Chapter 32
Some feelings are hard to describe. And this...has to be one of them. It's not the feeling of nothing, but something close to it.
This... It feels good. I'm floating, in nothingness. My senses have fallen asleep and all I can feel is a fuzzy sensation that is intoxicating.
I don't feel the flow of time. It is as if I am one with eternity. Don't we all want that though? To escape from the clutches of continuity and find peace in perpetual harmony? It's just my mind, and peace.
I don't know how long I've been here. I don't bother. Because, nothing has felt more like home. I'm sure. Not even my home. There are no worries. No tangible objects. It's all abstract... here. But even the concepts, feel out of reach.
How numb am I? Is this alright? Or am I defeating the purpose by worrying when I shouldn't be?
How long has it been? How did I get here?
Does it even matter?
The only thing I feel is peace with myself. And it must be the most beautiful sensation. I should cherish this, until eternity grows jealous of me.
I don't know how long it takes but, after sometime, I sense the feeling change. My senses start coming back. It's hard to describe how, but, I'm made aware of it. The first to come, is my sight.
Or... was it always there. Only obstructed?
It must be so. Because, there is a shift, that I notice.
A black fluid that kept me cozy, lifts off of me. It's a mist. It ceases cradling me, and lets me in, to the light. A confusing light.
I had forgotten breathing. So, when I try, I get surprised. Here, I need not breathe.
Because, here, I don't own a body. I hover. There's a me. But, only my consciousness.
Colours and ideas meld together around me. Concepts, deities...
I'm there. The Holy Trinity. And...
I look down. There it is, the spiral. I look above. There it is, again.
How long have I been stranded here for? What am I doing?
Have I been high on the positive energy this realm provided me with? Because that seems troubling...
Space buddy...
The black mist, now coalesced to form a sphere, comes into my purview.
We've been recovering, so he says.
And then he starts moving me along with him. Suddenly, I feel much more... whole. Ah, so...that's what's been happening.
However, I feel longing. I feel a foreign sensation. What is...
"...dan."
"Huh?"
It's happening.
The world spins. The spiral churns, suddenly active. It cascades through me, around me, passing me by faster than I can fathom. I fall into the eye, keep falling. Fractals all around. Then black, white and golden, peeking through, an audience. And copper, a foreign entity, hiding behind.
"Jordan." It's clearer now. Someone's been calling me.
A sudden chill runs wild. It can't be. It is not possible. How can-
I fall out of the eye. It felt so short. Like that time before...
I fall onto the infinite plane. I touch down. I stand to behold my hands and feet. Here, I'm whole, completely. I have a body.
Taking a look around, there are the temples. In ways that don't make sense. They intersect, while staying separate; dimensional overload. Above, below, in front, behind, right and left, the sight is the same.
But, there is a breeze. A familiar, warm breeze.
Concentrate.
I have...been here before.
No. You've been shown what is here. You haven't been here before.
Let that be true. But I, I stick out. More so than before. Like that first time I met them.
This is the next step.
"Jordan!"
My non-existent heart skips a beat. That voice... If it's reality. If any of this is...
I concentrate. I churn Yttr, inside me. Channel it. Forge a stronger connection with my psyche, and pass it on to Space buddy.
More, you're doing well, brother.
I give force into it, nearly breaking myself apart. No. No. Stay whole. You must.
It's changing. Accept this change!
I groan, I wince. And then, suddenly, my eyes open. And what I behold is...
"P-paradise."
It's a sunny land. Lush green. But no grass. Where is the sun? There are temples, now in how we perceive them, normally. And then-
Then through the blurry glow of this world, I see beings. Out of reach.
Foreign leaves are blown, and they rush past me, once again, like that time.
But, the more I walk towards them, the further apart they get.
So that's how it is. The truth is yet, out of your grasp.
I curl my fingers in. Because, at the moment, all I need to know, is a different truth.
I turn around. And then I break into a sprint. My feet sink into the terrain, soil wet with freshness I've never known. But, my focus, my all, is directed towards the voice.
"You're here... Oh my... You did it. Jordan!"
I gasp. I run. I choke on the sweet sensation that floods within me. I run with all I've got.
Something blurry enters my vision. A form.
Is it real?
It is running. It is running towards me.
Somehow, I run faster. Surreal. All of this is surreal. If it is not real, then reality is cruel. The gods are cruel.
