The Sins of The Father

<An Author's Note> Anything in the story relating to subjects not clarified in the game or the wiki of the game itself are part of my own head-canon, or derived from the ideas of other fans of the game. I know everyone has their own theories and ideas and I respect them all, but for the sake of this story they are not up for debate.

Also, mind any grammar or spelling issues. My spellcheck and brain are both malfunctioning.

ENTRY ONE, APRIL 17TH, 18XX

The day I met Chaibeka, was also my first encounter with a monster.

Granted, we were only children, and had no idea of what the difference was between a human and a monster, other than her affinity with magic and my overall endurance and strength. Often times, I would offer to carry her across whatever fields we would travel together before going home. It took her a few weeks to accept those offers, but I never would forget how she would smile- just slightly- before turning her nose away.

"Just because you're human, doesn't mean you're that much stronger!" She would huff before marching ahead. I admired her spirit, for lack of common sense. For a monster so much weaker than me, her inner strength almost matched the outward of my own.

As a boss monster, Becky was already much stronger than a monster of a normal caliber. Her SOUL was capable of taking more damage in direct combat, and she herself was able to live far longer than most monsters as well, let alone her lifespan compared to that of even the healthiest humans.

I think of that now as I'm waiting eagerly in the new hospital of our little town. I'm praying for God or whoever willies about up there to give her all of my human strength. Please, oh please, give her my strength.

It was an idea of my own, to begin this strange experiment. What is the difference between a human soul and a monster's soul? Is it the physicality? Or perhaps it was the personality of the being themselves that determined what became the SOUL of life.

Regardless, there was only one way to find out, and to solve the mystery of how two beings of completely different physicality could reproduce. My hypothesis is as follows:

If a certain meta-physicality is changed, then a human and monster may produce a healthy offspring.

This is what we both wanted, for our own and for similar reasons.

To start a family.

To create history.

To bestow on our generation the link to humans and monsters.

I'm writing in this journal, now, as she had wished me to weeks ago on my birthday. The leather still smells like new, and the binding is stiff. "It's a journal, or perhaps a diary." She said with a smile. "It's the journal of the greatest scientist I have ever known."

"You flatter me, my dear." I had replied, tracing my fingers across its soft cover. "This is such an extravagant gift. Are you sure it's alright?"

"Of course."

I regret not writing in it immediately. I'm writing in it on the day that may be the last day I had seen my wife. The last day I might ever look into her eyes. Did I tell her I loved her this morning? These thoughts cloud my mind as I wait in the hallway, hearing the squeaks of rolling carts and the babble of fellow doctors.

The first few attempts were obvious failures. I had created a serum of multiple vitamins to better protect her immune system before the first... experiment. After a month, it was obvious that it had done nothing, though her vitality and stamina were heightened greatly during intimacy.

The next trial was to combine a monster's compound with my own, to which she outright refused. No further experiments were held for the next three months.

Then, an old colleague came into town on happenstance, and I explained my goal to him. We both discussed future possible experiments, regarding the alteration of the physical compounds in both the human and the monster specimen, when he came upon a new, inspirational theory.

"Doctor," he tapped his chest as he spoke, "did you know that certain monsters can absorb the souls of humans, making them exponentially stronger?"

I was dumbfounded. In my years of research in the history of both human and monster existence, I had never been told of such knowledge, and I relayed that to him.

"Boss monsters are the only kind that can accomplish such a task, yet it completely changes their physicality. They become an entirely different form of creature, and their SOUL reflects that which they have absorbed."

"Then," I pondered, "in theory, that physicality would be closer to human."

"Precisely."

"That an incredibly useful detail... How did you realize such a thing?"

"I worked for our King's group of magicians and scientists to study the link between humans and monsters. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't call upon you as well, my friend, considering your background and personal interests."

"I suppose I slipped through the cracks."

"It's for the better." He shrugged and folded his arms. "The funding has ceased for no known reason. I suspect for the military."

"Military?"

"Well, after it was discovered that this new creature is so much stronger than humans, it was only a few days until the guards stormed our facility and ceased all projects."

