Chapter 3: Building Trust
Jordan's P.O.V.
Robin contacted me. His shocked face made me overcome my initial suprise.
"Hang on!" I snapped it shut, and changed back to my human form. Had I shaken him badly? I re-opened it slowly. "Yeah?" His face was emotionless.
"Were you just a huge wolf?" One of his eyebrows was raised quizzically.
"Um, yeah. I was doing something, I'm usually in this form but yeah... What do you want, mate?" I said, striking up an Australian accent, one I've done many times before.
"Why does she want me? Us? What's the catch?" Robin asked, giving out yet another of famous interrogations, getting straight to the point.
"You guys are great! Obviously! The only catch? You have to listen to Ashley talking!" I said; truthfully, I was being honest. Ashley never stops talking. Talk about motormouth but that doesn't really bother me. Robin still looked unsatisfied, tilted his head as if weighing my words, and nodded.
"I'll take your word for it..." Starfire appeared behind him. "Robin, out." The screen went black. I leaned back and sighed with relief.
"What just happened?" Ashley asked.
"Robin. Can we check Base 1 now?" I asked my friend, who towered over my human self in Nabican form.
"Yeah. Hey, Alex, what did you think of Robin?"
"He's cool. I like his cape... I want a cape... Can we go get waffles now?" Alex begs, widening his eyes.
"Fine." Ashley and I chorused. They morphed to human forms, Ashley straightened the chairs around the conference table (she is so OCD about some things), and we teleported to Base 1.
Starfire's POV
Robin had looked perplexed, as if Beast Boy had created a 'prank' and threw a balloon of oil again. I put my hand on his shoulder and he smiled at me. "Robin, out," he had said, and we walked to his room, which was labeled, "Boy Wonder." Perhaps it was a joke? Robin opened the door and threw our luggage into a closet.
"So, do you want to grab lunch at the pizza place downtown and catch a movie with the others?" I stared at him a moment, translating what he had said. After a moment, I understand. 'Catch' a movie means to attend a 'film' projected onto a large white sheet while Robin holds my hand.
"I would enjoy it immensely. You do not have to ask. May we leave now? You are certain you are not busy?" I smiled and leaned against him.
"I'm sure," Robin said. He put his arm around my waist and I rested my head on his shoulder. We went down to the cave of bats where Robin stored his R-cycle, as Robin insists I call it. He released me and threw his leg over the seat. "Do you want to ride with me or not?" I giggled and made lip contact with him before he pulled his helmet on completely. I grabbed my own helmet, which was purple, and sat behind him. I put it on and hugged his waist.
"I am ready, Robin." I enjoy the exhileration of riding with Robin, but I prefer flight. I am glad Robin can drive quickly and safely. I believe it makes it more enjoyable for us both.
"What kind of pizza do you want?" Robin asked when we arrived. We had saved a table for the others, since we were first.
"Mmm... I do not know. You may choose." I replied. He sighed and looked at the menu. I looked up and gasped. Robin turned around.
"You." He said.
Ashley's POV
Okay. Not quite what I expected. I had thought of two reactions, and this one was neutral. We had been walking to a waffle place and spotted them, so we'd just come over to talk with them.
"Yeah, me. What's up?" I said. Alex walked up behind me with a cheese pizza. Jordan was telling off a waiter for dropping a napkin. Her voice rang over the silence.
"You idiot! That is a high insult! I declare you go to Tawaiian court for dropping the white flag and attempting to raise an attack against a Councilor Ambassador of Tawaii. I am kin to the powerful Empress! Shame on you, sah! Fie! Fie!" The waiter ran inside, white as a sheet. Jordan still looked angry. "What are you looking at, peasants?" The people staring at her quickly turned back to their food. Starfire fidgeted uneasily.
"What do you want? You said a week." Robin said accusingly.
"I know, but I always check on my peeps (people)!" I said, beaming. "I was just going to hang out with you guys, if that's okay..." I looked at him expectantly.
"Oh, Robin! Let us do the 'hanging out'!" Star looked at him pleadingly with her big green eyes.
"Fine." Robin said grudgingly.
"Yay!" Star squealed and launched herself at him.
"Oof!" Star knocked the wind from him in a bone-crushing hug. I covered my mouth so no one would notice my smile. Alex and Jordan were shaking with silent laughter. Some unknowing waitress asked Jordan if she was going to eat here. Jordan glared at her and opened her mouth to delver a scathing "Duh! Why would I be here in the first place? What twit hired you?" I mentally stopped her and talked to the waitress while telepathically getting on to Jordan.