"Jordan!"
We get closer. Closer and closer.
Until suddenly- I embrace a form all too familiar to me. A smell, more intoxicating than the fuzzy feeling before. Warmth, more welcoming than anything. Anything at all.
Beautiful blonde locks tickle against my skin. And wet drops trickle down my cheeks. In a stream. They don't stop.
Because, my mind can't comprehend this happening. How can it. How can it. How can it! How!!
"Tiana, is that really you?" I look at her face. One I've been longing to see, ever since I received this blessing. She is my goal. In my past life. And in this life.
And now she stands before me? In my arms? How?!
"I... I found you, Jordan! I knew you would awaken it the same way. Why did it take so long for me to find you? ... Why... And you IDIOT!" she punches me. "Couldn't you have found me any faster? Where were you? I've been searching for you... all this time... It hasn't been easy. It hasn't been easy at all!" She wraps her arms around me, and buries her head. Tiana cries.
I reach my hands shakingly out to hold her. And when I touch her, feel how real she is, it sends shivers through my body. I pull her in tightly, and then I cry along with her. "Tell me this isn't a dream. Tell me you're real. That this is happening."
She laughs in my arms. "It's real, silly. It is. But, maybe not real enough." She looks up at me, runs her hand through my hair. "But now I know. I know you are here, with me. You can be. You have made it."
My eyes shake with emotion. "Does that mean, you as well... " I look at her, but don't spot any anomaly.
But she does. "I see." She takes my left hand in between her palms. It's odd. I didn't even realise when Space buddy became my hand again.
"Then how can you... "
I notice it. Oh I do. And my feet shake. I'm wearing white. She's wearing black. But it's just not any black.
It's the black fabric.
"It's so much more, Jordan. I wish I could tell you. But I... " she smiles, then proceeds to playfully punch me on the chest. It doesn't hurt. In fact, it feels good. It makes me feel alive. Like before. "I know now we'd find each other."
"How? Where are you? Where is everyone?" The questions come out of my mouth without tax.
Instead of answering, she stares at me longingly for a moment, and then she snickers. "I've found someone very special to you. I'm sure you've been looking for her."
Hearing that, I frown. Who is she referring to? "I don't know who you're talking about."
She makes an annoyed expression and places her hands on her hips. "Some little brother you are. I'll tell on you to Helena." Crossing her arms, she turns her head to the side. "Hmph!"
...
I blink.
Wait, did I hear that correctly?
I blink. I blink more. And then I gape at her. "What did you say?! You found big sis?!" The news sets off explosions inside me. "But you never got to meet her!"
She faces me, smiles, and nods, eyebrows curling up in pride. "Exactly."
"Whatever do you mean?!"
She deadpans at me. "Seriously?" With an audible exhale, she then flicks my forehead. "Maybe you should rest some more, you doofus."
Ouch.
But regardless, the longing in her eyes, reflect mine. We stare into each other's eyes again. "You know how much I missed you, right?" I say to her, our heads close to each other.
"I'd have it no other way," she teases.
I passionately study her pretty face. How long it's been since I've seen her up close. It feels like a lifetime, especially since I lost my memories. She might as well have been a dream instead of a memory.
But no. She's here. And she's with me. "Tiana, tell me. How would you find me?"
Upon hearing my question, she is the one to blink this time, a blank look on her face. Only to break out laughing the very next moment. "You're still behind me on this one, Jordan! Figures, why it took so long to contact you."
What now? I grit my teeth and raise a finger at her. "You've got no right to say that! We were shot at by a monster! I'm surprised to still have a functional consciousness. I really wonder how my body is doing."
Now, she looks concerned. "Really?"
"Yes ma'am!" I kind of feel like, it's not what she expected to hear. Well of course not. Who'd expect their partner to be chased to death by a monster?
That said, one thing is for certain. I'm still lagging behind like she pointed out. I need to hone my powers. I need to be able to control Yttr better. If only I was more capable. Then maybe, nothing would have happened.
"I have faith in you, Jordan," she caresses my cheek. "And I know, we'd change destiny. We have to. Because we are special."
Upon hearing that, a certain light ignites within my eyes. "No doubt about that."
But then, a bit abnormally, she frets. She becomes troubled. "I can't help but notice it. Something about this place is surely wrong..." She grabs onto my white garment. "Don't you sense it as well, Jordan?"