"I see."

We caught ourselves off of the subject with trivial conversation; he was no longer with his wife, after she had learned she couldn't bear children and left to live with her family further south in the country. His brother, a doctor like himself, was pursuing technological engineering in college after receiving his Doctorate. Since he lacked the abilities that his brother Aster had, sleeping spells and study potions wouldn't be aiding him in his pursuit of knowledge.

"It's for the better. Poor man should be more focused on his schoolwork than flirting with the girls in the shops."

"If you don't mind, Aster, getting back to that experiment?"

"Of course, my friend."

From there, he discussed in tremendous detail the experiment I would be using on my wife a short time after, with a few adjustments:

The equation is as follows:

The exact equation we have derived from research is

SOUL = phy(√det) + ∑[(mag - hp) exp]

Therefore, the level of physicality and what is called Determination in a soul has a major factor in his compatibility with the subject in which it is paired. The stronger and more willful a SOUL is, the more likely it is that the two SOULs will combine successfully. This is essential to changing the physical form of the being without damaging too much of the mind. With my wife as the main test subject, I wanted to make absolutely sure this would be the case.

Doctor Aster had made the serum with leftover supplies from his earlier research, and I prepared Chaibeka. She was nervous, but after I explained enough to her she sighed and smiled.

"I'm ready, darling. We've come so far for this family."

"I'm ready."

After nine long months, I wish I still was.

ENTRY TWO, APRIL 21st, 18XX

Success.

I never thought I would say it. The SOUL that we had initially detected in the womb had doubled in size, due to the levels of DETERMINATION. What had caused Chaibeka the large amount of pain was not only childbirth, but the splitting of the SOUL itself, giving us two offspring?

One of them we named after my grandfather, Daniel. He is human, but it would seem his SOUL has the chemical properties of a monster- meaning his body is composed mostly of magic, and is weaker than that of a normal boy.

The other, we named (y/n). Becky chose the name herself, and it suits her perfectly. She has similar fur and horns like her mother, but (y/n)'s magical properties are less so than that of a monster. She also seems to have a stronger physical presence than her brother, and often curls around him like a protective barrier. They are what I believe to be two halves on one whole.

Regardless, this is a scientific discovery far beyond what I anticipated.

We have joined humans and monster through this.

ENTRY THREE, APRIL 30th, 18XX

The weather is mild enough today, after a series of rainstorms, to take Becky and the children home. As a monster child, (y/n) seems to be already growing at a faster rate than Daniel. This was to be expected.

Becky has had a more than positive outlook despite the glances we are given by the staff here. She is already reading the papers for possible schools to bring them to, though I have to remind her of Daniel's delicate nature, and how he'll be susceptible to roughhousing by other school boys. Little (y/n), meanwhile, is excitedly babbling about the outside, and is learning to ask questions.

"Where's Danny fur? Um, daddy fur?"

"What light up there? 'Sun'?"

"Green! Green!"

Using the books they had on them for the children's wing, Becky has been teaching her colors and numbers, as well as common manners. It will take a while for Danny to reach her level of intelligence, but he seems to also progress much faster than a human-only infant. Perhaps they will be helping me in my study soon.

ENTRY FOUR, MAY 5, 18XX

It's been one year since I wrote in this journal. The word 'chaos' is most appropriate to describe the past few months of living in our home.

Chaibeka had me finish the nursery the moment we arrived home, and I've only just finished painting and making (once again) a bed that would fit (y/n). The late afternoon sun is beginning its descent toward the horizon, and (y/n) is helping - or at least it's an attempt to help - her mother in the kitchen. I can hear them both singing songs to pass the time from my study.

I'm taking this time to consider the breakthrough we have made. These two children would be called abominations not decades ago. Now? Perhaps the world has grown scientifically enough to accept such a discovery. That leaves the true question:

Do we show the world what we have done?

Aster was overjoyed to hear of (y/n) and Daniel's birth, saying it is the phenomenon of our generation, and of tomorrow's generation. He urges that I keep note of their growth and behavioral changes, and to keep him informed of whatever happens. I asked him this same question, and he said the answer was obvious.

