Chapter 11
I'm in a state of denial. What happened earlier was so out of the world (literally), that I still can't fathom what I saw there. It's most likely why I don't remember the two times I dreamt of that place. Only entering that realm can I unlock those dreams that were so bizarre. But since I am conscious now, what happened really happened. I am certain of that. Those weren't dreams I had before. They were visions.
Somehow my consciousness travelled far beyond the cosmic barrier. Ugh, this hurts my brain.
Looking on ahead, at least the scenery is calming. Walking is tough, though. Maybe because I am not used to feeling like this, I didn't notice it right away. But if I'm not wrong, the gravity is slightly higher than back on Earth. It's really a minute difference so it's not immediately noticeable.
Maybe you should consider putting on some bulk then.
Not a bad idea. But it begs to see if they have gyms over here. I think they'd have some. That would be an useful enhancement session to have.
I arrive at the facility. It's a plain metallic building, a bit slanted, something resembling glass all throughout it's exterior. It even has vents.
As I approach the sliding doors, it should open right away. But it doesn't.
Am I not allowed in?
I look at my black hand, squelching with foreign life.
I aim it at the door, hoping to blast it or something- but, nothing so serious is required.
The door opens.
Huh? Interesting. It didn't allow me but it allows space buddy here?
Looks like I'm the VIP! He he he.
"Yeah whatever. Suit yourself."
It's strange but I feel like the place stirred. That's unsettling. Upon entering, the place is dark. It's late in the afternoon now (has been since I came here for that matter), but there's enough light outside. Then why is this place so dark? There was even glass-like-
"No way, they are mirrors?"
I survey the glass bricks from the inside. They let little light get in. Most is reflected out. They are one way mirrors.
I raise my eyebrows and curl my lips. Impressive. Not the mirror part, but the fact that I could figure it all out with my big brain. I smile ear to ear and carry on deeper inside.
But it's too dark. I need some light source.
Can't you give me infra-red vision or something?
Nope. Can't give you something your body doesn't have. That's out of my league.
Makes sense. I'd need something else to substitute for that then.
Let's see what can I use. They don't have flashlights do they.
Something falls. I hear a crash.
I jump and scream. "What was that!"
Come on now. Don't scare me like that!
What, I didn't do anything!
Not you, idiot.
There's something in here. Besides the both of us. I cautiously look around. It's dead quiet again.
Maybe you should just run.
...
You know what? I know just the thing.
A new mission is on.
____________
Well whoever thought of this first was a genius. And since I know nobody who did this before me, I am the genius! Wohoo! Kudos to me! I boost my self confidence up as I proceed outside the door.
This counts as abuse and you know it too, I hear someone say, and he is not so happy.
Oh come on. This would only take a jiffy. Don't worry.
I'm not worrying. I'm just-
Aaaaghhh, just do as I say will you! I'm hungry and I don't wanna get eaten before I have dinner. Lord knows what moves in there...
Such a funny thought.
You will be a funny thought if you keep on messing around with me.
Yeah whatever. But I must say this is wrong. Don't go on for too long alright.
I doubt it'd take more than a few moments. Because I'm already starving as is.
I don't feel too good about this.
Should I repeat myself again?
Okay, okay.
The side of my palm oozes and space buddy poops out in front of the door. I watch the black mass fall off, and go back to the cloth stage I first picked it up in that abandoned barn of a place I woke up in.
And just as I had envisioned, the door opens and stays open. Aha! Now the door is open for as long as I don't collect the poop back up. Mission accomplished! The Lost Eternal has successfully found a way to get proper lighting into the hidden dark facility.
Yaaaay... Woohoo...
Don't be a party pooper now.
I hear him huff and grunt.
And now, I move inside. The light flooding in sheds the dark skin off of the hidden facility. It's all clearer now.
...
My mouth falls on it's own. My legs don't move. My eyes twitch and my teeth chatter.
This is not something I was ready to see.
This shit is messed up.
I gulp.
All around, I see chambers and fancy equipments. The alien kind. And there are animate objects. Things that shouldn't exist. Lying dead. Piled.
Maybe I wasn't meant to be here after all.