It doesn't take me much time to get what she's talking about. I wrap my arm around her waist, and pull her body in close. "It's the Lost Eternal."
"What?"
"I'm sorry. It's not safe."
And then I realise. It would never be safe.
The copper tinge lingers.
"Tiana, I have to tell you something. I am not alone here."
With a frantic rush and growing horror she looks around. "But how can that be? I called you. Only you. There shouldn't be anyone else!"
"But you feel the presence, don't you?"
She looks at me, her face grown pale, eyes terrified.
"I'm not alone, in my head. The Lost Eternal, he is coming back. And he is coming back using me."
The copper tinge intensifies.
A quantum's passing, and a sudden shockwave envelops us. It blows leaves in chaotic fashion, turns the breeze into strong gales. A voice booms all around us. "That's the deal you chose to make. You're a vessel of mine."
I grow stiff. That voice. "What deal? I don't remember anything of that sort!"
There's a gloom that spreads through the land. "Because, you thought it was a mere dream. But it was not. That was the deal, for getting your precious Space buddy back."
I feel my body grow hot. "But this isn't purpose! Is it? It's anything but!"
"So I told you, the last time you were shown here... " the voice slowly fades away. "And yet, here I am."
"You're not making any sense!"
"Isn't that funny! That's how absurd it all is. Rebel against it. I am the rebellion. I am what is required to turn it all against the head. This is the new purpose. The lack of one. This was the exchange!"
"Then why did they allow it... Surely, they don't want this. They don't want you!"
"Jordan! What is happening?!" Tiana squirms in my arms, terribly frightened. Because this is nothing short of a calamity. A waking apocalypse.
"It's the end, Tiana. It's the end. But, I won't let it end! I would change destiny. Like you said." I look deep into her eyes. "And now I have you. Won't you help me as well?"
Her lip quivers. Her eyes shake. But then, her mouth forms a thin line. "I promised to stay by your side Jordan. Because, you changed me. And so I will!" She's frightened, but has the same resolve that made me admire her the first time. Tiana is strong. And even if she is frightened, she'd stand her ground. That's how she is.
And that's how I have to be.
"It's amusing to see your partner. She has got something that makes me curious. The gods are sure playing well, this time."
"You didn't answer me! What was the deal for?!"
The winds continue to blow as the voice grows silent for a moment. Until, it responds back. "I slipped in."
"Huh?"
"It's just like I said. I slipped in. Your deal was the assertion of purpose. The acceptance. And I rebelled against it. I fought for tomorrow to never come. Couldn't have found a more fitting host, don't you think?" He guffaws. "I was always here, ever since last time, drifting endlessly. Trapped in this place for a seeming eternity. But then, the chance came. Your second chance, that is. Something that doesn't happen too often. It's surprising how it happened two times in this short while...You lost your blessing and tried to reconnect. It called you back, but you were without your vessel. And that allowed me to take over. The gods, they never allowed this. This happened because it could. There was no purpose to it! That is why I'm here!" The place explodes. "You'd all see. It's an illusion. Everything. There is no meaning to it. So there's a lack of purpose. Rebel against it!"
The ground quakes. The bells toll. And in that process-
-Tiana is ripped away from me.
"Tiana!"
"Jordan!"
The plane breaks. Existence bends.
Space buddy turns back into a black mist, shielding me from the catastrophe. All light is sucked out, as my vision is wrapped in black.
Like strands of hair, it partitions the world in two.
But, just before it closes, I behold something truly inconceivable. I slam my face towards the gaps just so I could confirm for certain what I've seen. Because it is...
"What happened to you while I was gone, Tiana? What have you become?"
The last shred of light that reaches me, shows me the unthinkable.
Tiana transforms. She becomes-
_____________
My eyes shoot open. I behold darkness. There's no strength at all left in my body. I pant. I heave. Sweat profuses throughout my body, and I'm drenched in it. My body feels weird. My skin is-
-!
I stop hyperventilating. I notice myself. I bring my face down close to examine my body. My skin. It's scaly. Greenish.
The burns.
Oh my god. I am back. I am back in the real world. I am alive. I made it back. I really did.
But that means... I catch my head, grit my teeth, and wince. It's over. It came undone. "No... Tiana."
