Chapter 2

Suspect #1.

The Supervisor.

My work boss, Kenny, was a pretty chill guy. Not necessarily the type to commit murder. But really, how much can you know about a person? Maybe he had the capacity to do that. I had my doubts though. Kenny liked me.

He had started out as a Guest Service Coordinator just like me, but had worked his way up to the lead. Lead is a fancy word for department head. Not one to bother with too many meetings, he was a good boss. Hilton wanted us to train a lot. And by train I mean sit through endless videos and webinars. But Kenny would let us do work through those. I liked him.

I knew he had a family and that they were trying for anther baby, he and his wife, but beyond that I didn't know much else about his personal life. He was a very chill and secretive guy. Right now he sat at his desk at work, waiting for the police detectives to show up.

"Leilani....good lord. I can't believe you died that way."

They say you can talk to the dead and they will hear you from the grave or wherever dead people go. Be it heaven or hell or purgatory. Beliefs vary when it comes to this. But me...well, I am here still. And I can hear every word people are saying. It was true.

Kenny seems sad.

"If only I had asked you to come in earlier yesterday. Maybe..."

I instantly feel sad hearing his words. Another emotion I was capable of still. I didn't wish that on him. There was no reason to be sad for me, I was gone. There wasn't anything he could do about it now.

"Tio! Come in here please."

Tio was my coworker. It was just the three of us in the Guest Service Coordinator office area. Kenny had a real office though, with a door and windows.

They talk for a bit about what job duties they would both absorb, given my passing. It was again, weird. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought one day I'd just be gone. Not this young anyway. No more living. No more working. I just ceased to exist.

"Eventually we will look to hire a replacement, but for now, we can manage her workload. I haven't answered guest complaints in years! It'll be fun."

I laugh. Fun? Kenny forgot most of the things guests say. For sure he forgot. Guests can be the most condescending, rude, judgmental people there are! Even the nice ones, they harbor deep seated anger over not enough towels and the lobby not having free snacks. It's surprisingly hard to think up new ways to pacify them.

Why had I stayed at this job for so long? I ponder this as I watch Kenny flip open his screen to a travel site. He groaned audibly. Yep. He forgot how guests can be.

"Leilani....good grief."

🩸

The two detectives show up again. Homicide duo for the Honolulu Police Department. I like them though, for some reason they invoke feelings of calm and authority. Maybe they would solve my murder soon. Then I could move on. To wherever my parents were.

The thought flooded me with hope.

Kenny appears to be cooperating. He offers the two men a seat across from him in his office and shuts the door. The detectives are void of emotion, only looking at Kenny and then they take notepads out. No facial expressions are evident to give away their inner thoughts. They could make a killing in any poker game.

"I have no idea who could have done this. Leilani was liked here by everyone."

Detective one looks at detective two and then back at Kenny.

"Where were you yesterday morning?"

Kenny shifts uncomfortably in his chair, which was odd because he loved that chair. In fact, he special ordered it on his own dime and said he could live in it if he had too.

"I was here."

"What time did you get here?"

"6 am. The employee parking garages cameras would show that."

The detectives give each other another glance. Void of any emotion still. Damn they are good. Kenny squirms some more. Why is he doing that?

"We saw the tape already. You did arrive here early, but it was around 5:45, not quite 6."

"I guess I was here a bit before that. My wife woke me super early and everything, you know what being married with a small kid is like..."

Detective number one fingers his wedding band and keeps the blank look.

"Where did you go when you got into the hotel?"

Kenny gulps, a small gulp, but it was noticeable.

"I....I came up to my office."

"You didn't right away."

More fidgeting and moving around in his chair. Sheesh. Kenny was hiding something! What though, I couldn't imagine.

"I went to say good morning to a coworker."

"You must have done more than that because you were gone for over an hour."

"I....we...Lila and I....we had to go over some things for work, and we had coffee. The usual office stuff."

"After you were finished with Lila, did you come right up?"

"Yes. Right up. I know because it was 7:15 am when I sent the first email of the day. I can show you.."

Detective number two puts his hand up and gives a quick shake of his head. They apparently weren't interested in seeing the emails.

"That's all we have for now Kenny. We will contact you should we have any other questions."

"Oh, ok. You don't want to talk about Leilani?"

The two detectives stand and shake Kenny's hand.

"We'll be in touch."

🩸

I am torn between following the detectives and staying with Kenny. Either way, I want to know why Kenny was seeing Lila of all people!

"Hey....have a pair of detectives come to see you yet?"

Kenny just made the choice for me. He is on the phone with someone. I am going to find out who.

"Well...they were here talking to me! And they know I came to see you yesterday morning!"

Lila. He was talking to Lila. She is the head of HR or human resources. And she is very very married. As was Kenny.

"Calm down, they couldn't know what we were doing. You don't have cameras in your office do you?"

"I don't know. They weren't implying anything, they just knew that I was in your office for over an hour."

"Yes. Yes. I know. I told them that I was there to go over work stuff and to have coffee. That is perfectly plausible and reasonable."

Lila is clearly freaking out and not in a good way. She is talking loudly but not loud enough for me to catch what she is saying.

"Lila. Calm down. Our spouses don't need to know. They won't know. Who is going to tell them?"

"The police only want to find a motive and a killer. We don't have a motive....and we didn't kill her."

I listen as they detail their individual fears over getting caught having an affair. I couldn't believe Kenny would do that to his wife. Truly. He seemed to love her so much, and they were planning for more kids. She was his high school sweetheart for gods sake. It is all so....cliché.

Lila on the other hand, I pegged her for the type to cheat the moment I met her when I got hired. She was far too friendly with the male employees and far too snotty to the females. I never got too close to her for that reason. They make an odd coupling. I hope it isn't serious.

"We don't have to stop seeing each other. Lila, you are making too much out of this."

"I know babe....but...."

Kenny abruptly hangs up and exhales. He is stressed out more than I have ever seen him. Was he that into Lila that this was making him feel this way? Good grief.

"Leilani, if you hadn't have died....none of this would be happening!"

Well then.

I wasn't sure how I even died yet, except that I fell. Like I could have stopped it or something. Stupid Kenny. He was being a cheating bastard and now blamed me for the demise of his tryst with Lila!  I feel anger bubble up to the surface. Anger, another emotion I was still capable of.

I thought I knew him so well, and I had even admired him.

Just goes to show you that you can never ever really know someone.

Kenny picks up his cell phone this time and places a call.

"Hey baby. I was wondering if you want me to bring home some sushi for dinner tonight? Yes...the kind you really like."
