Chapter 1: Breakaway

Chapter 1

(Chung Seo-Hyeon POV)

The Lexus IS 300 was sleek and fast. The deep purr of the engine encouraged me to step on the gas pedal even more and the thrill of speed was exhilarating. Acceleration was quick and as I glanced at the rearview mirror I could see the car that my father sent to tail me had disappeared in the winding highway on the outskirts of Seoul.

The IS 300 was the closest thing I could ever get to a sports car. It didn't have two doors or a dashing spoiler but it was fast. My father did not want his daughter driving around in a sports car attracting the wrong sort of suitors. Father was not known to compromise but my 18th birthday and his recent promotion at work made him reconsider despite his persistent specific instruction to get an Azera or anything else part of the family conglomerate business.

The small droplets have turned into sheets of water and the car's windscreen wipers were struggling to keep up. The car behind me had disappeared in the twist and bends of the road and everything was eerily dark except for the lonely street lights and the car's headlights.

I could feel the car's rear wheels slipping every time I turned a sharp corner, the excitement was terrifying but the feeling of making the turn was immensely satisfying. I was on the brink of losing control but the precise steering of the Lexus was no match for the wet slippery road.

Driving on the dark highway in a thunderstorm had taken my mind off the argument I had with my parents. In line with my father's recent promotion, they had decided without informing me to transfer to Jeguk High in my senior year. They already had finished the transfer and paper works without even consulting about my feelings once.

I was perfectly happy with my old High School, I had great friends and I really liked the teachers but my Father had insisted on transferring me. I couldn't argue back he was always stubborn and when he makes a decision it was final. He had convinced himself that transferring me to Jeguk High was good for business and that I would meet and be friends with the sons and daughters of influential people in Seoul as if that mattered to me.

I didn't know anyone in Jeguk High and I'm transferring in my Senior Year. The thought of making friends at that stage in high school made me nervous. Rumors always spread and despite the shining facade of the prestigious high school I have heard a few stories about how the students follow a strict caste system and bullied everyone below their group, the very thought made me quiver. I was always sociable but having classmates like that almost made me throw up.

I had lost track of my speed as I was wandering in deep thought and as I gazed at the tachymeter I was dangerously overspeeding. I was in a confused panic and hurriedly glanced on the road to find my bearing when I suddenly saw a face on the road shining from my headlight looking back at me. Without thinking I jerked my steering wheel to right and before I could make another move there was a sudden bang and my windshield cracked. I had hit something. I instinctively stepped on the brakes and the wet road fishtailed the car horribly sending me towards the guardrail on the cliff edge.

Even with full breaks the car was still dangerously moving fast and careening towards the guardrail and with a jarring bang, I had hit the guard rails with the side of my car, sending my right mirror flying away.