There at the last... What happened afterwards? Is she safe? I hope she made it back safely. I really hope she did. But what was that at the end? Did it really happen?
I remember it. The way it happened. She changed. She did. Was that to fight with the Lost Eternal? What happened after that?
My mind is in chaos. But sitting here and speculating won't do me any good. I have to move. I need to...do something. I have to find her. I just... have to.
Somehow, with all that I've got, I swing my legs to the side of the surface I'm laying on. It's the familiar marble. But this place. It's different. Why is it so dark? It never got dark back in the lab. Never.
I breathe in, then breathe out. Instead of calming down, my heart beats frantically. I can't sit straight. Ohhh... I tumble. My head starts to sway. My vision gets blurry. And I fall back on the bed. My head hits the foreign beige material on top of the marble acting as a pillow like before. I pant against it, sweat again. It's not exactly soft, more like padding.
Why is my body like this? Did it damage me to that extent?
You need to rehabilitate, brother.
I take in huge amounts of air and my body sweats a tremendous amount. It's taken a toll on me. It sure has. I'm weak. Oh so weak. And if that's the case... rehabilitation, huh?
So, that means, I won't be able to walk normally, now? Is that it? I won't be able to do anything for that matter?
I think so. Your body has somehow recovered. So at this point, I think you should continue to rest. Rest, till you can move normally again.
My breathing stabilises and I can finally catch my breath. Sweet chesses... Oof! I close my eyes shut and lay there for a while. I try to bring a calm wave over me. I try to concentrate.
The transformation...
But, I can't stay like that for long. My mind is not in the finest of states. So, I open my eyes again and look up, at the ceiling.
"Wow... " My voice is weak. Not even in a subtle way, it's very obvious. It's as if I haven't spoken in a long time. As for my expression, the subject of my wonderment is the very thing I'm seeing.
The darkness above me. It's not static. There are things moving, there... But, it's blurry.
I need my glasses.
I turn over to the side with great effort- almost all of what I can put out without forcing my body to go into a shock like earlier.
I find there's a cabinet beside me. But that's not all. There are silhouettes all around, objects. And then there's a boundary.
I fumble with the drawers until I feel something familiar and flimsy between my fingers. With a bit of caution, I take it out and slide it over my nose.
The world clears up.
"No way... " I knew it. I wasn't seeing things. What moved in the darkness above- it was nothing but clouds! I've been looking at the sky! And it's not an unobstructed view either. It's a clear glass dome above, I reckon.
This may seem ordinary at first. But it's not. No it's not! Not anymore...
"If it's night right now, then... "
It never changed. The sky. It used to be turquoise with pink clouds floating, and the sun used to be at the same position. It was like that for weeks! For it to be night...
"How long was I unconscious for...?"
_____________
The scary realisation runs rounds in my mind. The implications are beyond concerning. Does that mean Billy is beyond saving? That I just slept through months, or possibly years?!
"No! No way!" That can't be! No it can't be!
I grab a handful of my hair. Then, I gasp. This is...
My hair is grown out. More than it's ever been... It touches my shoulders. And then...
I have a massive growth of beard.
"They turned me into a goddamned caveman!" I yell. My voice sounds raw, feral.
Brother, I'm sure they have barbers here...
Like hell! I don't think they have a job anymore if I'm like this already!
Maybe this could be the new look of the century?
It came back into fashion after the ice age?! Talk about a comeback!
No matter how you see it, this is inexcusable.
You're really gonna fuss about your hairstyle now instead of how you're still alive and kicking?
I'm thankful for being alive don't get me wrong. But I am not kicking!
Oh right... My oh my, I think I got carried away.
I sigh. I really need to find more about my circumstances. But hey, given the length of the days, and the night to have arrived, shouldn't my hair and beard be longer?
Maybe they gave you a cut somewhere in the middle?
Yeah, and then their freaking baber's license got cancelled, I presume.
Maybe, that's why they thought it'd be best to let it grow out until someone else tries again.
I slap my face. This is hurting my head, and I just woke up after a months long sleep.
Upon opening my eyes again, I take a look around. The silhouettes that are far are too dark to make out properly. But, there's one that's standing right beside me.
My heart skips a beat when I take in the sight.
"Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes."
In the pitch black darkness, metallic clawed arms stare back at me, motionless.
That description is so off-putting, honestly.
Well, it's my lovely caretaker! Howdy hoo!