"It is your duty as a scientist and as a doctor to reveal such discoveries to the world." He said.

Though, what is my duty as a father?

In order to succeed, we had used confidential information that the government seems to what to keep hidden away. And why not? Such knowledge of monsters and SOULs would bring chaos and fear. Fear would turn to hate. Hate would turn to war.

My god, a war on monsters would be a massacre. Becky, and (y/n), and perhaps even Daniel, would be targets of evil intentions.

I don't know if my doctoral obligations matter more than my fatherhood.

ENTRY FIVE, MAY 17, 18XX

Daniel is ill.

It would seem the magic that forms his body cannot withstand his human form. Though we've tried everything from vitamins to extensive surgeries to make his heart and other vital organs stronger, there's no stopping the slow deterioration of his body. His hands shake when he reaches up for his mother. When he cries too hard his throat tears from the exertion, and layers of silk and high-count cotton are necessary for holding him during feeding or washing (or, for Becky, simply using her telekinesis). Baths consist of simply soaking him in warm water, and (y/n) struggles to understand why she cannot play with her younger brother anymore.

"He's too weak to play, darling." Becky says to her with glistening eyes. "You'll have to wait until he gets better." Though her words are not convincing, and often stuttered from stifled cries.

Becky and I often forget that (y/n) and Daniel are twins, and I believe she senses that there is no road to recovery for Daniel.

I haven't told them about the coffin I had reserved, nor the news I have received from Aster.

Information was leaked to the papers regarding SOULs and monsters, and humans are demanding answers. It seems many monsters weren't even aware of their ability to absorb human SOULs, and many are leaving towns to live among each other rather than coexisting with humans. Though, their avoiding contact with the fearful race only leads to more anger. If this gets any worse, the war I had theorized will come to fruition.

I wonder, is this the price I pay for playing God? I have created the inconceivable, through unnatural trials and experiments. I lose my son, and the world loses peace, in exchange for science beyond what is considered ethical? Should I have asked how Aster had synthesized the materials that a SOUL consists of?

Were they synthesized? Or simply extracted? Would it have changed my answer?

I don't know what to do. I am losing faith in my choices, and in my humanity.

ENTRY SIX, JUNE 24th, 18XX

I am caught between seeking out Aster for help with Daniel's condition, or perhaps seeking doctors in the western cities, where medicine has more greatly modernized. Aster has been helpful thus far in such ways that were thought to be impossible before the trials to bring Chaibeka and myself children, but how far would we have to dive into the chasm of scientific exploration before finding an answer?

Becky isn't doing well, looking after Daniel as he slowly grows closer to death. Neither is dear (y/n), who sleeps by his bed every night, tiring her voice from singing him to sleep when her mother cannot.

The family I worked so hard to build is now falling apart after little over one year.

What am I going to do? Who do I turn to?

Could Aster provide the help that I need? I am growing desperate.

ENTRY SEVEN, AUGUST 12th, 18XX

I am sitting with my dear wife and daughter while my son sleeps soundly on a pile of blankets and coats, in one of the only places that are safe from dripping waters or crumbling stalactites of this place we now call home.

The war had ravaged the world above, and what is left of monsters around the world reside in these caves, deep down in the furthest corners of darkness.

I had only moments to act, before our family would be torn apart by the people we once shared dinners with. I disguised myself and Daniel as monsters, and we all fled with the others to Mount Ebbot. We walked alongside monsters of every shape and size, including who I recognized quickly as Toriel and Asgore Dreemurr, King and Queen of the monsters. We and all of the monsters reached a place of darkness halfway down (or what I imagine would be halfway) and while only the crystals on the cavern ceiling gave light to their destination, I motioned for us to separate from the group. Eventually, we found a large opening of glowing flowers and bright waters cascading down into depths unknown. Behind one waterfall is a small cavern where we now reside.

"Father, look!"

'Father, look!' Two identical voices called for me and I turned to see my daughter giggling with a blue flower.

"Please, (y/n). This way."