"Of course. I'm sorry." <Jordan, you shouldn't be biting people's heads off!> "Here, we'll sit down." <Get a seat and sit down! Don't say a word!> The waitress walked away, scooting carefully around Jordan, who refused to sit down until the waitress left. Jordan pulled a chair up next to Alex and plopped down in it. She sat silently a minute, as if contemplating what she should say, and proceeded to tell me off as I sat down.
"That waitress should have known better! She needed somebody to enlighten her! She is a total waste! And don't tell me what to do! I know what I'm doing, and you're too nice to the puny humans! And-"
"I know." I interrupted.
"You say you do, but obviously you don't. Waitress! Can I have a menu? Thanks." Jordan became absorbed in the menu. She was a fiesty person, the one you wanted on your side and the kind you would run from if she was the enemy. She does a lot with the warriors and hunters. And believe me, whoever is under her will shape up immediately, or... well, you know what'll happen. I have never seen her team make a single mistake, and they are so quiet and obedient. Welka, a Nezbanian Nabiwolf female, always grins wolfishly at the horrified faces of the ones chosen for Jordan's team, and the relieved faces of the others. Welka is the Nabiwolf Warrior Commander (NWC), and she is very fond of Jordan and the way she licks them into shape. Jordan and Welka use zoomic (Tawaiian word meaning "ancient") methods of training. It works, so I'm not complaining.
"What would you like?" I jumped slightly.
"Oh, we already got our pizza, but I would like a Pepsi, please." Jordan said politely.
"Same," said Alex. "And one of these chocolate pies."
"Coke, please." I said. The waitress left. I smiled at Robin and toyed with my communicator. It rang. I jumped up and opened it. "Yeah?" It was Mary Hood, daughter of Robin Hood and Marian, twin to Rob, and married to Justin (they're all foxes, BTW), and co-commander of MA's forces. She controls the jet forces, strike forces, cavalry (pegasi riders included, and everyone has their own unique pegasus), and so on and so forth. She's also a teacher at the MA school.
"I vas just checking on you. How is it going? I don't really have much to do vight now, since my class is taking a test. I decided now vas as good a time as ever to check on you." Mary said in her rich French/English accent. (Seriously, she has both accents.) "But, do you vant me to initiate jet launch for ze jet practice later before I give ze Pegasi riding lessons?"
"Uh, fine, and sure." I said, sinking back into my seat. Mary usually didn't say more than she had to. "What's going on?"
"Nozink. Am I vorrying you?" She said, grinning wolfishly.
"No..." I trailed off. Mary turned serious.
"Vat do you you vant me to do with her?" Mary asked. She showed me Ballrine, a broken vase, and an unconsious Burnette. I sighed.
"Seriously? I'll ask Robin what he would do."
"Robin? Vat?" Mary looked confused. Ballrine looked mortified.
"What would you do, Robin?" I turned to Robin.
Robin's POV
"What would you do Robin?" The question hung in the air. What? Did I look like a principal or something to her? I told her exactly what I thought.
"Do I look like a principal to you? It's not my job, it's yours." I looked at her crossly. I don't dish out punishments to students, unless they're HIVE students. The unconsious one looked like young Wonder Woman... "Who are they?"
"The unconsious one is Burnette, daughter of Clark and Diana. The other one is Ballrine, daughter of dance. She's a little... odd." Ashley nodded and sipped her Coke.
"Oh." I said. I looked around. My team had arrived. "Are you guys going to sit down?" Cyorg was talking to Bee on his communicator and waved my question/command off. BB and Raven sat down.
"Catrina couldn't come. She had to leave for a meeting or something at MA's Base 1, as is everybody else at Wayne Manor, except for Alfred. Can we have a party?" Beast Boy chattered.
"No!" Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, and I yelled.
"Dude. This is so boring."
"Well, to us, this is relaxing," Raven quipped. Beast Boy sulked. Raven pulled out a large White Magic book in Phoenician and read it. Cyborg turned back to his conversation with Bee. I sighed.
"So... Robin. How would you like a field trip to Base 2? Star can come, too. We have Base 4 in Gotham City, Base 5 in Tawaii, Base 6 in Amazon, Base 7 in Turlia, I can't be bothered to remember it..." She paused before continuing. "Base 8 on Andromeda Arms, and Base 9 near Clark's headquarters. We're planning to build Base 10 soon. We have loads of other bases, but we didn't build 10 for a reason. It's just blueprints right now. We can visit Base 3 on the way to see how the meeting works and we'll visit Base 1 with the rest of the team sometime. Sound good?" Ashley said.
"Sure. Why not?" I said. "Whoa!" I yelled. I was thrown flat as the world spun around me.