I fumble my way to grab one of the arms and then pull the rover towards me. "I should get it right this time as well... " I stretch my arm out and around it. My hand slips behind it's body and after a bit of further fumbling, my fingers dig inside at a place. "Gotcha!" I dig them in deeper until, with a flick, the claws light up and the entire dome is enlightened by my bright mind. "Haha! I'm too good! Let my grandeur shine upon you!"
The machine tries to back away upon realising it's in my death grip. "Oh, oh. Not so fast! You've more work to do buddy."
It panics and throws it's arms around, to get my hands off of it. But, keeping my death grip intact, slowly, I slide off of the bed, trying my best to not cause too much stress to develop in my body. Until-
"Whoaaaah!" I drop down from the bed and land on it. Thankfully, I didn't crash per se, and it's still standing upright, albeit, traumatised I'd bet. My body gets hotter upon the action and I start sweating again. My head starts spinning. So, I hold on to my trusted caretaker for a few extra minutes for me to get back to normal. And once I do, we're ready to roll!
"But before that, I think I'll have some water." Using one of its arms, I shine my light onto some jugs kept to the side of my bed that are most probably refills to be fed into the channel.
Using the claws I remove the seal on it, then chug it down. The sensation of drinking fills me with so much satisfaction, I can hardly begin to explain it, since, technically I'm drinking water after months(hopefully). After I have emptied more than a third of it, I set it to the side, wipe my mouth and then steer the rover in the direction of a door. First it refuses to budge, rolling its wheels in reverse, but when I push onwards, it loses all hope of fighting against a caveman, and eventually rolls forward.
And what a pleasant surprise, after a while, it starts to accelerate and it's like I'm driving a shopping cart with a motor. What an upgrade.
While I'm moving, I turn the light around again to see all the different objects inside this place. They are mostly equipments of different kind. There's the life support on the other side of the bed. There're numerous cans on the floor, set neatly together. There are other beds as well, as well as large refrigerator-like containers-
Other beds?
I kill the rover's motion, make it turn around, and move it in the direction of the nearest bed. My chest starts thumping once again and cold sweat forms at the back of my neck.
As I start getting closer, I hear groans.
The light, it shines on the bed and I can see feet over it. Squirm. Move.
In the next ten seconds, I arrive at the foot of the bed.
I hear a gasp.
Slowly, I turn to the head of the bed. I see red hair sticking out.
"Sally... "
"Nnghh... Who... Jordan?"
"It's me!" My voice is weak but I say it with force.
Sally turns to the side and with the pressure of her palms, and the little strength she has in her, she sits herself upright. "Ugh, I feel so weak." Her strong and assertive voice has lost it's boldness. She notices me on the rover, and her face darkens. "What happened to you?"
"It seems I am incapacitated. So, I'm using this caretaking rover to move around. Trust me it's easy this way. Not to mention I've already tried this once before so I'm kinda experienced."
Sally stares at me for a moment, then snorts. She rubs her face. But when she retracts her hand, it is scrunched up. "Where are we...?"
"That's what I would like to find out. But more importantly, Sally... " I look upwards.
She stares at me, catches my cue a moment later and proceeds to do the same.
...
"It's night," Sally says. She brings her head back down, blinks, frowns, looks up again, and then- panics.
She gasps, covering her mouth with her palm. "How long was I out for?!" Shortly after, she winces. She lifts the neck of her garment to peek inside. And now, she gets even more horrified.
"It's the same for me. Looks like we were somehow rescued by the aliens and treated."
"So the mission failed, again. I couldn't save Billy, again." She cluches onto the neck of her garment with force. She hangs her head down, and holds it in her arms. Her hair dangles all over and reaches to her thighs. She sniffs. "They got so damn long."
"In contrary, I think this look suits you better."
This time she laughs. "Yeah, well, you look like someone who's completely wasted his life."
I snort. "Well, I've sure wasted a lot of months if I'm getting it all right. As have you."
Her expression gradually turns pained. She covers her face with her hands and stays still. But after a while, I see her head shake, her posture become weaker. So, I choose to give her some alone time. "I'd go see if the others have woken up yet." I steer the rover away further.
If we two woke up at nearly the same time, I think the others will wake up soon as well. Maybe they already have.
I stop the rover. Maybe, I don't need to talk to them all, right now. I should probably find out what went down after the ambush. There's bound to be some aliens around.