She seemed a little disheartened that I wasn't as excited about the strange flowers, but now is simply not the time for games.

As it stands, she and Chaibeka are the only two that can wander and search for food. Meanwhile, I am tending after Daniel, who has started to break out in fevers as his skin deteriorates to the touch. We can barely move him from where he lays.

I have to keep trying. I have to save him. I have to save my family.

ENTRY ELEVEN, DATE UNKNOWN

Some of the pages I had written on appear to be heavily damaged by the occasional water leak in the caverns. I'll have to be more careful in where I place it next time. My recollection of the date is foggy, though I dare say a year has gone by, at least.

Monsters are beginning to make their way back to the entrance of the caverns, led by the King and Queen, so for a large amount of time I kept the family hidden away until the numbers within this place- a place the King had named 'Waterfall'- had dwindled.

(Y/n) enjoys running off to play in the waters, and because of her appearance it does not cause too much suspicion, so long as her mother is with her. I've seen her playing with a flame-type monster, and Becky says he is very soft-spoken, yet polite. She still has to tell (y/n) to be gentle, however, as her strength far outmatches any grown monster, let alone such a small one.

Despite what seems like a hopeless fate for those trapped below the earth, the world that has survived underneath is surprisingly peaceful. I had traveled a few times myself to study the flora and came across the blue flowers (y/n) had mentioned before.

"Peculiar." I murmured out loud.

'Peculiar.' In my own voice, the flower imitated me over and over until it was just a faint whisper drowned out by the bubbling creek nearby. I picked a few of them and stowed them away with other samples I had collected. Perhaps the imitating essence of this flower could be used to replicate stronger cells in Daniel's body, therefore reviving him. Unfortunately, with no equipment, I had no way of extracting such parts from the plant.

... At least, that is what I had concluded then.

Becky came to me a few days prior, saying she encountered a scientist that knew her name, as well as mine. After she had described him, I knew I would have to see it to believe it.

Dressed in the guise I had come to the caverns in, I followed her instructions and wandered the halls of the glistening Waterfall until I reached a door. Opening it, I saw that it led to another hall unlike the caverns I was used to exploring. As I crept further and further in, I saw that there was one other door that had opened, revealing a tall figure with dark eyes and a skeletal body.

"My god." I breathed. "Aster. Is that you?"

The figure smiled and calmly nodded, and I used his moment of silence to look over his strange, altered form. His skin was gone, and I assumed- since there was no sound of a heart beating- that his vital organs had also disappeared. He had grown at least half of a meter since I last saw him.

"Forgive me for not meeting with you sooner, old friend." Even his voice had greatly deepened, and I was taken aback by the booming volume. "I had no way of knowing you or your family had survived. I am grateful you did."

"To what end, I wonder, considering Daniel's condition has worsened and the resources available to myself are limited." I couldn't help but mumble of my own misfortune. "Enough of that, however. Look at you! What has happened to you, Doctor?"

"It would seem an experiment of mine has gone a little... Awry." The doctor signed and looked at his own body. "Before the war had started, my brother claimed he had discovered a way to implement magic into a human SOUL. Due to the lack of funding in the science department, I offered to be a sort of lab rat to his new experiment."

"My God! Aster, you could have died!"

"That's not all." He said, then cleared his throat. "The magic he had extracted was from the SOUL of a powerful monster, and the magic adhering to my own SOUL altered my body to the form you see now. Not only that... "

The next thing that left his lips were a series of words that I could not comprehend, then he explained that it was the language that his monster counterpart had once used to communicate.

"Also, my name has changed as a result as well. I go by Wingdin Gaster, to better - ah, shall we say blend the added presence that I have accommodated - and to gain a better control of my magic."

"So, then I address you as Doctor Gaster?"

"If you'd like, dear friend."

I inquired much about his new state of being, and of his new magical abilities, and they far surpassed anything I would have dreamed of in my own experiments. To go this far with the science of SOULs, it was clear that Doctor 'Gaster' was more than dedicated to the task.

I decided that, when the crystals above cycle through their next light, I would bring him to study Daniel, and perhaps cure him of his comatose.

