Facing the Enemy
"Amarth you have to fight this!"
Legolas continued to struggle against his restraints.
"I cannot fight it."
Amarth held him still with one hand and held the knife in the other. Fear was the only emotion on his face.
"Forgive me..."
Amarth started to push the knife in.
Legolas felt the familiar pain return to him, only this time it was a hundred times worse.
He screamed and fought even harder to break free, Amarth hadn't reached his heart yet, but he would soon.
"Stop."
Alatar ordered.
Amarth pulled the knife out while Legolas gasped from pain.
Both wondered why Alatar had stopped it.
"Well Legolas, it appears that your "friends" have come to save you. Although they will fail."
Alatar walked over to Legolas and grinned.
"Perhaps I will let them in here, so they can see the beginning of Middle Earth's destruction."
Alatar drew a long sword and pointed it at Legolas' chest, which was slowly starting to bleed.
"Do you recognize this? It was the sword you carried when I found you."
Alatar held it up and inspected it.
"This was your brother's sword correct? It will serve me well in slaying your friends."
"You will not touch them!"
Legolas shouted in anger.
Alatar smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry Legolas. But they must die. Besides, I had already planned to kill Aragorn from the beginning."
Aragorn is here?
Legolas couldn't believe that he had come. Who else was with him?
Alatar turned to Amarth.
"Your job will have to wait. We must deal with our intruders first."
He turned back to Legolas and grinned.
"And after you watch your friends die, and after I free Morgoth, you will know what true darkness is."

Aragorn raced up the steps of Orthanc, it had been damaged during Sauron's rule and he had to watch his step.
Haldir was right behind him, both had their swords gripped tightly in their hands.
They entered a large room and the first thing they saw was Legolas, tied and gagged.
His eyes were wide in terror and his chest was bleeding.
They were about to run over to him when Haldir was suddenly attacked from behind.
He spun around and his sword collided with Amarth's twin swords.
Aragorn narrowed his eyes.
Of course Amarth would join Alatar!
But then he saw the elf's face, it was filled with fear.
He's not doing this on purpose.
Haldir was still struggling with Amarth.
Aragorn was about to help him when he heard Alatar's voice.
"Welcome, Aragorn. You're just in time."
Alatar stepped out of the shadows with a sword in his hand.
"I will enjoy watching you
suffer."
Alatar charged forward and Aragorn prepared himself for the attack.
The blow from Alatar knocked Aragorn backwards, he quickly regained his balance as Alatar struck again.
Alatar was strong, but Aragorn was fast.
Alatar couldn't hit him, but Aragorn couldn't either.
Haldir was still fighting Amarth, who was trying to fight off Alatar's control over him.
Legolas watched helplessly.
If only he could break free!
Then he heard something behind him.
Someone was cutting the ropes that held him.
He turned his head and tried to see who it was.
Finally, the ropes fell loosely onto the floor.
Legolas ripped the cloth out of his mouth and ran behind the pillar.
"Merry? And Sam! What are you doing here?"
He exclaimed as he looked down at the two hobbits.
"We came to save you!"
Merry grabbed his hand.
"We have to go, Gimli's waiting outside!"
"What about them?"
Legolas wouldn't leave Aragorn or Haldir.
"They'll follow after you're safe."
Sam tried to hide the fear in his voice.
Alatar suddenly realized that Legolas was free.
He swung his arm at Aragorn and sent him crumbling to the floor.
Haldir tried to get to him but couldn't escape Amarth.
Alatar stalked over to Legolas, who immediately put himself in front of the hobbits.
Alatar noticed their fear and smiled.
"Don't worry, I promise to make your deaths quick and painless."
He smirked at Merry.
"Unlike your poor cousin. He suffered greatly before he died."
Merry bristled in anger and grief at the mention of Pippin's death.
Legolas glared at Alatar.
"If you touch them I will kill
you."
Alatar laughed.
"Stupid elf! You cannot kill me, and you cannot save them your friends either."
Alatar grabbed Legolas and threw him aside.
The elf landed hard on the stone floor.
Sam and Merry watched in horror as Alatar stood over them.
Suddenly he screamed in agony.
"Like Legolas said," Gimli pulled his axe out of Alatar's back.
"If you touch them you'll die."
Alatar glared at the dwarf.
He forgot about the hobbits and attacked Gimli.
Sam and Merry watched in horror.
Legolas was rising to his feet, Aragorn was trying to get up, and Haldir could do nothing while Amarth attacked him.
Legolas ran over and pushed the hobbits away from the fight.
"Get away from here!"
Legolas shouted desperately.
He would not let them get hurt.
Legolas didn't know what he would do without a weapon but he couldn't stand by and do nothing.
"Legolas!"
Merry and Sam threw their swords over to Legolas.
The elf retrieved them and joined the fight.
The small swords would work just fine as knives.
Alatar couldn't fend off blows from Legolas and Gimli at the sane time.
He couldn't be killed by them, but he could be weakened.
Alatar's frustration grew as he tried to land a blow on either of them.
He couldn't kill Legolas, but he couldn't hold out much longer against him.
Alatar had no choice.
He threw his sword down and spread his arms out.
He shouted something in a language that none of them understood, and suddenly the walls around them collapsed, the roof was blown to pieces, exposing them to a storm that had been raging outside.
Then Alatar seized one of Legolas' arms twisted it painfully before slamming his fist down, breaking the arm.
Legolas screamed in agony and dropped his weapons.
Alatar recovered the sword, rain poured down on them from the clouds, Legolas heard the sound of a sword going into flesh.
"No!"
Legolas shouted in vain, he watched as Alatar threw the now bloody sword onto the floor.
Gimli tried to stop the blood that poured from the wound, but it was no use.
He fell onto his side, and Legolas watched another person he cared about die.
Alatar didn't give him time to grieve or even process what had happened.
He grabbed Legolas' broken arm and dragged him towards the black table.
Legolas struggled but it was vain.
Aragorn was still lying helplessly on the floor.
He felt the same weight he'd felt in Minas Tirith pinning him down.
Haldir was in the same state, Sam and Merry were frozen in fear.
It was the second time they had seen one of their friends die.
Alatar called for Amarth to come to the table, which had a strange ring around it.
Alatar pulled Legolas forward and held him still in front of the table.
"Now I will finish what I started!"
Alatar shouted.
Thunder cracked and lightning flashed overhead.
They were all drenched from the rain.
Legolas tried to break away from Alatar but it was useless.
"There is no escape now Legolas."
Alatar hissed.
Turning to Amarth he said,
"Give me the knife."