And so, I reach for the door again. The light from the rover's arms shines on the opposite wall to illuminate a huge sliding door made of a bluish-grey metal. The alloy these aliens use everywhere.
When I get to it, it doesn't open automatically.
I click my tongue in annoyance. "Now I'd have to figure out how to even get out?"
But to my surprise, a few seconds later, it opens on its own.
"So you've woken up, blessed one," I hear an uncanny little girl's voice, and then, the tall form of an alien with an ant head and long antennae comes into my view. "Oh, you're already trying to break free are you? The rover seems distressed."
I look at the alien with my neck bent upwards to intercept it's gaze, "Well, I can gurantee that I am far more distressed than it is right now." A pricking sensation nudges me on the inside. "And Sally, is so broken... You don't need to hear it from me to believe."
"Why, that is to be expected. It seems you need some answers right now. Terribly so. Aha!" She turns around and walks back the way she came from, wagging her tail, her upper two limbs moving in strange gestures. "I was coming once the support machine indicated your awakening, but my oh my, the rover sending a beacon was unexpected. You really are special, huh?"
She didn't even wait for me to follow her!
Exiting the dome area, I drive through a long hallway. It stirs up an unsettling memory within me. Thankfully, there are lights placed near the top that provide steady and regular bright bluish illumination, unlike the memory.
I look downwards, following her tail, my eyes narrowing as my eyebrows pucker up when I process the last line she said. I really do hope that I am special. I really do. Because I have to be special. To fight against all this. And to reunite with her. Because I know that she is fighting. And so I have to be strong as well. I must!
But why did the alien let me tag along alone? Wouldn't it be better to explain everything to everyone once everybody gets up?
"I woke up first, didn't I?" without getting to the very point, I ask that.
"In fact you did not."
"Huh. So who else did, besides me and Sally?"
"Rocky was the first. Then Amanda and Diana as well."
My expression changes to that of pleasant surprise. "Is that so. Then where are they?"
"Rocky was back where you woke up. The other two are in a different medical station."
I hum. "So was it only me, who did this foolish move of hijacking a rover?"
"In fact you did! How characteristic of you. I have heard a lot of things about you from my superiors."
I nod. I'm sure they sure as hell aren't things that would make one's chest fill up with pride for a fact. I mess up far too often.
"So where are we going?"
She doesn't answer back. But then, with a sinister laugh she responds, "I'm sure you'd like to get some fresh air, right Jordan?"
I gulp. The way she said that...it's unsettling.
"Yeah, I think that'd make me feel better."
And so, the rest of the way, we don't talk further. The rover as if having given up all hope, continues to be my wheelchair (kind of) and we eventually reach another door. It opens automatically and we walk into another huge space with a dome. This time when I look up, I see some specks of white float above the dome. Snow...?
This place, contrary to the previous one is lit up. It's a subdued yellow that illuminates the whole area and I see that there are benches here, alongwith tables. Is this a dining hall?
"When everybody wakes up, they'll all be brought here. You may chat here to your heart's content until one of my superiors comes down." With that said and with a sheepish smile, the alien turns around. "And now, let's take a walk outside. Just to give you a lay of the land."
My concern picks up. I don't know what she means by that.
The door opens and I slowly drive to the outside. The wheels counter a bit of resistance... My breath fogs before my eyes. My own cloud. In the night's frigid air, all I see is- white. Pure white.
I pull my garment close to prevent any body heat from escaping away. But it hardly helps. My teeth start chattering. My tongue grows dry and the rover grows abnormally cold.
"Aahh!" With a cold burn on my fingertips I fall on the snowy ground. I curl myself up, shivering in the ungodly cold. I look behind me to see a black hill covered in snow, on whose base the artificial structure projects out from.
I turn in front, and there's a canyon in front of me a few hundred metres away. The wind picks up and it gets even more chilly. The dark night and black mountains caked with snow, these one's towering in my front, make me feel at their mercy. My teeth chatter away in the cold. This isn't how I saw the planet from above! It wasn't snow-capped anywhere, as far as I can remember. Even from the 3D model.
"Welcome to Grevia! The Ice World. This should serve as your next base of operations," the alien says with enthusiasm.
...
Wait.
Wait, wait, wait.
I'm on another planet?!
...
"YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!"