ENTRY 12

Gaster has finished studying the boy's vital signs and returned with some notes of his own, emphasizing the amount of magical energy and Determination in the SOUL that far surpasses the physical matter that is his body.

"In order to regain his strength, there is a part of the formula which we initially used to create both Daniel and (y/n) that is missing a vital part of SOULs in their physical form and their result on the body of their host."

He gave me the new formula, which is as follows:

SOUL = phy(√det) + ∑[(mag - hp) exp] LV

This element, which is amusingly called 'LOVE', was missing from my first experiment, and is a source of strength for both humans and monsters. The ability to stay resilient in times of strife, in times of physical combat, and to overcome the enemy at hand, is directly linked to this element of a SOUL. Monsters believe it counters an individual's ability to feel empathy, however this has not been completely founded information. The strength of LOVE is exponentially stronger within a human than a monster, as it is easily acquired and duplicated in their SOUL, since their capacity for such strength is greater as well.

"If we enhance the LOVE he already has, and give it more of a dominant place within his SOUL, there is a good chance it could leak into his physical form, and give him the strength to hold the SOUL in his body without complications."

"If it fails?" I asked warily.

He shook his head. "In the chance that it does fail, his SOUL will be too much for his body to handle, and it will try to exist outside of his body indefinitely."

"So he will die sooner than expected."

"Not if we hold his SOUL in something that can withstand his magic and balance the other elements in it. I will prepare such a container, to err on the side of caution."

"What should I do with Daniel? This is no place to perform surgeries on something so delicate."

I heard (y/n) call out for me and I turned to see her peeking in from her small space in the cave. Gaster breathed and turned around to look at her, smiling incredulously.

"My word." He gasped, arms reaching out to her. "Look at how much you've grown, dear child. You're looking very healthy, as well."

"Thank you, sir." She had crouched further into the shadows, obviously not recognizing the doctor she had barely known on the surface.

Gaster turned to me with the same smile. "If you don't mind, perhaps we can take Daniel as well as young (y/n) here to my laboratory? It's not far, and I'm sure she would like to help in the healing of her twin."

"I'm not sure." I looked to her. "Would you like to help Daniel get better? It will take a lot of hard work and concentration-"

(Y/n) was already loudly proclaiming her undying service to myself and the Doctor before running into her room to gather some things, including a few old toys and a coat. She seems very determined, if a little naive to the consequences of our failure.

Gaster's laboratory gave away quickly that he was a scientist of some renown among the monsters, and later told me he had even earned a royal title during his stay. Apparently, after explaining his form to the King of Monsters, Asgore had been intrigued by Gaster's adventurous love of science and its practice.

"As of right now, he has me working on ways to give monsters SOULs with enough strength to break the barrier, or cross without harm."

"Barrier?" I echoed, and he nodded.

What was left of the human magi living above had sealed away the underground with a barrier that cannot be broken by a monster SOUL alone. Rather, only the combined power of a human and monster SOUL could cross it, and only the power of seven human SOULs could break it.

"If I can take fallen monsters, and alter their SOULs to create human-like strength and power, we can all be free of this place."

What would become of the humans above, I wonder. No doubt, the monsters would have to fight their way to freedom, and even kill enough humans to end an inevitable war upon breaking the barrier. Monsters would have to kill, and absorb, the SOULs of humans to obtain enough power to defeat them.

What would become of my family, then? Perhaps my aid in Gaster's plan would give us safety at last. Safety for myself, and Daniel, as humans among monsters.

Though, considering his state of being and my own desire for scientific milestones, to the extent of altering SOULs for the integration of humans and monsters biologically, I believe our value exceeds our humanity.

Still, as Gaster had said, 'to err on the side of caution', I have my own plan for leaving with the rest of the monsters.

Perhaps, with the right adjustments, the transfer of monster magic and monster-like qualities can be customized. In such a way that, for Daniel and myself, our bodies could be modified enough- and temporarily, perhaps- to resemble that of a common monster.