But it's too late, isn't it.
...
You know me too well. Sometimes it frightens me.
Well, first objective from Space buddy here: Locate the unknown disturbance.
Lost Eternal here, copy that.
My black hand raised in defence I move inside deeper, stealthily, turning and making poses to shoot whatever moves.
You can play supervillain when you have some audience, just get the work done quick for now.
But this is so cool! I feel like a special operative.
You are a doofus.
...
Okay I'll behave.
Works like a charm. Every time.
Upon closer inspection the chambers look like incubators. Some have green liquid in them, bubbles floating up, but the machines are dead. The ones that don't have the liquid have no light on or anything to prove they are in working condition. Hmm, how very unsettling. Did they abandon this site? Why did they leave it be then? But I don't think they would abandon it just like that. There's no lock or anything on the door. And nothing is rotten. Whatever happened here, happened not too long ago.
There's a lot of stuff lying around, so it's difficult to move. Containers, equipments all black and blue (in colour), some shells, maybe? I don't know what to make heads or tails out of half the stuff stored in here.
I try not to look at all the dead remains piled up. They are not rotten or anything; it seems this site was recently abandoned. There's hardly any smell of decay. But from what little I take notice of, from trying not looking at them as much as I can, is that they have marks on them.
They did not die. They were killed. And it doesn't take much thinking to figure out who's responsible for that.
I'm in a dangerous predicament right now. Walking on thin ice.
Passing the arc of light falling on the opposite wall, I walk into the shadows. I pick up shiny metal slabs and place them such that the light reflects off them to illuminate the sole room more. It doesn't help too much but I do it anyway.
Whatever moved is not moving again.
Shouldn't you have guarded the exit first?
Well, that wouldn't have helped. I need the light.
Then what if it escaped already.
Now...that's a scary thought. Loosing a genetically engineered mutant (from what I can analyse from the site, it's most likely that or research test subjects) into the open brings all kinds of trouble.
Now I see how you pulled signalling It off perfectly without issue. And I thought for once you were improving.
Hey we don't know for sure it escaped! I would have heard something-
Rustle.
There!
I catch a glimpse of a silhouette.
It shot out of the door!
Catch it! Catch it!
I run for the door, bring my hand to the floor and retrieve the lost bit of space buddy. I hear him sigh in relief as if he got back lost jewelry. Some jewels they were.
Hey!
I raise my hands in surrender, as I keep chasing the cursed thing through the greenery. The thing, whatever it is, is coloured an uncanny purple. With white specks on it. That combination seems deadly I wonder why. Venomous? That's my gut reaction.
It has six legs, like those aliens, but it's furry. And it has three tails. But, the tails look funny. What's those ball-like things on their ends?
"Ugh, it's difficult running on empty stomach! My head would start spinning in no time. Can I do that again?" I plead.
Do what?
The thing changes direction like a deer. But I don't let it get too far off and keep on it's tail like a determined tiger. Well, some tiger I am.
Do what, brother?
Get a clue. I'm talking about signalling.
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
"Ahh!"
Immediately my ears start ringing, even though the voice is inside my head.
I stumble. My head suddenly hurts. "Why did you scream like that?" The thing is moving further off. Dammit. I try quickening my speed but it's difficult.
Everytime you signal, my body grows weaker. And when it grows weaker, I require food. We both are running low on that end. If you use up all my energy. I'd go back to being a cloth. I'd go back in hibernation. You won't be able to establish contact with me again.
Huh? What. Really? Why?
The soul marriage happens only once per user. Our fate was sealed the moment you picked me up. And I seized hibernating the moment the bonding started in the lab.
I catch glimpses of my hand reaching out to something in the first vision I had. I see drops of blood come out and mix and-
Suddenly I am terrified. And then the worst comes to fruition. My head starts spinning and before I know, I'm lying down on the ground, breathing harder than I can ever remember.
And the creature, running after it has shed the chains of it's captivity, swiftly goes out of my sight.
Huffing, trying to catch my breath, I am left with a single profound thought, one that'd probably haunt me in my sleep for days to come: I have unleashed something terrible on this already terrific world.
And there's no going back.
