Chapter 2/6
Day gradually turned into night as Jordan lay on his couch. He thought about his earlier visit with Christi, and how she looked slightly worse than the prior time they met. At least she remembered his name at the end of their conversation. Jordan looked at his laptop, trying to determine what words or phrases rhymed with "all-nighters". As strange as it seemed to people, he enjoyed exercising his gift with words. In prior times, he was a lyricist, rapper, and YouTube personality, but he ultimately decided to retire for several reasons. Not only did he create controversy with his dark and disturbing subject matter, he also didn't enjoy being famous and wanted to spend more time together with Christi. Jordan stayed focused as the sound of a car approaching broke the silence. It was time again. He took a deep breath and waited for the inevitable. Soon, a woman entered through his door. She was 39 years old, blonde, and with brown eyes. Her face had wrinkles from scowls that never went away. She looked tense as she entered the living room.
Jordan ignored her deep glares. Perhaps she would assume he was oblivious to her presence and just walk away. A deliberate cough from the woman put an end to his plan. She knew better than to think he never noticed her standing there. "You're home early" Jordan said. "Unfortunately ... for you, at least" she responded. Jordan sighed and sat up. "What's your problem?" he asked. She started at him with visible irritation. "Oh, I dunno... maybe I'm just getting fed up with you is all" she retorted. "Jesus Christ; what now?" "Well, I was visiting Christi, and turns out, you lied about being married to your own wife! Again! What the hell are you trying to do to me?!" Jordan became agitated. "Hold up, hold up, hold up; you know she always forgets things, so don't go pointing your finger at me!" This defense particularly angered the woman. "I'm not stupid! I reminded her that I'm your wife, and she got confused, because she thought your wife was someone different! Why do you keep lying to us?!"
The woman had a hint of sadness in her eyes, and Jordan noticed. "Chloe, listen to me. I know things have been rough lately, but I wouldn't have married you if you weren't the woman that I loved from years ago. Maybe I haven't always been truthful towards Christi, but I promise you I've always told her we're married. There are some things she doesn't need to know... or remember, I guess... but she knows I married you". Chloe looked rather apprehensive, but her voice was calmer. "OK, fine; maybe you haven't been lying about us... but you said you've lied to her about other stuff; tell me everything you haven't been truthful about". Jordan took a deep breath before responding. "Alright. She asked about her prior life, you know, back when she was on TV. She wanted to know more about what she was involved in. Um... I didn't really wanna go into details, so I basically just said the show was crazy, but she was my favorite mother". "Why didn't you elaborate? Me competing at competitions was a huge part of my life, and same for her". "Yeah, but there's a bunch of awful stuff she doesn't need to remember". "Like what?" she asked. "Seriously? How about all the verbal and mental abuse you two went through? Or the blatant favoritism you battled every single day? And you remember what Abby said about your silent sinus syndrome, right?" "Of course I do, but she got karma... and just because things weren't always fun doesn't mean we don't owe our success to being famous".
Jordan sat on his couch and looked thoughtfully out the window. "Maybe... I just don't believe it's a good idea putting negative memories into Christi's brain, especially not with how she's doing now". Chloe sat down on the opposite end of the couth. "Well, I don't believe it's a good idea robbing your mother-in-law of her identity; it's not fair you get to cherry-pick what you want her to remember". These words especially hurt Jordan. "Listen... I just want what's best for her; that's all". Chloe tapped her foot as she looked at Jordan. "What else?" "She also asked about Deborah. I already knew Christi had a terrible childhood, and I didn't wanna rehash it, so I pretended Elizabeth was her mother instead. Honestly though, Christi's grandmother was more or less her mother throughout her childhood; Deborah and James had her way too young, and they were far from being loving parents. I told Christi her mother died awhile ago, but she loved her, and she always did the best she could for her. Obviously, you and I don't agree on what to mention to her, but I genuinely don't believe I did anything wrong". "Look, I get it, but I'd really appreciate it if you didn't lie to her, or me, about stuff. I know you think I'm sabotaging her mental health, but I'm not comfortable taking advantage of her like that. Whenever she asks me any questions, I'll tell the truth. Maybe I can work on being kinda vague with my answers, or not being the first one to bring up certain subjects, but I just can't lie to her. I hope you understand where I'm coming from". Jordan took a deep breath as he looked into Chloe's eyes. "Yeah... I'll try my best". Chloe stood up. "I'm going upstairs; I love you". Jordan hesitated for a moment. "I love you, too". Shortly after Chloe left, he continued working on his lyrics.