Though, depending on the fate of humans and monsters, 'temporary' may not be an option.

ENTRY 13

Failure.

The SOUL rejected not only the body of Daniel, but the LOVE that was amplified now swims almost in orbital shapes around it, never to be one with the culmination of being. Daniel, physically, has died.

At the beginning of the procedure, (y/n) prepared the necessary vials of morphine and LOVE extracts by Daniel's bedside, also making sure to keep the toys she had stowed away near his body for him to see 'when he wakes up'. She was so excited.

Gaster prepared the machine he had made, a large animal-like structure that contained obscene amounts of magical energy that I later discovered were created by his invention: The CORE. The CORE takes the thermal energy of the underground's Hotland- a lava-riddled location named by the King as creatively as 'Waterfall'- and alters it into magical electricity. Electricity, being mostly found in biology and natural elements such as lightning storms, apparently has the ability to power machines better than steam or manpower alone. This is something I can't even fathom as a human, and for a monster-human hybrid to discover something so magnificent... Humans have lost so much in the Great War. More than they will ever understand.

How many years will it take for them to discover something similar?

It took us months to prepare the final test, to use the machine on Daniel's SOUL and inject enough LOVE replicated from the SOUL itself to enhance its strength and hope it spreads to his physical form. We made sure of it: the slow manifestation of LOVE and triggering of his inner DETERMINATION was to ultimately alter his ability to survive strife. To outlast pain and overcome the magical destruction of himself.

Instead, his body began to crumble into chunks of dust and molten flesh, and out came a SOUL glowing a deep blue. The LOVE and magical energy began to accumulate around the remains of his body, and I could hear (y/n) shrieking and trying to press the SOUL back into it with her own magical energy.

"Back, (y/n)!" Gaster called out before grabbing her and pulling her away. "It's too dangerous!"

"Save him!" Her words were shrill and desperate, and I hear them ring throughout this cavern despite the silence and light bubbling of water. "Save him! Father, SAVE HIM!"

I tried.

I cannot tell if I am more distraught at the doom of my own son, or angry at the failure of what seemed like a flawless idea. We had all of the calculations. We tested it for months. What could have gone wrong?

Becky hasn't spoken much since I delivered the unfortunate news to her. She only cradles the toys which is all that is left in her arms, humming softly to it while tears streak her fur.

I can't believe this is all we have to offer this world. A SOUL, trapped and repelling hope forever in a capsule where it will float aimlessly for eternity.

God, what have I done?

Gaster is analyzing the SOUL for any stark changes in its physicality. I let him have it. I want nothing to do with it.

ENTRY 14

It has been a few weeks since the trial had failed, and Gaster has been shut away in his Laboratory for the entire duration.

Meanwhile, I've heard news of a child falling from above.

A human child.

The King and Queen of Monsters have taken it in as their own, and even dress the child like Asriel, who is their biological son. It seems this peace between one human and the monsters surrounding them has brought a new hope to the underground. They are beginning to whisper about a tale symbolized by the 'Delta Rune' the royal family wears.

A prophecy that tells of an angel that will free the monsters of their underground prison.

Is this child one that was foretold? Or is it mere coincidence?

Will monsters use the Child's SOUL to collect more outside of the barrier? Or break the barrier in time to show no harm has come to the child, and that peace may prevail?

Only time will tell.

ENTRY 15

I have made a terrible mistake.

Gaster called me to his Laboratory, exclaiming that he has done the impossible.

I went in haste, the possibilities endless in my mind until he brought me to a room I had never been to and opened the door.

"It took some slight maneuvering and a lot of my own magical abilities, but I have created life, Doctor! Life from practically nothing!"

Standing before his open arms was a small skeletal figure in a blue jacket. He grinned widely and waved 'hello' before looking up at his creator.

I could barely ask if the thing was in fact my son.

