yelled "You can't save them now!"
"How'd you know?" Jennie narrowed her eyes at him "Unless you hurt them..."
"Wait what?" I looked at her.
"You killed them didn't you?" she eyed the guard with rage.
"This is ridiculous...I mean...you can't blame anything on me" the guard, shocked by her sentence. I was too. I mean, how's that possible? I've known this guard for long, he wouldn't do anything like that.
"What're you saying Jen?"
"So Keira? Do you expect the dogs to jump in the pool themselves?" Jennie yelled "Besides, he didn't look a bit surprised when we told him and he's the one guarding the building when everyone's asleep. Also, he just said he was the one who put up that 'no entry' sign. That sign wasn't there yesterday..."
My mouth dropped open as I glanced back at the guard and he glared at Jennie with sharo, piercing eyes and without snapping back.
"Why would you do that you jerk?!" Jennie took a step toward him.
"Uh...because those dogs drove me nuts! Every time I shooed those dogs away, they'd come back at night ruin my sleep and-" he assured.
"You sleep on your night duty?" I gave him a death-glare "And you just...killed them?"
"How could you do that!" Jennie cried "we'll complain of you!"
"Oh you won't!" saying that the guard stepped towards us with his hands outstretched as if about to grab us! Both of us shrieked and ran towards the garden.
A few people saw us running away from the watchman and they caught him. He had to explain whatever he did with the four Labradors and he was kicked out of the job.
Jennie and I later came to know that watchman tracked the dogs everyday so they let out those howls, last night they ran into that corridor and clawed at our apartment door to save themselves from this man and at the same night he threw them into the water in the pool...and the poor Labradors died! I should've let them in my house last night, or...maybe not. But, there was nothing like ghosts or anything. We were both freaking out unnecessarily!
That night we slept soundly. But, around 2:45 I woke up again by horrifying howls! I knew this was one of my foolish senseless dreams again. I then turned to take a look at Jennie. She was also awake then she pinched me hard on my arm.
"Ahhh, why you?" that hurt.
"Do you hear the howls?!" asked Jennie.