When I could utter the words, Gaster hastily shook his head. "No! Of course, that was my conclusion as well, until I tested the very SOUL within this child. The structure of it is completely different! The anatomical differences are so significant, that I believe this is an entirely new being on its own! A being like myself, altered from human to monster and resulting in a hybrid-type form. Incredible! I can say without a doubt that this being is not your son, but rather an altercation of SOUL magic! Do you realize the incredible findings of this experiment? This scientific discovery proves that SOULs can be changed. Doctor, we can change the SOULs of monsters into SOULs with enough power to break the barrier! This is the way out!"

"So, then. Does this discovery have a name?"

"Ah? Oh! Of course, since he is a living being, I must treat him as such. Doctor, this is Sans Gaster."

"heya."

I greeted the skeletal boy, then asked the Doctor for privacy.

"This borders on the unethical, Doctor." I warned him.

"Oh, but haven't we done enough along that border? It brought you your family! It brought monsters underground! It brought us Sans! These experiments, this test of scientific discovery- it is all for the sake of modernization! Look at what we have found down here, away from the ignorance of man!"

"I am still man, and there are those who are not ignorant."

"Ah, come now, Doctor! You must understand how the fear of the unknown has plagued the human race for centuries, it has even done that of the monster race as well! Yet, here we stand in a lab of my own design, away from the hatred of scientific risks of what is 'ethical' and what is beyond humanitarian interests!"

It was then that I inquired about his hand, which had a rather large puncture wound in the center of his palm. He explained that in order to create Sans, physical matter was necessary to piece the SOUL together. This is what gave Sans the similar characteristics to the Doctor himself. Not only that, but it would seem that despite the lack of insulation of skin and flesh, they don't feel extreme temperatures with discomfort like a normal human would.

"This is what I have discovered: The SOUL had changed from the use of my own magic as well as the alteration of the entirety of the SOUL, giving it a source of life that is different from Daniel's. The fibers of this boy's physical matter share half of the likeliness of my own, but none- none- of yours or that of your son. He is an entirely new form!"

"If my son's SOUL can create life, then isn't there a chance that Daniel himself still lives on within his own SOUL?"

"There is a chance of this, yes."

"Then I would like to use what remains of his SOUL to attempt to revive his physical state."

Gaster was quiet before he refused me my child's SOUL. He refused me the right to bring him back to me. To my wife. To (y/n).

The true reasons were selfish, but I told myself it was for my family. I had to bring him back to prove to myself that I hadn't lost myself in my pursuit of knowledge. In my pursuit of making a name for myself for all of my work. I had created the link between humans and monsters! How dare he take it from me, likely to have his own name forever engraved in scientific history?

I did the unthinkable.

I returned three days later, and in my rage I took a random vial and loaded a syringe. The glowing red fluid was warm in my hand as I held it tight.

I asked Gaster once more for Daniel's SOUL. Again, he refused, saying that such a precious resource should be carefully studied after such trials for any damage. This was, after all, the very culmination of being.

I asked if we could discuss further trials instead, while walking through the lab to better broaden the mind. To this, he obliged.

As we ventured along the center of his lab, we reached the heart of the CORE. It buzzed wildly and loudly with such energy that I couldn't tell if it were maddening or inspiring.

"Gaster, will you at least let me see his SOUL?" I asked after a few minor discussions.

He paused before nodding. "Of course, dear friend. It is your son's essence of life, after all."

He turned and he looked a bit surprised, and I turned as well to see (y/n), standing and staring angrily at the both of us.

"Well, hello child." Gaster said calmly and with a smile. "What brings you here? This place is dangerous."

"I won't let you take Danny away!" She exclaimed. "I won't let you tear him apart!"

I had forgotten the little monster had almost free range of the laboratory, and supposedly had watched Gaster tinkering with Daniel's SOUL to create Sans.

Gaster tried to calm her down, but she held firm, stubborn like her mother.

"No! I'll never let you near him!"

She implied then that she hid the capsule containing Daniel, and Gaster's face changed abruptly. He calmly asked where he was, but she shook her head and turned up her nose. He began to shout at her how important it was that his SOUL stay in safe hands, and that these were 'not the affairs of a child'. She growled at him, protesting that Daniel himself was telling her to hide him away, that he didn't want to be turned into monsters.

Of course! They were twins, after all' one mind and one body forcibly split into two pieces of one whole. It would seem that, even in what seems to be death, Daniel was able to communicate to her somehow.

She had started to scream and cry, and while Gaster was distracted I plunged the needle into his spine and pushed the liquid in. I knew what it was the moment he gasped in pain and shock, and I immediately backed away as his body instantly began to change shape.

"Y-you..." Gaster limped as he slowly turned around to face me. "W-whyyy...?"

"Doctor!" I whipped around to see Sans, only to hear the strange language Gaster had used before from the two skeletons. Whatever the Doctor had said caused Sans to disappear from sight, and before I could turn to say anything to my former colleague, he had fallen (or perhaps he jumped) into the CORE itself. His body disappeared in the brilliant colors and light of the machine, and the world around us began to tremble.

I called little (y/n) to me and we ran as fast as we could, and before I left the final lab room I took what I could of the blueprints and data my old friend and I had collaborated together. We ran through Waterfall so quickly that I had lost my glasses in the process.

I barely used them after we came here anyway, but foggy as they were, the sentimentality of them being my Grandfather's caused my heart to slightly break.

We had reached the cave and I called my wife to quickly close it off, so we would not be seen or heard by any guards that would be seeking out the criminals of such a heinous murder.

After a few moments, I looked down at (y/n), who was trembling in her mother's arms. I asked her where Daniel was hiding. She waited a moment before slowly pointing to her room.

In this darkness, where we hide as the bustling of panicked guards and common monsters can be heard from the outside, I am thinking of new ways to restore Daniel.

Or rather, return to my original thesis.

With this new element - LOVE - there is a chance I could have had the success I wanted before the birth of Daniel and (y/n). The original formula never took into consideration the capacity of LOVE within the SOUL of the hybrid I had tried to bring into this world.

Perhaps...

Perhaps I could try again... With the resources I possess now, the only option is to try.

I'll have to wait until this world is sent into slumber.

What have I done?

Oh, what have I done?

Such failure. Am I only good for failure? Why did I do this to my family?

Am I truly so blind?

The experiment, not surprisingly, failed the moment I plunged the syringe into her heart.

Little (y/n)... What have I done to you?

My theory was that, if I combined the two of them, with the new LOVE as well as the SOUL itself, they would be able to live as one person, like Wingdin Gaster had done.

I bottled what I could of the LOVE after placing the SOUL in a syringe I had swiped from the Lab, and I called my daughter... I called my daughter to me in a false embrace so that I could inject the serum into her chest. She gasped and held herself while falling to the ground, and as her fur began to fall from her body I realized my mistake.

"Why?" It was a whisper that echoed like a sob through the cavern.

"What have you done?" Her mother cried.

Whether it was a coincidental phenomenon, or simply her magic and rage that caused the earthquake, I'll never know for sure.

But it raged on, and in a split decision I grabbed my wife and pulled the both of us into an adjacent tunnel before it caved in. I heard a noise and suddenly the fur in my hands faded away, leaving me clutching handfuls of soft white powder instead of the monster I loved.

I am alone now, and I can still hear the screams of agony coming from my daughter on the other side of these rocks.

I am going to die here.

But maybe all is not lost... Or if it isn't, I'd better start digging.

(y/n)

It's been long enough now. No food. No water. No hope.

And yet, I believe in my heart that you're alive on the other side of this cavern. I see you breathing, faintly, collapsed on the damp ground.

I write this letter knowing that I am going mad. I read these pages over and over and yet I cannot recall some of the names I had just seen on the paper. Written with my own hand.

Nevertheless, you deserve freedom more than I ever will.

When you read this letter, I want you to run to the barrier as fast as you can. Do not stop. Simply think of home. Put the front door in your mind and wish hard for it as you run to the surface. If you are alive... And I'm almost certain you are... Then you will cross the barrier unharmed.

Stay alive. Stay safe. Forgive me.

If I cannot be a fond memory, then think not of the past. Child of mine, please think only of your future. Pursue only what is best for you.

I love you, (y/n).

I'm sorry.
